The reactions of freshly prepared Cu(OH)(2).xH(2)O and Cu(OH)(2-2y)(CO3)(y).zH(2)O precipitates with imidazole and adipic acid in CH3OH/H2O at pH = 5.4 yielded CU(C3N2H4)(2)(HL)(2) 1 and CU(C3N2H4)(2)L 2, respectively. Complex 1 consists of ribbon-like polymeric chains (1)(infinity)[CU(C3N2H4)(2)(HL)(4/2)], in which the octahedrally coordinated Cu atoms are doubly bridged by bis-monodentate hydrogen adipato ligands. The interchain N-H...O hydrogen bonding interactions are responsible for supramolecular assembly of the polymeric chains into open 3D frameworks and two-fold interpenetration of the resulting open frameworks completes the crystal structure of 1. Within complex 2, the Cu atoms are penta-coordinated to form CuN2O3 square pyramids and condensed into CU2N4O4 dimers, which are doubly bridged by twisted bis-monodentate adipato ligands into polymeric chains (1)(infinity)([CU(C3N2H4)(2)](2)L-4/2) with 4- and 18-membered rings progressing alternatively. The polymeric chains are assembled due to interchain N-H...O hydrogen bonding interactions. The thermal and magnetic behaviors of 1 and 2 is discussed.

Novel proton-conducting gelatinous electrolytes templated by room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-tetrafluoroborate (BMImBF(4)) have been prepared in methylsisesquioxane backbone containing H3PO4, and the influences of the RTIL on the structure, morphology, thermal stability, and electrochemical properties of the gelatinous electrolytes have been examined. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy proved that BMImBF(4) acted as structure-directing template during the sol-gel process of methyl-trimethoxysilane. X-ray photoelectron spectra and infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the hydrogen-bonding was formed between BMImBF(4) and H3PO4. The electrolytes had good thermal stability up to 300 degreesC and showed superior mechanical and electrochemical properties. A room-temperature conductivity of 1.2 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) was obtained for the electrolyte at the molar ratio of RTIL/Si/H3PO4 0.3/1/1, and its electrochemical window was up to 1.5 V.

We have followed the morphological evolution and crystallization process of spherical micelles formed by the mixture of polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) and polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine)b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) (the core of the spherical micelles was made of P2VP and PAA blocks through hydrogen bonding in neutral solvent N,N-dimethylformamide, DMF) via DMF vapor treatment. Different phenomena, such as rupture of the film, formation of cylinder aggregates and regular square lamellae, were observed when the micelle film was treated in DMF for different times. At the early stage of annealing in DMF vapor, the micelle film became unstable and ruptured. Cylinder aggregates, within which the PEO blocks achieved the association and primary chain folding, formed as the mesophases before the nucleation of the PEO single crystals at this stage. Further treatment in DMF vapor resulted in the nucleation of the PEO blocks at the corners of quasi-square lamellae. Then a quite regular "sandwich" lamellar structure, constructed by a PEO single-crystal layer covered by two tethered layers of other amorphous blocks on the top and bottom crystal basal surfaces, formed when the film of micelles was annealed in DMF vapor for sufficient times.

A polymeric supramolecule consisting of symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpytidine) (PS-b-P4VP), dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), and 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP) was formed by proton transfer and hydrogen bonding. The surface morphology,of a thin film of the polymeric supramolecule has been investigated. The spherical PS microdomains embedded in a P4VP(DBSA)(1.0)(PDP)(1.0) matrix are observed for the as-cast film because the weight fraction, f(comb), of the P4VP(DBSA) (1.0)(PDP)(1.0) blocks is much higher than that of PS as a result of the non-covalent interactions of P4VP and DBSA and DBSA and PDR Upon annealing the PS-b-P4VP(1:1)(DBSA)(1.0)(PDP)(1.0) film at high temperatures, the hydrogen bonding between the DBSA and PDP diminishes, which leads to a change of overall morphology from an ordered sphere to a pitted structure.

