A comprehensive study of the low-temperature oxidation of CO was conducted over Pd/TiO2, Pd/CeO2, and Pd/CeO2-TiO2 pretreated by a series of calcination and reduction processes. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, XRD, H-2 chemisorption, and diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The results indicated that Pd/CeO2-TiO2 has the highest activity among these catalysts, whether in the calcined state or in the reduced state. The activity of all of the catalysts can be improved significantly by the pre-reduction, and it seems that the reduction at low temperature (LTR. 150 degrees C) is more effective than that at high temperature (HTR, 500 degrees C), especially for Pd/CeO2 and Pd/TiO2. The catalysts with various supports and pretreatments are also different in the reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation at low temperature. Over Pd/TiO2, the reaction may proceed through a surface reaction between the weakly adsorbed CO and oxygen (Langmuir-Hinshelwood). For Ce-containing catalysts, however, an alteration of reaction mechanism with temperature and the involvement of the oxygen activation at different sites were observed, and the light-off profiles of the calcined Pd/CeO2 and Pd/CeOi-TiO2 show a distortion before CO conversion achieves 100%. At low temperature, CO oxidation proceeds mainly via the reaction between the adsorbed CO on Pd-0 sites and the lattice oxygen of surface CeO2 at the Pd-Ce interface, whereas at high temperature it proceeds via the reaction between the adsorbed CO and oxygen. The high activity of Pd/CeO2-TiO2 for the low-temperature CO oxidation was probably due to the enhancements of both CO activation, caused by the facilitated reduction of Pd2+ to Pd-0, and oxygen activation, through the improvement of the surface oxygen supply and the oxygen vacancies formation. The reduction pretreatment enhances metal-support interactions and oxygen vacancy formation and hence improves the activity of CO oxidation. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The chemisorption of CO on a Cr( 110) surface is investigated using the quantum Monte Carlo method in the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) variant and a model Cr2CO cluster. The present results are consistent with the earlier ab initio HF study with this model that showed the tilted/ near-parallel orientation as energetically favoured over the perpendicular arrangement. The DMC energy difference between the two orientations is larger (1.9 eV) than that computed in the previous study. The distribution and reorganization of electrons during CO adsorption on the model surface are analysed using the topological electron localization function method that yields electron populations, charge transfer and clear insight on the chemical bonding that occurs with CO adsorption and dissociation on the model surface.

The influence of HCl on CO and NO emissions was experimentally investigated in an entrained flow reactor (EFR) and an internally circulating fluidized bed (ICFB). The results in EFR show the addition of HCl inhibits CO oxidation and NO formation at 1073 K and 1123 K. At the lower temperature (1073 K) the inhibition of HCl becomes more obvious. In ICFB, chlorine-containing plastic (PVC) was added to increase the concentration of HCl during the combustion of coal or coke. Results show that HCl is likely to enhance the reduction of NO and N2O. HCl greatly increases CO and CH4 emission in the flue gas. A detailed mechanism of CO/NO/HCl/SO2 system was used to model the effect of HCl in combustion. The results indicate that HCl not only promotes the recombination of radicals O, H, and OH, but also accelerates the chemical equilibration of radicals. The influence of HCl on the radicals mainly occurs at 800-1200 K. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The combustion of high-temperature off-gas of steelmaking converter with periodical change of temperature and CO concentration always leads to CO and NOx over-standard emissions. In the paper, high-temperature off-gas combustion is simulated by adopting counterflow diffusion flame model, and some influencing factors of CO and NOx emissions are investigated by adopting a detailed chemistry GRI 3.0 mechanism. The emission index of NOx (EINOx) decreases 1.7–4.6% when air stoichiometric ratio (SR) increase from 0.6 to 1.4, and it dramatically increases with off-gas temperature at a given SR when the off-gas temperature is above 1500 K. High-concentration CO in off-gas can result in high NOx emissions, and NOx levels increase dramatically with CO concentration when off-gas temperature is above 1700 K. Both SR and off-gas temperature are important for the increase of CO burnout index (BICO) when SR is less than 1.0, but BICO increase about 1% when off-gas temperature increases from 1100 K to 1900 K at SR > 1.0. BICO increases with CO concentration in off-gas, and the influence of off-gas temperature on BICO is marginal. BICO increases with the relative humidity (RH) in air supplied, but it increases about 0.5% when RH is larger than 30%.

