The characteristics of intermediates of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) can be verified by chemical modification of its surroundings. CeO2 nanoparticles, which were obtained using water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion and calcined at various temperatures, were used as chemical additive for the modification of bR. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the mean particle sizes for the samples calcined at 500 and 800 degrees C are approximately 10 and 30 nm, respectively. We prepared CeO2 nanoparticle modified poly(vinyl alcohol) (bR-PVA) films with an optical density of about 1.5 at the ground state. It is observed that the lifetime of the Wintermediate for the modified films is prolonged compared with that of the unmodified ones, and the lifetime increases with decreasing particle size. A probable mechanism, which is likely to involve effective molecular interactions between the CeO2 nanoparticles and the bR molecules, is discussed. The hydroxyl groups, which might arise from the interaction between the nanoparticles and the surrounding water molecules, help to lower the ability of the Schiff base of uptaking protons in the Wintermediate. The results indicate that controlling the interactions between biomolecules and various nanomaterials would enlarge the functionality and the range of the application of nanoparticles.

The influences of additive, diluents, temperature, acidity of the aqueous phase on the interfacial behavior of primary amine N1923 in sulfate media have been investigated using the Du Nouy ring method. In addition, the effect of concentration of thorium(IV) loaded in the organic phase on the interfacial tension has also been studied. The interfacial tension isotherms are processed by matching different adsorption equations such as the Gibbs and the Szyszkowski. The surface excess at the saturated interface (Gamma (max)) and the minimum bulk concentration of the extractant necessary to saturate the interface (C-min) under different conditions are calculated according to two adsorption equations to be presented in comprehensive tables and figures. It appears that primary amine N1923 has strong interfacial activity and behaves very differently in various diluents systems. The surface excess at saturated interface increase with the type of diluerits in the following order: chloroform < aromatic hydrocarbons < aliphatic hydrocarbons. The relationship between the interfacial activity and kinetics of thorium extraction by primary amine N1923 has been discussed by considering different factors. However, the interfacial activity of primary amine N1923 is only a qualitative parameter suggesting the interfacial mechanism for thorium extraction, it cannot give strong evidence quantitatively supporting this mechanism.

Organically modified montmorillonites (OMMTs) by octadecylammonium chloride with two adsorption levels were dispersed in polyamide 12 (PA12) matrices with two molecular weights for different melt mixing times in order to investigate morphology evolutions and factors influencing fabrication of PA12 nanocomposites. Different adsorption levels of the modifier in the OMMTs provide different environments for diffusion of polymer chains and different attractions between MMT layers. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and gas permeability were used to characterize morphologies of the nanocomposites. Both OMMTs can be exfoliated in the PA12 matrix with higher molecular weight, but only OMMT with lower adsorption level can be exfoliated in the PA12 matrix with lower molecular weight. It was attributed to the differences in the levels of shear stress and molecular diffusion in the nanocomposites. The exfoliation of OMMT platelets results from a combination of molecular diffusion and shear. After intercalation of PA12 into interlayer of OMMT in the initial period of mixing, further dispersion of OMMTs in PA12 matrices is controlled by a slippage process of MMT layers during fabricating PA12 nanocomposites with exfoliated structure.

Three kinds of organically modified Na+-montmorillonites (OMMTs), including two kinds of octadecylammonium modified montmorillonite with different contents of octadecylammonium and a kind of sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDSo) modified montmorillonite, were used to prepare polyamide 12 (PA12)/OMMT nanocomposites. Effects of the modifiers on degradation and fire retardancy of PA12/OMMT nanocomposites were investigated. Acid sites formed in cationic surfactant modified MMT via Hoffman decomposition could accelerate degradation of PA12 at high temperature. However, catalytic effect of the acid sites on carbonization of the degradation products promoted char barrier formation, which reduced heat release rate (HRR). Higher content of cationic surfactant in OMMT is beneficial to fire retardancy of PA12 nanocomposites and the dispersion states of OMMT have assistant effects. In contrast, Na+-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and anionic surfactant modified MMT (a-MMT) could not form acid sites on the MMT layers; in this case, fire retardancy of PA12/Na-MMT appears to have no improvement and PA12/a-MMT appears to have limited improvement.

Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) was used to investigate the effects of shear on the crystallization behavior of polypropylene (PP) with beta-nucleating agent. The melt was subjected to shear at the shear rate from 0.5 to 60 s(-1) for 5 s with a CSS450 shear stage. For the PP with low content of the additive, the formation mechanism of the beta crystals is almost the same as that of pure isotactic polypropylene (iPP), viz., shear induces. Otherwise, for the samples with high content of the additive, the formation mechanism of the beta form are nucleating agent induces. The results clearly show that shear restrains the formation of high beta phase for the melt with additive.

With the presence of biopolymer-sodium alginate as additive, Eu-doped ZnO (zinc oxide) urchins consisting of nanorods were synthesized through a hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction pattern makes evident the absence of phase other than wurtzite ZnO. Upon excited by 325 nm xenon laser, such nanostructured Eu-doped ZnO urchins emit white light, which originates from the luminescence of ZnO and the intra-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. Besides acting as stabilizing agent, sodium alginate may also sensitize the Eu3+ ions in the nanostructures and facilitate the energy transfer from the host to Eu3+ ions. CE/tris(2,2-bipyridyl) ruthenium(ll) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) electrochemiluminescence (ECL), CEECL, with an ionic liquid (IL) detection system was established for the determination of bioactive constituents in Chinese traditional medicine opium poppy which contain large amounts of coexistent substances. A minimal sample pretreatment which involves a one-step extraction approach avoids both sample loss and environmental pollution. As the nearby hydroxyl groups in some alkaloid such as morphine may react with borate to form complexes and IL, as a high-conductivity additive in running buffer, could cause an enhanced field-amplified effect of electrokinetic injection. Running buffer containing 25 mM borax-8 mM 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF(4)) IL (pH 9.18) was used which resulted in significant changes in separation selectivity and obvious enhancement in ECL intensities for those alkaloids with similar structures. Sensitive detection could be achieved when the distance between the Pt working electrode and the outlet of separation capillary was set at 150 mu m and the stainless steel cannula was fixed approximately 1 cm away from the outlet of the capillary. Quantitative analysis of four alkaloids was achieved at a detection voltage of 1.2 V and a separation voltage of 15 kV in less than 7 min.

