2,2',3,3'-Oxydiphthalic dianhydride (2,2',3,3'-ODPA) and 2,3,3',4'-ODPA were synthesized from 3-chlorophthalic anhydride with 2,3-xylenol and 3,4-xylenol, respectively. Their structures were determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A series of polyimides derived from isomeric ODPAs with several diamines were prepared in dimethylacetamide (DMAc) with the conventional two-step method. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight spectra showed that the polymerization of 2,2',3,3'-ODPA with 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) has a greater trend to form cyclic oligomers than that of 2,3,3',4'-ODPA. Both 2,2',3,3'-ODPA and 2,3,3',4'-ODPA based polyimides have good solubility in polar aprotic solvents such as DMAc, dimethylformamide, and N-methylpyrrolidone. The 5% weight-loss temperatures of all polyimides were obtained near 500 degreesC in air. Their glass-transition temperatures measured by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis or differential scanning calorimetry decreased according to the order of polyimides on the basis of 2,2',3,3'-ODPA, 2,3,3',4'-ODPA, and 3,3',4,4'-ODPA. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction of all polyimide films from isomeric ODPAs and ODA showed some certain extent of crystallization after stretching. Rheological properties revealed that polyimide (2,3,3',4'-ODPA/ODA) has a comparatively lower melt viscosity than its isomers, which indicated its better melt processability.

A series of homopolyimides and copolyimides was synthesized by the solution condensation of biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) isomers and various diamines followed by chemical imidization. These polyimides had intermediate to high molecular weights with inherent viscosities of 0.34-1.01 dL/g for homopolyimides and 0.48-1.02 dL/g for copolyimides. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the aromatic polyimides were stable up to 500degreesC, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 506-597degreesC in an air atmosphere and in the range of 517-601degreesC in a nitrogen atmosphere, depending on the diamines used. The glass transition temperatures of aromatic homopolyimides were above 271degreesC, while the glass transition temperatures of the copolyimides increased with an increase in the 2, 2', 3, 3'-BPDA-component. The effects of the chemical structure of the polymer chain on the solubility were investigated. It was found that the solubility of BPDA-based polyimides could be improved by the introduction of flexible units, nonlinear and non-coplanar units, and copolymerization. The polyimides with nonlinear and non-coplanar units derived from 2, 2', 3, 3'-BPDA appeared to have prominently enhanced solubility in polar aprotic solvents and polychlorocarbons when compared with the homopolyimide derived from 3, 3', 4, 4'-BPDA.

Matrix effects arising from ethanol, propanol, glycerol, acetic acid, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry have been studied. Addition of ethanol, propanol, glycerol, acetic acid, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into solution has an enhancement effect on the signal intensity of analyte with ionization potential between 9 and 11 eV. The ethylenediamine and triethanolamine have higher enhancement effect on the signal intensity of Hg than that of ethanol, propanol, glycerol and acetic acid. Addition of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into solution has a suppression effect on the signal intensity of Ph and Sr. The mechanism of the enhancement or suppression was investigated. The signal enhancement of Hg in the presence of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine is not caused by improved degree of ionization of Hg and nebulization efficiency. The suppression effects of Ph and Sr in the presence of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine are due to decrease of atomization efficiency of these elements. A method for the determination of Hg in the biological standard samples Ly ICP-MS was developed.

The cyclization of cis-1,4 polybutadiene in various solvents (mesitylene,xylene, toluene,benzene and cyclohexane) with the catalyst composed of CH2=CHCH2Cl-AlEt2Cl was studied. The infrared spectra of the cyclized products were investigated. It was shown that the products produced in cyclohexane and mesitylene have infrared spectra identical with those of the original cis-1,4-polybutadiene and the products obtained in other aromatics have infrared spectra different from each other and distinguishing with those of the parent cis-1,4 polybutadiene. The analyses of infrared spectra came to the conclusion that the molecules of aromatic solvent participate in cyclization of cis-1,4 polybutadiene at the given condition. A possible reaction scheme involving an electrophilic substitution of carbonium ions for Ar-H of aromatic solvents was proposed. Some experimental facts were explained with great satisfaction on the basis of the above mechanism.

4-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride, prepared from 4-chlorophthalic anhydride, was reacted with trimellitic anhydride monoacid chloride or arylene diacid chloride to give aromatic ester-containing dianhydrides (EDAs). These dianhydrides were characterized by element analysis, melt point, FTIR and H-1-NMR. A series of aromatic poly (amic ester acid)s was synthesized by polycondensation of these EDAs and various diamines in polar organic solvent. The inherent viscosity of poly (amic ester acid)s ranged from 0.55 to 0.89 dL/g, indicating the intermediate to higher molecular weight. Polyesterimides having glass transition temperatures between 184-219degreesC were produced by thermal imidization of corresponding poly (amic ester acid)s. These polymers were fairly resistant to organic solvent, but some of them were soluble in phenol solvents. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed that these polyesterimides were stable up to 400degreesC, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 432-483degreesC in air atmosphers and 451-490degreesC in nitrogen.

