Reduction of hydrogen peroxide at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with sigma-bonded pyrrole iron(III) octaethylporphyrin complex, (OEP)Fe(Pyr), was studied by cyclic voltammetry and a rotating disk electrode. In 0.1N NaOH solution, it is shown that such an (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC electrode has a significant catalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide reduction (E(D) = -0.80 V, k = 0.066 cm s(-1)); however, the electrode stability is low. The deactivation is observed when the reaction charge (Q) is passing through the (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC disk electrode. A linear rotation scan method is applied to study the kinetic process by determining the disk electrochemical response (i(D)) to rotation rate (omega) at a definite disk potential (E(D)). Considering that the number of adsorbed electroreduced catalyst molecules (Red) varies according to the disk potential, a factor theta(= Gamma(Red)/(Gamma(Red) + Gamma(Ox))) is introduced to describe the electrode surface area fraction for electroreduced species. The obtained Koutecky-Levich equation is applicable whatever the potential is.

Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) prepared by the dispersion of metal oxide particles on a glassy carbon (GC) substrate greatly enhance the voltammetric response and amperometric detection of local anesthetics following liquid chromatography (LC). The enhancement is more pronounced with the GC electrodes dispersed by the metal oxides of higher oxidation states (+3, +4) and for the species exhibiting relatively slow electrode kinetics under given conditions. With an applied potential of 1.2 V (vs. SCE), LC amperometric detection of the analytes at the alpha-alumina modified GC surface gives detection limits 2-5 times lower than those obtained at the bare electrode. The metal oxide-dispersed electrodes display significant improvement in sensitivity, and selectivity and indicate excellent preparation reproducibility and performance stability.

Anionic colloid cupric hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) was incorporated into polypyrrole (PPy) films in the course of electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole from aqueous solution containing pyrrole and CuHCF colloid. The films obtained were dark brown in color. Three redox peaks appeared in the cyclic voltammogram (CV). The peaks around 0.7 V (vs, SCE) showed cation-selective properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopic properties of the film were investigated.

A rapid rotation-scan method was used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of H2O2 at a cobalt protoporphyrin modified pyrolytic graphite electrode (CoPP/PG). The rate constant of H2O2 oxidation at the CoPP/PG electrode at different potentials and in different pH solutions was measured. The variation of catalytic activity with reaction charges (Q) passed through the electrode was analyzed. This provided a convenient electrochemical method to study the passivation and poisoning of catalytic sites with time.

Results from previous electrochemical studies have indicated that 2,2'-bipyridine and pyrazine do not function as promoters for heterogeneous electron transfer between cytochrome c and metal electrodes. Their lack of activity was attributed to the improper positioning of the two functional groups in 2,2'-bipyridine and the inefficient length of pyrazine. In the present study it was determined that both 2,2'-bipyridine and pyrazine act as promoters when self-absorbed over a sufficiently long dipping time or at roughened electrodes. The promoter characteristics of these two molecules were studied and compared with those of 4,4'-bipyridine. The difference in their promoter behavior appears to result primarily from their different strengths of adsorption and not because electrodes modified with 2,2'-bipyridine or pyrazine are unsuitable for accelerating direct electron transfer reactions in cytochrome c. These results have implications regarding the mechanism(s) of promoter effects in electrochemical reactions of cytochrome c.

The preparation and the behaviour of a Prussian Blue (PB) film on a platinum microdisk electrode has been described. Electrocatalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid has occurred at the PB film modified microelectrode. This shows a typical example of a modified microelectrode in electrocatalysis following our previous theoretical studies (J. Electroanal. Chem., 309 (1991) 103) and the related catalytic reaction rate constant was determined.

The hydrogenation of alkali metals using lanthanide trichloride and naphthalene as catalyst has been studied. LnCl3(Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Dy, Yb) and naphthalene can catalyze the hydrogenation of sodium under atmospheric pressure and 40-degrees-C to form sodium hydride. The activities of lanthanide trichlorides are in the following order: LaCl3 > NdCl3 > SmCl3 > DyCl3 > YbCl3. Although lithium proceeds in the same catalytic reaction, the kinetic curve of the lithium hydrogenation is different from that of sodium. Lanthanide trichlorides display no catalytic effect on the hydrogenation of potassium in presence of naphthalene. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied and it is suggested that the anion-radical of alkali metal naphthalene complexes may be the intermediate for the hydrogenation of alkali metals and the function of LnCl3 is to catalyze the hydrogenation of the intermediate. The products are porous solids with high specific surface area (83 m2/g for NaH) and pyrophoric in air. They are far more active than the commercial alkali metal hydrides. The combination of these hydrides with some transition metal complexes exhibits high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of olefins.

Microstructure of the glassy carbon surface modified with iron tetraphenyfporphyrin (FeTPP) by heat treatment has been studied by XPS,, DTA and TG. XPS spectra of Fe 2P_3\2 level in FeTPP and iron tetraphenylporphyriu/glassy carbon (FeTPP/GC) have shown that a bond can be formed between the glassy carbon surface and both the central metal iron ion and the macrocyclic, ligand, which loses its four phenyl groups during the beat treatment. The relationship between the surface mierostructure of FeTPP/GC and the...
