2-(9-Carbazole)-ethyl-chloroformate (CEOC), a novel pre-column fluorescence derivatization reagent, has been developed for the analysis of aromatic amines. Taking five monocyclic aromatic amines (o-toluidine, aniline, 3,4-dimethylaniline, N-ethyl-p-toluidine, and p-phenylenediamine) as testing compounds, derivatization conditions such as pH of borate buffer, reaction time and fluorescent tagging reagent concentration have been investigated. By a one-step procedure, CEOC reacts readily with the aromatic amines to form stable derivatives with excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively, at 293 and 360 nm. This derivatization reaction could be finished within 20 min even at room temperature. The peak shapes of the derivatized aromatic amines can be improved greatly without any addition of competition amines into the mobile phase. Furthermore, this method can offer excellent quantitative precision with high tolerance of the matrix of samples. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new method for the sensitive determination of amino acids and peptides using the tagging reagent 2-(9-carbazole)-ethyl chloroformate (CEOC) with fluorescence (FL) detection has been developed. Identification of derivatives was carried out by liquid chromotography mass spectrometry. The chromophore in the 2-(9-fluorenyl)-ethyl chloroformate (FMOC) reagent was replaced by carbazole, which resulted in a sensitive fluorescence lerivatizing agent CEOC. CEOC can easily and quickly label peptides and amino acids. Derivatives are stable enough to be efficiently analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Studies on derivatization demonstrate excellent derivative yields over the pH range 8.8-10.0. Maximal yields close to 100% are observed with three- to fourfold molar reagent excess. Derivatives exhibit strong fluorescence and allow direct injection of the reaction mixture with no significant disturbance from the major fluorescent reagent degradation by-products, such as 2(9-carbazole)-ethanol and bis-(2-(9-carbazole)-ethyl) carbonate. In addition, the detection responses for CEOC derivatives are compared to those obtained with FMOC. The ratios AC(CEOC)/AC(FMOC) = 1.00-1.82 for fluorescence (FL) response and AC'(CEOC)/AC'(FMOC) = 1.00-1.21 for ultraviolet (UV) response are observed (here, AC and AC' are, respectively, FL and UV F response). Separation of the derivatized peptides and amino acids has been optimized on a Hypersil BDS C18 column. Excellent linear responses are observed. The separation of ethyl acetate and ethanol (EtOH) is important but difficult due to their close boiling points and formation of an azeotropic mixture. The separation of the azeotropic mixture of ethyl acetate and EtOH using the hydrophilic ionic liquids (ILs) 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (alkyl = butyl, hexyl, and octyl) ([C(n)mim]Cl, n = 4, 6, 8) and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and bromide ([Amim]Cl and [Amim]Br) has been investigated. Triangle phase diagrams of five ILs with ethyl acetate and EtOH were constructed, and the biphasic regions were found as follows: [Amim]Cl > [Amim]Br > [C(4)mim]Cl > [C(6)mim]Cl > [C(8)mim]Cl. The mechanisms of the ILs including cation, anion, and polarity effect were discussed.

Based on the dimer-monomer equilibrium movement of the fluorescent dye Pyronin Y (PY), a rapid, simple, highly sensitive, label-free method for protein detection was developed by microchip electrophoresis with LIF detection. PY formed a nonfluorescent dimer induced by the premicellar aggregation of an anionic surfactant, SDS, however, the fluorescence intensity of the system increased dramatically when proteins such as BSA, bovine hemoglobin, cytochrome c, and trypsin were added to the solution due to the transition of dimer to fluorescent monomer. Furthermore, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF(4)) instead of PBS was applied as running buffers in microchip electrophoresis.

The electrolytic deposition and diffusion of lithium onto bulk magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium alloy cathode in molten salt of 47 wt pct lithium chloride and 53 wt pct potassium chloride at 693 K were investigated. Results show that magnesium-yttrium-lithium ternary alloys are formed on the surface of the cathodes, and a penetration depth of 642 mu m is acquired after 2 hours of electrolysis at the cathodic current density of 0.06 A center dot cm(-2). The diffusion of lithium results in a great amount of precipitates in the lithium containing layer. These precipitates are the compound of Mg41Y5, which arrange along the grain boundaries and hinder the diffusion of lithium, and solid solution of yttrium in magnesium. The grain boundaries and the twins of the magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium substrate also have negative effects on the diffusion of lithium.

Fe(III), Cr(III), Fe(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) chloride complexes supported by 2,6-bis[1-(iminophenyl)ethyl]pyridine have been synthesized and characterized along with single crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes, in combination with MAO, have been examined in butadiene polymerization. The catalytic activity and regioselectivity are strongly controlled by metal center and cocatalyst (MAO/Co ratio dependent in the case of Co(II) complex). The activity decreases in the order of Fe(III) > Co(II) > Cr(III) approximate to Ni (II) complexes, in consistent with the space around the metal center. Polybutadiene with different microstructure content, from high trans-1,4 units (88-95% for iron(III) and Cr(III)), medium trans-1,4 and cis-1,4 units (55% and 35%, respectively, for iron(II)) to high cis-1,4 units 79% for Co(II) and 97% for Ni(II) call be easily achieved by varying of the metal center.

