Reaction of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic with CoCl2 . 6H(2)O in aqueous solution give rise to a three-dimensional Complex CO2(2,6-DPC)(2)Co(H2O)(5).2H(2)O (DPC = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate) 1. It has been characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectra (IR) spectrum, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, EPR spectrum, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the P2(1)/c space group with a = 8.3906(3) Angstrom, b = 27.4005(8) Angstrom, c = 9.6192(4) A, alpha = 90.00degrees, beta = 98.327(2)degrees, gamma = 90.00degrees, V = 2188.20(14) Angstrom(3), Z = 4. There are two types of cobalt environments: Co(1) is coordinated by four oxygen atoms from four carboxyl groups and two nitrogen 2 atoms which are all from pdc(2). Co(2) is coordinated by six oxygen atoms, five from coordinated water molecules and one from a carboxyl of pdc(2) - of which the other oxygen atom is linked to the Co(1). The extensive intermolecular hydrogen bonds are formed in the crystal by means of the five coordinated water molecules.

A new method for synthesis of novel hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s from commercially available AA' and CBx type monomers has been developed on the basis of a series of model reactions. The hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s with multihydroxyl end groups are prepared by thermal polycondensation of carboxyl anhydrides (AA') and multihydroxyl primary amine (CBx) without any catalyst and solvent. The reaction mechanism in the initial stage of polymerization was investigated with in situ H-1 NMR. In the initial stage of the reaction, primary amino groups of 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol (AEPO) or tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (THAM) react rapidly with anhydride, forming an intermediate which can be considered as a new AB(x) type monomer. Further self-polycondensation reactions of the AB. molecules produce hyperbranched polymers. Analysis using H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy revealed the degree of branching of the resulting polymers ranging from 0.36 to 0.55. These hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s contain configurational isomers observed by C-13 and DEPT C-13 NMR spectroscopy, possess high molecular weights with broad distributions and display glass-transition temperatures (T(g)s) between 7 and 96 degreesC.

The title complex, [Sm-2(C6H13NO2)(4)(H2O)(8)](ClO4)(6), contains dimeric [Sm-2(Ile)(4)(H2O)(8)](6+) cations (Ile is L-isoleucine) and perchlorate anions. The two Sm3+ cations lie on a crystallographic twofold rotation axis. The four isoleucine molecules act as bridging ligands, linking two Sm3+ ions through their carboxyl O atoms. Each Sm3+ ion is also coordinated by four water molecules to complete eightfold coordination in a square antiprismatic fashion. One of the three perchlorate anions in the asymmetric unit is disordered.

A paclitaxel/MPEG-PLA block copolymer conjugate was prepared in three steps: (1) hydroxyl-terminated diblock copolymer of monomethoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactide) (MPEG-PLA) was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide using MPEG as a maroinitiator, (2) it was converted to carboxyl-terminated MPEG-PLA by reacting with mono-i-butyl ester of diglycolic acid and subsequent deprotecting the t-butyl group with TFA; (3) the latter was reacted with paclitaxel in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and dimethylaminopyridine. Structures of the polymers synthesized were confirmed by H-1 NMR, and their molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The antitumor activity of the conjugate against human liver cancer H7402 cells was evaluated by MTT method. The results showed that paclitaxel can be released from the conjugate without losing cytotoxicity.

A novel biodegradable amphiphilic block copolymer PLGG-PEG-PLGG bearing pendant glucose residues is successfully prepared by the coupling reaction of 3-(2-aminoethylthio) propyl-R-D-glucopyranoside with the pendant carboxyl groups of PLGG-PEG-PLGG in the presence of N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole. The polymer PLGG-PEG-PLGG, i.e., poly {(lactic acid)-co-[(glycolic acid)-alt-(L-glutamic acid)]}-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly{( lactic acid)-co-[( glycolic acid)-alt-(L-glutamic acid)]}, is prepared by ring-opening copolymerization of L-lactide (LLA) with (3s)-benzoxylcarbonylethylmorpholine-2,5-dione (BEMD) in the presence of dihydroxyl PEG with molecular weight of 2000 as macroinitiator and Sn(Oct)(2) as catalyst, and then by catalytic hydrogenation. The glucose-grafted copolymer shows a lower degree of cytotoxicity to ECV-304 cells and improved specific recognition and binding with Concanavalin A (Con A). Therefore, this kind of glucose-grafted copolymer may find biomedical applications.