A new kind of monomers including aromatic spirodilactone-5, 5'-carboxy-7,7'-dioxo-2,2'-spirobi(benzo-[c]tetrahydrofuran) is synthesized from m-xylene and paraformaldehyde. It is converted to a series of polyamides and polyesters by means of low-temperature solution polycondensation and interfacial polycondensation. NMR and IR spectra, solubility, mechanical and thermal properties of all these polymers are investigated. The polymers have high glass transition temperatures and good thermal oxidative properties. All polyamides have high viscosity and good solubility in strong polar organic solvents such as DMSO, DMAc, DMF and NMP. All polyamides can be cast into transparent, flexible and tough films possessing good tensile properties.

Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) were prepared from newly synthesized 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzamido)-1,1'-binaphyl dianhydride ((+/-)-, (S)-, and (R)-BNDADA). PAIs based on dianhydride monomers with different ee % were investigated with respect to their structures and chiroptical properties. These polymers were highly soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, pyridine, etc., and showed high glas s transition temperatures of 287-290 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures of 450-465 degrees C in nitrogen. Optically active PAIs exhibited high specific rotations, excellent optical stabilities, and a dependence of optical activities on temperature. Investigations on chiroptical properties indicated that chiral conformation was possessed by optically active PAIs. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

2,2,'3,3' -Biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2,'3,3'-BPDA) was prepared by a coupling reaction of dimethyl 3-iodophthalate. The X-ray single-crystal structure determination showed that this dianhydride had a bent and noncopolanar structure, presenting a striking contrast to its isomer, 3,3,'4,4'-BPDA. This dianhydride was reacted with aromatic diamines in a polar aprotic solvent such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) to form polyamic acid intermediates, which imidized chemically to polyimides with inherent viscosities of 0.34-0.55 dL/g, depending on the diamine used. The polyimides from 2,2,'3,3'-BPDA exhibited a good solubility and were dissolved in polar aprotic solvents and polychlorocarbons. These polyimides have high glass transition temperatures above 283 degrees C. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that these polyimides were fairly stable up to 500 degrees C, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 534-583 degrees C in nitrogen atmosphere and 537-561 degrees C in air atmosphere. Compatibilization of blends of Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and LLDPE-copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 4-vinylpyridine (poly(MMA-co-4VP) with poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) have been studied. Mechanical properties of the LLDPE-PMMA blends increase upon addition of EMAA. In order to further improve interfacial adhesion of LLDPE and PMMA, 4-vinyl pyridine units are introduced into PMMA chains, or poly(MMA-co-4VP) is used as the polar polymer. In LLDPE-poly(MMA-co-4VP)-EMAA blends, interaction of MAA in EMAA with 4VP of poly(MMA-co-4VP) causes a band shift in the infrared (IR) spectra. Chemical shifts of N-1s binding energy in X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) experiments indicate a transfer of proton from MAA to 4VP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures show that the morphology of the blends were improved upon addition of EMAA. Nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) fluorescence results attest that there exists interdiffusion of chromophore-labeled LLDPE chains and chromophore-labeled poly(MMA-co-4VP) chains in the interface. Based on experimental results, the mechanism of compatibilization is studied in detail. Compatibilization is realized through the interaction between MAA in EMAA with 4VP in poly(MMA-co-4VP). Polyaniline (PAn) with different molecular weight was prepared by adding organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol or THF into the polymerization mixture. Open-circuit potential measurements showed that the polymerization rate was lowered by the addition of the organic solvent Spectral studies showed that PAn intermediate before the oxidant was consumed was pernigraniline and it was reduced to emeraldine base rapidly by aniline in the termination period. A mechanism of chain propagation was proposed. Chain propagation and autoacceleration period were almost independent of addition of pernigraniline, and the autoacceleration of aniline polymerization is due to more rapid initiation rate. The traditional Soxhlet extraction of lanthanofullerenes was improved and the high temperature and high pressure method with different extraction solvents was used. It's found that La@C-2n can be efficiently extracted with toluene and pyridine from the insoluble part of the soot after the toluene Soxhlet extraction. Pyridine can more efficiently and selectively extract lanthofullerenes, especially La@C-82, while toluene can extract La@C-74, which is a new member added to the soluble species to lanthanofullerenes.

The diffusion coefficients(D-app) and the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants(k(s)) for ferrocene in several polymer solvents were determined by using steady-state voltammetry. The temperature dependence of the two parameters indicates Arrhenius behavior, The polymer solvent effects on diffusion and electron transfer dynamics of ferrocene were discussed.

A series of new optically active aromatic polyimides containing axially dissymmetric 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2-diyl units were prepared from optically pure (R)-(+)-or (S)-(-)-2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalene dianhydrides and various aromatic diamines via a conventional two-step procedure that included ring-opening polycondensation and chemical cyclodehydration. The optically pure isomer of dianhydride was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of optically pure (R)-(+)or (S)-(-)1,1'-bi-2-naphthol with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent and subsequent hydrolysis of the resultant tetranitrile derivatives, followed by the dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acids to obtain the dianhydrides. These polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and m-cresol, etc., and have glass transition temperatures of 251-296 degrees C, and 5% weight loss occurs not lower than 480 degrees C. The specific rotations of the optically active polyimides ranged from +196 degrees to +263 degrees, and the optical stability and chiroptical properties of them were also studied.
