A novel biodegradable triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(L-lysine) (PEG-PLA-PLL) was synthesized by acidolysis of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(F-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) (PEG-PLA-PZLL) obtained by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine N-carboxyanhydride (ZLys NCA) with amino-terminated PEG-PLA-NH2 as a macro-initiator, and the pendant amino groups of the lysine residues were modified with a peptide known to modulate cellular functions, Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser-Tyr (GRGDSY, abbreviated as RGD) in the presence of 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI). The structures of PEG-PLA-PLL/RGD and its precursors were confirmed by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, amino acid analysis and XPS analysis. The cell adhesion and cell spread on the PEG-PLA-PLL/RGD film were enhanced compared to those on pure PLA film. Therefore, the novel RGD-grafted triblock copolymer is promising for cell or tissue engineering applications. Both copolymers PEG-PLA-PZLL and PEG-PLA-PLL showed an amphiphilic nature and could self-assemble into micelles of homogeneous spherical morphology. The micelles were determined by fluorescence technique, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and could be expected to find application in drug and gene delivery systems.

The effects of both organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and Ni2O3 on the carbonization of polypropylene (PP) during pyrolysis were investigated. The results from TEM and Raman spectroscopy showed that the carbonized products of PP were mainly multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Surprisingly, a combination of OMMT and Ni2O3 led to high-yield formation of MWNTs. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and GC-MS were used to investigate the mechanism of this combination for the high-yield formation of MWNTs from PP. Bronsted acid sites were created in degraded OMMT layers by thermal decomposition of the modifiers. The resultant carbenium ions play an important role in the carbonization of PP and the formation of MWNTs. The degradation of PP was induced by the presence of carbenium ions to form predominantly products with lower carbon numbers that could be easily catalyzed by the nickel catalyst for the growth of MWNTs. Furthermore, carbenium ions are active intermediates that promote the growth of MWNTs from the degradation products with higher carbon numbers through hydride-transfer reactions. The XRD measurements showed that Ni2O3 was reduced into metallic nickel (Ni) in situ to afford the active sites for the growth of MWNTs.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were efficiently synthesized by catalytic combustion of polypropylene (PP) using nickel compounds (such as Ni2O3, NiO, Ni(OH)(2) and NiCO3 (.) 2Ni(OH)(2)) as catalysts in the presence of organic-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) at 630-830 degrees C. Morphologies of the sample undergoing different combustion times were observed to investigate actual process producing MWCNTs by this method. The obtained MWCNTs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope and Raman spectroscopy. The yield of MWCNTs was affected by the composition of PP mixtures with OMMT and nickel compounds and the combustion temperature. The proton acidic sites from the degraded OMMT layers due to the Hoffman reaction of the modifiers at high temperature played an important role in the catalytic degradation of PP to supply carbon sources that are easy to be catalyzed by nickel catalyst for the growth of MWCNTs. The XRD measurements demonstrated that the nickel compounds were in situ reduced into the Ni(0) state with the aid of hydrogen gas and/or hydrocarbons in the degradation products of PP, and the Ni(O) was really the active site for the growth of MWCNTs. The combination of nickel compounds with OMMT was a key factor to efficiently synthesize MWCNTs via catalytic combustion of PP.

The degradation and flame retardancy of polypropylene/organically modified montmorillonite (PP/OMMT) nanocomposite were studied by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and cone calorimeter. The catalysis of hydrogen proton containing montmorillonite (H-MMT) derived from thermal decomposition of (alkyl) ammonium in the OMMT on degradation of PP strongly influence carbonization behavior of PP and then flame retardancy. Bronsted acid sites on the H-MMT could catalyze degradation reaction of PP via cationic mechanism, which leads to the formation of char during combustion of PP via hydride transfer reaction. A continuous carbonaceous MMT-rich char on the surface of the burned residues, which work as a protective barrier to heat and mass transfer, results from the homogeneous dispersion of OMMT in the PP matrix and appropriate char produced.

Novel biodegradable hydrogels by photo-cross-linking macromers based on polyphosphoesters and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) are reported. Photo-cross-linkable macromers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of the cyclic phosphoester monomer 2-(2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholoyloxy) ethyl methacrylate (OPEMA) using PEG as the initiator and stannous octoate as the catalyst. The macrorners were characterized by H-1 NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography measurements. The content of polyphosphoester in the macromer was controlled by varying the feed ratio of OPEMA to PEG. Hydrogels were fabricated by exposing aqueous solutions of macromers with 0.05% (w/w) photoinitiator to UV light irradiation, and their swelling kinetics as well as degradation behaviors were evaluated. The results demonstrated that cross-linking density and pH values strongly affected the degradation rates. The macromers was compatible to osteoblast cells, not exhibiting significant cytotoxicity up to 0.5 mg/mL. "Live/dead" cell staining assay also demonstrated that a large majority of the osteoblast cells remained viable after encapsulation into the hydrogel constructs, showing their potential as tissue engineering scaffolds.

Isothermal crystallization kinetics under shear in the melt of iPP was investigated by optical microscopy. It appears that shearing from 200 to the crystallization temperatures enhanced the kinetics, but the shear effect was not obvious if the melt of iPP was sheared only at 200. The experiment results show that relaxation plays an important role during crystallization, and that spherulite growth rates increased with shear rates and were governed by relaxation. The effect of flow on the crystallization kinetics can be understood by considering that the increase of the degree of order due to flow results is an effective change of the melt free energy. The Laurizen-Hoffman theory and the DE-IAA model were used to describe the shear-induced crystallization kinetics of iPP excellently.