Synthetic routes to aluminium ethyl complexes supported by chiral tetradentate phenoxyamine (salan-type) ligands [Al(OC6H2(R-6-R-4)CH2)(2){CH3N(C6H10)NCH3}-C2H5] 7: R = H ; 5, 8: R = Cl; 6, 9: R = CH3) are reported. Enantiornerically pure salan ligands 1-3 with (R,R) configurations at their cyclohexane rings afforded the complexes 4, 5, and 6 as mixtures of two diastereoisomers (a and b). Each diastereoisomer a was, as determined by X-ray analysis, monomeric with a five-coordinated aluminium central core in the solid state, adopting a cis-(O,O) and cis-(Me,Me) ligand geometry. From the results of variable-temperature (VT) H-1 NMR in the temperature range of 220-335 K, H-1-H-1 NOESY at 220 K, and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), it is concluded that each diastereoisomer b is also monomeric with a five-coordinated aluminium central core.

A cation-driven allosteric G-quadruplex DNAzyme (PW17) was utilized to devise a conceptually new class of DNA logic gate based on cation-tuned ligand binding and release. K+ favors the binding of hemin to parallel-stranded PW17, thereby promoting the DNAzyme activity, whereas Pb2+ induces PW17 to undergo a parallel-to-antiparallel conformation transition and thus drives hemin to release from the G-quadruplex, deactivating the DNAzyme. Such a K+-Pb2+ switched G-quadruplex, in fact, functions as a two-input INHIBIT logic gate. With the introduction of another input EDTA, this G-quadruplex can be further utilized to construct a reversibly operated IMPLICATION gate.

In this work, we studied the reaction between Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) by the UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy. The absorption peak of Au NPs disappeared after adding [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) and the XPS data conformed the formation of [Au(CN)(2)](-). The results demonstrated that [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) could induce the dissolution of Au NPs, where the CN- from the dissociation of [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) played an important role.

Doubly charged cluster ions, besides singly charged cluster ions, from sodium and potassium nitrates were produced evidently under normal source capillary temperature of 200 degrees C in both positive and negative ion electrospray ionization (ESI) ion trap mass spectrometry. The fragmentation pathways for doubly charged cluster ions were studied in detail using ESI tandem mass spectrometry and two pathways were observed depending on the cluster sizes of alkali metal nitrates. In addition, factors that affect the formation of cluster ions were also interrogated.

One inorganic-organic hybrid and two host-guest complexes were synthesized from calix[4] arene tetra acetic ether derivative( C60H80O12, L) and potassium polyoxometalates. The structures of the complexes were characterized with the elemental analysis, IR, TG-DTA and X-crystallographic. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal the formation of an ionic crystal, which contains a calix-cluster and calix-cluster-calix line array, and belongs to a typical inorganic-organic hybrid ( complex 1) or has a host-guest structure ( complex 2 and 3). The results of cyclic voltammograms at different scanning rates showed that the anode peak current of complex 1 was proportional to the square root of the scanning rate and the charge transfer process was controlled by pervasion. The anode peak current of complexes 2 and 3 was proportional to the scanning rate and the charge transfer process was controlled by the surface. The results suggest that there are consanguineous relationship between the anode reaction and the structure.

A facile molten salt synthesis route was developed to prepare ZnTiO3 ceramic powders with simple oxides ZnO and TiO2 using sodium and potassium chloride eutectic salts as flux. The role of calcination temperature and time and the amount of salt addition to ZnTiO3 formation was investigated by thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transformation-infrared spectroscopy measurements. Pure hexagonal phase of ZnTiO3 could be obtained from the mixture of the simple oxides and the chlorides (50 mol% KCl, 20 times to oxides in molar ratio) heating at 800 degrees C for 6 h. The scanning electron microscopy images revealed the products were hexagonal sheets of about 1-3 mu m size. Increasing the amount of salt aids in reducing the crystal sizes of final ceramic powders because of diluting the solution.

Maleic anhydride end capped poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC-MA) was blended with ethyl cellulose (EC) by casting from dichloromethane solutions. The thermotropic liquid crystallinity, thermal decomposition behavior, and aggregated structure were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TGA), and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). DSC exhibits thermotropic liquid crystallinity in the rich EC composition range. TGA shows that thermal decomposition temperatures were elevated upon interfusing EC into PPC-MA. WAXD corroborates that EC and PPC-MA/EC blend films cast from dilute dichloromethane solution possessed cholesteric liquid crystalline structure in the rich EC composition range, and that dilution of PPC-MA with EC increased the dimension of noncrystalline region, leading to a more ordered packed structure.
