A soluble polymer emitting green color with high efficiency was synthesized. Bright green electroluminescence devices, both single layer and multilayer, were fabricated. The luminous efficiency was improved dramatically. Carrier injection from the electrodes to the emissive layer and concomitant green electroluminescence from the emissive layer were observed. A luminance of 920 cd/m(2) and luminous efficiency of 5.35 1m/W were achieved at a drive voltage of 15 V for the multilayer device. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

An organo-soluble polyimide based on 4,4'-(1,4-phenylenedioxy)diphthalic anhydride and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylenedianiline was synthesized by two-step polycondensation accompanied by chemical imidization. Polyimide films were prepared by spray casting onto glass substrates. The study focused on the separation of carbon dioxide (CO2) from natural gas and the enrichment of methane (CH4) from butane (C4H18). The permeability and permselectivity coefficients of these gases were determined.

A series of new optically active aromatic polyimides containing axially dissymmetric 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2-diyl units were prepared from optically pure (R)-(+)-or (S)-(-)-2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalene dianhydrides and various aromatic diamines via a conventional two-step procedure that included ring-opening polycondensation and chemical cyclodehydration. The optically pure isomer of dianhydride was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of optically pure (R)-(+)or (S)-(-)1,1'-bi-2-naphthol with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent and subsequent hydrolysis of the resultant tetranitrile derivatives, followed by the dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acids to obtain the dianhydrides. These polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and m-cresol, etc., and have glass transition temperatures of 251-296 degrees C, and 5% weight loss occurs not lower than 480 degrees C. The specific rotations of the optically active polyimides ranged from +196 degrees to +263 degrees, and the optical stability and chiroptical properties of them were also studied. A series of novel aromatic diamines (1-3) containing kinked cyclohexylidene moieties was synthesized by a reaction of excess aniline and corresponding methyl-substituted cyclohexanone derivatives. The structures of (1-3) were identifield by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and FT-IR. The polymers were synthesized from the obtained diamines and various aromatic dianhydrides by the conventional polycondensation reaction followed by chemical imidization as well as high-temperature one-step polymerization. The inherent viscosities and weight-average molecular weights of the resulting polyimides were in the ranges of 0.55-1.58 dL/g and (7.4-15.2) x 10(4) g/mol, respectively. The prepared polyimides showed excellent thermal stabilities and good solubility. All polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, tetrachloroethane, etc., and the glass transition temperatures were observed at 290-372 degrees C.

The changes in refractive indices (n(TE) and n(TM)) in a direction normal to the plane of thin films of an organo-soluble polyimide based on 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline were measured by a prism coupler. The results implied that the molecules near the substrate-polyimide interface were much ordered, while those near the polyimide-air interface were less ordered, judging from the variation in the level of negative birefringence with the depth of the films. The molecules are more condensed near the substrate surface, as seen by the average refractive index increasing from the polyimide-air interface to the substrate-polyimide interface, which implies that the condensed states of polyimide molecules change gradually in the depth direction. A red color filter was laminated from a solution of red color pigment and an organo-soluble polyamide, based on 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA). The red color filter in a polyamide matrix with negative birefringence plays an important role in twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs). The red color filter, and also compensation films, extend the viewing angle of LCDs. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of three kinds of soluble polyimides were prepared with the direct deposition method, The monolayer structures were characterized with W-vis absorption spectroscopy, the wide angle X-ray scattering method and electrochemical techniques. The polyimide molecules in the LB monolayers lie orderly on the substrate surfaces with the orientation in which the dianhydride group is normal to the substrate surface and two carbonyl oxygen groups close to the surface. Therefore, the thickness of the three kinds of polyimide LB monolayers are the same because it depends on the distance between the two carbonyl oxygen groups in the same ring. The area of monomeric units are dependent on the length of the diamine group. The model of the molecular packing proposed from the quantomechanical calculation is in good agreement with the experimental results. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