The crystalline modifications alpha and beta of polypropylene (PP) were studied by using polarized light microscopy (PLM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Typically beta crystals surrounded by alpha spherulites were observed at low temperature. With increasing temperature the beta crystals melted and a new crystal appeared. More interestingly, the melting temperature of the new crystal was about 5degrees higher than that of alpha spherulites originally present in the sample formed isothermally. It was assumed that this new crystal was the recrystalline alpha crystal. This assumption was supported by the DSC results. Furthermore, the crystallization kinetics of the PP used was studied on the basis of the traditional Avrami analysis. As a result, the Avrami exponents of crystallization temperature from 120 to 130degreesC ranged between 4.21 and 3.60, indicating that the crystallization mechanism of PP order melt was spherulitic growth and random nucleation.

Notch Izod impact strength of poly(propylene) (PP)/glass bead blends was studied as a function of temperature. The results indicated that the toughness for various blends could undergo a brittle-ductile transition (BDT) with increasing temperature. The BDT temperature (T-BD) decreased with increasing glass bead content. Introducing the interparticle distance (ID) concept into the study, it was found that the critical interparticle distance (IDc) reduced with increasing test temperature correspondingly. The static tensile tests showed that the Young's modulus of the blends decreased slightly first and thereafter increased with increasing glass bead content. However, the yield stress decreased considerably with the increase in glass bead content. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) measurements revealed that the heat-deflection temperature of the PP could be much improved by the incorporation of glass beads. Moreover, the glass transition temperature (T-g) increased obviously with increasing glass beads content. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results implied that the addition of glass beads could change the crystallinity as well as the melting temperature of the PP slightly.

Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) was used to investigate the effects of shear on the crystallization behavior of polypropylene (PP) with beta-nucleating agent. The melt was subjected to shear at the shear rate from 0.5 to 60 s(-1) for 5 s with a CSS450 shear stage. For the PP with low content of the additive, the formation mechanism of the beta crystals is almost the same as that of pure isotactic polypropylene (iPP), viz., shear induces. Otherwise, for the samples with high content of the additive, the formation mechanism of the beta form are nucleating agent induces. The results clearly show that shear restrains the formation of high beta phase for the melt with additive.

The crystallization behavior of two polypropylene (PP) resins as used for biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and general injection mold applications, respectively, has been intensively investigated and compared by means of polarized light optical micrography (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It is found that both molecular weight distribution and isotacticity of polypropylene strongly affect its crystallization characteristics, e.g., the number of crystal nuclei at the initial stage, crystallization dynamics, the morphology, size and perfection of crystals in the final product, and so on. The results indicate an appropriate molecular structure is vital in producing high-quality BOPP film.

To study the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) blends induced by size, temperature, and time, the toughness of the PP/EPDM blends was investigated over wide ranges of EPDM content, temperature, and strain rate. The toughness of the blends was determined from the tensile fracture energy of the side-edge notched samples. The concept of interparticle distance (ID) was introduced into this study to probe the size effect on the BDT of PP/EPDM blends, whereas the effect of time corresponded to that of strain rate. The BDT induced by size, temperature, and time was observed in the fracture energy versus ID, temperature, and strain rate. The critical BDT temperatures for various EPDM contents at different initial strain rates were obtained from these transitions. The critical interparticle distance (IDc) increased nonlinearly with increasing temperature, and when the initial strain rate was lower, the IDc was larger. Moreover, the variation of the reciprocal of the initial strain rate with the reciprocal of temperature followed different straight lines for various EPDM contents. These straight lines were with the same slope.

Poly(ethylene glycol) -poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymers PEG-PCL were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of c-caprolactone using monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) as the macroinitiator and calcium ammoniate as the catalyst. Obvious mutual influence between PEG and PCL crystallization was studied by altering the relative block length. Fixing the length of the PEG block (M-n = 5000) and increasing the length of the PCL block, the crystallization temperature of the PCL block rose gradually from I to about 35 degreesC while that of the PEG block dropped from 36 to -6.6 degreesC. Meanwhile, the melting temperature of the PCL block went up from 30 to 60 degreesC, while that of the PEG block declined from 60 to 41 degreesC. If the PCL block was longer than the PEG block, the former would crystallize first when cooling from a molten state and led to obviously imperfect crystallization of PEG and vice versa. And they both crystallized at the same temperature, if their weight fractions were equal. We found that the PEG block could still crystallize at -6.6 degreesC even when its weight fraction is only 14%. A unique morphology of concentric spherulites was observed for PEG5000-PCL5000.

Crystallization behavior, structural development and morphology evolution in a series of diblock copolymers Of poly(L-lactide)-blockpoly(ethylene glycol) (PLLA-b-PEG) were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In these copolymers, both blocks are crystallizable and biocompatible. It was interesting that these PLLA-b-PEG diblock copolymers could form spherulites with banded textures, which was undercooling dependent. Single crystals with an abundance of screw dislocations were also observed via AFM. Such results indicated that these ringed spherulites and single crystals were formed during the crystallization of the PLLA blocks.

The partitioning behavior of four amino acids, cysteine, phenylalanine, methionine, and lysine in 15 aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) with different polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecular weights and phosphate buffers has been studied in the present paper. The phase diagrams of the systems are investigated together with the effect of the PEG molecular weight and pH of the phosphate solutions. The composition of these systems and some parameters such as density and refractive index are determined. The influences of salts in ATPSs, side chain structure of the amino acids, pH of ATPSs, and the PEG molecular weight on the distribution ratios of the amino acids have been studied. This work is useful for the purification of amino acids and the separation of some proteins whose main surface exposed amino acid residues are these four amino acids, respectively.