The polymeric films have been prepared based on blends of chitosan with two cellulose ethers-hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and methylcellulose by casting from acetic acid solutions. The films were transparent and brittle in a dry state but an immersion of the samples in deionized water for over 24 h leads to their disintegration or partial dissolution. The miscibility of the polymers in the blends has been assessed by infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. It was shown that although weak hydrogen bonding exists between the polymer functional groups the blends are not fully miscible in a dry state.

The spherical Lindquist type polyoxometalate, Mo6O192-, has been used as a noncoordinating anionic template for the construction of novel three-dimensional lanthanide-aromatic monocarboxylate dimer supramolecular networks [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)][Mo6O19] (Ln = La 1, Ce 2, and Eu 3, DNBA = 3,5-dinitrobenzoate, DMF = dimethylformamide). The title compounds are characterized by elemental analyses, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffractions. X-ray diffraction experiments reveal that two Ln(III) ions are bridged by four 3,5-dinitrobenzoate anions as asymmetrically bridging ligands, leading to dimeric cores, [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)](2+); [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)](2+) groups are joined together by pi-pi stacking interactions between the aromatic groups to form a two-dimensional grid-like network; the 2-D supramolecular layers are further extended into 3-D supramolecular networks with 1-D box-like channels by hydrogen-bonding interactions, in which hexamolybdate polyanions reside. The compounds represent the first examples of 3-D carboxylate-bridged lanthanide dimer supramolecular "host" networks formed by pi-pi stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions encapsulating noncoordinating "guest" polyoxoanion species. The fluorescent activity of compound 3 is reported.

Reactions of the Rh hydrido complex [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(EtOH)(2)]ClO4 (1) With nitrogen ligands such as 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (tbz). pyridazine (pdz), imidazole (im) and pyrimidine (pmd) in CH,Cl, afforded Various mononuclear Rh hydrido complexes, [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(tbz)]CIO4 (2), [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(pdZ)(2)]ClO(4)(.)2CH(2)Cl(2) (3). [Rh(H)Cl(PPh3)(2)(pdz)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (4). [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(im)(2)]ClO(4)(.)2CH(2)Cl(2) (5). [Rh(H)Cl(PPh3)(2)(im)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (6). [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(pmd)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (7) and the Rh non-hydrido complex [RhCl2(pmd)(4)]ClO4 (8). The Rh complexes 2. 3, 5 and 6 were crystallographically characterized. The formation process was monitored by H-1 NMR and UV-Vis spectra. In all the Rh hydrido complexes, the Rh atom is coordinated by two PPh3. ligands in trans-positions and two nitrogen ligands in the cis-positions. The remaining sites Lire occupied by one or two hydride atoms to form a saturated 18-electron framework in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. For complex 2 an appreciable inter-molecular pi interaction is observed between planes of tbz and PPh3 ligands, while an intra-molecular hydrogen bonding interaction between C-H and Cl atoms is found in complex 6.

A hybrid material with a conductive organic network in an inorganic matrix has been prepared by in-situ hydrolysis/polycondensation of TEOS in an aqueous solution of a solubilized polyaniline. Due to intense hydrogen bonding (indicated by Si-29 NMR and FTIR) the conductive polymer is very well dispersed in the silica matrix. The Figure shows SEM images of a 46/54 wt.-% hybrid at two temperatures (left 20 degreesC, right 100 degreesC).

