Reactive compatibilization of ethylene-propylene copolymer functionalized with allyl (3-isocyanato-4-tolyl) carbamate (TAI) isocyanate (EPM-g-TAI) and polyamide 6 (PA6) was investigated in this paper, FTIR analysis revealed the evidence of a chemical reaction between the end groups of PA6 and EPM-g-TAI. Thermal, rheological, morphological, and mechanical properties of the resultant system were examined, DSC analysis indicated that the crystallization of PA6 in Pa6/EPM-g-TAI blends was inhibited, due to the chemical reaction that occurs at the interface of PA6 and EPM-g-TAI. Rheological measurement showed that complex viscosity and storage modulus of PA6/EPM-g-TAI were both dramatically enhanced compared to those of PA6/EPM at the same blending composition. After examining the morphology of both blending systems, smaller particile sizes, more homogeneous distribution of domains and improved interfacial adhesion between matrix and domains were observed in the compatibilized system. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength. Young's modulus, flexural strength and modulus, as well as notched and un-notched impact strength of PA6/EPM-g-TAI blends were also found to improve gradually with increasing the content of grafted TAI.

Organo-functionalized MCM-41 containing non-covalently linked 1,10-phenanthroline (denoted as Phen-MCM-41) was synthesized by template-directed co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and the modified phenanthroline (denoted as Phen-Si). XRD, FTIR, UV/VIS spectroscopy as well as luminescence spectroscopy were employed to characterize Phen-MCM-41. No disintegration or loss of the Phen-Si during the solvent extraction procedure could be observed. When monitored by the ligand absorption wavelength (272 nm), the undoped MCM-41 produces a broad band emission centered at 450 run, whereas europium (III) doped Phen-MCM-41 displays the emission of the Eu3+, i.e., D-5(0) --> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transition lines due to the energy transfer from the ligands to Eu3+ as well as a broad band emission centered at 442 nm.

Ethylene polymerization was carried out with zirconocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (or functionalized montmorillonite). The functionalized montmorillonite was from simple ion exchange of [CH3O2CCH2NH3](+) (MeGlyH(+)) ions with interlamellar cations of layered montmorillonites. The functionalized montmorillonlites [high-purity montmorillonite (MMT)-MeGlyH(+)] had larger interlayer spacing (12.69 Angstrom) than montmorillonites without treatment (9.65 Angstrom). The zirconocene catalyst system [Cp2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane (MAO)/MMT-MeGlyH(+)] had much higher Zr loading and higher activities than those of' other zirconocene catalyst systems (Cp2ZrCl2/MMT, Cp2ZrCl2/MMT-MeGlyH(+), Cp2ZrCl2/MAO/MMT, [CP2ZrCl](+)[BF4]/MMT, [Cp2ZrCl][BF4](-)/MMT-MeGlyH(+), [CP2ZrCl](+)[BF4](-)/MAO/MMT-MeGlyH(+), and [Cp2ZrCl](+)[BF4](-)/MAO/MMT). The polyethylenes with good bulk density were obtained from the catalyst systems, particularly (CP2ZrCl2/MAO/MMT-MeGlyH(1)). MeGlyH(+) and MAO seemed to play important roles for preparation of the supported zirconocenes and polymerization of ethylene. The difference in Zr loading and catalytic activity among the supported zirconocene catalysts is discussed.

An amperometric biosensor for monitoring phenols in the organic phase was constructed by the silica sol-gel immobilization of tyrosinase on a glassy carbon electrode. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials with different sol-gel precursors and polymers were optimized, and the experimental conditions, such as the effect of the solvent, operational potential and enzyme loading were explored for the optimum analytical performance of the enzyme electrode. The biosensor can reach 95% of steady-state current in about 18 s, and the trend in the sensitivity of different phenols is as follows: catechol > phenol >p-cresol. In addition, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constants (K-m(app)) and the stability of the enzyme electrode were discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Nanogold colloidal solutions are prepared by the reduction of HAuClO4 with sodium citrate and sodium borohydride. 4-Aminothiophenol (ATP) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are formed on gold(lll) surface, on which gold nanoparticles are immobilized and a sub-monolayer of the particles appears. This sub-monolayer of gold nanoparticles is characterized with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and a dual energy barrier tunneling model is proposed to explain the imageability of the gold nanoparticles by STM. This model can also be used to construct multiple energy barrier structure on solid/liquid interface and to evaluate the electron transport ability of some organic monolayers with the aid of electrochemical method.

