Poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) (PPO) was sulfonated to varying degrees using different sulfonating agents. Physical properties such as solubility, density, and thermal properties were studied for both PPO and sulfonated PPO (SPPO) with different degree

The permeation behaviors of water vapor and gases were studied for both PPO and SPPO of different sulfonation degree. It was found that the permeability of water vapor increased, and those of oxygen and nitrogen decreased; thus the selectivity for water v

Polycarbonate (PC) and poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) was co-extruded at different weight ratios by a single screw extruder. In order to obtain a finer blend, two times extrusion was carried out. In this case, a ''network'' structure with two-continuous phases was observed for the blends with two compositions of PC/ABS, being 80/20 and 70/30. It is found that the blends with these two compositions just have maximum values on the curves of notched Izod impact strength, flexural modulus and flexural strength vs. composition, respectively. This was never observed in previous publications.

The excimer fluorescence of a triblock copolymer, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) containing 48 wt% polystyrene was used to investigate its miscibility with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME). The excimer-to-monomer emission intensity ratio I(M)/I(E) can be used as a sensitive probe to determine the miscibility level in SBS/PVME blends: I(M)/I(E) is a function of PVME concentration, and reaches a maximum when the blend contains 60% PVME. The cloud point curve determined by light scattering shows a pseudo upper critical solution temperature diagram, which can be attributed to the effect of PB segments in SBS. The thermally induced phase separation of SBS/PVME blends can be observed by measuring I(M)/I(E), and the phase dissolution process was followed by measuring I(M)/I(E) at different times.

Melt-crystallized poly(vinylidene fluoride)s (PVF2) with different crystallization histories were irradiated with gamma-rays within the range of irradiation doses 0-83 Mrad. The effects on the crystalline structure and mechanical properties have been measured, compared, and discussed. The degree of crystallinity of the samples was found to increase with radiation dose. The differential scanning calorimeter scans of the quenched samples indicate that there are two melting peaks, and that the area of the lower temperature peak increases while the area of higher temperature peak decreases with increasing dose. Yield stress and breaking stress for all samples are not significantly affected by irradiation but elongation at break is.

Diphenyl-o-tolylmethyl methacrylate (DPTMA) was synthesized and polymerized using initiators of organolithium complexes with (+) - (2S,3S) -dimethoxy-1,4-bis(dimethylamino) butane (DDB) and (-) -sparteine (Sp) as the chiral ligands. DDB was suitable for its complex effective to prepare optically active poly(diphenyl-o-tolylmethyl methacrylate) (PDPTMA) with one-handed helical conformation, whereas only low-molecular weight polymer was formed when Sp was used as ligand due to the repulsive hindrance between the triarylmethyl group and the ligand. A new mutarotation, propeller-propeller transition, was observed for PDPTMA from the optical rotation curves and CD spectra in THF solution. The equivalent period of PDPTMA was estimated to be 14 angstrom based on the x-ray diffraction. (C) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Diphenyl-o-methoxyphenylmethyl methacrylate was polymerized with several organolithium complexes of chiral ligand such as (-)-sparteine (Sp) and (S,S)-(+)-2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-bis(dimethylamino)butane (DDB). (+)-DDB was effective in preparing a polymer of high optical rotation, whereas (-)-Sp only gave oligomers with low optical rotation for the repulsive hindrance between the bulky ester group and the rigid ligand. The optical rotation of the polymer decreased rapidly to a constant value due to the propeller-propeller transition, which has been demonstrated by H-1 n.m.r. and circular dichroic spectra.

Impedance study was carried out for the interfaces between lithium, polyaniline (PAn), lithium-doped MnO2 and modified poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolyte under various' conditions. The interfacial charge-transfer resistances R(ct) on PEO/PAn, R(ct) on PEO/LiMn2O4 increase with depth-of-discharge and decrease after the charge of the cell containing modified PEO as electrolyte. The charge-transfer resistance R(ct) on PEO/PAn is higher than R(ct) on PEO/LiMn2O4 under the same condition, since inserted species and mechanism are different for both cases. In the case of PAn, an additional charge-transfer resistance might be related to the electronic conductivity change in discharge/charge potential range, as it was evident from a voltammetry curve. With increasing cycle numbers, the charge-transfer resistance increases gradually. The impedance results also have shown that at low frequency the diffusion control is dominant in the process of the charge and discharge of Li/PEO/PAn or Li/PEO/LiMn2O4 cell. The diffusion coefficients have been calculated from impedance data.

Blends of crystallizable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVPy) were studied by C-13 cross-polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) n.m.r. and d.s.c. The C-13 CP/MAS spectra show that the blends were miscible on a molecular level over the whole composition range studied, and that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds of PVA were broken and intermolecular hydrogen bonds between PVA and PVPy formed when the two polymers were mixed. The results of a spin-lattice relaxation study indicate that blending of the two polymers reduced the average intermolecular distance and molecular motion of each component, even in the miscible amorphous phase, and that addition of PVPy into PVA has a definite effect on the crystallinity of PVA in the blends over the whole composition range, yet there is still detectable crystallinity even when the PVPy content is as high as 80 wt%. These results are consistent with those obtained from d.s.c. studies.