The effect of adding diblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (P(S-b-4VPy), to immiscible blends of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) on the morphology, thermal transition, crystalline structure, and rheological and mechanical properties of the blends has been investigated. The diblock copolymer was synthesized by sequential anionic copolymerization and was melt-blended with sPS and TPU. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the added block copolymer reduced the domain size of the dispersed phase in the blends. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) revealed that the extent of compatibility between sPS and TPU affected the crystallization of the sPS in the blends. Tensile strength and elongation at break increased, while the dynamic modulus and complex viscosity decreased with the amount of P(S-b-4VPy) in the blend. The compatibilizing effect of the diblock copolymer is the result of its location at the interface between the sPS and the TPU phases and penetration of the blocks into the: corresponding phases, i.e. the polystyrene block enters the noncrystalline regions of the sPS, and the poly(4-vinylpyridine) block interacts with TPU through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The compatibilization effect of poly(styrene-b-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, P(S-b-EOx), on immiscible blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) is examined in terms of phase structure and thermal, rheological and mechanical properties, and its compatibilizing mechanism is investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The block copolymer, synthesized by a mechanism transformation copolymerization, is used in solution blending of PPO/EAA. Scanning electron micrographs show that the blends exhibit a more regular and finer dispersion on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). Thermal analysis indicates that the grass transition of PPO and the lower endothermic peal; of EAA components become closer on adding P(S-b-EOx), and the added diblock copolymer is mainly located at the interface between the PPO and EAA phases. The interfacial tension estimated by theological measurement is significantly reduced on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). The tensile strength and elongation at break increase with the addition of the diblock copolymer for PPO-rich blends, whereas the tensile strength increases but the elongation at break decreases for EAA-rich blends. This effect is interpreted in terms of interfacial activity and the reinforcing effect of the diblock copolymer, and it is concluded that the diblock copolymer plays a role as an effective compatibilizer for PPO/EAA blends. The specific interaction between EAA and polar parts of P(S-b-EOx) is mainly hydrogen bonding. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Four new polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of nicotinic acid N-oxide and isonicotinic acid N-oxide have been synthesized and structurally determined. In the isomorphous compounds [(Ln(L-1)(3) (H2O)(2))(n)]. 4nH(2)O(HL1 = nicotinic acid N-oxide; Ln = Eu, 1; Ln = Er, 2) the lanthanide(III) ions form infinite double chains along the b direction through the coordination of bridging carboxylate and N-oxide groups. The chains are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and uncoordinated N-oxide groups and between aqua ligands and lattice water molecules, to form a three-dimensional network. [(Eu(L-2)(2)-(H2O)(4))(n)](NO3)(n). nH(2)O (HL2 = isonicotinic acid N-oxide, 3) has a polymeric structure in which the europium (III) ions are connected into infinite chains by pairs of syn-syn carboxylate groups. Adjacent chains are interlinked by hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups to form a layer parallel to the (100) plane, and such layers are connected by hydrogen bonds between nitrate anions and aqua ligands, and between oxide groups and lattice water molecules, into a three-dimensional network. In [(Er-2(L-2)(4)(H2O)(10))](NO3)(2). H2O, 4, dinuclear units are inter-linked into a three-dimensional network through hydrogen bonding between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups of both bidentate bridging and unidentate L-2 ligands. Factors affecting the formation of coordination chains and dinuclear units are discussed. Luminescence properties of 1 and 3 have also been studied. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. The blends of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-beta-hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB-co-HV)/poly(p-vinylphenol)(PVPh) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy and high-resolution solid-state C-13 NMR techniques. Single glass transition temperatures existing in the whole composition range indicates that these blends are miscible. The presence of hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl of PVPh and carbonyl of P(HB-co-HV), shown by FT-IR spectra, is the origin of the miscibility. Furthermore, results obtained by high-resolution solid-state C-13 NMR give more information about the structure of the blends. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The poly(monoester (6-[4-(p-nitrophenyl) azo]phenoxy-1-hexyloxy) of maleic anhydride) shows a smectic phase with a focal conic fan texture. With the decrease of the monoestering degree the phase transition temperature decreases and the mesomorphic temperature range becomes narrow. The hydrogen bonding between two carboxylic acid groups was found to play a very important role in forming the smectic phase structure. The smectic bilayer structure has been built through self-assembly via. intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
