The electronic properties of wide-energy gap zinc-blende structure GaN, A1N, and their alloys Ga(1-x)A1(x)N are investigated using the empirical pseudopotential method. Electron and hole effective mass parameters, hydrostatic and shear deformation potential constants of the valence band at Gamma and those of the conduction band at Gamma and X are obtained for GaN and AIN, respectively. The energies of Gamma, X, L conduction valleys of Ga(1-x)A1(x)N alloy versus Al fraction x are also calculated. The information will be useful for the design of lattice mismatched heterostructure optoelectronic devices based on these materials in the blue light range application. We describe a first-principles-based strategy to predict the macroscopic toughness of a gamma-Ni(Al)/alpha-Al2O3 interface. Density functional theory calculations are used to ascertain energy changes upon displacing the two materials adjacent to the interface, with relaxation conducted over all atoms located within adjoining rows. Traction/displacernent curves are obtained from derivatives of the energy. Calculations are performed in mode I (opening), mode II (shear) and at a phase angle of 45 degrees. The shear calculations are conducted for displacements along < 110 > and < 112 > of the Ni lattice. A generalized interface potential function is used to characterize the results. Initial fitting to both the shear and normal stress results is required to calibrate the unknowns. Thereafter, consistency is established by using the potential to predict other traction quantities. The potential is incorporated as a traction/displacement function within a cohesive zone model and used to predict the steady-state toughness of the interface. For this purpose, the plasticity of the Ni alloy must be known, including the plasticity length scale. Measurements obtained for a gamma-Ni superalloy are used and the toughness predicted over the full range of mode mixity. Additional results for a range of alloys are used to demonstrate the influences of yield strength and length scale.

Using electrochemical deposition, Cu nanowire arrays have been successfully fabricated by home-made polycarbonate ion-track templates. The diameters were well controlled by etching time of templates. The minimum diameter is 15 nm. The morphologies and structures were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The wires prefer [1 1 0] growth direction due to H ions absorption. The optical properties of Cu nanowire arrays are studied by an ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared spectrophotometer. Two extinction peaks were observed in spectra. The optical mechanism is discussed based on surface plasmon resonance

The Cu-Zr amorphous alloy was studied as an electrocatalyst towards the electrochemical hydrogenation of nitrobenzene. The electrocatalyst was activated by chemical etching in HF solution. Resulted changes in the morphology, chemical composition and crystalline structure of the electrocatalyst surface were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic properties of the Cu-Zr amorphous alloy were assessed by voltammetric measurements. Due to the formation and aggregation of Zr residue modified Cu nanocrystals on the surface caused by the selective dissolution of Zr components in the chemical etching, the activated amorphous alloy is an effective electrocatalyst for the electrochemical reduction reaction of nitrobenzene with aniline as the main product. The positive shift of the peak potential and accompanying increase in the value of peak current in voltammograms with increasing Cu content and decreasing Zr content of the alloy surface in the chemical etching are indicative of improved electrocatalytic activity. The microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-6Zn-5Al-4Gd-1RE (RE = Ce or Y) alloys were investigated. The addition of Ce or Y obviously refines the grain size for the Mg-6Zn-5Al-4Gd-based alloy, while the Y element has a better refining effect. The Ce and Y show different grain-refining mechanisms: Ce addition mostly promotes the growth of secondary dendrite, while Y addition mainly increases the heterogeneous nucleation sites.

Ti-based icosahedral quasicrystalline phase (I-phase) exhibited excellent hydrogen storage property for special structure. Unfortunately, the application as the negative electrode material of the nickel-metal hydride batteries was limited due to the poor electrochemical kinetics. Meanwhile, rare-earth element was beneficial to the electrochemical properties of Ti, Zr-based alloy.

The structure and electrochemical characteristics of melted composite Ti0.10Zr0.15V0.35Cr0.10Ni0.30+x% LaNi5 (x=0, 1, 5 and 10) hydrogen storage alloys have been investigated systematically. XRD shows that the matrix phase structure of V-based solid solution phase with a BCC structure and C14 Laves phase with hexagonal structure is not changed after adding LaNi5 alloy. However, the amount of the secondary phase increases with increasing LaNi5 content. Field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS) shows that the C14 Laves phase contains more Zr and the white lard phase has a composition close to (Zr, Ti)(V, Cr, Ni, La)(2).

Microstructures and electrochemical properties of Ti0.26Zr0.07V0.21Mn0.1Ni0.33Mox (x=0,0.025,0.05,0.075, 0.10) electrode alloys have been investigated. The results of XRD analysis show that the alloys are mainly composed of V-based solid solution phase with body centered cubic (bcc) structure and C14 Laves phase with hexagonal structure. The addition of Mo element can imp ove the activation characteristics, maximum discharge capacity and cyclic durability for the electrode alloys

Die-cast Mg-4Al-0.4Mn-xNd(x = 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 wt.%) magnesium alloys were prepared successfully and influences of Nd on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of the Mg-4Al-0.4Mn alloy have been investigated. The results showed that with the addition of Nd binary Al2Nd phase and Al11Nd3 phase. which mainly aggregated along the grain boundaries, were formed, and the relative ratio of above two phases was in correlation with the Nd content in the alloy. Meanwhile, the grain sizes were greatly reduced with the increasing Nd content. It was found that due to the addition of Nd both the tensile properties and corrosion resistance were improved substantially.

The Mg-8Gd-2Y-1Nd-0.3Zn-0.6Zr (wt.%) alloy sheet was prepared by hot extrusion technique, and the structure and mechanical properties of the extruded alloy were investigated. The results show that the alloy in different states is mainly composed of alpha-Mg solid solution and secondary phases of Mg5RE and Mg24RE5 (RE = Gd, Y and Nd). At aging temperatures from 200 degrees C to 300 degrees C the alloy exhibits obvious age-hardening response. Great improvement of mechanical properties is observed in the peak-aged state alloy (aged at 200 degrees C for 60 h), the ultimate tensile strength (sigma(b)), tensile yield strength (sigma(0.2)) and elongation (epsilon) are 376 MPa, 270 MPa and 14.2% at room temperature (RT), and 206 MPa. 153 MPa and 25.4% at 300 degrees C, respectively, the alloy exhibits high thermal stability.
