A new synthetic procedure was elaborated allowing the preparation of semiaromatic dianhydride. N-Methyl protected 4-chlorophthalic anhydride was nitrated with HNO3 to produce N-methyl-4-chloro-5-nitrophthalimide (1). The aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction between 5,5',6,6'-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1-spirobisindane and 1 afforded spirobisindane-linked bis(N-methylphthalimide) (2), which was hydrolyzed and subsequently dehydrated to give the corresponding dianhydride (3). The latter was polymerized with five different aromatic diamines to afford a series of aromatic polyimides. The properties of polyimides such as inherent viscosity, solubility, UV transparency and thermal stability were investigated to illustrate the contribution of the introduction of spirobisindane groups into the polyimide backbone. The resulting polyimides were readily soluble in polar solvents such as chloroform, THF and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The glass-transition temperatures of these polyimides were in the range of 254-292 degrees C. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus of the polyimide film were 68.8-106.6 MPa, 5.9-9.8%, 1.7-2.0 GPa, respectively. The polymer films were colorless and transparent with the absorption cutoff wavelength at 286-308 nm.

A novel triptycene-based dianhydride, 1,4-bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxylphenoxy)]triptycene dianhydride, was prepared from 4-nitro-N-methylphthalimide and potassium phenolate of 1,4-dihydroxytriptycene (1). The aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction between 4-nitro-N-methylphthalimide and I afforded triptycene-based bis(N-methylphthalimide) (2), which hydrolyzed and subsequently dehydrated to give the corresponding dianhydride (3). A series of new polyimides containing triptycene moieties were prepared from the dianhydride monomer (3) and various diamines in in-cresol via conventional one-step polycondensation method. Most of the resulting polyimides were soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, THF, DMAc and DMSO. The polyimides exhibited excellent thermal and thermo-oxidative stabilities with the onset decomposition temperature and 10% weight loss temperature ranging from 448 to 486 degrees C and 526 to 565 degrees C in nitrogen atmosphere, respectively. The glass transition temperatures of the polyimides were in the range of 221-296 degrees C. The polyimide films were found to be transparent, flexible, and tough. The films had tensile strengths, elongations at break, and tensile moduli in the ranges 95-118 MPa, 5.3-16.2%, and 1.03-1.38 GPa, respectively. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that these polyimides were amorphous.

A new class of high-performance materials, fluorinated poly(phenylene-co-imide)s, were prepared by Ni(0)-catalytic coupling of 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone with fluorinated dichlorophthalimide. The synthesized copolymers have high molecular weights ((M) over bar (W)= 5.74 x 10(4)-17.3 x 10(4) g center dot mol(-1)), and a combination of desirable properties such as high solubility in common organic solvent, film-forming ability, and excellent mechanical properties. The glass transition temperature (T(g)s) of the copolymers was readily tuned to be between 219 and 354 degrees C via systematic variation of the ratio of the two comonomers. The tough polymer films, obtained by casting from solution, had tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus values in the range of 66.7-266 MPa, 2.7-13.5%, and 3.13-4.09 GPa, respectively. The oxygen permeability coefficients (P-O2) and permeability selectivity of oxygen to nitrogen (P-O2/P-N2) of these copolymer membranes were in the range of 0.78-3.01 barrer [1 barrer = 10(-10) cm(3) (STP) cm/(cm(2) center dot s center dot cmHg)] and 5.09-6.2 5, respectively. Consequently, these materials have shown promise as engineering plastics and gas-separation membrane materials.

A new class of high-performance polymers [poly(phenylene-co-naphthalimide)s] was prepared through the Ni(0) catalytic coupling of N-(4-chloro-2-trifluromethylphenyl)-5-chloro-1,8-naphthalimide and 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone. The resulting copolymers exhibited high molecular weights (high inherent viscosities) and a combination of desirable properties such as good solubility in dipolar aprotic solvents, film-forming capability, and mechanical properties. The glass-transition temperatures of the copolymers ranged from 320 to 403 degrees C and increased as the content of the naphthalimide moiety increased. Tough polymer films, obtained via casting from N-methylpyrrolidone solutions, had tensile strengths of 64-107 MPa and tensile moduli of 3.4-4.7 GPa. The gas permeability coefficients of the copolymers were measured for H-2, CO2, O-2, CH4, and N-2. They showed oxygen permeability coefficients and permeability selectivity of oxygen to nitrogen (permeability coefficient for O-2/permeability coefficient for N-2) in the ranges of 1.39-4.31 and 4.92-5.38 barrer, respectively.

