Multilayer assemblies of silver doped ZnS colloid and polycation were fabricated by a self-assembly technique exploiting electrostatic interaction. UV/Vis spectra showed the uniform deposition process and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the coexistence of silver. It was found that the emission spectra of the silver doped ZnS colloid red-shifted to 528 nm comparing with undoped ZnS colloid. However, the most important finding was that the luminescence intensity of doped ZnS assembled in films was much stronger than that of undoped ZnS in films and that of doped ZnS in the spin-casting film. The mechanism of the enhancement luminescence was discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The compatibilizing effects of the compatibilizer, ethylene-acrylic acid random copolymer (EAA), on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends and the mechanism of compatibilization of the blends have been studied. Morphology and microstructures as characterized by SEM, DMA, DSC and IR show that EAA can act as an effective compatibilizer, and the mechanism of compatibilization is due to the compatibility of amorphous phases between EAA and LLDPE, and intermolecular interaction between the carboxylic groups in EAA. and the ethereal oxygens in PEG.

The interaction between horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and the cryo-hydrogel was probed by using hydrazines which show high specificity of the reaction of the edge in the prosthetic heme of horseradish peroxidase. For comparison, the interaction of hydrazine with the horseradish peroxidase adsorbed on graphite electrode was also carried out by using steady-state response of the enzyme electrode and cyclic voltammetry. In order to obtain a proper explanation of the kinetic parameters for the enzymatic reaction, the theoretical expressions of I-max and K-M' in the Michaelis-Menten equation for the experimental system were provided. The thermosetting polyimide PMR-I5 and its blends with thermoplastic polyimides have been studied by dynamic mechanical analysis. The results obtained indicate that the level of beta relaxations in PMR-15 are increased with an increase in cross-linking density. This phenomenon is interpreted as a change of chemical structure during the cross-linking process. Addition of thermoplastic polyimide makes the magnitude of beta relaxations increase when PMR-15 is the major component. This might be due to the strong intermolecular charge-transfer interaction between PI and PI or PMR-15 and PMR-15 molecular chains being partly replaced by the weak intermolecular interaction between PI and PMR-15 in PMR-15/PI blends, resulting in some phenylene rings or imide groups in PIs and PMR-15 chains being able to participate in beta relaxation. However, this increment in beta relaxation magnitude can be reduced by heat treatment of the sample, as a result of phase separation. Hence, it is concluded that the beta relaxation magnitude is determined by the number of groups which can participate in relaxation per unit length, i.e. the magnitude of beta relaxation increases with decreasing interaction between the molecular chains. The interaction of silica with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposomes has been studied by detecting H-1 and 2D NOESY NMR spectra and measuring proton spin-lattice relaxation time (T-1). The antagonistic effect of aluminium citrate on silica has also been studied by measuring the proton T-1 values, The results show that silica particles mainly bind to the phosphate moiety of the polar headgroup of DPPC bilayers through hydrogen bonds between Si-OH and O-P groups, but they have no significant effect on the conformation of the choline group of the polar headgroup, The addition of silica particles decreases the mobilities of the hydrocarbon chains slightly, Proton T-1 data also indicate that aluminium citrate reduces the effect of silica, A possible mechanism for the toxicity of silica and the antagonistic effect of aluminium titrate on silica is suggested. An extended Goldman-Shen pulse sequence was used to observe indirectly the proton spin diffusion in the blends of polystyrene (PS) with poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxides) (PPO). The results indicate that the average distance between PS and PPO is less than 5 angstrom in the intimately mixed phase, but there are heterogeneous domains on a 100-angstrom scale. The data of spin relaxation of carbons, T1(C), for homopolymers and their blends suggest that there is a strong pi-pi electron conjugation interaction between the aromatic rings of PS and those of PPO, while the aromatic rings of PPO drive the aromatic rings of PS to move cooperatively. It is the cooperative motion that markedly improves the impact strength of PS.

