This work is devoted to study of the slip phenomenon between phases in water-oil two-phase flow in horizontal pipes. The emphasis is placed on the effects of input fluids flow rates, pipe diameter and viscosities of oil phase on the slip. Experiments were conducted to measure the holdup in two horizontal pipes with 0.05 m diameter and 0.025 m diameter, respectively, using two different viscosities of white oil and tap water as liquid phases. Results showed that the ratios of in situ oil to water velocity at the pipe of small diameter are higher than those at the pipe of big diameter when having same input flow rates. At low input water flow rate, there is a large deviation on the holdup between two flow systems with different oil viscosities and the deviation becomes gradually smaller with further increased input water flow rate. The present paper describes a numerical two-way coupling model for shock-induced laminar boundary-layer flows of a dust-laden gas and studies the transverse migration of fine particles under the action of Saffman lift force. The governing equations are formulated in the dilute two-phase continuum framework with consideration of the finiteness of the particle Reynolds and Knudsen numbers. The full Lagrangian method is explored for calculating the dispersed-phase flow fields (including the number density of particles) in the regions of intersecting particle trajectories. The computation results show a significant reaction of the particles on the two-phase boundary-layer structure when the mass loading ratio of particles takes finite values.

Two research projects on pool boiling in microgravity have been conducted aboard the Chinese recoverable satellites. Ground-based experiments have also been performed both in normal gravity and in short-term microgravity in the Drop Tower Beijing. Steady boiling of R113 on thin platinum wires was studied with a temperature-controlled heating method, while quasi-steady boiling of FC-72 on a plane plate was investigated with an exponentially increasing heating voltage. In the first case, slight enhancement of heat transfer is observed in microgravity, while diminution is evident for high heat flux in the second one. Lateral motions of bubbles on the heaters are observed before their departure in microgravity. The surface oscillation of the merged bubbles due to lateral coalescence between adjacent bubbles drives it to detach from the heaters. The Marangoni effect on the bubble behavior is also discussed. The perspectives for a new project DEPA-SJ10, which has been planned to be flown aboard the Chinese recoverable satellite SJ-10 in the future, are also presented.

Microgravity fluid physics is an important part of microgravity sciences, which consists of simple fluids of many new systems, gas-liquid two-phase flow and heat transfer, and complex fluid mechanics. In addition to the importance of itself in sciences and applications, microgravity fluid physics closely relates to microgravity combustion, space biotechnology and space materials science, and promotes the developments of interdisciplinary fields. Many space microgravity experiments have been per- formed on board the recoverable satellites and space ships of China and pushed the rapid development of microgravity sciences in China. In the present paper, space experimental studies and the main re- sults of the microgravity fluid science in China in the last 10 years or so are introduced briefly.

A novel method to construct a quality map, called modulation-phase-gradient variance (MPGV), is proposed, based on modulation and the phase gradient. The MPGV map is successfully applied to two phase-unwrapping algorithms - the improved weighted least square and the quality-guided unwrapping algorithm. Both simulated and experimental data testify to the validity of our proposed quality map. Moreover, the unwrapped-phase results show that the new quality map can have higher reliability than the conventional phase-derivative variance quality map in helping to unwrap noisy, low-modulation, and/or discontinuous phase maps. The not only lower but also uniform MEMS chip temperatures can he reached by selecting suitable boiling number range that ensures the nucleate boiling heat transfer. In this article, boiling heat transfer experiments in 10 silicon triangular microchannels with the hydraulic diameter of 55.4 mu m were performed using acetone as the working fluid, having the inlet liquid temperatures of 24-40 degrees C, mass fluxes of 96-360 kg/m(2)s, heat fluxes of 140-420 kW/m(2), and exit vapor mass qualities of 0.28-0.70. The above data range correspond to the boiling number from 1.574 x 10(-3) to 3.219 x 10(-3) and ensure the perfect nucleate boiling heat transfer region, providing a very uniform chip temperature distribution in both streamline and transverse directions. The boiling heat transfer coefficients determined by the infrared radiator image system were found to he dependent on the heat Axes only, not dependent on the mass Axes and the vapor mass qualities covering the above data range. The high-speed flow visualization shows that the periodic flow patterns take place inside the microchannel in the time scale of milliseconds, consisting of liquid refilling stage, bubble nucleation, growth and coalescence stage, and transient liquid film evaporation stage in a full cycle. The paired or triplet bubble nucleation sites can occur in the microchannel corners anywhere along the flow direction, accounting for the nucleate boiling heat transfer mode. The periodic boiling process is similar to a series of bubble nucleation, growth, and departure followed by the liquid refilling in a single cavity for the pool boiling situation. The chip temperature difference across the whole two-phase area is found to he small in a couple of degrees, providing a better thermal management scheme for the high heat flux electronic components. Chen's [11 widely accepted correlation for macrochannels and Bao et al.'s [21 correlation obtained in a copper capillary tube with the inside diameter of 1.95 mm using R11 and HCFC123 as working fluids can predict the present experimental data with accepted accuracy. Other correlations fail to predict the correct heat transfer coefficient trends. New heat transfer correlations are also recommended.

