By doping a fluorescent dye in the emissive layer, we realized high efficient red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on a europium complex. The OLEDs realized by this method showed pure red emission at 612 nm with a full width at half maximum Of 3 nm. The Commission International de L'Eclairage Coordination keeps approximately the same as the emission of pure Eu3+. The maximum brightness and EL efficiency reached 2450 cd/m(2) at 20 V and 9.0 cd/A (6.0 lm/w) at a current density of 0.012 mA/cm(2), respectively. At the brightness of 100 cd/m(2), the current efficiency reached 4.4 cd/A.

The amplified spontaneous emission and gain characteristics of various fluorescent dyes, 2-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6(2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1,1,7,7-tetramethyl-1H,5H-benzo[ij] quinolizin-9-1)ethenyl)-4H-pyran-4-ylidene) propanedinitrile (DCJTB) and 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethyl-aminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), doped in polystyrene (PS) matrices were studied and compared. It was found that DCJTB has a larger net gain, 40.72 cm(-1), a lower loss, 2.49 cm(-1), and a lower threshold, 0.16 (mJ/pulse)/cm(2), than DCM, which has a net gain of 11.95 cm(-1), a loss of 9.25 cm(-1), and a threshold of 4(mJ/pulse)/cm(2). The improvement of performance in DCJTB PS films is attributed to the larger free volume of DCJTB caused by the introduction of steric spacer groups into the DCJTB molecule.

The effect of the concentration of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-t-butyl-6(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl- 9-enyl)-4H-pyran(DCJTB) as dopant in tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium (Alq(3)) on the charge carrier recombination was studied by transient electroluminescence (EL). The electron-hole recombination coefficient (gamma) was determined from the long-time component of the temporal decay of the EL intensity after a rectangular voltage pulse was turned off. It was found that the coefficient monotonically decreased with an increase in the DCJTB-doping concentration. The monotonic decrease is attributed to concentration quenching on the excitons and coincided well with the reduction of the EL efficiency.

A surface emitting microcavity was formed by sandwiching a polymer film containing poly(N-vinyleabzole) (PVK). 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminium (Alq(3)) and 4-(Dicyanome thylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-Pyran(DCM) between a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with a reflectivity of 99% and a silver film. The sample was optically pumped with 250 ps pulses at 2 Hz repetition rate by a 355 nm line of the third harmonic of a mode-lock Nd:YAG laser. The lasing phenomenon was observed in DCM-doped PVK microcavity. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) was 3 nm with the peak wavelength at 602 nm. Optically pumped stimulated emission behavior in an organic film was demonstrated in this study. The gain material consists of a laser dye perylene doped into polystyrene (PS) matrix in an appropriate weight ratio. The sample was transversely pumped by the three harmonic output of a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. The change of the emission spectra showed a clear threshold action and gain narrowing phenomenon when increasing the excitation intensity. Three emission peaks were observed below the excitation threshold, which are locate at 446, 475 and 506 nm, respectively. However, only the gain narrowing peak centered at 475 nm could be detected above the threshold. The spectra narrowing observed results from the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in the gain material. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Bright blue electroluminescent devices have been fabricated using poly (N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) doped with perylene as the emissive layer, poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) as the hole-transporting layer, 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD), tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq(3)) as the electron-transporting layer, and Al as the cathode. A luminance of 700 cd/m(2) and a luminescent efficiency of 0.8% are achieved at a drive voltage of 36 V. In the experiment, it is found that the introduction of electron-transporting layer PBD has a great effect on the emissive color of the electroluminescent devices prepared by PVK doped with perylene. Yellow-green emission is observed from the device structure of glass substrate/indium-tin-oxide/PVK:perylene/Al. The possible emissive mechanisms are given. The effect of the transporting layer on the electroluminescence is also discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) were prepared by adsorbing different dyes, including methylene blue (MB), toluidine blue (TB) and brilliant cresyl blue (BCB), onto glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) with anodic pretreatment. The electrochemical reactions of adsorbed dyes are fairly reversible at low coverages. The CMEs are more stable in acid solutions than in alkaline ones, which is mainly due to decomposition of the dyes in the latter media. They exhibit an excellent catalytic ability for the oxidation of nicotinamide coenzymes (NADH and NADPH). The formation of a charge transfer complex between the coenzyme and the adsorbed mediator has been demonstrated using a rotating disk electrode. The charge transfer complex decomposition is a slow step in the overall electrode reaction process. Some kinetic parameters are estimated. Dependence of the electrocatalytic activity of the CMEs on the solution pH is discussed.

The fluorescence spectra and lifetimes of the ternary due mixture C440/C540/Saf. -T were studies. The combination of chemical and biological water treatment processes is a promising technique to reduce recalcitrant wastewater loads. The key to the efficiency of such a system is a better understanding of the mechanisms involved during the degradation processes. Ozonation has been applied to many fields in water and wastewater treatment. Especially for effluents of textile finishing industry ozonation can achieve high color removal, enhance biodegradability, destroy phenols and reduce the COD. However, little is known about the reaction intermediates and products formed during ozonation. This work focuses on the oxidative degradation of purified (>90%), hydrolyzed Reactive Red 120 (Color Index), a widely used azo dye in the textile finishing processes with two monochlorotriazine anchor groups. Ozonation of the dye in ultra pure water was performed in a laboratory scale cylindrical batch reactor. Decolorization, determined by measuring the light absorbance at the maximum wavelength in the visible range (53 5 nm), was almost complete after 150 min with an ozone concentration of 12.8 mg/l. The TOC/TOC0 ratio was about 74% and the COD was diminished to 46% of the initial value. The BOD5/COD ratio increased from 0.01 to 0.14. To obtain detailed information on the reaction processes during ozonation and the resulting oxidation products organic and inorganic anions were analyzed. Oxidation and cleavage of the azo group yielded nitrate. Cleavage of the sulfonic acid groups of aromatic rings caused an increase in the amount of sulfate. Formic acid and oxalic acid were identified as main oxidation products by high performance ion chromatography (HPIC). The concentrations of these major products were monitored at defined time intervals during ozonation.
