The catalytic performances of ZrO2-based catalysts were evaluated for the synthesis of higher alcohols from synthesis gas. The crystal phase structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV Raman. The results indicated that ZrO2 and Pd modified ZrO2 catalysts were effective catalysts in the synthesis of ethanol or isobutanol, and their selectivities basically depended on the crystal phase of ZrO2 surface. The ZrO2 with surface tetragonal crystal phase exhibited a high activity to form ethanol, while the ZrO2 with surface monoclinic crystal phase exhibited a high activity to form isobutanol. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiment indicated that the high activity of isobutanol formation from synthesis gas over monoclinic zirconia was due probably to the strong Lewis acidity of Zr4+ cations and the strong Lewis basicity of O2- anions of coordinative unsaturated Zr4+-O2- pairs on the surface of monoclinic ZrO2. The reduction of NO by CH4 in the presence of excess O-2 over Co/HZSM-5, Ni/HZSM-5 and Mn/HZSM-5 catalysts with microwave heating was studied. By comparing the activities of the catalysts in the microwave heating mode with that in the conventional reaction mode, it was demonstrated that microwave heating could greatly reduce the reaction temperature, and could clearly expand the temperature window of the catalysts. Especially for the Co/HZSM-5 catalyst, the maximum conversion of NO to N-2 in the conventional reaction mode was consistent with that in the microwave heating mode. However, the temperature window for the maximum conversion in the microwave heating mode was from 260 to 360degreesC instead of a temperature of 420degreesC in the conventional reaction mode. The results suggest that microwave heating has a novel effect in the reduction of NO.

A series of chromium/Schiff base complexes N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamino chromium(III) X were prepared and employed for the alternating copolymerization of carbon dioxide with racemic propylene oxide in the presence of (4-dimethylamino)pyridine. The effect of the complex structure and reaction conditions on the catalytic activity, the poly(propylene carbonate)/cyclic carbonate (PPC/PC) selectivity, and the polymer head-to-tail linkages was examined. The experiments indicated that N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamino chromium(III) (NO3) exhibited the highest PPC/PC selectivity as well as polymer head-to-tail linkages and N,N'-bis(3,5-dichlorosalicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediimino chromiu(III) (NO3) possessed the highest catalytic activity among these chromium/Schiff base complexes. The structure of the produced copolymer was characterized by the IR, H-1 NMR, and C-13 NMR measurements.

The oxovanadium phosphonates (VO(P-204)(2) and VO(P-507)(2)) activated by various alkylaluminums (AlR3, R = Et, i-Bu, n-Oct; HAIR(2), R = Et, i-Bu) were examined in butadiene (Bd) polymerization. Both VO(P-204)(2) and VO(P-507)(2) showed higher activity than those of classical vanadium-based catalysts (e.g. VOCl3, V(acac)(3)). Among the examined catalysts, the VO(P-204)(2)/Al(Oct)(3) system (I) revealed the highest catalytic activity, giving the poly(Bd) bearing M-n of 3.76 x 10(4) g/mol, and M-w/M-n ratio of 2.9, when the [Al]/[V] molar ratio was 4.0 at 40 degrees C. The polymerization rate for I is of the first order with respect to the concentration of monomer. High thermal stability of I was found, since a fairly good catalytic activity was achieved even at 70 degrees C (polymer yield > 33%); the M-n value and M-w/M-n, ratio were independent of polymerization temperature in the range of 40-70 degrees C. By IR and DSC, the poly(Bd)s obtained had high 1,2-unit content (> 65%) with atactic configuration. The 1,2-unit content of the polymers obtained by I was nearly unchanged, regardless of variation of reaction conditions, i.e. [Al]/[V], ageing time, and reaction temperature, indicating the high stability of stereospecificity of the active sites.

A series of neutral palladium(II) complexes bearing non-symmetric bidentate pyrrole-iminato or salicylaldiminato chelate ligands have been synthesized, and the structure of representative complexes (3a, 4a, and 5a) have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These palladium complexes have been investigated as catalysts for the polymerization of norbornene. Using modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display high activities and produce vinyl-addition polynorborenes. Catalytic activity of up to 8.52 x 10(3) kg/mol(Pd) h has been observed. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) has been used to investigate the polymer microstructure and it has been found that they are non-crystalline.

A series of binuclear neutral nickel and palladium complexes [(XC6H2CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))MRL](2) 4b-f (X=NO2, M=Ni, R=Ph, L=PPh3, 4b; X=H, M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3,4c; X=H,M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 4d; X=NO2,M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3, 4e; X=NO2, M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 4f) and [(C10H7CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))MRL](2) 8a-c (M=Ni, R=Ph, L=PPh3, 8a; M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3, 8b; M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 8c) have been synthesized and characterized. The structures of complexes 4e and 8b have also been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. With modified methylalummoxane (MMAO) as cocatalysts, these complexes and complex [(C6H3CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))NiPh(PPh3)](2) 4a are capable of catalyzing the addition polymerization of norbomene (NBE) with the high activity up to 2.3 x 10(8) g PNBE/(mol(M) h). The structure of complexes affects considerably catalytic activity towards norbomene polymerization. The polymers obtained with nickel complexes are soluble, while those obtained with palladium complexes are insoluble. Palladium complexes 4c, 4e and 8b bearing PPh3 ligands exhibit much higher activities than the corresponding complexes 4d, M and 8c bearing pyridine ligands under the same conditions.

Biphenyl- (Biph-) containing 1-alkynes (3 and 4) and their polymers (1 and 2) with varying bridge groups and spacer lengths were synthesized and the effects of the structural variation on their properties, especially their mesomorphism and photoluminescence behaviors, were studied. The acetylene monomers 3(3) [HCdropC(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(10)CH3] and 4(m) [HCdropC(CH2)(m)OCO-Biph-OCO(CH2)(10)-CH3, m = 3, 4] were prepared by sequential etherization and esterification reactions of 1-alkynes. While 3(3) exhibits enantiotropic crystal E and SmB mesophases, its structural cousin 4(3) displays only a monotropic SmB phase. Enantiotropic SmA and SmB mesophases are, however, developed when the spacer length is increased to 4. Polymerizations of the monomers are effected by Mo-, W-, Rh-, and Fe-based catalysts, with the WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst giving the best results (isolation yield up to 85% and M-w up to 59000). The polymers were characterized by IR, UV, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, XRD, and PL analyses. Compared to 1(3), 2(3) shows a red-shifted absorption, a higher T-i, and a better packed interdigitated bilayer SmA(d) structure, while the mesophase of 2(4) involves monolayer-packing arrangements of the mesogens. Upon photoexcitation, 1(3) emits almost no light but 2(m) gives a strong ultraviolet emission (lambda(max) similar to 350 nm), whose intensity increases with the spacer length.
