In this study, we established a correlation between cavitations volume and the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) for particle toughened thermoplastics. The brittle-ductile transition temperature (T-BD) was calculated as a function of T* and interparticle distance (ED), respectively, where T* was a parameter related to the volume of cavitations. The results showed that the smaller the cavitations volume, the higher the brittle-ductile transition temperature. The calculations correlated well with the experimental data. With respect to rubber particle, the rigid particle was too hard to be voided during deformation, thereby the TED of the blend was much higher than that of rubber particle toughened thermoplastic. This was a main reason that rubber particle could toughen thermoplastics effectively, whereas rigid particle could not.

Initiation and termination of crazes in high impact polystyrene (HIPS) were studied by transmission electron microscope. Instead of the first initiation of crazes in the vicinity of the equator or rubber particles, ribbon-shaped crazes beyond the region were observed on the TEM photos. The starting point and the end point of each ribbon were noticed not to be randomly located on the surface of the cellar particles in HIPS. The spots connecting to the ligaments between the PS rigid inclusions in the cellar particle are found to be the locations where crazes were initiated and terminated preferentially. In addition, the crazes generated at those spots were much thicker and longer. The thoughness of high impact polystyrene was enhanced by the multiple crazes formed in the matrices, through the reduction of the craze stress at room temperature with increasing the volume fraction of polybutadiene at these spots in the dispersed phase. These results conducted that not only the cell structure of the domains in HIPS was not homogeneous but also the polybutadiene ligaments between PS rigid inclusions in the domains were inhomogeneous. Therefore, the responsibility of those polybutadiene ligaments with different thickness to the stresses was different and it forced the crazing initiation and growing preferentially. The crazes were created in some regions in the matrices; On the contrary, rare crazes were formed in the other regions in spite of these regions surrounded around the same dispersed particles. The relation between the spots on the surface and the inner structure of the cellar particle was discussed in this paper.

Polyamide (PA)1010 is blended with a saturated polyolefin elastomer, ethylene-cu-olefin copolymer (EOCP). To improve the compatibility of PA1010 with EOCP, different grafting rates of EOCP with maleic anhydride (MA) are used. The reaction between PA1010 and EOCP-g-MA during extrusion is verified through an extraction test. Mechanical properties, such as notched Izod impact strength, elongation at break, etc., are examined as a function of grafting rate and weight fraction of elastomer. It was found that in the scale of grafting rate (0.13-0.92 wt %), 0.51 wt % is an extreme point for several mechanical properties. Elastomer domains of PA1010/ EOCP-g-MA blends show a finer and more uniform dispersion in the matrix than that of PA1010/EOCP blends. For the same grafting rate, the average sizes of elastomer particles are almost independent on the contents of elastomer, but for different grafting rates, the particle sizes are decreased with increasing grafting rate. The copolymer formed during extrusion strengthens the interfacial adhesion and acts as an emulsifier to prevent the aggregation of elastomer in the process of blending. The toughness of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) blends containing various EPDM contents as a function of the tensile speed was studied. The toughness of the blends was determined from the tensile fracture energy of the side-edge notched samples. A sharp brittle-tough transition was observed in the fracture energy versus interparticle distance (ID) curves when the crosshead speed < 102.4 mm/min. It was observed that the brittle-ductile transition of PP/EPDM blend occurred either by reducing ID or by decreasing the tensile speed. The correlation between the critical interparticle distance and tensile deformation rate was compared with that between the critical interparticle distance and temperature for PP/EPDM blends. The toughness of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/glass-bead blends containing various glass-bead contents as a function of temperature was studied. The toughness of the blends was determined from the notch Izod impact test. A sharp brittle-ductile transition was observed in impact strength-interparticle distance (ID) curves at various temperatures. The brittle-ductile transition of HDPE/glass-bead blends occurred either with reduced ID or with increased temperature. The results indicated that the brittle-ductile-transition temperature dropped markedly with increasing glass-bead content. Moreover, the correlation between the critical interparticle distance (ID.) and temperature was obtained. Similar to the ID, of polymer blends with elastomers, the ID, nonlinearly increased with increasing temperature. However, this was the first observation of the variation of the ID, with temperature for polymer blends with rigid particles. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym. Sci Part B: Polym. The paper studies the morphology and mechanical properties of immiscible binary blends of the nylon 1010 and HIPS through the radiation crosslinking method. In this blend, the HIPS particles were the dispersed phases in the nylon 1010 matrix. With increasing of dose, the elastic modulus increased, However, the tensile strength. elongation at bleak and the energy of fracture increased to a maximum at a dose of 0.34 MGy, then reduced with the increasing of dose. SEM photographs show that the hole sizes are not changed obviously at low dose and at high dose, remnants that cannot be dissolved in formic acid and THF can be observed in the holes and on the surface. TEM photographs showed that radiation destroys the rubber phases in the polymer blend. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The chain structure, spherulite morphology, and theological property of LL-DPE-g-AA were studied by using electronspray mass spectroscopy, C-13-NMR, and rheometer. Experimental evidence proved that AA monomers grafted onto the LLDPE backbone formed multiunit AA branch chains. It was found that AA branch chains could hinder movement of the LLDPE main chain during crystallization. Spherulites of LLDPE became more anomalous because of the presence of AA branch chains. Rheological behavior showed that AA branch chains could act as an inner plasticizer at the temperature range of 170-200 degreesC, which made LLDPE-g-AA easy to further process. The effect of the elastomer stiffness on brittle-tough transition in elastomer toughening thermoplastics was quantitatively studied. A correlation between brittle-tough transition temperature and the elastomer stiffness was obtained. The calculation from this correlation showed that the brittle-tough transition temperature (T-bt) Of elastomer toughening thermoplastics slowly increased up to one tenth of the modulus of matrix, thereafter it increased rapidly with increasing the modulus of elastomer. The results indicated that the modulus of the elastomer must be one-tenth or less of that of the matrix in order to be effective at low temperature. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The effect of accelerated weather aging an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer(EPDM) rubber used for outdoor insulation was studied by surface roughness measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(xps). The surface roughness of EPDM rubber changed with aging time. The surface oxygen and aluminum content were found to increase and that of carbon, silicon and nitrogen to decrease with time. The detailed XPS analysis indicated that the concentration of carbon in C-C decreased and that of highly oxidized carbons in C-O, C=O and O=C-O increased with time, which was due to the oxidation of EPDM rubber polymer. The appearance of O=C-O on the surface of EPDM rubber was a signal that EPDM rubber became aged. The aging speed decreased with time. The aging mechanism is discussed also.