A method is developed to estimate the coverage of an electropolymerizable aniline-analogue monolayer (mixture of 2- and 3-aminophenols, 2/3-ATP) by measuring the charge capacitance of the electrode (theta = 81%). The technique of filling the uncovered area (defect sites) of the aniline-analogue monolayer with alkanethiols with long alkane chains (1-decanethiol, 1-DT) has been used to determine the coverage. The dielectric constant (permittivity) of the PANI-analogue monolayer was determined to 8.4. Adsorption kinetics of 1-DT was also studied, and the value of the rate constant of the secondary adsorption was measured to 0.9 mol(-1) dm(3) s(-1).

Dithiols of N-hexadecyl-3,6-di(p-mercaptophenylacetylene)carbazole (HDMC) have been synthesized and employed to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. One characteristic of the HDMC molecule is its peculiar molecular structure consisting of a large and rigid headgroup and a small and flexible alkyl-chain tail. HDMC adsorbates can attach to gold substrates by a strong Au-S bond with weak van der Waals interactions between the alkyl-chain tails, leading to a loosely packed hydrophobic SAM. In this way we can couple hybrid bilayer membranes (HBMs) to gold surfaces with more likeness to a cell bilayer than the conventional HBMs based on densely packed long-chain alkanethiol SAMs. The insulating properties and stability of the HDMC monolayer as well as the HDMC/lipid bilayer on gold have been investigated by electrochemical techniques including cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. To test whether the quality of the bilayer is sufficiently high for biomimetic research, we incorporated the pore-forming protein a-hemolysin) and the horseradish peroxidase into the bilayers, respectively.

The immobilization of surface-derivatized gold nanoparticles onto methyl-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold surface was achieved by the cooperation of hydrophobic and electrophoretic forces. Electrochemical and scanning probe microscopy techniques were utilized to explore the influence of the SAM's structure and properties of the nanoparticle/SAM/gold system. SAMs prepared from 1-decanethiol (DT) and 2-mercapto-3-n-octylthiophene (MOT) were used as hydrophobic substrates. The DT SAM is a closely packed and organized monolayer, which can effectively block the underlying gold and inhibit a variety of solution species including organic and inorganic molecules from penetrating, whereas the MOT monolayer is poorly packed or disorganized (because of a large difference in dimension between the thiophene head and the alkylchain tail) and permeable to many organic probes in aqueous solution but not to inorganic probes. Thus, the MOT monolayer provides a more energetically favorable hydrophobic surface for the penetration and adsorption of organic species than the DT monolayer.

A new high-performance material, poly(sulfone-imide) was prepared by Ni(0)-catalyzed coupling of aromatic dichlorides containing imide structure and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone. The copolymers were produced with high yield and moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.52-1.13 dL/g. Wide-angle X-ray diffractograms revealed that the polymers were amorphous. Most of the polymers exhibited good solubility and could be readily dissolved in various solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone(NMP) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). These polysulfone-imides had glass-transition temperatures between 317 and 345 degreesC and 10% weight loss temperatures in the range of 450476 degreesC in nitrogen atmosphere. The tough polymer films, obtained by casting from cresol solution, had a tensile strength range of 21 158 MPa and a tensile modulus range of 2.1-3.3 GPa.

Chemical functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has constructed plenty of new structures with ample new properties into them. But the modification was often confined to organic molecules, either by covalence or non-covalence. In this report, SWNTs were successfully functionalized with one kind of electroactive inorganic compounds: Prussian blue (PB). And the molecular interactions between them were firstly investigated. Interestedly, pi-pi stacking interaction coupled with ionic interaction was found between SWNTs and PB. The electrochemical properties of SWNTs-PB were also investigated. It would pave a new pathway to manipulate molecular entities of SWNTs by cooperation with functional inorganic electroactive compounds.

