Europium(II) and terbium(LV) drive boon observed in SrMgF4: Eu3+, Tb5+ phosphors which are synthesized in Ar stream. The valence state of europium is influenced by terbium. It is notable that the intensities of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) peaks corresponding to Eu2+ are increased when Tb3+ ion is incorporated in SrMgF4:Eu3+ phosphors, while X-ray photoelectron spectra of Tb-8d5/2 in SrMgF4:Eu3+,Tb3+ shows an additional peak at high energy to that of Tb-3d5/2 in SrMgF4: Tb3+, which is due to Tb4+. These phenomena can be explained by an electron transfer mechanism.

The difference between the Mossbauer parameters for EuBa2Cu3O7-x with dc electric current and those without dc electric current at 83 K has been observed. The change in isomer shift, electric quadrupole splitting and the asymmetry parameter of the electric field gradient at the Eu-151 nucleus may be caused by the movement of a mass of conduction electrons along a certain direction in the EuBa2Cu3O7-x crystal with a layered structure.

We use the hydrographic data obtained during the joint survey of the Yellow Sea by the First Institute of Oceanography, China and the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute, Korea, to quantify the spatial structures and temporal evolution of the southern Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM). It is indicated that the southern YSCWM is a water mass that develops in summer and decays in fall. In winter, due to the intrusion of the Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC), the central area (approximately between 34 degrees N and 35 degrees N, 122 degrees E and 124 degrees E) of the Yellow Sea is mainly occupied by relatively high temperature water (T > 10 degrees C). By contrast, from early summer to fall, under the seasonal thermocline, the central area of Yellow Sea is occupied by cold water (T < 10 degrees C). In summer, the southern YSCWM has two cold cores. One is formed locally southeast of Shandong Peninsula, and the other one has a tongue-like feature occupying the area approximately between 34 degrees N and 37 degrees N, 123 degrees E and 126 degrees E. The bottom layer temperature anomalies from February to July in the cold tongue region, along with the trajectories of the bottom floaters, suggest that the cold water mass in the northeast region has a displacement from the north to the central area of the Yellow Sea during the summer. The formation of surface alkoxy species on nanosized HZSM-5 and microsized HZSM-5, after exposure to methanol and subsequent conversion to olefins, has been investigated by in situ solid state NMR. Compared to microsized HZSM-5 zeolite, the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite was found to exhibit a higher affinity for trapping methanol species. Activation of the adsorbed methanol species resulted in the formation of various surface alkoxy species with different rigid characters, including the carboxylate-like surface species, as evidenced by deconvolution of the related spectra. The present results support the existence of the so-called carbon-pool in the conversion of methanol, which serves as the reaction precursor not only for the coupling of the species to form olefins, but also for uncontrolled polymerization to give coke on the surface. The nanosized HZSM-5 shows a distinct resistance to the formation of carbonaceous deposits on the surface.

Oxygen adsorption and desorption on a Pd(100) surface with a mesoscopic defect were studied by photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). The defect surface, with an area of approximately 200 x 60 mu m(2), behaved differently from the perfect Pd(100) surface towards the adsorption of oxygen. When saturated, both surface oxygen and subsurface oxygen coexisted on the defect surface, whereas only surface oxygen was present on the Pd(100) surface. Upon heating, subsurface oxygen diffused back to the surface and desorbed with surface oxygen at the same time. The difference in oxygen adsorption ability between the defect surface and the perfect Pd(100) surface can be attributed to different structures of these two surfaces. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
