Chemical-looping reforming (CLR) is a technology that can be used for partial oxidation and steam reforming of hydrocarbon fuels. It involves the use of a metal oxide as an oxygen carrier, which transfers oxygen from combustion air to the fuel. Composite oxygen carriers of cerium oxide added with Fe, Cu, and Mn oxides were prepared by co-precipitation and investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer and a fixed-bed reactor using methane as fuel and air as oxidizing gas. It was revealed that the addition of transition-metal oxides into cerium oxide can improve the reactivity of the Ce-based oxygen carrier. The three kinds of mixed oxides showed high CO and H-2 selectivity at above 800 degrees C. As for the Ce-Fe-O oxygen carrier, methane was converted to synthesis gas at a H-2/CO molar ratio close to 2:1 at a temperature of 800-900 degrees C; however, the methane thermolysis reaction was found on Ce-Cu-O and Ce-Mn-O oxygen carriers at 850-900 degrees C. Among the three kinds of oxygen carriers, Ce-Fe-O presented the best performance for methane CLR. On Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers, the CO and H-2 selectivity decreased as the Fe content increased in the carrier particles. An optimal range of the Ce/Fe molar ratio is Ce/Fe > 1 for Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the microstructure of the Ce-Fe-O oxides was not dramatically changed before and after 20 cyclic reactions. A small amount of Fe3C was found in the reacted Ce-Fe-O oxides by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.

A Cu-Zn-Al methanol catalyst combined with HZSM-5 was used for dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis from a syngas containing nitrogen, which was produced by air-partial oxidation of methane (air-POM). Air-POM occurred at 850 degreesC, 0.8 MPa, CH4/air/H2O/CO2 ratio of 1/2.4/0.8/0.4 over a Ni-based catalyst modified by magnesia and lanthanum oxide with 96% CH4 conversion and constantly gave syngas with a H-2/CO ratio of 2/1 during a period of 450 h. The obtained N-2-containing syngas was used directly for DME synthesis. About 90% CO per-pass conversion, 78% DME selectivity and 70% DME yield could be achieved during 450 h stability testing under the pressure of 5.0 MPa. the temperature of 240 degreesC and the space velocity of 1000 h(-1). A mixed-conducting perovskite-type Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCFO) ceramic membrane reactor with high oxygen permeability was applied for the activation of methane. The membrane reactor has intrinsic catalytic activities for methane conversion to ethane and ethylene. C-2 selectivity up to 40-70% was achieved, albeit that conversion rate were low, typically 0.5-3.5% at 800-900 degreesC with a 50% helium diluted methane inlet stream at a flow rate of 34 ml/min. Large amount of unreacted molecular oxygen was detected in the eluted gas and the oxygen permeation flux improved only slightly compared with that under non-reactive air/He experiments. The partial oxidation of methane to syngas in a BSCFO membrane reactor was also performed by packing LiLaNiO/gamma -Al2O3 with 10% Ni loading as the catalyst. At the initial stage, oxygen permeation flux, methane conversion and CO selectivity were closely related with the state of the catalyst. Less than 21 h was needed for the oxygen permeation flux to reach its steady state. 98.5% CH4 conversion, 93.0% CO selectivity and 10.45 ml/cm(2) min oxygen permeation flux were achieved under steady state at 850 degreesC. Methane conversion and oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing temperature, No fracture of the membrane reactor was observed during syngas production. However, H-2-TPR investigation demonstrated that the BSCFO was unstable under reducing atmosphere, yet the material was found to have excellent phase reversibility. A membrane reactor made from BSCFO was successfully operated for the POM reaction at 875 degreesC for more than 500h without failure, with a stable oxygen permeation flux of about 11.5 ml/cm(2) min. A novel process is developed in this paper for utilizing the coalmine-drained methane gas that is usually vented straight into the atmosphere in most coalmines worldwide. It is expected that low-cost syngas can be produced by the combined air partial oxidation and CO2 reforming of methane, because this process utilizes directly the methane, air, and carbon dioxide in the coalmine-drained gas without going through the separation step. For this purpose, a nickel-magnesia solid solution catalyst was prepared and its catalytic performance for the proposed process was investigated. It was found that calcination temperature has significant influence on the catalytic performance due to the different extent of solid solution formation in the catalysts. A uniform nickel-magnesia solid solution catalyst exhibits higher stability than the catalysts in which NiO has not completely formed solid solution with MgO. Its catalytic activity and selectivity remain stable during 120 h of reaction. The product H-2/CO ratio is mainly dependent on the feed gas composition. By changing CO2/air ratio of the feed gases, syngas with a H-2/CO ratio between 1 and 1.9 can be obtained. The influences of reaction temperature and nickel loading on the catalytic performance were also investigated. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Fuel cells are recognized as the most promising new power generation technology, but hydrogen supply is still a problem. In our previous work, we have developed a LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst, which is excellent not only for partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, but also for steam reforming and autothermal reforming. However, the reaction needs pure oxygen or air as oxidant. We have developed a dense oxygen permeable membrane Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 which has an oxygen permeation flux around 11.5 ml/cm(2) min at reaction conditions. Therefore, this work is to combine the oxygen permeable membrane with the catalyst LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 in a membrane reactor for hydrogen production by mixed reforming of heptane. Under optimized reaction conditions, a heptane conversion of 100%, a CO selectivity of 91-93% and a H-2 selectivity of 95-97% have been achieved. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In an attempt to effectively integrate catalytic partial oxidation (CPO) and steam reforming (SR) reactions on the same catalyst, autothermal reforming (ATR) of n-octane was addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and carried out on a non-pyrophoric catalyst 0.3 wt.% Ru/K2O-CeO2/gamma-Al2O3. The ATR of n-octane was more efficient at the molar ratio Of O-2/C 0.35-0.45 and H2O/C 1.6-2.2 (independent parameters), respectively, and reforming temperature of 750-800 degrees C (dependent parameter). Among the sophisticated reaction network, the main reaction thread was deducted as: long-chain hydrocarbon -> CH4, short-chain hydrocarbon -> CO2, CO and H-2 formation by steam reforming, although the parallel CPO, decomposition and reverse water gas shift reaction took place on the same catalyst. Low temperature and high steam partial pressure had more positive effect on CH4 SR to produce CO2 other than CO. This was verified by the tendency of the outlet reformate to the equilibrium at different operation conditions. Furthermore, the loss of active components and the formation of stable but less active components in the catalyst in the harsh ATR atmosphere firstly make the CO inhibition capability suffer, then eventually aggravated the ATR performance, which was verified by the characterizations of X-ray fluorescence, BET specific surface areas and temperature programmed reduction. Simultaneous nitrobenzene and phenol wet air oxidation was investigated in a stainless autoclave at temperature range of 180-220 ° C and 1.0 MPa oxygen partial pressure. Compared with the single oxidation of nitrobenzene under the same conditions, the presence of phenol in the reaction media greatly improved the removal efficiency of nitrobenzene. The effect of temperature on the reaction was studied. Phenol was considered as a type of initiator in the nitrobenzene oxidation. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In situ IR measurements for CO adsorption and preferential CO oxidation in H-2-rich gases over Ag/SiO2 catalysts are presented in this paper. CO adsorbed on the Ag/SiO2 pretreated with oxygen shows a band centered around 2169 cm(-1), which is assigned to CO linearly bonded to Ag+ sites. The amount of adsorbed CO on the silver particles ( manifested by an IR band at 2169 cm(-1)) depends strongly on the CO partial pressure and the temperature. The steady-state coverage on the Ag surface is shown to be significantly below saturation, and the oxidation of CO with surface oxygen species is probably via a non-competitive Langmuir Hinshelwood mechanism on the silver catalyst which occurs in the high-rate branch on a surface covered with CO below saturation. A low reactant concentration on the Ag surface indicates that the reaction order with respect to Pco is positive, and the selectivity towards CO2 decreases with the decrease of Pco. On the other hand, the decrease of the selectivity with the reaction temperature also reflects the higher apparent activation energy for H-2 oxidation than that for CO oxidation.

Composite coatings were obtained on A3 steel by hot dipping aluminum(HDA) at 720 ℃ for 6 min and micro-plasma oxidation(MPO) in alkali electrolyte. The surface morphology, element distribution and interface structure of composite coatings were studied by means of XRD, SEM and EDS. The results show that the composite coatings obtained through HDA/MPO on A3 steel consist of four layers. From the surface to the substrate, the layer is loose Al2O3 ceramic, compact Al2O3 ceramic, Al and FeAl intermetallic compound layer in turn. The adhesions among all the layers are strengthened because the ceramic layer formed at the Al surface originally, FeAl intermetallic compound layer and substrate are combined in metallurgical form through mutual diffusion during HDA process.Initial experiment results disclose that the anti-corrosion performance and wear resistance of composite coating are obviously improved through HDA/MPO treatment.
