Heteropolyacids (HPAs) supported on the activated carbon (SiW12/C and PW12/C) have been used to study the formation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Compared to the conventional commercial catalysts, Amberlyst-15 resin and HZSM-5, HPAs supported catalysts have been proved to have much higher catalytic activity under lower temperature, especially selectivity to MTBE is up to 100%. It may be due to the high acid strength of HPAs as well as the specialty of heteropolyanion.

The vapor phase esterification of acetic acid with ethanol and n-butanol catalyzed by SiW12 supported on activated carbon was studied in a flow fixed-bed reactor in the range of 358 to 433 K. The effects of the reaction temperature, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) as well as the molar ratio on the catalytic activity have been investigated. The kinetic studies showed that the rate of esterification was dependent on the partial pressures of the reactants and the addition of argon, an inert diluent in the system when the total pressure was kept at 1 atm. Also the alcohol structure has a profound effect on not only the rate of esterification, but also on the mechanism of esterification changing from a dual site mechanism for ethanol to a single site mechanism for n-butanol.

In various acidic media, such as H2SO4, HCl, H3PO4, acetic acid of 3 M in hydrogen ion concentration, and pure acetic acid, the adsorption of heteropolyacids composed of molybdenum with the Keggin structures PMo12 and SiMo12 on different activated carbons is studied. In acidic media, the adsorbed amount of heteropolyacids is much higher than that in water. By considering the relation between adsorbed amount and the acid strength of the media, as far as SiMo12 and PMo12 are concerned, there exist different trends.

In order to define the force of heteropoly acids on absorbed activated carbon surface, IR spectra of 12-silicotungstic acid (SiW12) and 12-tungstophosphoric acid (PW12) absorbed on activated carbon and in oxygen-containing organic compound solutions were studied. Based on the IR spectra and UV characteristics of the heteropoly acids in various chemical conditions, the chemical bonding between heteropoly acid and oxygen-containing gropus on the surface of activated carbon was suggested.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), stable carbon isotopic (delta(13)C) compositions of DOC and particulate organic carbon (POC), and elemental C/N ratios of POC were measured for samples collected from the lower Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers and adjacent coastal waters in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the low flow season in June 2000 and high flow season in April 2001. These isotopic and C/N results combined with DOC measurements were used to assess the sources and transport of terrestrial organic matter from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers to the coastal region in the northern Gulf of Mexico. delta(13)C values of both POC (-23.8parts per thousand to -26.8parts per thousand) and DOC (-25.0parts per thousand to -29.0parts per thousand) carried by the two rivers were more depleted than the values measured for the samples collected in the offshore waters. Strong seasonal variations in delta(13)C distributions were observed for both POC and DOC in the surface waters of the region. Fresh water discharge and horizontal mixing played important roles in the distribution and transport of terrestrial POC and DOC offshore. Our results indicate that both POC and DOC exhibited non-conservative behavior during the mixing especially in the mid-salinity range. Based on a simple two end-member mixing model, the comparison of the measured DOC-delta(13)C with the calculated conservative isotopic mixing curve indicated that there was a significant in situ production of marine-derived DOC in the mid- to high-salinity waters consistent with our in situ chlorophyll-a measurements. Our DOC-delta(13)C data suggest that a removal of terrestrial DOC mainly occurred in the high-salinity (>25) waters during the mixing. Our study indicates that the mid- to high- (10-30) salinity range was the most dynamic zone for organic carbon transport and cycling in the Mississippi River estuary. Variability in isotopic and elemental compositions along with variability in DOC and POC concentrations suggest that autochthonous production, bacterial utilization, and photo-oxidation could all play important roles in regulating and removing terrestrial DOC in the northern Gulf of Mexico and further study of these individual processes is warranted. The cobalt carbide (Co2C) species was formed in some activated carbon supported cobalt-based (Co/AC) catalysts during the activation of catalysts. It was found that the activity of Fischer-Tropsch reaction over Co-based catalysts decreased due to the formation of cobalt carbide species. Some promoters and pretreatment of activated carbon with steam could restrain the formation of cobalt carbide.

Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has attracted wide attention due to its many advantages. However, its practical application is limited by the low electrocatalytic activity of the anodic Pt/C catalyst usually used for the methanol oxidation. In this paper, in order to increase the electrocatalytic performance of the Pt/C catalyst for the methanol oxidation, the black carbon, usually used as the supporter, was pretreated with CO2, air, HNO3 or H2O2. The cyclic voltarnmetric results indicated that the current densities of the anodic peak of methanol oxidation at the Pt/C catalysts with the black carbon pretreated with CO2,air, HN03, H202 and untreated black carbon were 39, 33, 32, 20 and 18 mA center dot cm(-2), respectively, illustrating that among the above five kinds of the Pt/C catalysts, the Pt/C catalyst with the black carbon pretreated with CO2 shows the best electrocatalytic activity and stability for the methanol oxidation. Its main reason is that the CO2 pretreatment could reduce the content of the oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the black carbon and increase the content of graphite in the black carbon, leading to the low resistance of the black carbon and the increase in the dispersion extent of the Pt particles in the Pt/C catalyst.