2,2'-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride was used as a new monomer with various aromatic diamines to obtain polyimides by the usual two-step method. The bis(ether anhydride) was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of I,1'-bi-2-naphthol with N-phenyl-4-chlorophthalimide, N-methyl-4-nitrophthalimide or 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent, and subsequent hydrolysis of the resulting bis(ether imide)s or bis(ether dinitrile), and then dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acid to afford the dianhydride. Most of the obtained polyimides were soluble in chloroform, pyridine, DMF, etc. The polyimide prepared from p-phenylene diamine was partial crystalline, whereas the others showed amorphous patterns in a WAXD study. These polymers have glass transition temperatures between 255-294 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures in the range of 502-541 degrees C in nitrogen and 473-537 degrees C in air. Two soluble high-performance polyimides, poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMDA), in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C have been studied using laser light scattering. We found that the z-average radius of gyration ([R(g)]) can be scaled to the weight-average molecular weight (M(w)) as [R(g)] (nm) = 4.95 x 10(-2)M(w)(0.52) and [R(g)] (nm) = 1.25 x 10(-2)M(w)(0.66) respectively for poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMDA), indicating that poly(ODPA/DMMDA) in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C has a more extended chain conformation than poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA). Using the wormlike chain model approach, we found that the Flory characteristic ratios (C*) of poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMDA) are similar to 20 and similar to 31, respectively, indicating that both of them have a slightly extended chain conformation in comparison with typical flexible polymer chains, such as polystyrene, whose C-infinity is similar to 10. A combination of the weight-average molar mass (M(w)) with the translational diffusion coefficient distributions (G(D)) has led to D (cm(2)/s) = 3.53 x 10(-4)M(-0.579) and D (cm(2)/s) = 4.30 x 10(-4)M(-0.613) respectively for two soluble high-performance polyimides, poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMTA), in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C. Using these two calibrations, we have successfully characterized the molar mass distributions of the two polyimides from their corresponding G(D)s. The exponents of these two calibrations further confirm that both of the polyimides have a slightly extended coil chain conformation in CHCl3. The chain flexibility difference between these two polyimides has also been discussed.

A new phosphate, KMgY(PO4)(2), isostructural with xenotime, was firstly reported in detail. It crystallizes in tetragonal system with space group I4(1)/amd (No. 141). The cell parameters were obtained from X-ray powder diffraction data with a=0.6886, c=0.6025 nm, 2=2. The proposed structure of KMgY(PO4)(2) was further confirmed by its vibrational spectra, IR and Raman spectra, which were also compared with those of iso-structural YPO4.

A new double phosphate, KCaY(PO4)(2), isostructural with hexagonal LaPO4, is reported. It crystallizes in the hexagonal system with a = 0.6903 nm and c = 0.6331 nm. Its vibrational spectra, IR and Raman spectra showed that the site symmetry of the PO4 anion slightly deviated from D-2 toward C-2.

A new compound KMgLa(PO4)(2), isotypic with monoclinic LaPO4, is reported. Its cell parameters have been determined from X-ray powder diffraction data. Crystallization occurs in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n (No. 14) with a = 6.839(3) Angstrom, b = 7.066(1) Angstrom, c = 6.523(3) Angstrom, beta = 103.42(4)degrees, and Z = 2. It was found that the KMgLa(PO4)(2) phase was isostructural with monoclinic LaPO4. The difference between them was that half of the La atoms in LaPO4 were couplingly substituted with the same amount of Mg and K atoms. This isomorphous substitution was confirmed by IR and Eu3+-doped excitation and emission spectra and by elemental analysis of single crystals. The spectroscopic data were compared with those of LaPO4:Eu3+. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

The electrochemical behaviours of three kinds of soluble polyimides were investigated for the first time. It was observed that the cyclic voltammograms(CVS) of these polyimides in nonaqueous solutions are obviously different from that of the poly-imide films casted on surfaces of glass carbon electrode(GCEs) in aqueous solutions.

A method for the specific determination of cobalt based on reversed-phase liquid chromatography with amperometric detection via on-column complex formation has been developed. A water-soluble chelating agent, 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid (PAN-6S), is added to the mobile phase and aqueous cobalt solutions are injected directly into the column to form in situ the cobalt-PAN-6S chelate, which is then separated from other metal PAN-6S chelates and subjected to reductive amperometric detection at a moderate potential of -0.3 V. Because the procedure eliminates the interference of oxygen and depresses the electrochemical reduction of the mobile phase-containing ligand PAN-6S, by virtue of the quasi:reversible electrode process of the cobalt-PAN-6S complex, a low detection limit of 0.06 ng can be readily obtained. Interference effects were examined for sixteen common metal species, and at a 5- to 8000-fold excess by mass no obvious interference was observed. The feasibility of the method as an approach to the specific analysis of cobalt in a hair sample has been demonstrated.