Advances in tissue engineering require biofunctional scaffolds that can provide not only physical support for cells but also chemical and biological cues needed in forming functional tissues. To achieve this goal, a novel RGD peptide grafted poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(L-glutamic acid) (PEG-PLA-PGL/RGD) was synthesized in four steps (1) to prepare diblock copolymer PEG-PLA-OH and to convert its -OH end group into -NH2 (to obtain PEG-PLA-NH2), (2) to prepare triblock copolymer PEG-PLA-PBGL by ring-opening polymerization of NCA (N-carboxyanhydride) derived from benzyl glutamate with diblock copolymer PEG-PLA-NH2 as macroinitiator, (3) to remove the protective benzyl groups by catalytic hydrogenation of PEGPLA-PBGL to obtain PEG-PLA-PGL, and (4) to react RGD (arginine-glycine-(aspartic amide)) with the carboxyl groups of the PEG-PLA-PGL. The structures of PEG-PLA-PGL/RGD and its precursors were confirmed by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, amino acid analysis, and XPS analysis. Addition of 5 wt % PEG-PLA-PGL/RGD into a PLGA matrix significantly improved the surface wettability of the blend films and the adhesion and proliferation behavior of human chondrocytes and 3T3 cells on the blend films. Therefore, the novel RGD-grafted triblock copolymer is expected to find application in cell or tissue engineering.

The interaction mechanism between Eu3+ and microperoxidase-II (MP-11) in the aqueous solution was investigated using the UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. It was found that one Eu3+ ion can coordinate with two carboxyl oxygen of two propionic acid groups of the heme group in the MP-11 molecule, leading the increase in the nonplanarity of the porphyrin ring and exposure degree of Fe(III) in the heme group. Therefore, the reversibility of the electrochemical reaction and the electrocatalytic activity of MP-11 for the reduction of oxygen are increased.

Poly(ethylene-co-propylene) (EPR) was functionalized to varying degrees with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by melt grafting processes. The EPR-graft-GMA elastomers were used to toughen poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT). Results showed that the grafting degree strongly influenced the morphology and mechanical properties of PBT/EPR-graft-GMA blends. Compatibilization reactions between the carboxyl and/or hydroxyl of PBT and epoxy groups of EPR-graft-GMA induced smaller dispersed phase sizes and uniform dispersed phase distributions. However, higher degrees of grafting (>1.3) and dispersed phase contents (>10 wt%) led to higher viscosities and severe crosslinking reactions in PBT/EPR-graft-GMA blends, resulting in larger dispersed domains of PBT blends. Consistent with the change in morphology, the impact strength of the PBT blends increased with the increase in EPR-graft-GMA degrees of grafting for the same dispersion phase content when the degree of grafting was below 1.8. However, PBT/EPR-graft-GMA1.8 displayed much lower impact strength in the ductile region than a comparable PBT/EPR-graft-GMA1.3 blend (1.3 indicates degree of grafting).

The synthesis and characterization of hyperbranched aromatic poly(ester-imide)s are described. A variety of AB(2) monomers, N-[3- or 4-bis(4-acetoxyphenyl)toluoyl]-4-carboxyl-phthalimide and N-{3- or 4-[1,1-bis(4-acetooxyphenyl)]ethylphenyl}-4-carboxy phthalimides were prepared starting from condensation of nitrobenzaldehydes or nitroacetophenones with phenol and used for synthesis of hyperbranched poly(ester-imide)s containing terminal acetyl groups by transesterification reaction. These hyperbranched poly(ester-imide)s were produced with weight-average molecular weight of up to 6.87 g/mol. Analysis of H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy revealed the structure of the four hyperbranched poly(ester-imide)s. These hyperbranched poly(ester-imide)s exhibited excellent solubility in a variety of solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and tetrahydrofuran and showed glass-transition temperatures between 217 and 255 degreesC. The thermogravimetric analytic measurement revealed the decomposition temperature at 10% weight-loss temperature (T-d(10)) ranging from 365 to 416 degreesC in nitrogen.

Communication: Nanostructural hybrid organic-inorganic lanthanide complex films were prepared in situ by use of a novel sol-gel precursor containing pendant triethoxy-silyl and carboxyl groups (see Figure). The resulting transparent and crack-free films gave rise to strong red or green emission, even at low lanthanide ion concentration. Phase separation and lanthanide ion aggregation were controlled at the nanoscale.

