Physical properties of thin films of soluble and insoluble aromatic polyimides were compared by d.s.c., u.v.-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, and prism coupler technique. D.s.c. results showed that the thermal properties of insoluble polyimides are superior to those of soluble ones, owing to the specific molecular interactions of insoluble polyimides, revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. However, the specific molecular interactions sacrifice the transparency in their thin films, shown by u.v.-visible transmission spectra. Negative birefringence of thin films, not only for soluble polimides but also for polyamic acids of insoluble polyimides, was confirmed by prism coupler, while thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized lack high levels of negative birefringence. It is regarded that thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized are likely to be isotropic because of molecular relaxation above their glass transition temperatures (T-g) in the course of thermal imidization, according to Flory's principle. On the contrary, thin films of insoluble poyimide chemically imidized keep the same levels of negative birefringence as those of the relevant polyamic acid thin films. Judging from the opposite cases, it is recognized that molecular relaxation above T-g weakens the optical anisotropy of polyimide thin films. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three organo-soluble polyimide powders have been synthesized. Their imidization was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The amorphous morphology of their thin films were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Polyimide thin films were prepared by solution casting or spin coating. UV-visible transmission spectra of thin films revealed that they are almost transparent in the range of visible light. With in-plane orientation, revealed by FTIR spectra, negative birefringence (Delta n) of thin films were observed, and refractive indices of the thin films along the film plane (n(TE)) and normal to the plane (n(TM)) were measured by a prism coupler. Because of negative birefringence of the thin films, they tan be substituted for the compensation films for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to extend their viewing angles. In this paper, a 90 degrees C TN-LCD and 120 degrees C TN-LCD were taken as examples to show the compensation effect of thin films of a qualified polyimide. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. Optical anisotropy of thin films of an organo-soluble flexible polyimide based on 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA) was detected by a prism-coupler technique. A mechanism is proposed, based on the model of gel film collapse. The degrees of optical anisotropy of the thin films were evaluated via the level of negative birefringence. The residual solvent in the films lessens the levels of negative birefringence so that the residual solvent must be evacuated. The levels of negative birefringence are independent on the solid content of the initial solution, but dependent on the thickness of the films. For a film of 16 mu m thick, zero birefringence was achieved, postulated from the dependence of negative birefringence on the thickness of thin films. The relationship between the optical anisotropy and solution properties shows that the degrees of optical anisotropy of thin films on the same scale of thickness depend on macromolecular sizes in their dilute solutions.

An organo-soluble polyimide was successfully synthesized by two step polycondensation accompanied with chemical imidization. Optical anisotropy of thin films was detected by a prism-coupler technique. The results showed that the optical anisotropic properties of thin films prepared from solutions in different solvents depend on the solution properties. It is concluded that the more expanded the chain conformation in solution, the larger the negative birefringence of thin films. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The changes in refractive indices (n(TE) and n(TM)) in a direction normal to the plane of thin films of an organo-soluble polyimide based on 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline were measured by a prism coupler. The results implied that the molecules near the substrate-polyimide interface were much ordered, while those near the polyimide-air interface were less ordered, judging from the variation in the level of negative birefringence with the depth of the films. The molecules are more condensed near the substrate surface, as seen by the average refractive index increasing from the polyimide-air interface to the substrate-polyimide interface, which implies that the condensed states of polyimide molecules change gradually in the depth direction. The disadvantages of NW-TN-LCD (normally white twisted nematic liquid crystal display) are discussed. The reason that the negative birefringent polyimide thin films are used to compensate NW-TN-LCD to decrease off-axis leakage, improve contrast ratios and enlarge viewing angeles is explained. A certain polyimide thin film is taken as an example to show the compensation effect on NW-TN-LCD. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

It is demonstrated that the electroactive species Fe~(2+) ion can transport easily through the thin films of vanadium hexacyanoferrate (VHF) to the underlaying glassy carbon (GC)electrode surface to be oxidized directly at less positive potential and that it can also be oxidized at the film at more positive potential through the media- tion of redox sites in the film. These two processes yield sequentially clearly distinguished first and second wave in stationary current-potential curves resulting...

