Based on the 2 x 2 (electric field) cross-spectral density matrix, a model for an electromagnetic J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam is given that is a generalization of the scalar J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam. The conditions that the matrix for the source to generate an electromagnetic J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam are obtained. The condition for the source to generate a scalar J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam can be considered as a special case. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

It is shown that the locus of the f' + if '' plot in the complex plane, f' being determined from measured f '' by using the dispersion relation, looks like a semicircle very near the absorption edge of Ge. The semicircular locus is derived from a quantum theory of X-ray resonant scattering when there is a sharp isolated peak in f '' just above the K-absorption edge. Using the semicircular behavior, an approach is proposed to determine the anomalous scattering factors in a crystal by fitting known calculated values based on an isolated-atom model to a semicircular focus. The determined anomalous scattering factors f' show excellent agreement with the measured values just below the absorption edge. In addition, the phase determination of a crystal structure factor has been considered by using the semicircular behavior.

Variations of peak position of the rocking curve in the Bragg case are measured from a Ge thin crystal near the K-absorption edge. The variations are caused by a phase change of the real part of the atomic scattering factor. Based on the measurement, the values of the real part are determined with an accuracy of better than 1%. The values are the most reliable ones among those reported values so far as they are directly determined from the normal atomic scattering factors.

In general, the propagating behavior of extraordinary wave in anisotropic materials is different from that in isotropic materials. With the tangential continuity of Maxwell's equations, the electromagnetic propagating behaviors have been investigated at the incident and exit interfaces of the uniaxial anisotropic thin film. The emphasis was placed on two interesting optical phenomena such as homolateral refraction behavior and wide-angle Brewster's phenomenon, which occurred at the interfaces of uniaxial anisotropic thin film.

By introducing the scattering probability of a subsurface defect (SSD) and statistical distribution functions of SSD radius, refractive index, and position, we derive an extended bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) from the Jones scattering matrix. This function is applicable to the calculation for comparison with measurement of polarized light-scattering resulting from a SSD. A numerical calculation of the extended BRDF for the case of p-polarized incident light was performed by means of the Monte Carlo method. Our numerical results indicate that the extended BRDF strongly depends on the light incidence angle, the light scattering angle, and the out-of-plane azimuth angle. We observe a 180 degrees symmetry with respect to the azimuth angle. We further investigate the influence of the SSD density, the substrate refractive index, and the statistical distributions of the SSD radius and refractive index on the extended BRDF. For transparent substrates, we also find the dependence of the extended BRDF on the SSD positions. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

A total integrated scattering (TIS) measurement was performed to investigate the surface and volume scattering of K9 glass substrates with low reflectance. Ag layers with thicknesses of 60 nm were deposited on the front and back surfaces of the K9 glass substrates by the magnetron sputtering technique. Surface scattering of the K9 glass substrate was obtained by the TIS measurement of the Ag layers on the assumption that the Ag layers and the K9 substrate had the same surface profile. Volume scattering of the substrates was deduced by subtracting the front and back surface scattering from the total scattering of the substrates. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

In the present study, we examined the effects of extremely low-frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields on morphine-induced conditioned place preferences in rats. During the conditioning phase (12 days), three groups of rats were placed in a sensory cue-defined environment paired with morphine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) following exposure to either 20 Hz (1.80 mT) or 50 Hz (2.20 mT) or sham electromagnetic fields for 60 min/day, respectively, and were placed in another sensory cue-defined environment paired with physiological saline (1 ml/kg, i.p.) without exposure to electromagnetic fields. After finishing 12 days of conditioning, preference tests for the morphine-paired place were performed during a 10-day withdrawal period. The exposure to electromagnetic fields substantially potentiated morphine-induced place preferences in rodents, suggesting that ELF electromagnetic fields can increase the propensity for morphine-induced conditioned behaviors. The theoretical electron mobility limited by dislocation scattering of a two-dimensional electron gas confined near the interface of AlxGa1-xN/GaN heterostructures was calculated. Based on the model of treating dislocation as a charged line, an exponentially varied potential was adopted to calculate the mobility. The estimated mobility suggests that such a choice can simplify the calculation without introducing significant deviation from experimental data, and we obtained a good fitting between the calculated and experimental results. It was found that the measured mobility is dominated by interface roughness and dislocation scattering at low temperatures if dislocation density is relatively high (>10(9) cm(-2)), and accounts for the nearly flattening-out behavior with increasing temperature.

Raman scattering (RS) experiments have been performed for simultaneous determination of Mn composition and strain in Ga1-xMnxSb thin films grown on GaSb substrate by liquid phase epitaxy technique. The Raman spectra obtained from various Ga1-xMnxSb samples show only GaSb-like phonon modes whose frequency positions are found to have Mn compositional dependence. With the combination of epilayer strain model, RS and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) experiments, the compositional dependence of GaSb-like LO phonon frequency is proposed both in strained and unstrained conditions. The proposed relationships are used to evaluate Mn composition and strain from the Ga1-xMnxSb samples. The results obtained from the RS data are found to be in good agreement with those determined independently by the EDX analysis. Furthermore, the frequency positions of MnSb-like phonon modes are suggested by reduced-mass model. (C) 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

By utilizing time-resolved Kerr rotation techniques, we have investigated the spin dynamics of a high-mobility low density two-dimensional electron gas in a GaAs/Al0.35Ga0.65As heterostructure in the dependence on temperature from 1.5 to 30 K. It is found that the spin relaxation/dephasing time under a magnetic field of 0.5 T exhibits a maximum of 3.12 ns around 14 K, which is superimposed on an increasing background with rising temperature. The appearance of the maximum is ascribed to that at the temperature where the crossover from the degenerate to the nondegenerate regime takes place, electron-electron Coulomb scattering becomes strongest, and thus inhomogeneous precession broadening due to the D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism becomes weakest. These results agree with the recent theoretical predictions [J. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. B 15, 045305 (2007)], which verify the importance of electron-electron Coulomb scattering to electron spin relaxation/dephasing.
