The activities of perovskites depend on compositions and preparation methods. Various perovskites, La1-xMxMnO3 (M=Ag, Sr, Ce, La), have been prepared by two different methods (co-precipitation and spray decomposition). The new preparation method, spray decomposition, produced perovskites of a high surface area of over 10 m(2)/g. The catalytic activities for CH4 and CO oxidation have been studied on a series of catalysts, La1-xMxMnO3. The perovskite-type oxide, La0.7Ag0.3MnO3, shows the highest catalytic activity: the complete conversion of CO and CH4 at 370 and 825 K, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Two mixed oxide systems La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda(0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) and La2+xThxCuO4+/-lambda(0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4) with K2NiF4 structure were prepared by varying re values; Their crystal structures were studied by means of XRD and IR spectra. The average valence of Cu ion at B site, nonstoichiometric oxygen (A) and the chemical composition in the bulk and on the surface of the catalysts were measured by means of chemical analysis and XPS. The catalytic behavior in reaction CO + NO was investigated under the regular change of average valence of Cu ion at B site and nonstoichiometric oxygen (lambda). Meanwhile, the adsorption and activation of the small molecules NO and the mixture of NO + CO over the mixed oxide catalysts were studied by means of MS-TPD. The catalytic mechanism of reaction NO + CO over these oxide catalysts were proposed; and it has been found that, at lower temperatures the activation of NO is the rate determining step and the catalytic activity is related to the lower valent metallic ion and its concentration, while at higher temperatures the adsorption of NO is the rate determining step and the catalytic activity is related to the oxygen vacancy and its concentration.

A series of Sr2+ doped perovskite like oxides La2-xSrxCuO4-lambda (x = 0 similar to 1) were prepared, the structure, lattice parameters, content of Cu3+, oxygen vacancies created by Sr2+ substitution and composition of these complex oxides were studied by XRD and iodic titration method. The redox ability, active oxygen species and surface image were evaluated and analyzed with TPD, TG, XPS and SEM measurements. The catalytic activity for ammonia oxidation over these oxides was tested, and the relationship among the catalytic properties, structure, nonstoichiometric oxygen, redox ability and surface behavior were correlated and some information on the mechanism of ammonia oxidation was obtained.

Supported catalysts, consisting of SiW12 immobilized on hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) and its aluminum-substituted derivative (MCM-41) with different loadings and calcination temperatures, have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. It is shown that SiW12 retains the Keggin structure on the mesoporous molecular sieves and no HPA crystal phase is developed, even at SiW12 loadings as high as 50 wt%. In the esterification of acetic acid by n-butanol, supported catalysts exhibit a higher catalytic activity and stability and held some promise of practical application. In addition, experimental results indicate that the loaded amount of SiW12 and the calcination temperatures have a significant influence on the catalytic activity, and the existence of aluminum has also an effect on the properties of supported catalysts.

Superconductor mixed oxides are often used as catalysts at high temperature in gas-solid phase oxidations and considered not suitable for lower temperature reactions in the liquid-solid phase; here the catalysis of La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda (x = 0, 0.1, 0.7, 1) mixed oxides in phenol hydroxylation at lower temperatures are studied, and we find that the value of x has a significant effect on catalytic activity: the lower its value, the higher the catalytic activity; a mechanism is proposed to explain the experimental phenomena.

A series of mixed oxides La2-xSrxCoO4+/-lambda (x=0-2) with varying x values was synthesized. The crystal structure of this series of mixed oxides was studied by using XRD. The result showed that when x=0.25-1.5 the mixed oxides possessing K2NiF4 structure are formed. The valences of the transition metal Co and the relation between +/-lambda content and x value by using chemical analysis method have been measured, too. The redox property of this series of mixed oxides and different kinds of oxygen species were studied by IR, TPD, TPR, XPS and SEM methods. The catalytic activity in the complete oxidation of CO and CH4 was investigated and the relationships between the activity, composition and structure of the mixed oxides have been elucidated.