The typology and flux of settling particulate matter (SPM) were investigated based on sediment trap sampling at six typical stations in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The settling particulate matter in the neritic seas was sorted into three categories, lithogenic particles, living organisms, and particle aggregates. The mass of individual organisms is an important portion of particulate matter in the neritic waters. The aggregates contain six types, mucus aggregates, fecal pellets, diatom aggregates, silicoflagellate aggregates, tintinnids, and miscellaneous aggregates, of which the silicoflagellate aggregates and tintinnids are the most abundant in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. High particle fluxes, such as 215 to 874 g m(-2). day(-1) SPM in the bottom layer, were found at three stations where the water was well mixed, and the maximum flux was detected in the boundary area between the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, where a wide nepheloid layer was present. Hence, particle flux in neritic waters can be easily shifted by water turbulence. The net vertical flux (123 to 961 mg C day(-1)), the contribution of lateral advection to resuspension flux (5 to 76%), and the particulate organic carbon export ratio (18 to 60%) were estimated for the other three stations where the water was stratified. The highest values were all found in the upwelling area off the Zhejiang coast, suggesting that the area of high productivity provides a high net vertical flux of SPM. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A one-year field study was conducted to determine the conversion ratio of phytoplankton biomass carbon (Phyto-C) to chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in Jiaozhou Bay, China. We measured suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) and phytoplankton Chl-a samples collected in surface water monthly from March 2005 to February 2006. The temporal and spatial variations of Chl-a and POC concentrations were observed in the bay. Based on the field measurements, a linear regression model II was used to generate the conversion ratio of Phyto-C to Chl-a. In most cases, a good linear correlation was found between the observed POC and Chl-a concentrations, and the calculated conversion ratios ranged from 26 to 250 with a mean value of 56 A mu g A mu g(-1). The conversion ratio in the fall was higher than that in the winter and spring months, and had the lowest values in the summer. The ratios also exhibited spatial variations, generally with low values in the near shore regions and relatively high values in offshore waters. Our study suggests that temperature was likely to be the main factor influencing the observed seasonal variations of conversion ratios while nutrient supply and light penetration played important roles in controlling the spatial variations.

Research related to carbon geochemistry and biogeochemistry in the East China Sea is reviewed in this paper. The East China Sea is an annual net sink for atmospheric CO, and a large net source of dissolved inorganic carbon to the ocean. The sea absorbs CO, from the atmosphere in spring and summer and releases it in autumn and winter. The East China Sea is a CO, sink in summer because Changjiang River freshwater flows into it. The net average sea-air interface carbon flux of the East China Sea is estimated to be about 4.3 X 10(6) t/y. Vertical carbon transport is mainly in the form of particulate organic carbon in spring; more than 98% of total carbon is transported in this form in surface water, and the number exceeds 68% in water near the bottom. In the southern East China Sea, the average particulate organic carbon inventory was about one-tenth that of the dissolved organic carbon. Research indicates that the southern Okinawa Trough is an important site for particulate organic carbon export from the shelf. The annual cross-shelf exports are estimated to be 414 and 106 Gmol/y for dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic carbon, respectively. Near-bottom transport could be the key process for shelf-to-deep sea export of biogenic and lithogenic particles.

Ammonia synthesis over ruthenium catalysts supported on different carbon materials using Ba or K compounds as promoters has been investigated. Ba(NO3)(2), KOH, and KNO3 are used as the promoter or promoter precursor, and activated carbon (AC), activated carbon fiber (ACF). and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) are used as the support. The activity measurement for ammonia synthesis was carried out in a flow micro-reactor under mild conditions: 350-450 degreesC and 3.0 MPa. Results show that KOH promoter was more effective than KNO3. and that Ba(NO3)(2) was the most effective promoter among the three. The roles of promoters can be divided into the electronic modification of ruthenium, the neutralization of surface functional groups on the carbon support and the ruthenium precursor. The catalyst with AC as the support gave the highest ammonia concentration in the effluent among the supports used, while the catalyst with ACF as the support showed the highest turnover-frequency (TOF) value. It seems that the larger particles of Ru on the carbon supports are more active for ammonia synthesis in terms of TOF value. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
