This article proposes a new wake oscillator model for vortex induced vibrations of an elastically supported rigid circular cylinder in a uniform current. The near wake dynamics related with the fluctuating nature of vortex shedding is modeled based on the classical van der Pol equation, combined with the equation for the oscillatory motion of the body. An appropriate approach is developed to estimate the empirical parameters in the wake oscillator model. The present predicted results are compared to the experimental data and previous wake oscillator Model results. Good agreement with experimental results is found.

Recent experimental advances have made it possible to study excited structure in superheavy nuclei. The observed states have often been interpreted as quasiparticle excitations. We show that in superheavy nuclei collective vibrations systematically appear as low-energy excitation modes. By using the microscopic Triaxial Projected Shell Model, we make a detailed prediction on gamma-vibrational states and their E2 transition probabilities to the ground state band in fermium and nobelium isotopes where active structure research is going on, and in (270)Ds, the heaviest isotope where decay data have been obtained for the ground-state and for an isomeric state.

The high spin levels of a very neutron-rich Zr-104 nucleus have been reinvestigated by measuring the prompt. rays in the spontaneous fission of Cf-252. The ground-state band has been confirmed. A new sideband has been identified with a band-head energy at 1928.7 keV. The projected shell model is employed to investigate the band structure of Zr-104. The results of calculated levels are in good agreement with the experimental data, and suggest that the new band in Zr-104 may be based on the neutron nu 5/2(-)[532] circle times nu 3/2(+)[411] configuration.

Inspired by the recent experimental data [J.-G. Wang, et al., Phys. Lett. B 675 (2009) 420], we extend the triaxial projected shell model approach to study the gamma-band structure in odd-mass nuclei. As a first application of the new development, the gamma-vibrational structure of Nb-103 is investigated. It is demonstrated that the model describes the ground-state band and multi-phonon gamma-vibrations quite satisfactorily, supporting the interpretation of the data as one of the few experimentally-known examples of simultaneous occurrence of one- and two-gamma-phonon vibrational bands. This generalizes the well-known concept of the surface gamma-oscillation in deformed nuclei built on the ground-state in even-even systems to gamma-bands based on quasiparticle configurations in odd-mass systems. Using microporous zeolites as host, sub-nanometric ZnO clusters were prepared in the micropores of the host by the incipient wetness impregnation method. A small amount of sub-nanometric ZnO clusters were introduced into the channels of HZSM-5 zeolite, whereas a large quantity of sub-nanometric ZnO clusters can be accommodated in the supercages of HY zeolite and no macrocrystalline ZnO exists on the extra surface of the HY material. The vibrations of the zeolite framework and ZnO were characterized by UV Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of these ZnO clusters were studied by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and laser-induced luminescence spectroscopy. It is found that there are strong host-guest interactions between the framework oxygen atoms of zeolite and ZnO clusters influencing the motions of the framework oxygen atoms. The interaction may be the reason why ZnO clusters are stabilized in the pores of zeolites. Different from bulk ZnO materials, these sub-nanometric ZnO clusters exhibit their absorption onset below 265 nm and show a purple luminescence band (centered at 410-445 nm) that possesses high quantum efficiency and quantum size effect. This purple luminescence band most likely originates from the coordinatively unsaturated Zn sites in sub-nanometric ZnO clusters. On the other hand, the differences in the pore structure between HZSM-5 and HY zeolites cause the absorption edge and the purple luminescence band of ZnO clusters in ZnO/HZSM-5 show a red shift in comparison with those of ZnO clusters in ZnO/HY.

Adsorption of 4,4'-thiobisbenzenethiol (4,4'-TBBT) on a colloidal silver surface and a roughened silver electrode surface was investigated by means of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for the first time, which indicates that 4,4'-TBBT is chemisorbed on the colloidal silver surface as dithiolates by losing two H-atoms of the S-H bond, while as monothiolates on the roughened silver electrode. The different orientations of the molecules on both silver surfaces indicate the different adsorption behaviors of 4,4'-TBBT in the two systems.