The real-space recursion method and unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation have been applied to calculate the density of states of various Co perovskite, CeCoO3, SrCoO3 and Sr1-xCexCoO3. We have studied the magnetically ordered states of these Co perovskites in an enlarged double cell, and find its various magnetic structures due to the occupancy of 3d band and its interaction with neighboring Co ions. In this study, we have studied the p-d hybridization of the three Co perovskites, we find t(2g) electrons are localized and the flat e(g) band is responsible for the itinerant behavior, and although the rare earth elements itself contribute little to the DOS at the Fermi energy, the DOS at Fermi energy and the magnetic moment changed consequently because of different valence of Co ions in these compounds and p-d hybridization effect is very important. We have studied the excitation and dissociation processes of the molecule W(CO)(6) in collisions with low kinetic energy (3 keV) protons, monocharged fluorine, and chlorine ions using double charge transfer spectroscopy. By analyzing the kinetic energy loss of the projectile anions, we measured the excitation energy distribution of the produced transient dications W(CO)(6)(2+). By coincidence measurements between the anions and the stable or fragments of W(CO)(6)(2+), we determined the energy distribution for each dissociation channel. Based on the experimental data, the emission of the first CO was tentatively attributed to a nonstatistical direct dissociation process and the emission of the second or more CO ligands was attributed to the statistical dissociation processes. The dissociation energies for the successive breaking of the W-CO bond were estimated using a cascade model. The ratio between charge separation and evaporation (by the loss of CO+ and CO, respectively) channels was estimated to be 6% in the case of Cl+ impact. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. The reduction of NO with CO in the presence of excess oxygen was investigated over different noble metal catalysts for probing the relationship between catalytic properties and adsorption behaviors. Among the four precious metal catalysts investigated, Ir/ZSM-5 was found to be the only active one for NO reduction with CO under lean conditions. With the decreasing of the Ir content, higher NO conversion and CO selectivity was obtained. Temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) studies of NO/H-2/O-2 and NO/CO/O-2 showed that the Pt/ZSM-5 was active when H-2 was used as the reductant, whereas, the Ir/ZSM-5 was active when CO was the reducing agent. This difference is due to the different mechanisms of the two reactions. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of NO, CO and O-2 showed that NO could dissociate more easily over the Ir/ZSM-5 than on the Pt/ZSM-5, while the oxidation of CO by O-2 proceeded more rapidly on the Pt/ZSM-5 than on the Ir/ZSM-5. The presence of excess O-2 inhibited drastically the dissociation of NO, which is considered as the key step for the NO-CO reaction. The high dissociation rate of NO over the Ir/ZSM-5 is visualized as the key factor for its superior high activity in NO reduction with CO under lean conditions. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The effect of iron promoter on the catalytic properties of Rh-Mn-Li/SiO2 catalyst in the synthesis Of C-2 oxygenates from syngas was investigated by means of the following techniques: CO hydrogenation reaction, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), temperature-programmed desorption and reaction of adsorbed CO (CO-TPD and TPSR) and pulse adsorption of CO. The results showed that the addition of iron promoter could improve the activity of the catalysts. Unexpectedly, the yield of C-2 oxygenates increased greatly from 331.6 up to 457.5 g/(kg h) when 0.05% Fe was added into Rh-Mn-Li/SiO2 catalyst, while no change in the selectivity to C-2 oxygenates was observed. However, the activity and selectivity Of C-2 oxygenates were greatly decreased if the Fe amount exceeded 1.0%. The existence of a little iron decreased the reducibility of Rh precursor, while the reduction of Fe component itself became easier. CO uptake decreased with increasing the quantity of Fe addition. This phenomenon was further confirmed by CO-TPD results. The CO-TPD and TPSR results showed that only the strongly adsorbed CO could be hydrogenated, while the weakly adsorbed CO was desorbed. We propose that Fe is highly dispersed and in close contact with Rh and Mn; such arrangements were responsible for the high yield Of C-2 oxygenates. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Rare earth oxide, neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), CO-catalyzed melt grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) onto co-polypropylene (co-PP) in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was carried out by reactive extrusion. The experimental results reveal that the addition of Nd2O3 as a coagent leads to an enhancement in both MFR and the grafting degree of MAH, along with a simultaneous decrease in the gel content. When the Nd2O3 concentration is 6.0 mmol%, the increment of the grafting degree of MAH maximally is up to about 20% compared with the related system without adding Nd2O3, and the gel content decreases simultaneously to a very low level of about 3%. Attenuated total reflection FTIR (ATR-FTIR) indicates that the gel in the graft copolymers mainly arise from the cross-linking reaction between ethylene units of co-PP. A reasonable reaction mechanism has been put forward on the basis of our experimental results and other mechanisms reported in the literature. We also tentatively explain above results by means of synergistic effect between DCP and Nd2O3, which causes a higher concentration of the macroradical, in particular the tertiary macroradical.
