In this article we present a mechanical pattern transfer process where a thermosetting polymer mold instead of a metal, dielectric, ceramic, or semiconductor master made by conventional lithography was used as the master to pattern thermoplastic polymers in hot embossing lithography. The thermosetting polymer mold was fabricated by a soft lithography strategy, microtransfer molding. For comparison, the thermosetting polymer mold and the silicon wafer master were both used to imprint the thermoplastic polymer, polymethylmethacrylate. Replication of the thermosetting polymer mold and the silicon wafer master was of the same quality. This indicates that the thermosetting polymer mold could be used for thermoplastic polymer patterning in hot embossing lithography with high fidelity.

The effects of the chain structure and the intramolecular interaction energy of an A/B copolymer on the miscibility of the binary blends of the copolymer and homopolymer C have been studied by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. In the system, the interactions between segments A, B and C are more repulsive than those between themselves. In order to study the effect of the chain structure of the A/B copolymer on the miscibility, the alternating, random and block copolymers were introduced in the simulations, respectively. The simulation results show that the miscibility of the binary blends strongly depends on the intramolecular interaction energy ((ε) over bar (AB)) between segments A and B within the A/B copolymers. The higher the repulsive interaction energy, the more miscible the A/B copolymer and homopolymer C are. For the diblock copolymer/homopolymer blends, they tend to form micro phase domains. However, the phase domains become so small that the blend can be considered as a homogeneous phase for the alternating copolymer/ homopolymer blends. Furthermore, the investigation of the average end-to-end distance ((h) over bar) in different systems indicates that the copolymer chains tend to coil with the decrease Of (ε) over bar (AB) whereas the (h) over bar of the homopolymer chains depends on the chain structure of the copolymers.

Poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA)/SiO2 hybrids with different compositions were prepared under different casting temperatures and pH values. Their morphology as investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that samples with different compositions have different morphologies. When the SiO2 content is lower, PEA is the continuous phase and SiO2 is the dispersed phase. At higher SiO2 content, the change in phase morphology takes place, nd PEA gradually dispersing in the form of latex particles in SiO2 matrix. Change in phase morphology depends mainly on the time the sol-gel transition occurs. At suitable casting temperature and pH value, PEA/SiO2 in 95/5 and 50/50 hybrids with even dispersion was obtained.

The different poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) /SiO2 hybrids were prepared through sol-gel method involving PMMA emulsion (emulsion method) and PMMA/THF solution (solution method). The samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that PMMA/SiO2 composites in nanoscale were prepared by emulsion method, and its size of phase heterogeneity was less than that of solution method. Meanwhile, the polymer emulsion as the reactive medium was more suitable for the formation of SiO2 network.

In this article, we report on an approach of using an emulsion polymerized polymer in preparing organic-inorganic nanocomposites through a sol-gel technique. By mixing a polymer emulsion with prehydrolyzed tetraethoxysilane transparent poly(butyl methacrylate)/SiO2, nanocomposites were prepared as shown by TEM. AFM, FTIR, and XPS results show that there is a strong interaction between polymer latex particles and the SiO2 network. Comparison of the emulsion method with a traditional solution method shows that nanocomposites can be prepared by both methods, but there is some difference in their morphology and properties.

Using poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) as the backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether as side chains, three kinds of comblike polymers of different side chain length were synthesized. The Li-salt complexes and their firms were prepared. The dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. It was found that the main chain was rigid and the side chain was flexible in this comblike polymer system. Based on the time-temperature equivalence principle, a master curve was constructed. By selecting T-alpha as reference temperature, Arrhenius plots of shift factor and iso-free-volume plots were attained. The values of WLF parameters C-1 and C-2 increase with increasing salt concentration. By reference to T-0 = 50 degrees C, the relation between the average relaxation time 1g tau(c) and Li-salt concentration C is linear. The master curves are displaced progressively to higher frequencies as the M-w of side chains is increased. The relation between the average relaxation time 1g tau(n) and M-w of side chains is also linear. And the master curves are movable with the change of salts. It shows the effect of different kinds of salt on relaxation time.

