The extraction kinetics of ytterbium with sec-nonylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-100) in heptane have been investigated using a constant interfacial area cell with laminar flow. The influence of stirring speed and temperature on the rate indicated that the extraction rate was controlled by the experiment conditions. The plot of interfacial area on the rate showed a linear relationship. This fact together with the low solubility in water and strong surface activity of CA-100 at heptane-water interfaces made the interface the most probable locale for the chemical reactions. The influences of extractant concentration and hydrogen ion concentration on the extraction rate were investigated, and the forward and reverse rate equations for the ytterbium extraction with CA-100 were also obtained. Based on the experimental data, the apparent forward extraction rate constant was calculated. Interfacial reaction models were proposed that agree well with the rate equations obtained from experimental data.

Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescence (ECL) method and electrocatalysis method were first used to study the ion-gate behavior of supported lipid bilayer membrane (sBLM). We found that sBLM, made of dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (a kind of synthetic lipid), showed ion-gate behavior for the permeation of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) in the presence of perchlorate anion. There existed a threshold concentration (0.1 muM) of perchlorate anion for ion-gate opening. Below the threshold the ion-gate was closed. Above the threshold, the number of opened ion-gate sites increased with the increase of perchlorate anion concentration and leveled off at concentrations higher than 1200 muM. Based on it, a new sensor for perchlorate was developed. Furthermore, the opening and closing of the ion-gate behavior was reversible, which means the sensor can repeatedly be used.

Facilitated alkali metal ion (M+= Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) transfers across the micro- and nano-water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/DCE) interfaces supported at the tips of micro- and nanopipets by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) have been investigated systematically using cyclic voltammetry. The theory developed by Matsuda et al. was applied to estimate the association constants of DB18C6 and M+ in the DCE phase based on the experimental voltammetric results. The kinetic measurements for alkali metal ion transfer across the W/DCE interface facilitated by DB18C6 were conducted using nanopipets or-submicropipets, and the standard rate constants (k(0)) were evaluated by analysis of the experimental voltammetric data. They increase in the following order: k(Cs+)(0) < k(Li+)(0) < k(Rb+)(0) < k(Na+)(0) < k(K+)(0), which is in accordance with their association constants except Cs+ and Li+.

The Yttrium(III) extraction kinetics and mechanism with secnonylphonoxy acetic acid (CA-100) were investigated by a constant interfacial cell with laminar flow. The studies of interfacial tension and solubility of extractant and effects of the stirring rate, temperature, specific interfacial area and species concentration on the extraction rate showed that the extraction regime was dependent on the extraction conditions and the most probable reaction zone was at the liquid-liquid interface. The rate equation of extracting yttrium by CA-100 in heptane was Rf = k[Y3+]((a))[H(2)A(2)]((o))(0.88)[H+]((a))(-1.08).

In this paper, we describe a simple procedure to make agar-gel microelectrodes by filling micropipettes. These microelectrodes were used to study K+ transfer across the agar-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6), and the transfer of tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)). The results observed were similar to those obtained at micro-liquid \ liquid interfaces. The effect of various amounts of agar in the aqueous phase was optimized and 3% agar was chosen based on the potential window and solidification time. The different shapes of micro-agar-gel electrodes were prepared in a similar way. The fabricated agar-gel microelectrodes obey the classical micro-disk steady-state current equation, which is different from the behavior of a normal micropipette filled with aqueous solution without silanization. Propylamine has been selected to investigate the isotope effect of a fast deuteron transfer reaction by ultrasonic relaxation method. Ultrasonic absorption coefficients of propylamine in heavy water (D2O) at 25 degrees C in the concentration range from 0.0107 to 0.6300 mol dm(-3) have been measured by pulse and resonance methods over the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz. A Debye-type single relaxation absorption has been observed in the solution. From the dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters on the concentration and solution pH, the source of the observed relaxation has been attributed to a perturbation of the chemical equilibrium associated with the deuteron transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been determined by the measurement of the deuteroxyl ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency. Also the standard volume change of the reaction has been determined from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength and the adiabatic compressibility has been calculated from the density and the sound velocity in the solution. These results have then been compared with those obtained for propylamine in light water (H2O). The forward rate constant is greater and the reverse rate constant is smaller in DO than in H2O. The standard volume change for deuteron transfer is greater than that for proton transfer reaction, and the adiabatic compressibility shows a similar trend. These data support an argument that there exists a stronger hydrogen bond in D2O than in H2O. The difference of the stability in the intermediate states, R-ND3+... OD- and R-NH3+... OH-, has also been considered from the results of the isotope effects.

Gramicidin within the lipid bilayer matrix is a well-known channel-forming polypeptide, but the mechanism of the ions across the membrane induced by gramicidin is not well understood. We found that at very low concentration of gramicidin in a bilayer lipid membrane, the channel behavior was controlled by the voltage applied across the membrane. When the voltage is higher than 75 mV, the channel is closing, while lower than 75 mV, the channel is opening. But when the concentration of the gramicidin in the BLMs is high, the channel behavior is changed into voltage-independent. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we study the ion transfer across the liquid/liquid interface by impedance spectrum technique in the four - electrode system. We present a method of getting the real interfacial impedance curve from the apparent impedance curve obtained in the four - electrode system. A practical kinetics investigation on the transfer of tetramethylammonium ion at the water/nitrobenzene interface was done with the method to verify the validity of the method. The transfer of tetramethylammonium ion at the W/O interface is really a reversible transfer.