Three new bimetallic complexes were synthesized and crystalized by reactions of (CF3CO2)(3)Ln With R(1) AlR(2)(Ln=Nd and Y, R(1)=H, R=i-C4H9; Ln=Eu, R=R(1)=C2H5) in tetrahydrofuran solution, and their crystal structures were determined using a X-ray diffraction method. The structures and the questions on valence state and noncoplanarity in the structures were confirmed and cracked by means of H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectra, especially by C-13-H-1 COSY 2D NMR technique. A general formula of molecules of the three rare earth complexes was defined as follows: [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Ln(mu-CF3CHO2)AlR(2) . 2THF](2) A mechanism on the formation of the new complexes was also proposed through the following five steps: alkylating, beta-elimination (or hydrogenation), hydrogen transfer, linkage and association. Both Y-Al and Eu-Al complexes function as a catalyst in polymerization of MMA and ECH. The polymer obtained from the first monomer is mainly syndiotactic chain structure and the polymerization of the last monomer shows higher catalytic activity. The Y-Al complex also capable of ring-opening polymerization of THF in case of adding-vary small amount of ECH and a oxonium ion mechanism of THF polymerization was suggested from the analysis of THF polymer terminal.

The type of oxygen species in perovskite-type oxides LaMnyCo1-yO3 (y = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0) has been studied by means of XRD, XPS and TPD. The catalytic activity in ammonia oxidation was also investigated. It was found that there were three desorption peaks in TPD curve corresponding to three types of oxygen species (alpha, beta, beta'). The desorption temperatures were 293 K less-than-or-equal-to T(alpha) less-than-or-equal-to 773 K, 773 K less-than-or-equal-to T(beta) less-than-or-equal-to K and T(beta') greater-than-or-equal-to 1073 K respectively. The relationship among the composition, structure and the catalytic property of.the catalyst was correlated and could be explainned with a model based on solid defect reaction and the interaction between Co and Mn ions. The adsorption strength and quantity of a oxygen are proportional to the catalytic activity. The, result indicates that the synergetic effect between B-site ions seems to the benefit of the ammonis oxidation reaction.

The electrocatalytic reduction of 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane with CoTPP in DMF solutions containing 0.1 M TBAP was investigated at a Pt ultramicroelectrode. The experimental results indicated that CoTPP obviously exhibited catalytic activity for 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane. The rate constants of 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane in this system were calculated to be 0.14 x 10(3) and 0.5 x 10(2) M-1 S-1, respectively. The reaction mechanism of 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane reduction electrocatalysed by CoTPP in 0.1 M TBAP DMF solution is discussed.

The specific activity concentrations of radionuclides U-238, Th-212, and K-40 of 2300 sampling points in the Qingdao area were measured by an FD-3022 gamma-ray spectrometer. The radioactivity concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 ranged from 3.3 to 185.3, from 6.9 to 157.2, and from 15.8 to 7834.4 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The air-absorbed dose at I meter above ground, effective annual dose, external hazard index, and radium equivalent activity were also calculated to systematically evaluate the radiological hazards of the natural radioactivity in Qingdao. The air-absorbed dose, effective annual dose, external hazard index, and radium equivalent activity in the study area were 98.6 nGy h(-1), 0.12 mSv, 0.56, 197 Bq kg(-1), respectively. Compared with the worldwide value, the air-absorbed dose is slightly high, but the other factors are all lower than the recommended value. The natural external exposure will not pose significant radiological threat to the population. In conclusion, the Qingdao area is safe with regard to the radiological level and suitable for living.