The graft copolymerization of butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl alcohol) with eerie ammonium nitrate as redox initiator in a aqueous medium has been investigated. The formation of graft copolymer was confirmed by means of IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The percentage of mononer conversion and percentage of grafting varied with concentrations of initiator, nitric acid, monomer, macromolecular backbone (X-n = 1750, M = 80 000), reaction temperature and reaction time. Some inorganic salts and organic solvents have a great influence upon grafting. The reaction mechanism has been explored, and rate equations for the reaction are established. Using poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) as a backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEGME) with different molecular weights as side chains, three comb-like polymers and their Li salt complexes were synthesized. The dynamic mechanical properties and conductivities were investigated. Results showed that the polymer electrolytes possess two glass transitions: alpha -transition and beta -transition, and the temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity shows WLF (Williams-Landel-Ferry) behavior. Based on the time-temperature equivalence principle, a master curve was constructed by selecting T-beta as reference temperature. The values of the WLF parameters (C-1 and C-2) were obtained and were found to be almost independent of the length of the PEGME side chain and the content of Li salt. By reference to T-0 = 50 degreesC. the relation between log tau (c) and c was found to be linear. The master curves are displaced progressively to higher frequencies as the molecular weight of the side chain is increased. The relation between log tau (n) and the molecular weight of the side chain is also linear. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The fracture behavior of ABS materials with a particle diameter of 110 nm and of 330 nm was studied using instrumented Charpy impact tests. The effects of rubber content and temperature on fracture behavior, deformation mode, stable crack extension, plastic zone size, J-integral value, and crack opening displacement were investigated. In the case of a particle size of 110 nm, the material was found to break in a brittle manner, and the dominant crack mechanism was unstable crack propagation. Fracture toughness increases with increasing rubber content. In the case of a particle size of 330 nm, brittle-to-tough transition was observed. The J-integral value first increases with rubber content, then levels off after the rubber content is greater than 16 wt %. The J-integral value of a particle diameter of 330 nm was found to be much greater than that of 110 nm. The J-integral value of both series first increased with increasing temperature until reaching the maximum value, after which it decreased with further increasing temperature. The conclusion is that a particle diameter of 330 nm is more efficient than that of 110 nm in toughening, but for both series the effectiveness of rubber modification decreases with increasing temperatures higher than 40 degreesC because of intrinsic craze formation in the SAN matrix at temperatures near the glass transition of SAN. By mechanism-transformation (anionic --> cationic) poly(styrene-6-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, PS-b-PEOx, was synthesized in two steps. The first step is the polymerization of styrene block capped with ethylene oxide and its tosylation; the second step is the cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline. The products were thoroughly characterized by various methods, such as H-1-NMR, IR, DMA, TEM and SAXS. The results show that the copolymer obtained possesses high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution.

Compatibilization of blends of Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and LLDPE-copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 4-vinylpyridine (poly(MMA-co-4VP) with poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) have been studied. Mechanical properties of the LLDPE-PMMA blends increase upon addition of EMAA. In order to further improve interfacial adhesion of LLDPE and PMMA, 4-vinyl pyridine units are introduced into PMMA chains, or poly(MMA-co-4VP) is used as the polar polymer. In LLDPE-poly(MMA-co-4VP)-EMAA blends, interaction of MAA in EMAA with 4VP of poly(MMA-co-4VP) causes a band shift in the infrared (IR) spectra. Chemical shifts of N-1s binding energy in X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) experiments indicate a transfer of proton from MAA to 4VP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures show that the morphology of the blends were improved upon addition of EMAA. Nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) fluorescence results attest that there exists interdiffusion of chromophore-labeled LLDPE chains and chromophore-labeled poly(MMA-co-4VP) chains in the interface. Based on experimental results, the mechanism of compatibilization is studied in detail. Compatibilization is realized through the interaction between MAA in EMAA with 4VP in poly(MMA-co-4VP). Blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) compatibilized by poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) (P(S-b-MMA)) ale studied by FT-IR, DSC, excimer fluorescence spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In FT-IR measurement the ratio of absorption intensity at 1107 cm(-1) to that at 1085 cm(-1) (I-1107/I-1085) reaches a minimum at about 10wt% block copolymer content. DSC results show that the glass transition temperature of PVME in the blends has a maximum at 10 wt% copolymer content. In plots of the ratio of excimer-to-monomer fluorescence emission intensities (I-E/I-M) VS block copolymer content, I-E/I-M increases rapidly above 10%. Ail these phenomena show that PS block chains penetrate into PVME: domains on addition of block copolymer. Above 10% copolymer content, block copolymer chains tend to form micelles in bulk phase.

Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide) (PSAm)-titanium complexes (PSAm . Ti) were prepared and characterized. It is found that the coordination number of acrylamide (Am) to Ti in the complexes is strongly dependent on Am content in PSAm, but not on [Am]/[Ti] ratio in the feed. The infrared and x-ray photoelectron spectra suggest that the polymer-supported complexes possess the structure [GRAPHICS] The catalytic behavior of the complexes in styrene polymerization is described. The catalytic activity is markedly affected by [Al]/[Ti] ratio in the complexes. C-13 NMR, IR, and DSC data indicate that the polystyrene obtained with PSAm . Ti/MAO (MAO = methylaluminoxane) is highly syndiotactic. Use of Et(3)Al and i-Bu(3)Al in place of MAO gives atactic polystyrene. The activities of the various aluminum compounds used as the cocatalysts decrease in the order: MAO > Et(3)Al > i-Bu(3)Al. The polymer-supported complexes show relatively high activity even after the complexes had been exposed to air for 19 h or higher polymerization temperature. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The polymers containing different ligand groups of atoms (mainly O, N, and S) and their rare earth complexes were prepared, characterized and classified based on the type of metal-ligand tending. The catalytic activities of the complexes are briefly discussed. The polymer-supported rare earth complexes showed much greater activities than the corresponding complexes with a low molecular weight.