BACKGROUND: Blocked isocyanate-functionalized polyolefins have great potential for use in semicrystalline polymer blends to obtain toughened polymers. In this study, poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) was blended with allyl N-[2-methyl-4-(2-oxohexahydroazepine-1 -carboxamido)phenyl] carbamate-functionalized poly(ethylene octene) (POE-g-AMPC).RESULTS: New peaks at 2272 and 1720 cm(-1), corresponding to the stretching vibrations of NCO and the carbonyl of NH-CO-N, respectively, in AMPC, appeared in the infrared spectrum of POE-g-AMPC. Both rheological and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated a new copolymer was formed in the reactive blends. Compared to uncompatibilized PBT/POE blends, smaller dispersed particle sizes with narrower distribution were found in the compatibilized PBT/POE-g-AMPC blends. There was a marked increase in impact strength by about 10-fold over that of PBT/POE blends with the same rubber content and almost 30-fold higher than that of pure PBT when the POE-g-AMPC content was 25 wt%.

The diffusion of water in a phase-separated biodegradable poly(ester urethane) shape-memory polymer with poly(E-caprolactone) (PCL) as the soft segment was investigated using time-resolved FTIR-ATR. On the basis of the band fitting and water ordering in drawn films, the broad water band in the 3800-2800 cm(-1) region was decomposed into four bands located at 3620, 3510, 3400, and 3260 cm(-1), and the first two components at 3620 and 35 10 cm(-1) were assigned to the vibrations of antisymmetric and symmetric stretching of water hydrogen bonded with the C=O group of the soft segment. The other two were associated with water bonded to the urethane hard segments in the forms of N-H:O-H:O=C bridge hydrogen bond and double hydrogen bonds with two C=O groups, respectively. Furthermore, band fitting and two-dimensional correlation analyses revealed that in the diffusion process, water first diffuses into the continuous soft-rich PCL phase and then into the hard-rich urethane domains, forming double hydrogen bonds with two C=O groups prior to the bridge hydrogen bond in the form of N-H:O-H:O=C.

The hydrogen bonding and crystallization of a biodegradable poly(ester urethane) copolymer based on poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) as the soft segment were investigated by FTIR. On slow cooling from melt, the onset and the progress of the crystallization of the urethane hard segments were correlated to the position, width, and relative intensity of the hydrogen-bonded N-H stretching band. The interconversion between the "free" and hydrogen-bonded N-H and C=O groups in the urethane units in the process was also revealed by 2D correlation analysis of the FTIR data. The crystallization of the PLLA soft segments was monitored by the ester C=O stretching and the skeletal vibrations. It was revealed that the PLLA crystallization was restricted by the phase separation and the urethane crystallization, and at cooling rates of 10 degrees C/min or higher, the crystallization of the PLLA soft segments was prohibited.

Geometries, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials and dissociation energies of the title clusters in both neutral and positively and negatively charged states were studied by use of density functional theory. For both neutral and charged species, different initial isomers were studied in order to determine the structure with the lowest energy. Vibrational analysis was also performed in order to characterize these isomers. For Ta-2, Ta-Ta metallic bond is strengthened by adding or removing an electron, i.e. the charged species are much more stable than the neutral counterpart. For Ta-3, equilateral triangle with D-3h symmetry has the lowest energy for both neutral and charged species (near equilateral triangle for cation). TaO and its charged species have much larger dissociation energy compared with other tantalum oxides. For Ta2O and TaO2. structure with C-2v symmetry is much more stable than linear chains. For Ta3O, planar structure with doubly bridging oxygen atoms of C-2v, symmetry is the global minimum for both neutral and charged species. While for TaO3, three-dimensional structures are favored for both neutral (C-1 symmetry) and charged species (C-3v symmetry).