The crystallization behavior and morphology of nonreactive and reactive melt-mixed blends of polypropylene (PP) and polyamide (PA12; as the dispersed phase) were investigated. It Was found that the crystallization behavior and the size of the PA12 particles were dependent on the content of the compatibilizer (maleic anhydride-modified polypropylene) because an in situ reaction occurred between the maleic anhydride groups of the compatibilizer and the amide end groups of PA12. When the amount of compatibilizer was more than 4%, the PA12 did not crystallize at temperatures typical for bulk crystallization. These finely dispersed PA12 particles crystallized co-incidently with the 1313 phase. The changes in domain size with compatibilizer content were consistent with Wu's theory. These investigations showed that crystallization of the dispersed phase Could not be explained solely by the size of the dispersion. The interfacial tension between the polymeric components in the blends may yield information on the fractionation of crystallization.

Vanadium has well-documented lowering glucose properties both in vitro and in vivo. The design of new oxovanadium(IV) coordination compounds, intended for use as insulin-enhancing agents in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, can potentially benefit from a synergistic approach, in which the whole complex has more than an additive effect from its component parts. Biological testing with oxovanadium(IV) organic phosphonic acid, for insulin-enhancing potential included acute administration, by oral gavage in streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats. The complexes of oxovanadium(IV) amino acid-N-phosphonic acid exhibit higher lowering glucose activity in vivo. The interaction of the complexes of oxovanadium(IV) amino acid-N-phosphonic acid with DNA was investigated by agarose gel electrophoresis. The results indicated that these complexes have strong interaction with DNA.

The fabrication of multilayer microstructures, for example for organic field-effect transistors, using metal transfer printing (MTP) is demonstrated. The Figure shows a two-layer gold structure produced by MTP. Since MTP is a purely additive technique, in which mechanical adhesion acts as the patterning driving force, it is considered an attractive approach to reel-to-reel processing.

The polymerization of acrylonitrile was studied using ( diisopropylamido) his ( indenyl) lanthanides, Ind(2)LnN(i-Pr)(2)(Ln = Y, Yb) as a single-component catalyst. The effects of the amount of catalyst, monomer concentration and polymerization temperature on catalytic activity and molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were studied. The results show that the catalytic activity is raised obviously with rising polymerization temperature. The monomer conversion reaches 64% under polymerization temperature, monomer concentration and catalyst concentration are 50 degreesC, 5.1 mol . L (-1) and 0. 3 % (molar ratio) sequentially. The conversion and molecular weight of the polymer increase appreciably with adding additive, PhONa. When the molar ratio of PhONa to the catalyst is three I the conversion and the molecular weight is 76% and 1.32 x 10(4), respectively. The initiation mechanism for the polymerization of acrylonitrile was proposed.

Polypyrrole film electrode with Co(W2O7)(6)(10-) and CuW12O406- ions were synthesised in aqueous solutions, The electrode possesses a good stability and cyclic voltammetric behavior in weakly acidic or near neutral solutions, The redox of CuW12O406- ion can be catalysed by the polypyrrole film, The ESR measurement of the polypyrrole film with Co(W2O7)(6)(10-) and CuW12O406- ions indicates that the heteropolyanions not only play the role of neutralizing electricity in the polypyrrole film, contrasted with the film containing NO3-, but also Interact with the polypyrrole molecular chain to form some additive compound, The additive compound affects the electric structure elf the polypyrrole film and is unstable at more positive or more negative potentials.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an image analyser are used to study morphologies of the fractured surface, etched by hot phenol, of polypropylene/maleated polypropylene/polyamide 12 PP/PP-MA/PA12) = 65/10/25 blend and PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend. The particle dimension and its distribution of PA12 dispersed phase in these blends are much lower and narrower than that of the PP/PA12. blends. Especially, most of the particles in the PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend are smaller than 0.1 mu m. The effect of the morphology of PP/PA12 blends on their crystallization behaviour is studied using differential scanning calorimetry and SEM. PA12 dispersed phase coarsens during annealing in the PP/PP-MA/PA12 = 65/10/25 blend. The mechanism of coarsening of the PA12 dispersed phase is a coalescence process. The intense mixing between the PP component and the PA12 component through reaction of PP-MA and PA12 leads to a change of dynamic mechanical behaviour of the components. A separation method is used to separate the polyolefin parts (precipitated from hot phenol), from PA12 parts (hot phenol filtrate). Of PP/PP-MA/PA12 = 65/10/25 blend, infra-red measurements and elementary analysis show that the precipitate has a lower PA12 content than the feed, whereas the filtrate has a higher PA12 content. From PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend, PA12 contents in the precipitate and the filtrate are the same as in the feed. This implies that all PA12 has reacted with all PP-MA in the latter case while not in the former case. Using the method of interface exposure, interfacial reaction of PP-MA with PA12 is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (X.p.s.). Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