From the angle of energy transformation an equation was obtained for the brittle transition in polymer blends. The effects of interparticle distance, temperature and strain rate on the brittle-tough transition in polymer blends were characterized by this equation. The calculations show that, for this transition: (1) increasing temperature and decreasing interparticle distance are equivalent and the shift factor increases with increasing temperature; (2) decreasing strain rate and decreasing interparticle distance have equivalent effects on the transition; (3) the strain rate must be optimum in order to find the brittle-tough transition phenomena for a given temperature region. Morphology, mechanical properties, and interfacial interaction of polyamide 1010/polypropylene (PA1010/ PP) blends compatibilized with polypropylene grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA) were studied. It was found that the size of the PP domains, tensile and impact strength of ternary blends, and adhesion fracture energy between two layers of PA1010 and PP were all significantly dependent on the PP-g-GMA contents in the PP layer. Correlations between morphology and related properties were sought. The improvements in properties have been attributed to chemical and physical interaction occurring between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA. Irradiation can be applied to crosslink the dispersed elastomer phase to increase the modulus and decrease the voiding ability of the elastomer, which results in increasing critical brittle-tough transition elastomer content at constant temperature. The experimental results show that at 25 degrees C the critical elastomer content of EPDM shifts to higher composition (shift of about 4 wt%) for PBT/EPDM blends after 100 kGy gamma-irradiation. Two etching techniques are used to reveal the morphology of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA blend. One is based on acetic acid (CH3COOH) solutions, whereas the other uses CCl4/ C2H5OH (3/1 v/v). The latter approach shows to be more appropriate and successful for revealing the morphology of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA blend.

Polycarbonate (PC) and a core-shell latex polymer composed of poly(butyl acrylate) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PBA-cs-PMMA) as core and shell, respectively, were mixed using a Brabender-like apparatus under different conditions. The mechanical properties, the morphology and the processability of the blends were investigated. Because of the good compatibility of PC and PMMA, even dispersion of PBA-cs-PMMA in PC matrix and good adhesion between the components have been achieved. PBA-cs-PMMA is thus a very good impact modifier for PC. The toughening mechanism is both cavitation and shear yielding, as indicated by SEM observation. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The thermal properties and crystalline structure of the amphiphilic graft copolymers CR-g-PEG600, CR-g-PEG2000, and CR-g-PEG6000 using chloroprene rubber (CR) as the hydrophobic backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights as the hydrophilic side chains were studied by DSC and WAXD. The results showed that a distinct phase-separated structure existed in CR-g-PEGs because of the incompatibility between the backbone segments and the side-chain segments. For all the polymers studied, T-m2, which is the melting point of PEG crystalline domains in CR-g-PEG, decreased compared to that of the corresponding pure PEG and varied little with PEG content. For CR-g-PEG600 and CR-g-PEG2000, T-m1, which is the melting point of the CR crystalline domains, increased with increasing PEG content when the PEG content was not high enough, and at constant PEG content, the longer were the PEG side chains the higher was the T-m1. The crystallite size L-011 of CR in CR-g-PEGs increased compared to that of the pure CR and decreased with increasing PEG content. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