The catalytic performance of Ir-based catalysts was investigated for the reduction of NO under lean-burn conditions over binderless Ir/ZSM-5 monoliths, which were prepared by a vapor phase transport (VPT) technique. The catalytic activity was found to be dependent not only on the Ir content, but also on the ZSM-5 loading of the monolith. With the decreasing of the Ir content or the increasing of the ZSM-5 loading of the monolith, NO conversion increased. When the ZSM-5 loading on the cordierite monolith was raised up to ca. 11% and the metal Ir content was about 5 g/l, the NO conversion reached its maximum value of 73% at 533 K and SV of 20 000 h(-1). Furthermore, both the presence of 10% water vapor in the feed gas and the variation of space velocity of the reaction gases have little effect on the NO conversion. A comparative test between Ir/ZSM-5 and Cu/ZSM-5, as well as the variation of the feed gas compositions, revealed that Ir/ZSM-5 is very active for the reduction of NO by CO under lean conditions, although it is a poor catalyst for the C3H8-SCR process. This unique property of Ir/ZSM-5 makes it superior to the traditional three-way catalyst (TWC) for NO reduction under lean conditions. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The catalytic performance of silver-modified ZSM-5 catalysts in the selectively catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with methane was investigated. NO was selectively reduced by CH4 to N-2 in the presence of excess O-2, and the catalytic activity depended on both the activation of CH4 and the adsorption properties of NOx. Silver incorporated in ZSM-5 zeolite activated CH4 at low temperatures and lowered the "light-off" temperature for the CH4-SCR of NOx. Temperature-programmed (TP) spectroscopy studies depicted that surface nitrosyl species directly decomposed to N-2 in the absence of O-2. CH4 could not effectively reduce surface nitrosyl species, but might facilitate the direct decomposition of NO through the removal of surface oxygen. Surface nitrates were formed in NO and O-2 coexisting system and could be effectively reduced by CR4 to nitrogen. The priority of surface nitrates to O-2 in the reaction with CH4 clearly demonstrated that CH4 selectively and preferentially reduced the surface nitrate species to N-2 in the excess of oxygen. The addition of a suitable amount of PPh3 to PdCl2 or PdCl2(PhCN)(2) in situ can considerably increase the catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, while the catalytic activities of PdCl2 (reduced)+PPh3, PdCl2(PPh3)(2) and Pd(PPh3)(4) are very poor. The poisoning of catalyst by mercury indicates that the catalytically active species are composed of Pd(0) colloidal particles. Transmission electron micrographs show that the size of nanometric Pd(0) particles of PdCl2 with PPh3 added in situ is smaller than that of PhCl2(PPh3) or PdCl2 (reduced)+PPh3. A synergic effect of bimetallic catalysts such as PdCl2+nPPh(3)+NiCl2 (n= 0.5, 1) and PdCl2(PhCN)(2)+PPh3+FeCl3 gives rise to a further increase in the catalytic activity.

Total oxidation of chlorinated aromatics on supported manganese oxide catalysts was investigated. The catalysts have been prepared by wet impregnation method and characterized by XRD and TPR. Among the catalysts with the supports of TiO(2), Al(2)O(3) and SiO(2), titania supported catalyst (MnO(x)/TiO(2)) gives the highest catalytic activity. MnO(x)/TiO(2) (Mn loading, 1.9 wt.%) shows the total oxidation of chlorobenzene at about 400 degreesC. The activity can be stable for over 82 h except for the first few hours. At lower Mn loadings for MnO(x)/TiO(2), only one reduction peak appears at about 400 degreesC due to the highly dispersed manganese oxide. With the increase of Mn loading, another reduction peak emerges at about 500 degreesC, which is close to the reduction peak of bulk Mn(2)O(3) at 520 degreesC. TPR of the used catalyst is totally different from that of the fresh one indicating that the chemical state of the active species is changed during the chlorobenzene oxidation. The characterization studies of MnO(x)/TiO(2) showed that the highly dispersed MnO(x) is the precursor of the active phase, which can be converted into the active phase, mainly oxychlorinated manganese (MnO(y)Cl(z)), under working conditions of chlorobenzene oxidation. Silica-supported Rh catalysts with different Rh particle dimensions were investigated for CO hydrogenation. The catalysts were characterized by various techniques such as TEM, H-2-TPR and N-2 adsorption to study the catalyst morphology, the size distributions of Rh particles and the silica pores. It was found that the distribution and the size of Rh particles were affected by the silica pores, and the metal grains were enclosed in the pores of the support, and thereby their growth was limited. The catalytic activity and selectivity to C-2-oxygenates for CO hydrogenation were found to be significantly controlled by the Rh particle sizes, and the higher activity and selectivity to C2-oxygenates were obtained over bigger Rh particles, within the range of the reported particle sizes.