A novel electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) sensor based on Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-doped silica (RuDS) nanoparticles conjugated with a biopolymer chitosan membrane was developed. These uniform RuDS nanoparticles ( similar to 40 nm) were prepared by a water-in-oil microemulsion method and were characterized by electrochemical and transmission electron microscopy technology. The Ru( bpy)(3)(2+)-doped interior maintained its high ECL efficiency, while the exterior nanosilica prevented the luminophor from leaching out into the aqueous solution due to the electrostatic interaction. This is the first attempt to branch out the application of RuDS nanoparticles into the field of ECL, and since a large amout of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) was immobilized three-dimensionally on the electrode, the Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) ECL signal could be enhanced greatly, which finally resulted in the increased sensitivity. This sensor shows a detection limit of 2.8 nM for tripropylamine, which is 3 orders of magnitude lower than that observed at a Nafion-based ECL sensor. Furthermore, the present ECL sensor displays outstanding long-term stability.

Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) characteristics of a blue dye coumarin 151 encapsulated in a highly ordered mesoporous SBA-15 were studied. The spectra narrowing was observed and found that the threshold and loss were greatly reduced, and the gain is significantly increased compared with spin-coated coumarin 151 doped poly(4-vinylphenol) film. The ASE threshold, gain, and loss, respectively, reached 0.55 mJ pulse(-1) cm(-2), 44.78 cm(-1), and 8.9 cm(-1) for the coumarin 151 encapsulated in mesoporous SBA-15 film. The optimized lasing action owes much to the effects of the better spatial confinement of the molecules in the ordered mesoporous structure of the host SBA-15.

The facile synthesis of the novel platinum nanoparticles/Eastman AQ55D/ruthenium(II) tris( bipyridine) (PtNPs/ AQ/Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) colloidal material for ultrasensitive ECL solid-state sensors was reported for the first time. The cation ion-exchanger AQ was used not only to immobilize ECL active species Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) but also as the dispersant of PtNPs. Colloidal characterization was accomplished by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and UV-vis spectroscopy. Directly coating the as-prepared colloid on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode produces an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor. The electronic conductivity and electroactivity of PtNPs in composite film made the sensor exhibit faster electron transfer, higher ECL intensity of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), and a shorter equilibration time than Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) immobilized in pure AQ film. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the combination of PtNPs and permselective cation exchanger made the sensor exhibite excellent ECL behavior and stability and a very low limit of detection (1 x 10(-15) M) of tripropylamine with application prospects in bioanalysis. This method was very simple, effective, and low cost.

The electrochemical polymerization of 0.01 M aniline in 1 M H2SO4 aqueous solution on roughened Au surface modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) has been investigated by in situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS). The repeat units and possible structures of the electrodeposited polyaniline (PANI) film were proposed; i.e., aniline monomer is coupled in head-to-tail predominately at the C-4 of aniline and amine of 4-ATP, and the thin PANI film is orientated vertically to substrate surface. Simultaneous Raman spectra during potential scanning indicate clearly that the ultrathin PANI film (in initial growth of the film) consists of semiquinone radical cation (IP+), para-disubstituted benzene (IP and IP+) and quinine diimine (NP) while it is oxidized, and without quinine diimine and semiquinone radical cation while reduced. Meanwhile, the results confirm that 4-ATP monolayer shows a strong promotion on the electrodeposition of aniline monomer, and a possible polymerization mechanism was proposed.

2-(4-Aminophenyl)-5-aminopyrimidine (4) is synthesized via a condensation reaction of vinamidium salts and amidine chloride salts, followed by hydrazine palladium catalyzed reduction. A series of novel homo- and copolyimides containing pyrimidine unit are prepared from the diamine and 1,4-phenylenediamine (PDA) with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) or 3,3',4,4'-biphenyl tertracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) via a conventional two-step thermal imidization method. The poly(amic acid) precursors had inherent viscosities of 0.97-4.38 dL/g (c = 0.5 g/dL, in DMAc, 30 degrees C) and all of them could be cast and thermally converted into flexible and tough polyimide films. All of the polyimides showed excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties. The glass transition temperatures of the resulting polyimides are in the range of 307-434 degrees C and the 10% weight loss temperature is in the range of 556-609 degrees C under air. The polyimide films possess strength at break in the range of 185-271 MPa, elongations at break in the range of 6.8-51%, and tensile modulus in the range of 3.5-6.46 GPa. The polymer films are insoluble in common organic solvents, exhibiting high chemical resistance.
