Coadsorption of ferrocene-terminated alkanethiols (FcCO(2)(CH2)(8)SH, Fc=(mu(5)-C5H5)Fe(mu(5)-C5H4)) with alkylthiophene thiols (2-mercapto-3-n-octylthiophene) yields stable, electroactive self-assembled monolayers on gold. The resulting mixed monolayer provides an energetically favorable hydrophobic surface for the adsorption of the surfactant aggregates in aqueous solution. The adsorptions have been characterized via their effect on the redox properties of ferrocenyl alkanethiols immobilized as minority components in the monolayers and on the interfacial capacitance of the electrode. Surfactant adsorption causes a decrease in the overall capacitance at the electrode and dramatically shifts the redox potential for ferrocene oxidation in a positive or negative direction depending on the identity of the surfactant employed. A structural model is proposed in which the alkane chains of the adsorbed surfactants interdigitate with those of the underlying self-assembled monolayer, leading to the formation of a hybrid bilayer membrane.

A layer-by-layer (LbL) adsorption and polymerization method was developed for the controllable preparation of polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles within ultrathin films. By repetitive adsorption of pyrrole and subsequent polymerization with 12-molybdophosphoric acid, the polyelectrolyte multilayer films containing PPy nanoparticles were fabricated. UV-visible absorption spectrocopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammograras (CVs) were used to characterize the PPy nanoparticles and their multilayer thin films. UV-visible spectra indicate that the growth of PPy nanoparticles was regular and occurred within the polyelectrolyte films. The size of prepared PPy nanoparticles was found by TEM to increase with the increasing of polymerization cycles. The electrochemistry behavior of the multilayer thin films was studied in detail on ITO. The results suggest that the LbL adsorption and polymerization method developed herein provides an effective way to prepare PPy nanoparticles in the polymer matrix.

Tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) was applied to study the adsorption behavior of methanol on mica, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates. On mica and HOPG substrates surfaces, the thin films of methanol with bilayer and multilayer were observed, respectively. The formation of irregular islands of methanol was also found on HOPG surface. On ITO surface only aggregates and clusters of methanol molecules were formed. The influence of sample preparation on the adsorption was discussed.

Phenolic resin/clay nanocomposites were prepared using a suspension condensation polymerization method that was suitable to both novolac and resole. Natural montmorillonite and two kinds of organic modified montmorillonite were adopted to investigate the effect of modification on the final morphology of the nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) observations showed that clay platelets were easier to be exfoliated or intercalated in novolac than in resole because novolac usually has a linear structure. The modifier with a phenyl ring was more compatible with novolac (or resole) than the aliphatic type modifier. The influence of curing on the morphology was studied as well. An exfoliation-adsorption and in situ condensation mechanism was proposed on the formation of the nanocomposites.

The assembly of alternating DNA and positively charged poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayer films by electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption has been studied. The real-time surface plasmon resonance (BIAcore) technique was used to characterize and monitor the formation of multilayer films in solution in real time continuously. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and UV-vis absorbance measurements were also used to study the film assembly, and linear film growth was observed. All the results indicate that the uniform multilayer can be obtained on the poly(ethylenimine)- (PEI-) coated substrate surface. The kinetics of the adsorption of DNA on PDDA surface was also studied by the real-time BIAcore technique; the observed rate constant was calculated using a Langmuir model (k(obs) = (1.28 +/- 0.08) x 10(-2) s(-1).

The elucidation of key influence factors for electrostatic adsorption is very important to control protein nonspecific adsorption on modified surfaces. In this study, real-time surface plasmon resonance technique is used to characterize the electrostatic adsorption of two proteins (mouse IgG and protein A) on carboxymethyldextran-modified surface. The results show that protein solution pH and ionic strength are key influence factors for efficient electrostatic adsorption. The influence of protein, solution pH on the amount of electrostatic adsorption depends on the type of the charge and the charge density of both protein and modified matrix on the surface. The electrostatic adsorption process involves a competition between the positively charged protein and other positively charged species in the buffer solution. A decrease of ionic strength leads to an increasing electrostatic adsorption. The kinetic adsorption constants of protein A at different pH values were also calculated and compared.

In situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) and an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) have been employed to follow the adsorption/desorption processes of phenanthraquinone (PQ sat. in 0.1 mol l(-1) HClO4, solution) accompanied with an electrochemical redox reaction on the Au electrode. The result shows that: (1) the reduced form PQH(2) adsorbed at the Au electrode and the desorption occurred when PQH(2) was oxidized to PQ; (2) the adsorption process initiates at steps or kinks which provide high active sites on the electrode surface for adsorption, and as the potential shifts to negative, a multilayer of PQH(2) may be formed at the Au electrode; (3) the reduced PQH(2) adsorbed preferentially in the area where the tip had been scanned continually; this result suggests that the tip induction may accelerate the adsorption of PQH(2) on the Au(111) electrode. Two kinds of possible reason have been discussed; (4) high resolution STM images show the strong substrate lattice information and the weak monolayer adsorbate lattice information simultaneously. The PQH(2) molecules pack into a not perfectly ordered condensed physisorbed layer at potentials of 0.1 and 0.2 V with an average lattice constant a = 11.5 +/- 0.4 Angstrom, b = 11.5 +/- 0.4 Angstrom, and gamma = 120 +/- 2 degrees; the molecular lattice is rotated with respect to the substrate lattice by about 23 +/- 2 degrees. Adsorption and activation of small molecules NO, CO and CO+ NO on LaSrCuO4, La2CuO4 and La1.7Th0.3CuO4 which are typical samples in the sence of nonstoichiometric oxygen(lambda) anrong the series of La2-x(SrTh)(x)CuO4 +/-lambda mixed oxide catalysts were studied by means of MS- TPD (TPSR ), XRD, chemical analysis and so on. It was shown that the adsorption amount of NO can be correlated with the content of oxygen vacancy while the types and strength of adsorption of NO could be related to the oxidation state of the metallic ion. It was also found that CO molecule was first converted into CO32- and then desorbed in the form of CO2 at high temperature during the adsorption and desorption of CO on the mixed oxide with oxygen vacancy. The fact that the profiles of TPD(TPSR) of NO in co-adsorption of NO+CO and in single NO adsorption are similar shows that the adsorption of NO molecule not only has some priority to that of CO but also is stronger than that of CO. It seems that the adsorption of NO plays a dominate role in the activation and decomposition of NO.

The adsorption of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface has been studied by spectroelectrochemistry with a long optical path length thin-layer cell (LOPTLC) for the first time. A fine adsorption isotherm of CPB molecules from an aqueous solution containing 0.10 M KBr has been obtained over the range of (1.00-8.00) x 10(-5) M. From theoretical calculation and experimental data, adsorption of CPB on the GC electrode surface shows four distinct orientations and three large orientation transitions. Compared with the ordinary isotherm, the differential isotherm is more characteristic and would be suitable for the study of orientation transitions of organic compounds. With a theoretical treatment of the adsorption isotherm, four orientations of adsorbed CPB on a GC electrode surface coincide with the Frumkin-Langmuir type. From adsorption parameters the Frumkin-Langmuir equations, the adsorption free energy and, therefore, the equilibrium constants of orientation transitions of the CPB molecule can be obtained.

R-phycoerythrin was isolated and purified from Gracilaria verrucosa on an expanded-bed adsorption column combined with ion-exchange chromatography, which can effectively solve the problem of blockage of chromatographic columns due to polysaccharides during isolation and purification of phycobiliproteins. 0.1 M (NH4)(2)SO4 proved best to elute R-phycoerythrin from the expanded-bed column, and desalted 0.1 M (NH4)(2)SO4 eluate was used on an ion-exchange column to purify the R-phycoerythrin. Using this two-stage chromatography, the purity (OD565/OD280) of the R-phycoerythrin from G. verrucosa is increased to 4.4, and the yield of purified R-phycoerythrin can reach 0.141 mg . g(-1) of the frozen alga.

A newly synthesized benzoic-triazole derivative 3,5-dimethylbenzoic acid [1,2,4]triazol-l-ylmethyl ester (DBT) was investigated as a corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in 1 M HCl solution using weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization, SEM, and EIS methods. The results revealed that DBT was an excellent inhibitor, and the inhibition efficiencies obtained from weight loss and electrochemical experiments were in good agreement. Using the potentiodynamic polarization technique, the inhibitor was proved to have a mixed-type character for mild steel by suppressing both anodic and cathodic reactions on the metal surface. The number of water molecules (X) replaced by a molecule of organic adsorbate was determined from the Flory-Huggins, Dhar-Flory-Huggins, and Bockris-Swinkels substitutional adsorption isotherms applied to the data obtained from the gravimetric experiments performed on a mild steel specimen in 1 M HCl solution at 298 K.