In order to further investigate nanoindentation data of film-substrate systems and to learn more about the mechanical properties of nanometer film-substrate systems, two kinds of films on different substrate systems have been tested with a systematic variation in film thickness and substrate characteristics. The two kinds of films are aluminum and tungsten, which have been sputtered on to glass and silicon substrates, respectively. Indentation experiments were performed with a Nano Indent XP II with indenter displacements typically about two times the nominal film thicknesses. The resulting data are analyzed in terms of load-displacement curves and various comparative parameters, such as hardness, Young's modulus, unloading stiffness and elastic recovery. Hardness and Young's modulus are investigated when the substrate effects are considered. The results show how the composite hardness and Young's modulus are different for different substrates, different films and different film thicknesses. An assumption of constant Young's modulus is used for the film-substrate system, in which the film and substrate have similar Young's moduli. Composite hardness obtained by the Joslin and Oliver method is compared with the directly measured hardness obtained by the Oliver and Pharr method.

Essential work of fracture (EWF) analysis is used to study the effect of the silica doping level on fracture toughness of polyimide/silica (PI/SiO2) hybrid films. By using double-edge-notched-tension (DENT) specimens with different ligament lengths, it seems that the introduction of silica additive can improve the specific essential work of fracture (w (e) ) of PI thin films, but the specific non-essential work of fracture (beta w (p) ) will decease significantly as the silica doping level increasing from 1 to 5 wt.%, and even lower than that of neat PI. The failure process of the fracture is investigated with online scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation and the parameters of non-essential work of fracture, beta and w (p) , are calculated based on finite element (FE) method.

Three analytical double-parameter criteria based on a bending model and a two-dimensional finite element analysis model are presented for the modeling of ductile thin film undergoing a nonlinear peeling process. The bending model is based on different governing parameters: (1) the interfacial fracture toughness and the separation strength, (2) the interfacial fracture toughness and the crack tip slope angle, and (3) the interfacial fracture toughness and the critical Mises effective strain of the delaminated thin film at the crack tip. Thin film nonlinear peeling under steady-state condition is solved with the different governing parameters. In addition, the peeling test problem is simulated by using the elastic-plastic finite element analysis model. A critical assessment of the three analytical bending models is made by comparison of the bending model solutions with the finite element analysis model solutions. Furthermore, through analyses and comparisons for solutions based on both the bending model and the finite element analysis model, some connections between the bending model and the finite element analysis model are developed. Moreover, in the present research, the effect of different selections for cohesive zone shape on the ductile film peeling solutions is discussed.

Two types of peeling experiments are performed in the present research. One is for the Al film/Al2O3 substrate system with an adhesive layer between the film and the substrate. The other one is for the Cu film/Al2O3 substrate system without adhesive layer between the film and the substrate, and the Cu films are electroplated onto the Al2O3 substrates. For the case with adhesive layer, two kinds of adhesives are selected, which are all the mixtures of epoxy and polyimide with mass ratios 1:1.5 and 1:1, respectively. The relationships between energy release rate, the film thickness and the adhesive layer thickness are measured during the steady-state peeling process. The effects of the adhesive layer on the energy release rate are analyzed. Using the experimental results, several analytical criteria for the steady-state peeling based on the bending model and on the two-dimensional finite element analysis model are critically assessed. Through assessment of analytical models, we find that the cohesive zone criterion based on the beam bend model is suitable for a weak interface strength case and it describes a macroscale fracture process zone case, while the two-dimensional finite element model is effective to both the strong interface and weak interface, and it describes a small-scale fracture process zone case. Cobalt-doped ZnO (Zn1-xCoxO) thin films were fabricated by reactive magnetron cosputtering. The processing conditions were carefully designed to avoid the occurrence of Co precipitations. The films are c-axis oriented, and the solubility limit of Co in ZnO is less than 17%, determined by x-ray diffraction. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show Co ions have a chemical valance of 2+. In this paper, hysteresis loops were clearly observed for Zn1-xCoxO films at room temperature. The coercive field, as well as saturation magnetization per Co atom, decreases with increasing Co content, within the range of 0.07

Laser-induced well-ordered and controllable wavy patterns are constructed in the deposited metal thin film. The micrometer-sized structure and orientation of the wavy patterns can be controlled via scanning a different size of rectangle laser spot on the films. Ordered patterns such as aligned, crossed, and whirled wave structures were designed over large areas. This patterning technique may find applications in both exploring the reliability and mechanical properties of thin films, and fabricating microfluidic devices. The time response of optical switching properties of Sb thin films under focused laser pulses is investigated. The results show that the response course can be divided into onset, opening, and closing stages. Formulas for their lengths are given. The onset and opening times decrease with increasing pumping light power density. The closing time is about 150 ns. For optical memory, if the power density of the readout and recording lasers changes from 5 x 10(9) to 15 x 10(9) W/m(2), the onset time changes from 2.5 to 0.30 mus, and the opening time is on the nanosecond scale.