The IR spectrum and B-11 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectra of Al18B4O33 are presented and discussed in relation to the possible existence of boron atoms substituting for aluminum atoms. The IR spectrum shows that the strong vibrations of the BO3 groups are present in the 1 500 similar to1 200 cm(-1) region, and very weak bands of BO4 units art present in the region from 1 000 to 1 100 cm(-1). B-11 MAS NMR spectrum indicates that the strong signal for BOB units appears in the region from delta +5 to delta +20, and the very weak signal for BO4 units is at about delta -1, while Al-27 MAS NMR spectrum shows five peaks at about delta +62, +42.1, +14, -4.7 and -6.4, originating from AlO4, AlO4, AlO5, AlO6 and AlO6, respectively, These results reveal that there are minor BO4 units in Al18B4O33, indicating that a small amount of B atoms substitute for Al atoms in the 4-fold coordination.

The high-resolution emission spectra of KMgF3 : Eu and KMgF3 : Eu-X(X = Ce, Cr, Gd, Cu) single crystals were measured at 300 and 77 K. The vibronic side bands of Eu2+ were characterized and an assignment of the normal mode frequencies to particular vibrations has been made. The correlation between the vibronic frequencies of Eu2+ and the site substitution of other co-dopcd ions was first found. The relationship between vibronic intensity of Eu2+ and other doped ions concentration showed that Cr3+, Gd3+ ions competed K+ sites with Eu2+ ions. Ce3+ and Eu3+ occurred the electron transference. The introduction of Cu+ made for Eu2+ substuting for K+ sites.

The adsorption and oxidation of yeast RNA and herring sperm DNA (HS DNA) at glass carbon (GC) electrode are studied by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. Two oxidation peaks of yeast RNA are obtained by DPV, whose peak potentials shift negatively with increasing pH. The peak currents decrease gradually in successive scans and no corresponding reduction peaks occur, thus indicating that the oxidation process of yeast RNA is completely irreversible. The IR bands in the 1200-1800 cm-l range, attributed to the stretching and ring vibrations of nucleic acid bases, show the main spectral changes when the potential is shifted positively, which gives evidence that the oxidation process takes place in the base residues. The oxidation process of HS DNA is similar to that of yeast RNA. The results both from DPV and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry confirm that the guanine and adenine residues can be oxidized at the electrode surface, which is consistent with the oxidation mechanism of nucleic acids proposed previously. The infrared spect ra of N-n-(4-nitrophenyl)azophenyloxyalkyldiethanolamines (Cn) are examined in the range of 4000-400 cm(-1) at different temperatures and the assignment of the fundamental vibrations given. Based on (1) the localization of the broad absorption band at 3456 cm(-1), and (2) attribution of the associated OH bands centred at 1410-1390, 1100, and 650-634 cm(-1) to, respectively delta OH deformation, nu C-O stretching and gamma OH out-of-plane bending, intermolecular hydrogen bonding between OH groups in the crystalline, liquid crystalline and isotropic states is proposed. By considering the results of FTIR, WAXD and DSC measurements, the molecular arrangement of C10 in its smectic A phase as consisting of hydrogen bonding and strong interaction between dipolar groups (NO,) is proposed. This may explain the high stability and high orientational ordering property of Cn compounds in the liquid crystalline state compared with that of n-bromo-1-[4-(4-nitrophenyl)azophenyl]oxyalkanes (Bn).

The vibrational spectrum of the CaAl2B2O7 was investigated. It was shown that the vibrations of the BO3 groups are present in the region of 1400 similar to 600 cm(-1), and the bands at 519 nm(-1) may originate from the AlO6 vibration. The luminescence properties of Eu3+ in CaAl2B2O7 were investigated. It was found that the Eu3+ ion in CaAl2B2O7 occupies two different sites. Investigation on the phonon sideband of Eu3+ indicates that BO3 groups are present in the:surroundings of Eu3+ ions.