Polyamide (PA)1010 is blended with a saturated polyolefin elastomer, ethylene-cu-olefin copolymer (EOCP). To improve the compatibility of PA1010 with EOCP, different grafting rates of EOCP with maleic anhydride (MA) are used. The reaction between PA1010 and EOCP-g-MA during extrusion is verified through an extraction test. Mechanical properties, such as notched Izod impact strength, elongation at break, etc., are examined as a function of grafting rate and weight fraction of elastomer. It was found that in the scale of grafting rate (0.13-0.92 wt %), 0.51 wt % is an extreme point for several mechanical properties. Elastomer domains of PA1010/ EOCP-g-MA blends show a finer and more uniform dispersion in the matrix than that of PA1010/EOCP blends. For the same grafting rate, the average sizes of elastomer particles are almost independent on the contents of elastomer, but for different grafting rates, the particle sizes are decreased with increasing grafting rate. The copolymer formed during extrusion strengthens the interfacial adhesion and acts as an emulsifier to prevent the aggregation of elastomer in the process of blending. Novel water insoluble sodium sulfonate-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone)s containing cyclohexylidene in the main chain with degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized from nucleophilic polycondensation of 5, 5'-carbonylbis (2-fluorobenzenesulfonate), 4, 4'-difluorobenzophenone and 4, 4'-cyclohexylidenebisphenol. The polymers showed excellent thermal stability and good water resistance as well. The DSC diagrams and WAXD patterns indicated an amorphous morphological structure of these polymers. A comprison of some properties between these copolymers and polymers derived from bisphenol A was given.

Novel sodium sulfonate-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone)s derived from 4,4'-thiodiphenol with degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized by nucleophilic polycondensation of various amount of 5,5 '-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1) and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (2) with 4,4'-thiodipheno (3). Component and structure of the polymers were confirmed by TR, NMR and elemental analysis. Wide angle X-ray diffraction patterns indicated an amorphous structure of the polymers. The interface behavior of polyamide 1010 (PA1010) and polypropylene (PP) was studied. In order to improve their interfacial adhesion, functional PP was prepared by means of grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on PP main chains and used instead of plain PP. Several technological characterizations were performed here on their interfaces. ESCA was used to confirm that some kind of reaction occurred between end groups of PA1010 and epoxy species of PP-g-GMA. The peel test was adopted to measure interfacial adhesion. It was found that the fracture energy of interfaces between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA was dramatically increased with the content of GMA. Their interfaces were observed as being blurred by using SEM and TEM and a crack that could be seen in the case of the interfaces of the PA1010 and the plain PP disappeared.

A novel functionalized inorganic-organic hybrid material with cation exchange property was prepared by sol-gel method. The H2O2 biosensor was fabricated by simply dipping the horseradish peroxidase-containing functionalized membrane modified electrode into Meldola's blue (MDB) solution. MDB was adsorbed and firmly immobilized within the membrane. The electrochemical behavior of MDB incorporated in the membrane was more reversible compared with that of the solution species and suitable as mediator for the horseradish peroxidase. The response time was less than 25 s. Linear range is up to 0.6 mM (COH. coeff. 0.9998) with detection Limit of 9 x 10(-7) M. High sensitivity of 75 nA mu M cm(-2) was obtained due to high MDB-loading. The biosensor exhibited a good stability. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new monomer, sodium 5,5'-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1), was synthesized by sulfonation of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (2) with fuming sulfuric acid. Poly(ether ether ketone)s containing sodium sulfonate groups were synthesized directly via aromatic nucleophilic substitution from the sodium sulfonate-functionalized monomer 1 and Bisphenol A (3) in the presence of potassium carbonate in dimethyl sulfoxide. The polycondensation proceeds without any side reactions. The differential scanning calorimetry measurement indicated that the polymers are amorphous and the glass transition temperatures increase with the content of sodium sulfonate groups in the polymer chain. The degree of substitution with sodium sulfonate groups has strong influence on their thermal stability and solubility.

Electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing viologen group are formed through the adsorption of thiol-functionalized viologen compound CH3(CH2)(9)V2+(CH2)(8)SH, where V2+ is N,N'-dialkylbipyridinium (i.e. a viologen group), onto gold electrodes from methanol/water solution and its electrochemical behavior is investigated ty Ac voltammetry and square wave voltammetry, which have the high sensitivity against background charging. The viologen SAM formed is a sub-monolayer and the normal potentials corresponding to the two successive one-electron transfer processes of the active centers (viologen) are -360 mV and -750 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer solutions (pH 6.96) respectively, and the standard electron transfer rate constant is 9.0 s(-1). The electrochemical behavior of this SAM in various solutions has been preliminarily discussed.