Transient flow patterns and bubble slug lengths were investigated with oxygen gas (O-2) bubbles produced by catalytic chemical reactions using a high speed camera bonded with a microscope. The microreactor consists of an inlet liquid plenum, nine parallel rectangular microchannels followed by a micronozzle, using the MEMS fabrication technique. The etched surface was deposited by the thin platinum film, which is acted as the catalyst. Experiments were performed with the inlet mass concentration of the hydrogen peroxide from 50% to 90% and the pressure drop across the silicon chip from 2.5 to 20.0 kPa. The silicon chip is directly exposed in the environment thus the heat released via the catalytic chemical reactions is dissipated into the environment and the experiment was performed at the room temperature level. It is found that the two-phase flow with the catalytic chemical reactions display the cyclic behavior. A full cycle consists of a short fresh liquid refilling stage, a liquid decomposition stage followed by the bubble slug flow stage. At the beginning of the bubble slug flow stage, the liquid slug number reaches maximum, while at the end of the bubble slug flow stage the liquid slugs are quickly flushed out of the microchannels. Two or three large bubbles are observed in the inlet liquid plenum, affecting the two-phase distributions in microchannels. The bubble slug lengths, cycle periods as well as the mass flow rates are analyzed with different mass concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and pressure drops. The bubble slug length is helpful for the selection of the future microreactor length ensuring the complete hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Future studies on the temperature effect on the transient two-phase flow with chemical reactions are recommended.

A marine green alga, Platymonas subcordiformis, was demonstrated to photobiologically evolve hydrogen (H-2) after the first stage of photosynthesis, when subjected to a two-phase incubation protocol in a second stage of H2 production: anaerobic incubation in the dark followed by the exposure to light illumination. The anaerobic incubation induced hydrogenase activity to catalyse H? evolution in the following phase of light illumination. H,) evolution strongly depended upon the duration of anaerobic incubation, deprivation of sulphur (S) from the medium and the medium pH. An optimal anaerobic incubation period of 32 h gave the maximum H2 evolution in the second phase in the absence of sulphur. Evolution of H,) was greatly enhanced by 13 times when S was deprived from the medium. This result suggests that S plays a critical role in the mediation of H-2 evolution from R subcordiformis. A 14-fold increase in H-2 production was obtained when the medium pH increased from 5 to 8; with a sharp decline at pH above eight. H-2 evolution was enhanced by 30-50% when supplementing the optimal concentrations of 25 mM acetate and 37.5 mM glucose. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dynamics of dewetting and phase separation in ultrathin films (thickness is ca. one radius of gyration, approximate to 1 R-g) of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN) blends on Si substrate has been studied by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). In the miscible region, a "spinodal-like" dewetting driven by a composition fluctuation recently predicted by Wensink and Jerome (Langmuir 2002, 18, 413) occurs. In the two-phase region, the dewetting of the whole film is followed by phase separation in the droplets, coupling with the wetting of the substrate by the PMMA extracted by the strong attractive interaction between them.

Based on Takayanagi's two-phase model, a three-phase model including the matrix, interfacial region, and fillers is proposed to calculate the tensile modulus of polymer nanocomposites (E-c). In this model, fillers (sphere-, cylinder- or plate-shape) are randomly distributed in a matrix. If the particulate size is in the range of nanometers, the interfacial region will play an important role in the modulus of the composites. Important system parameters include the dispersed particle size (t), shape, thickness of the interfacial region (tau), particulate-to-matrix modulus ratio (E-d/E-m), and a parameter (k) describing a linear gradient change in modulus between the matrix and the surface of particle on the modulus of nanocomposites (E-c). The effects of these parameters are discussed using theoretical calculation and nylon 6/montmorillonite nanocomposite experiments. The former three factors exhibit dominant influence on E-c At a fixed volume fraction of the dispersed phase, smaller particles provide an increasing modulus for the resulting composite, as compared to the larger one because the interfacial region greatly affects E-c. Moreover, since the size of fillers is in the scale of micrometers, the influence of interfacial region is neglected and the deduced equation is reduced to Takayanagi's model. The curves predicted by the three-phase model are in good agreement with experimental results. The percolation concept and theory are also applied to analyze and interpret the experimental results.

A blend of polyethersulfone (PES) and polycarbonate (PC) with a ratio of 40/60 was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the PES-PC blend is a partially miscible, two-phase system, and an interfacial layer exists between the phases of PES and PC. Specific interaction resulting from the n-complex between PES and PC provides the driving force for formation of the interfacial layer. In addition, phase inversion behavior was also observed for the 40/60 composition.

Oil and gas migration is very important for theoretical hydrocarbon geology study and exploration practice, but related research is weak. Physical simulation is a main method to study oil migration. Systematic experiments were done to quantitatively describe the migration patterns, path characters and oil saturation by adjusting the possible dynamic factors respectively. The following conclusions were drawn. 1. Darcy velocity and pore throat diameter were calculated according to seepage cross-sectional area and glass beads arrangement. With such normalized Darcy velocity and pore throat diameter, the date from one and two dimensional experiments can be reasonably drawn in two phase diagrams. It is found that the migration pattern can be identified using only one dimensionless number L which is defined as the ration of capillary number and Bond number. 2. Oil saturated in the pores between glass beads was used as calibration and oil saturation in the path was measured by magnetic resonance imaging. The results show that oil saturation in the center of migration path can reach 100%, is higher than oil saturation in the edge of migration path. 3. Percolation backbone during secondary oil migration was identified experimentally using Hele-Shaw cell. The backbone formed mainly because of the spatial variation of the cluster conductivity caused by oil saturation heterogeneity, main resistant force change, and path shrinkage and snap-off. Percolation backbone improves hydrocarbon migration efficiency and is a favorable factor for reservoir forming. 4. In the three dimensional filling models, the thickness of the secondary migration path is mall. It is only 2.5cm even for the piston pattern. Inclination of the model is the main influencing factor of the secondary path width.