Thymidylate synthase (TS), which catalyzes the de novo synthesis of dUMP, is an important target for cancer therapy. In this report, the effects of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and ZD1694 on the regulation of TS gene expression were evaluated in zebrafish embryos. Our results revealed that the expression of TS was increased by about six-fold when embryos were treated with 1.0 mu M 5-FU and there was a greater than 10-fold increase in the TS protein level after treatment with 0.4 mu M ZD1694. Northern blot analysis confirmed that expression of TS mRNA was identical in treated or untreated embryos. Gel shift and immunoprecipitation assays revealed that zebrafish TS was specifically bound with its cognate mRNA in vitro and in vivo. We identified a 20 nt RNA sequence, TS:N20, localized to the 5'-UTR of TS mRNA, which corresponded to nt 13-32; TS:N20 bound to the TS protein with an affinity similar to that of the full-length TS mRNA. The MFold program predicted that TS:N20 formed a stable stem-loop structure similar to that of the cis-acting element found in human TS mRNA. Variant RNAs with either a deletion or mutation in the core motif of TS:N20 were unable to bind to the TS protein. In vitro translation experiments, using the rabbit lysate system, confirmed that zebrafish TS mRNA translation was significantly repressed when an excess amount of TS protein was included in the system. Additionally, a TS stability experiment confirmed that treatment of zebrafish embryos with 5-FU could increase the TS stability significantly, and the half life of TS protein was about 2.7 times longer than in untreated embryos. Our study revealed a structural requirement for the interaction of TS RNA with TS protein. These findings also demonstrated that the increase in TS protein induced by 5-FU occurs at the post-transcriptional level and that increased stability and translation efficiency both contributed to the increase in TS protein levels induced by TS inhibitors.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) that are around 22 nucleotides long non-protein-coding RNAs, play key regulatory roles in plants. Recent research findings show that miRNAs are involved in plant defense and viral offense systems. Advances in understanding the mechanism of miRNA biogenesis and evolution are useful for elucidating the complicated roles they play in viral infection networks. In this paper a brief summary of evolution of plant anti-virus defense is given and the function of miRNAs involved in plant-virus competition is highlighted. It is believed that miRNAs have several advantages over homology-dependent and siRNA-mediated gene silencing when they are applied biotechnologically to promote plant anti-virus defense. miRNA-mediated anti-virus pathway is an ancient mechanism with a promising future. However, using miRNAs as a powerful anti-virus tool will be better realized only if miRNA genomics and functions in plant viral infection are fully understood.

Based on the data analysis, this study further explores the characteristics of East Asian winter monsoon (hereafter, EAWM, for brevity) as well as the related air-sea-land system, and illustrates how and to what degree anomalous signals of the subsequent Asian summer monsoon are rooted in the preceding EAWM activity. We identified an important air-sea coupled mode, i.e., the EAWM mode illustrated in Section 3. In cold seasons, strong EAWM-related air-sea two-way interaction is responsible for the development and persistence of the SSTA pattern of EAWM mode. As a consequence, the key regions, i.e., the western Pacific and South China Sea (hereafter, SCS, for brevity), are dominated by such an SSTA pattern from the winter to the following summer. In the strong EAWM years, the deficient snow cover dominates eastern Tibetan Plateau in winter, and in spring, this anomaly pattern is further strengthened and extended to the northwestern side of Tibetan Plateau. Thus, the combined effect of strong EAWM-related SSTA and Tibetan snow cover constitutes an important factor in modulating the Asian monsoon circulation. The active role of the EAWM activity as well as the related air-sea-land interaction would, in the subsequent seasons, lead to: 1) the enhancement of SCS monsoon and related stronger rainfall; 2) the northward displacement of subtropical high during Meiyu period and the related deficient rainfall over Meiyu rainband; 3) above-normal precipitation over the regions from northern Japan to northeastern China in summer; 4) more rainfall over the Arabian Sea and Northeast India, while less rainfall over southwest India and the Bay of Bengal. The strong EAWM-related air-sea interaction shows, to some degree, precursory signals to the following Asian summer monsoon. However, the mechanism for the variability of Indian summer monsoon subsequent to the strong EAWM years remains uncertain.
