The photo-induced decarbonylation of Cp'Cr(NO)(CO)(2) (1a) in MeCN solution in the presence of R2E2 (E = S, Se; R = Me, Ph) leads to the formation of chalcogenolato-bridged binuclear complexes Cp-2'Cr-2(NO)(2)(mu -ER)(2) [E = S; R = Me (2a), Ph (3a); E = Se, R = Me (4a), Ph (5a)] while reactions between Cp'M(NO)(CO)(2) [M = Mo (1b), W (1c)] and Ph2E2 (E = S, Se) result in mononuclear complexes Cp'M(NO)(EPh)(2) [M = Mo; E = S (9b), Se (10b); M = W, E = S (11c), Se (12c)]. The corresponding reactions of (1b) with Me2E2 (E = S, Se) yielded both mono and binuclear complexes: Cp'Mo(NO)(SeMe)(2) (8b), Cp-2'Mo-2(NO)(2)(mu -EMe)(2) [E = S (6b), Se (7b)]. The new complexes have been characterized by i.r., H-1-, C-13-n.m.r. spectra and by electron-impact mass spectrometry.

Novel high spin tri-, tetra-, pentaradicals, composed of triazine coupling units and cationic amino radical spin centers (+ . NH) under various configurations and linkages, are predicted from AM1-CI calculations. It is found that for charged planar multiradicals the stability of high spin ground states depends on both the molecular configuration and the number of end groups. Generally, cyclic 1,3-bridged charged multiradicals (S less than or equal to 5/2) possess more stable high spin ground states than their isomers under the branched 1,3,5,-bridged configuration. Therefore, it is suggested that in the design of planar high spin molecules with stable high spin ground states, less end groups and all the supposed spin centers and/or the coupling units should be under the same structural situation. Three organoselenium-containing derivatives of beta-cyclodextrins (beta-CD), mono-6-benzylseleno-6-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin (compound 1), 6,6'-trimethylenediseleno bridged beta-cyclodextrin dimer(compound 2) and 6,6'- (o-phenylene)diseleno bridged beta-cyclodextrin dimer (compound 3) functioned as mimics of selenium-containing glutathione peroxidase(SeGPX). Acting on H2O2 and GSH, the SeGPX activities of these compounds were 0.83-, 0.26-, and 1. 23-fold of that of Ebselen (0.99 U/mu mol), respectively. The relationship between the structure and the function of these compounds was studied. The results suggested that the hydrophobicity and rigidity of phenyl group is the main reason that accounted for the higher activity of compounds 3 and 1. Phenyl group not only provided the hydrophobic circumstance which is necessary for the catalytic function of selenium, but also make it possible that the cyclodextrin unit of compounds 1 and 3 combines the substrate with a more effective direction. Fluorometric techniques were utilized to determine the yields of the hydroxyl radical produced by Fenton reactions through the formation of hydroxy benzoic acids from benzoate. Compared with Ebselen which showed a significant inhibition effect on the formation of HO., these organoselenium-containing cyclodextrins showed a little scavenging effect on the formation of HO. throughout the whole process.

Four novel polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of two new double betaine derivatives have been synthesized and structurally determined. In [{La-2(L-1)(2)(H2O)(9)}(n)]Cl-6n. 2nH(2)O (1) and [{Tb(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. nH(2)O (2) (L-1 =4,4'-trimethylenedipyridinio-N,N'-diacetate), the lanthanide(III) ions form a two-dimensional layer in which each pair of lanthanide(III) ions is bridged by two syn-anti mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups. Adjacent layers are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions, to form a three-dimensional network. Isomorphous [{Ln(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. 5nH(2)O (Ln=La, 3; Ln=Tb, 4; L-2=1,3 bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) each contain a centrosymmetric paddle-wheel-like dimeric unit in which each pair of adjacent metal atoms is bridged by four syn-syn mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups that are oriented nearly perpendicular to each other about the metal-metal axis. Neighboring dimeric subunits are bridged by a pair of flexible LL ligands into a polymeric chain. Adjacent chains are inter-linked by hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions into a three-dimensional network. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A novel europium(III) coordination polymer with a new double betaine derivative, {[Eu(L')(NO3)(H2O)(3)](NO3)(2). 3.5H(2)O}(n) (L-1 = 1,3-bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) has been synthesized and its structure determined. Its luminescence properties have also been studied. The title metal carboxylate coordination polymer contains centrosymmetric dimeric units in which each pair of metal ions is linked by a pair of syn-anti carboxylato-O,O' groups, and each pair of such dimeric units is bridged by the backbones of L-1 ligands to form infinite double chains in the b direction. These metal carboxylate chains are further cross-linked by hydrogen bonds among both coordinated and discrete nitrate anions, aqua ligands and lattice water molecules to form a three-dimensional network. Luminescent data show that the L-1 ligand is a good energy donor and the complex has a relatively long luminescent lifetime.

A new nickel (II)-cyanometallates modified on glassy carbon electrode was prepared by a new method and studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that the NiHCF film existed in two forms: Ni2Fe(II)-(CN)(6) and M2NiFe(II)(CN)(6), Fe(CN)(3)(6-) codeposited in the NiHCF film existing in free cation or bridged-bond state depended on the property of the cations in electrolyte: in NaCl and LiCl solution, it is in bridges-bonded, but in HCl and KCl, it is free.