In this paper, we studied the reactions of both potassium ferricyanide and hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride at a 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in different pH solutions. The surface of the modified electrode has carboxyl groups, the dissociation of which are strongly dependent upon the solution pH values. The rate constant kb of the oxidation of ferrocyanide on the modified electrode can be obtained by fitting the experimental tip current-distance (I-T-d) curves with the theoretical values. The surface pK(a) of the 4-ABA modified GCE was estimated from the plot of standard rate constant k(o) versus the solution pH and is equal to 3.2, which is in good agreement with the reported result. The SECM approach curves for Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) both on the bare and the modified electrodes show similar diffusion control processes. These results can be explained by the electrostatic interactions between the modified electrode surface and the model compounds with different charges. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BN. The complexes of a series of rare earths with Ge-132 have been prepared. The carboxyl anions of Ge-132 molecule were coordinated to rare earth ion with chelate style. In the complexes molecule, the GeO3/2 group of Ge-132 were hydrolyzed to become -Ge(OH)(3) group, and later does:not coordinate with rare earth ions. All of the complexes possess similar properties. In aqueous solution of pH 6 and 50 degrees C, these complexes can obviously selectively catalytically hydrolize the phosphatide bond of 5'-AMP and 5'-dAMP into phosphatic acid and riboside.

The complex, K2.5Na2NH4[Mo2O2S2(cit)(2)]. 5H(2)O (1), was obtained by crystallization from a solution of (NH4)(2)MoS4, potassium citrate (K(3)cit) and hydroxyl sodium in methanol and water under an atmosphere of pure nitrogen at ambient temperature. The crystals are triclinic, space group
, a = 7.376 (3)Angstrom, b = 14.620 (2) Angstrom, c = 14.661 (1) Angstrom, alpha = 71.10 (1)degrees, beta = 81.77 (1)degrees, gamma = 78.27(2)degrees, R = 0.0584 for 2545 observed (I > 2 sigma (I)) reflections. Single crystal structure analysis reveals that citrate ligand coordinated to molybdenum atom through two carboxylato oxygens and one deprotonated hydroxyl oxygen together with two bridging sulfur atoms and a terminal oxygen atom completes distorted coordination octahedron around each molybdenum atom. Principal dimensions are: Mo = O-t, 1.707 Angstrom (av); Mo-S-b, 2.341 Angstrom (av); Mo-O-(hydroxyl), 2.021 Angstrom (av); Mo-O(alpha-carboxyl), 2.1290 Angstrom (av) and Mo-O(beta-carboxyl), 2.268(av) Angstrom. IR spectrum is in agreement with the structure.

1:1 complexes of beta-cyclodextrin (CD) with three amino acids (Gly, Phe and Trp) have been detected as ions in the gas phase using infusion positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In contrast with the positive ion ESI mass spectra of simple aqueous solutions, the aggregates and adducts usually formed in the ESI process did not appear in the positive ion ESI spectra of solutions buffered with ammonium acetate (NH4Ac), even at higher analyte concentrations, These studies suggest that addition of buffer and/or use of a low analyte concentration should be used to overcome formation of aggregates and metal ion adducts in such mass spectrometry studies. Also, the deprotonated complexes are dissociated by collision induced dissociation (CID) to form an abundant product ion, the deprotonated CD, requiring transfer of a proton to the amino acid carboxyl group, To understand formation of complexes in the gas phase, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to separate free amino acids (AAs) from complexes in an incubated solution. The ESI mass spectra of the GPC fractions show the presence of 1:1 complexes of both CD-aromatic amino acids and CD-aliphatic amino acids. Compared with CD-aliphatic amino acid complexes, CD-aromatic amino acid complexes appear to be destabilized in the gas phase, possibly because the hydrophobic interaction which binds the aromatic group of amino acids in the CD cavity in solution may become repulsive when solvent evaporates from the droplets during the electrospray process, whereas those complex ions formed as proton bound dimers are stabilized by electrostatic forces, the major binding force for such complexes in the gas phase. In addition, the GPC technique coupled with off-line ESI-MS can rapidly separate CD complexes by size, and provides some information on the character of the complexes in solution. The protonation process of two DTPA bis(amide) derivatives, DTPA-BDMA and DTPA-BDEA, was studied by using H-1 NMR titration and MOPAC calculation. Their protonation process was proposed in the order of the central amine, the terminal amines, the central carboxyl, the terminal carboxyl, the other terminal carboxyl and central amine. During the protonation of the terminal amine, there existed a large fraction of proton transfer from the central amine to the other terminal amine.
