The mass transfer behaviors of Cd(II), Fe(III), Zn(II), and Eu(III) in sulfuric acid solution using microporous hollow fiber membrane (HFM) containing bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid (commercial name Cyanex302) were investigated in this paper. The experimental results showed that the values of the mass transfer coefficients (K-w) decreased with an increase of H+ concentration and increased with an increase of extractant Cyanex302 concentration. The mass transfer resistance of Eu3+ was the largest because K-w value of Eu3+ was the smallest. The order of mass transfer rate of metal ions at low pH was Cd > Zn > Fe > Eu. Mixtures of Zn2+ and Eu3+ or of Zn2+ and Cd2+ were well separated in a counter-current circulation experiment using two modules connected in series at different initial acidity and concentration ratio. These results indicate that a hollow fiber membrane extractor is capable of separating the mixture compounds by controlling the acidity of the aqueous solution and by exploiting different mass transfer kinetics. The interfacial activity of Cyanex302 in sulfuric acid solution was measured and interfacial parameters were obtained according to Gibbs adsorption equation.

Two new compounds, [CoL2(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2). 8H(2)O (1) and [CoL(H2O)(2)(CH3CO2)(2)]. H2O (2), were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(benzimidazole) (L). In 1, each cobalt ion is coordinated to four nitrogen atoms from four molecules of L, and to two water molecules. Metal ions are bridged by L ligands to form infinite (4, 4) networks that contain 44-membered rings. The (4, 4) networks of 1 stack in a parallel fashion, resulting in the formation of large channels in the material. In 2, each cobalt ion is coordinated to two N atoms from two L molecules, two water molecules and two carboxylate O atoms from two acetate anions. Each L molecule is coordinated to two cobalt ions, acting as a bridging ligand as in 1. The bridged cobalt ions form an infinite zigzag chain structure.

The efficient synthesis of 5-(5-bromovaleramido)-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-(6-bromohexanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline, and 5-(11-bromoundecanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline are described, which reacted with cis-Ru(bpy)(2)Cl-2. 2H(2)O and sodium hexafluorophosphate to form Ru(bpy)(2)[phen-NHCO(CH2)(n)Br](PF6)(2) (n = 4, 5 or 10; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The intricate H-1 NMR spectra at low field of these complexes were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY technique. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study electrochemical behaviours of these complexes, and their luminescent properties were investigated with fluorescent spectra.

The reaction of diglycolic acid, O(CH2CO2H)(2), with Cu(NO3)(2) . H2O and lanthanoid nitrate hydrate produces a series of novel Ln-Cu mixed metal complexes, [Ln(2)CU(3){O(CH2CO2)(2)}(6)]. nH(2)O (Ln = La, Nd, n = 9; Ln = Er, n = 6), which have been characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. spectroscopy, magnetic measurements and X-ray crystallography. The Ln(3+) and Cu2+ ions are connected by the carboxylate groups of the ligands, resulting in the formation of a complicated network.

The crystal structures, electronic spectra, and Cu2p XPS of Cu(III) complexes Na4H[Cu(H2TeO6)(2)]. 17H(2)O and Na4K[Cu(HlO(6))(2)]. 12H(2)O have been described. The characterizations of a Cu(III) atom in a complex are as follows: (i) In a square-planar coordination, the average bond length of Cu-O is 0.183 nm, shorter than the 0.190-0.200 nm found for a Cu(II) complex. (2) The ''blue shift'' occurs for d-d transitions in the electronic spectrum of the Cu(III) complex compared to those of its related Cu(II) complex, resulting from the higher valence state. (3) Cu(III) compounds with CuO4 square-planar coordination are expected to be diamagnetic whereas Cu(II) compounds to be paramagnetic. (4) Comprehensive investigations on Cu2p XPS show that the binding energy of Cu2p(3/2) of a pure Cu(III) compound is about 2.0 eV higher than that of its corresponding Cu(II) compound: the shake-up satellites do not appear in the Cu2p XPS for a pure diamagnetic Cu(III) compound, the same as found for a diamagnetic Ni(II) compound: the FWHM of the signal of Cu2p XPS may become broader for Cu(III) compound because its core hole's lifetime shortens due to the higher valence state of copper. The behaviour of the electroplated copper film electrode on tin oxide/glass or glassy carbon surface was studied in potassium hydroxide medium by cyclic voltammetry and in situ transmission spectroelectrochemistry. The results indicate that the electroplated copper film electrode is similar to a copper electrode and cyclic voltammetry with this electrode affords more resolution. The anodic peaks were found to correspond successively to the adsorption of oxygen, the formation of a surface layer of Cu2O, the formation of a surface layer of Cu(OH)2 or CuO and formation of a thick multilayer film of CuO. This is the first time it has been proposed that a surface layer of Cu(OH)2 or CuO is formed from the oxidation of the surface layer of Cu2O. Similarly, a clear interpretation is presented that the cathodic peaks correspond successively to the reduction of CuO to Cu2O, the reductions of Cu2O to Cu and the soluble Cu(II) species to Cu. On the other hand, a shoulder peak related to the chemical transformation of Cu(OH)2 to CuO was first observed.

The title coordination polymer, {[Ni3Na(OH)(C9H3O6)(2)( H2O)(11)] center dot 1.5H(2)O}(n), is built up from three independent Ni-II ions and one Na-I cation bridged by benzene-2,4,6-tricarboxylate ( BTC) ligands and water molecules. Three Ni-II ions are bridged by three bidentate carboxylate groups of three BTC ligands, two aqua ligands and one OH- unit, to form a trinuclear metal cluster. The Na-I cation is bonded to the Ni-II cluster by two bridging water molecules. One of the three BTC ligands bridges neighbouring clusters into one-dimensional chains, which are further connected through a complex hydrogen-bonding scheme, forming a three-dimensional suprastructure. The title complex is isomorphous with the previously reported Co-II complex.
