A near-infrared luminescent macroporous material (PL-Macromaterial) and a near-infrared luminescent/magnetic bifunctional macroporous material (MML-Macromaterial) were synthesized by using polystyrene microspheres (PS) and Fe3O4 @polystyrene core-shell nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PS), respectively, as templates. Both the PL-Macromaterial and the M/PL-Macromaterial show the characteristic emission of the Er 3, ion. Moreover, the M/PL-Macromaterial possesses superparamagnetic properties at room temperature.

Erbium-doped BaF2 nanoparticles were prepared from the microemulsion of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), n-butanol, n-octane and water. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were indexed to a pure BaF2 cubic phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that BaF2 products were monodispersed with 15-20 nm in size at the dopant concentration of 0.06 mol%. At higher dopant concentration, there was no significant increase in particle size, but more polydispersed. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of the final products were examined. We can observe fluorescence of Er3+ around 1540 nm and with the increase of dopant concentration, the fluorescent intensity increases.

The covalency of each bond in divalent europium doped hosts CaSiO3, SrSiO3, BaSiO3, Sr2LiSiO4F, Ba5SiO4Cl6 and Ba5SiO4Br6 were calculated by using the complicate crystal chemical bond theory. The relationship between the Stokes shift and the bond properties of Eu2+ in these crystals was discussed. The result demonstrates that, in the isostructural crystals that being doped with Eu2+, there is a more precise connection between the magnitude of Stokes shift and the mean covalency of the dopant site.

The formation of ( t-BuCp)(2)ErOEt was discussed. Its single-crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystal is monoclinic, P2(1)/c space group, a = 1.0191(2), b = 1.6203(5), c = 1.2118(3) nm, beta = 102. 960( 10)degrees, V = 1.9500 (nm(3)), Z = 2, D-c = 1.566 mg . m(-3), R = 0.0450, R-w = 0.1363. The complex is monomeric and solvent-free in the solid state. The erbium ion is coordinated by two tert-butyl-cyclopentadienyl rings and one oxygen atom of ethoxy group to form a seven-coordinated complex.

Rare-earth (Eu3+, Tb3+)-doped Ca2Y8(SiO4)(6)O-2 luminescent thin films were dip-coated on silicon and quartz glass substrates through a sol-gel route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and luminescence excitation and emission spectra as well as luminescence decays were used to characterize the resultant films. The results of XRD reveal that these films remain amorphous below 700 degreesC, begin to crystallize at 800 degreesC, and crystallize completely around 1000 degreesC with an oxyapatite structure. The grain structure of the film can be seen clearly from SEM micrographs, where particles with various shape and average size of 250 nm can be resolved. The Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions show their characteristic red (D-5(0)-F-7(2)) and green (D-5(4)-F-7(5)) emission in the films with a quenching concentration of 10 and 6 mol% (of Y3+), respectively. The lifetime of Eu-3divided by increases with the heat treatment temperature front 700 to 1100 degreesC.

Infrared emission at 1.54 mu m excited optically and electrically from an erbium organic compound tris(acetylacetonato)(1,10-phenanthroline) erbium [Er(acac)(3)(phen)] is observed. The rare-earth complex is dispersed into a polymer matrix of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) to fabricate an electroluminescent (EL) device with an ITO/PVK:Er(acac)(3)(phen)/Al:Li/Ag structure, where ITO represents indium-tin-oxide-coated glass. The device shows infrared EL emission at 1.54 mu m, which suggests a simple and cheap method to obtain a light source for 1.54-mu m-wavelength devices in optical communications. Eu3+-activated calcium silicate (CaO-SiO2:Eu3+) luminescent films were prepared by the sol-gel method. The structural evolution of the film was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the luminescence properties of the phosphor films were investigated as a function of heat treatment temperature. The XRD study indicates that a kilchoanite phase forms in the film sintered at 800 degreesC, which is different from that in gel powder treated under the same conditions. The SEM results show that the film thickness decreases and the particles in the film become smaller with increasing heat treatment temperature. The CaO-SiO2:Eu film shows the characteristic emission of Eu3+ under UV excitation, with the Eu3+ D-5(0)-->F-7(2) band (616 nm) being the most prominent. A large difference in the Eu3+ lifetime is observed between the film samples treated at 500 and 700 degreesC (or above). Concentration quenching occurs when the Eu3+ doping concentration is above 6 mol% of Ca2+ in the film.

Multilayers of Y-type bilayers of pure and mixed erbium palmitate(EP), nonadecanate(Er) and behenate(EB) on CaF2 substrates were prepared by conventional Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. II is demonstrated that two systems composed of alternating bilayer of different fatty acid salts are unidimensional superlattices. These LB films were characterized by means of x-ray photoelectronic Spectrometry (XPS), FTIR and x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements.

