We report a new method for calculating transmission coefficients across arbitrary potential barriers based on the Runge-Kutta method. A numerical solution of the Schrodinger equation is calculated using the Runge-Kutta method, and a new model is established to analyze the numerical results to find the transmission coefficient. This technique is applied to various cases, such as parabolic potential barrier and double-barrier structures. Transmission probability with high precision is obtained and discussed. The tunnelling current density through a MOS structure is also explored and the result coincides with the Fowler-Nordheim model, which indicates the applicability of our method.

Design and fabrication of a parallel optical transmitter are reported. The optimized 12 channel parallel optical transmitter, with each channel's data rate up to 3Gbit/s,is designed, assembled, and measured. A top-emitting 850nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser(VCSEL) array is adopted as the light source, and the VCSEL chip is directly wire bonded to a 12 channel driver IC. The outputs of the VCSEL array are directly butt coupled into a 12 channel fiber array. Small form factor pluggable (SFP) packaging technology is used in the module to support hot pluggable in application. The performance results of the module are demonstrated. At an operating current of 8mA, an eye diagram at 3Gbit/s is achieved with an optical output of more than 1mW.

This paper reports on the design, fabrication, and performance of an integrated electro-absorptive modulated laser based on butt-joint configuration for 10Gbit/s application. This paper mainly aims at two aspects. One is to improve the optical coupling between the laser and modulator; another is to increase the bandwidth of such devices by reducing the capacitance parameter of the modulator. The integrated devices exhibit high static and dynamic characteristics. Typical threshold current is 15mA,with some value as low as 8mA. Output power at 100mA is more than 10mW. The extinction characteristics, modulation bandwidth, and electrical return loss are measured. 3dB bandwidth more than 10GHz is monitored.

We investigate the electron transport through a double-slit-like Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring with a quantum dot (QD) embedded in one of its arms. Considering both the resonance of the dot and interference effect, the magnitude and phase of the transmission amplitude through the QD are calculated using Green's function approach. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

In this paper we proposed a single ridge waveguide electroabsorption modulated distributed feedback laser (EML) for long-haul high-speed optical fiber communication system. This EML was successfully fabricated by two step metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) including selective area growth (SAG) and helium partially implantation. No obvious changes of the threshold current (< 0.2 mA), extinction ratio (< 0.1 dB), output power (< 0.2 dBm) and isolation resistance were achieved in the preliminary aging test. With 2.5 Gb/s NRZ modulation, no power penalty was observed after the optical signal was transmitted through 280 Km normal single mode fiber.

This paper reports that the transmission of O6+ ions with energy of 150keV through capillaries in an uncoated Al2O3 membrane was measured, and agreements with previously reported results in general angular distribution of the transmitted ions and the transmission fractions as a function of the tilt angle well fitted to Gaussian-like functions were observed. Due to using an uncoated capillary membrane, our c is larger than that using a gold-coated one with a smaller value of E-p/q, which suggests a larger equilibrium charge Q(infinity) in our experiment. The observed special width variation with time and a larger width than that using a smaller E-p/q were qualitatively explained by using mean-field classical transport theory based on a classical-trajectory Monte Carlo simulation.

The neutron-rich nucleus He-8 is selected by RIBLL from the breakup of 50MeV/u C-13 on be target at HIRFL. The 2n-removal and 4n-removal cross section of He-8 was measured by using the transmission method. The point that He-4 is He-8 core can be reduced from the experiment data via the Ogawa's theory.

Considering the fact, in the real world, that information is transmitted with a time delay, we study an evolutionary spatial prisoner's dilemma game where agents update strategies according to certain information that they have learned. In our study, the game dynamics are classified by the modes of information learning as well as game interaction, and four different combinations, i.e. the mean-field case, case I, case II and local case, are studied comparatively. It is found that the time delay in case II smoothes the phase transition from the absorbing states of C (or D) to their mixing state, and promotes cooperation for most parameter values. Our work provides insights into the temporal behavior of information and the memory of the system, and may be helpful in understanding the cooperative behavior induced by the time delay in social and biological systems.

We studied the possible role that marine microalgae may play during the outbreaks of WSS (white spot syndrome). In order to elucidate the possibility of marine microalgae carrying WSSV (white spot syndrome virus), six marine microallgae (Isochr.vsis galbana, Skeletonema costatum, Chlorella sp., Heterosigma akashiwo, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Dunaliella salina) were co-cultured with adult Marsupenaeus japollicus infected with WSSV and were assayed daily by nested-PCR to study whether they could carry WSSV. Further experiments were conducted to investigate whether the virus carried by microalgae could re-infect juvenile M. japonicus. Results showed that all of the experimental microalgae, except H. akashiwo could carry WSSV, and among them, Chlorella sp. and S. trochoidea had the strongest WSSV-carrying ability. Unlike other invertebrate carriers of WSSV, the WSSV detections in microalgae, which were positive after I and 3 days, were negative after 10 days of incubation. WSSV detection results in juvenile M. japonicus showed that the juvenile shrimp were re-infected by co-cultured Chlorella sp., although the juvenile M. japonicus carried so small an amount of WSSV that it could only be detected by nested-PCR. The results of this experiment suggest that microalgae might be one possible horizontal transmission pathway for WSSV. Further research, however, is required to better understand the factors behind the different carrying abilities and virus-carrying mechanisms of different microalgae. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc.