A new Er(III)-Na(I) coordination polymer of stoichiometry [NaEr2L5(H2O)(6)(NO3)](NO3). 3.5H(2)O (HL = picolinic acid N-oxide) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are triclinic, P (1) over bar with a = 9.823(2), b = 12.453(2), c = 20.643(4) Angstrom; alpha = 98.49(3), beta = 101.40(3), gamma = 108.69(3)degrees; V = 2284(1) Angstrom(3); Z = 2. Of the two independent eight-coordinate erbium(III) ions in this complex, one is surrounded by four bidentate chelating L ligands, and the other by one bidentate chelating L ligand, four aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two neighboring [ErL4] units. The sodium(I) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, being coordinated by a unidentate nitrate anion, three aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two adjacent [ErL4] units. The complex is built from zigzag chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged erbium(III) moieties directed in the a direction, which are cross-linked pairwise by aqua-bridged dimeric sodium(I) units. The resulting composite polymeric chains are further connected by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional network.

The fundamental aspects of ion/neutral complex as an important intermediate of unimolecular fragmentation in mass spectrometry have been summarized in this review, especially for the classified description of its formations, characteristics, reactions, investigation methods, recent achievements and application. Meanwhile, another kind of proton-bound complex, which is a special type of ion/neutral complex, has been also introduced briefly. Among them, a part of authors' work was included.

By [2 + 2] Schiff base condensation of 5 - bromo - 2 - methoxylbenzene - 1,3 - dicarboxaldehyde with diethylenetriamine, a new hexaaza 24 - membered macrocyclic ligand was obtained,which formed a macrocyclic binuclear copper(I) complex in the presence of [Cu . (CH3CN)(4)]ClO4. When the copper(I) complex was oxidized in air or oxygen, a new macrocyclic binuclear copper( II) complex was obtained. The copper( II.) complex was characterized by several methods and its oxidized products was characterized by H-1 NMR. The results show that during oxidation, a methoxyl group in the ligand ring broke; and the phenoxy - and water - bridged Cu(II) complex formed. In oxidation of monooxygenase such as ligninase, oxidative demethylation also happened. Therefore this work mimicked this process for the first time by using macrocyclic complex. The quantity of absorbed oxygen and the absorption rate of oxygen were determined.

Gas permeability coefficients of a series of aromatic polyimides, which were prepared from oxydiphthalic dianhydride (ODPA) with various aromatic diamines, with respect to H-2, CO2, O-2, N-2, and CH4 were measured under 10 atm and in the temperature range from 30 to 150 degrees C. A significant change in gas permeability and permselectivity resulting from systematic variation of the chemical structure of the polyimides was found. Among the polyimides which were prepared from phenylenediamine and its derivatives as well as bridged diamines without side groups on the benzene rings of the diamine residues, the increase of the gas permeability is accompanied by a decrease of the permselectivity. However, both the gas permeability and the permselectivity of the polyimides which were prepared from bridged diamines with methyl or methoxy groups on the benzene rings of the diamine residues simultaneously increase.

The crystal structure of a novel macrocyclic ligand complex of Pr-III, C112H178O52N8S4Pr2, [Pr2L2(HL)(2)(H2O)(6)]. 22H(2)O is reported. The macrocyclic ligand has pendant acetic acid through which the ligand is coordinated to the Pr-III ion. For the dimeric unit, [Pr2L2(HL)(2)(H2O)(6)], two Pr-III ions are connected by two bridging-chelating carboxyl groups and two bridging carboxyl groups of the ligands, and each Pr-III ion is also bonded to a unidentate carboxyl group of the ligand and three water molecules. The dimeric units are bridged by four ligands through their carboxyl groups to form an infinite one-dimensional chain. The coordination number of the Pr-III ion is nine, with a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic configuration. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Several isomeric aromatic diester-diacids may appear as a result of the opening selectivity of anhydride groups towards the alcohol. H-1 n.m.r. was thus used to characterize the isomeric structure and to quantify the isomer composition. It was found that the isomer ratios quantitatively correlate with electron affinity of bridged dianhydrides and is independent of the alcohol structure used. Furthermore, the H-1 n.m.r chemical shift of bridged diester-diacids was found to be a very sensitive probe of chemical nature of bridged groups and can be used as indices of the opening selectivity. Permeability coefficients of H-2, O-2, and N2 were measured under 10 atm at the temperature from ambient temperature up to 150 degrees C in a series of structurally different aromatic homo- and copolyimides, which were prepared from 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) or 4,4'-methylene dianiline (MDA) with various aromatic dianhydrides. The study shows that the molecular structure of the polyimides strongly influences gas permeability and permselectivity. As a result, the permeability coefficients of the polyimide membranes for each gas vary by over two orders of magnitude. In general, among the polyimide membranes studied, the increase in permeability of polymers is accompanied by the decrease in permselectivity, and the MDA-based polyimide membranes have higher permeability than ODA-based ones. Among the polyimides prepared from bridged dianhydrides, the permeability coefficients to H-2, O-2, and N-2 are progressively increased in the order BPDA < BTDA < ODPA similar to TDPA < DSDA ( SiDA < 6FDA, while H-2/N-2 and O-2/N-2 permselectivity coefficients are progressively decreased in the same order. The copolyimide membranes, which were prepared from 3,3',4,4' biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)dimethylsilane dianhydride (SiDA), and ODA, have favorable gas separation properties and are useful for H-2/N-2 separation applications. [(Bu(t)Cp)(2)LnCH(3)](2) (Ln = Nd, Gd) react with PhC=CH to form the dimeric alkynide-bridged complexes [(Bu(t)Cp)(2)LnC=CPh](2) [Ln = Nd (I), Gd (II)]. Both compounds crystallized from toluene in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The two complexes are homologous, composed of asymmetric metal-alkynide bridges with Nd-C, Gd-C (alkynide) bond lengths of 2.602(4), 2.641(5) (I) and 2.532(6), 2.601(7) Angstrom (II), respectively. The average Nd-C (ring) and Gd-C (ring) distances are 2.746(13) and 2.703(19)Angstrom.