A new Er(III)-Na(I) coordination polymer of stoichiometry [NaEr2L5(H2O)(6)(NO3)](NO3). 3.5H(2)O (HL = picolinic acid N-oxide) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are triclinic, P (1) over bar with a = 9.823(2), b = 12.453(2), c = 20.643(4) Angstrom; alpha = 98.49(3), beta = 101.40(3), gamma = 108.69(3)degrees; V = 2284(1) Angstrom(3); Z = 2. Of the two independent eight-coordinate erbium(III) ions in this complex, one is surrounded by four bidentate chelating L ligands, and the other by one bidentate chelating L ligand, four aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two neighboring [ErL4] units. The sodium(I) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, being coordinated by a unidentate nitrate anion, three aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two adjacent [ErL4] units. The complex is built from zigzag chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged erbium(III) moieties directed in the a direction, which are cross-linked pairwise by aqua-bridged dimeric sodium(I) units. The resulting composite polymeric chains are further connected by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional network.

Hybrid materials incorporating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) via a sol-gel process were studied for a wide range of compositions of PEG by DSC and high resolution solid-state C-13- and Si-29-NMR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the microstructure of the hybrid materials and the crystallization behavior of PEG in hybrids strongly depend on the relative content of PEG. With an increasing content of PEG, the microstructure of hybrid materials changes a lot, from intimate mixing to macrophase separation. It is found that the glass transition temperatures (T-g) (around 373 K) of PEG homogeneously embedded in a silica network are much higher than that (about 223 K) of pure PEG and also much higher in melting temperatures T-m (around 323 K) than PEG crystallites in heterogeneous hybrids. Meanwhile, the lower the PEG content, the more perfect the silica network, and the higher the T-g of PEG embedded in hybrids. An extended-chain structure of PEG was supposed to be responsible for the unusually high T-g of PEG. Homogeneous PEG-TEOS hybrids on a molecular level can be obtained provided that the PEG. content in the hybrids is less than 30% by weight. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The Pb2+ luminescence in a series of silicate oxyapatites Me(2)(Y, Gd)(8)(SiO4)(6)O-2, Me(4)Y(6)(SiO4)(6)O (Me = Mg: Ca, Sr) is reported and discussed in relation to the crystal structure. The maximum wavelengths of the excitation (S-1(0)-P-3(1)) and emission (P-3(1)-S-1(0)) bands of Pb2+ are independent of the Mc:Y ratio (2:8 or 4:6) but they have lower energies in MgY-oxyapatites than in CaY- and SrY-oxyapatites. The Stokes shift of Pb2+ luminescence amounts to 11 100 to 11 400 cm(-1): which does not depend strongly on the host composition. There exists a mutual energy transfer between Pb2+ and Gd3+ in Sr2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2. At last, the dependence of the energy transfer efficiency of Pb2+-Sm3+, Tb3+: Dy3+ in Sr-2(La: Gd)(8)(SiO4)(6)O-2 and Ca-2(Y, Gd)(8)(SiO4)(6)O-2 on their doping concentrations was studied in more detail.

In the structure of catena-poly[{triaqua(L-pro-line-O)erbium(III)}-bis-mu-(L-proline-O:O')-{triaqua-(L-proline-O)erbium(III)}-bis-mu-(L-proline-O:O') hexaperchlorate], each Er3+ ion is coordinated by five carboxyl O atoms from the L-proline molecules and three water molecules. Four of the SiX L-proline molecules act as bidentate bridging ligands to link the Er3+ ions through the carboxyl groups, thus producing a one-dimensional chain structure. The other two ligands coordinate unidentately to the rare-earth ions. Hydrogen bonds formed between the coordinated water molecules and between the water and unidentate proline ligand stabilize the polymeric chain.

Various Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) ceramic coatings were prepared on LY12 aluminum alloy by adjusting the concentration of sodium silicate solution. Optical microscope (OM), XRD and EIS were used to study their morphology, composition and anti corrosion behavior in NaCl solution. Increasing concentration of sodium silicate leads to the increase of the total coating thickness while too high and too low concentration lead to the decrease of inner dense layer. The main composition of PEO coatings prepared in 20, 40 and above 60g/L concentration solution are correspondingly alumina, alumina with mullite, and amorphous phase. The corrosion resistance is determined by the inner dense layer. Increasing the thickness of inner dense layer can improve the anti-corrosion performance. PEO coating's corrosion resistance in acidic, alkaline and neutral NaCl solution is proved and the corrosion mechanism involved is also discussed.
