Transient flow patterns and bubble slug lengths in parallel microchannels with oxygen gas bubbles produced by catalytic chemical reactions

Transient flow patterns and bubble slug lengths were investigated with oxygen gas (O-2) bubbles produced by catalytic chemical reactions using a high speed camera bonded with a microscope. The microreactor consists of an inlet liquid plenum, nine parallel rectangular microchannels followed by a micronozzle, using the MEMS fabrication technique. The etched surface was deposited by the thin platinum film, which is acted as the catalyst. Experiments were performed with the inlet mass concentration of the hydrogen peroxide from 50% to 90% and the pressure drop across the silicon chip from 2.5 to 20.0 kPa. The silicon chip is directly exposed in the environment thus the heat released via the catalytic chemical reactions is dissipated into the environment and the experiment was performed at the room temperature level. It is found that the two-phase flow with the catalytic chemical reactions display the cyclic behavior. A full cycle consists of a short fresh liquid refilling stage, a liquid decomposition stage followed by the bubble slug flow stage. At the beginning of the bubble slug flow stage, the liquid slug number reaches maximum, while at the end of the bubble slug flow stage the liquid slugs are quickly flushed out of the microchannels. Two or three large bubbles are observed in the inlet liquid plenum, affecting the two-phase distributions in microchannels. The bubble slug lengths, cycle periods as well as the mass flow rates are analyzed with different mass concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and pressure drops. The bubble slug length is helpful for the selection of the future microreactor length ensuring the complete hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Future studies on the temperature effect on the transient two-phase flow with chemical reactions are recommended.

Scattering of linear water waves by a fixed and infinitely long rectangular structure parallel to a vertical wall in oblique seas

The scattering of linear water waves by an infinitely long rectangular structure parallel to a vertical wall in oblique seas is investigated. Analytical expressions for the diffracted potentials are derived using the method of separation of variables. The unknown coefficients in the expressions are determined through the application of the eigenfunction expansion matching method. The expressions for wave forces on the structure are given. The calculated results are compared with those obtained by the boundary element method. In addition, the influences of the wall, the angle of wave incidence, the width of the structure, and the distance between the structure and the wall on wave forces are discussed. The method presented here can be easily extended to the study of the diffraction of obliquely incident waves by multiple rectangular structures.

Dual-wavelength photochromic fulgides for parallel recording memory

Two photochromic fulgides, 2-{2-[4-(N,N-dimethylnilino)-5-methyl-4-oxazoly]}ethylidene-4-(1-methylethylidene) tetrahydrofuran-2,5-dione (A) and 3-(1,2-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-pyrolloethylidene)-4-(1-methylethylidene)tetrahydrofuran-2,5-dione (B), doped in PMMA as candidates of dual-wavelength optical memory for parallel recording has been investigated. With 488 nm-laser and 650 nm-laser, both "cross" and "star" images are recorded on the fulgides-PMMA film and read out clearly, respectively. Crosstalk between two fulgides in PMMA matrix and nondestructive readout has also been explored. The results show that no significant cross-talk is detected between them, and nondestructive readout is up to 201 times. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Experimental investigation of parallel optical data storage using pyrrylfulgide photochromic material

The optical storage characteristics of a new kind of organic photochromic material-pyrrylfulgide were experimentally investigated in the established parallel optical data storage system. Using the pyrrylfulgide/PMMA film as a photon-mode recording medium, micro-images and encoded binary digital data were recorded, readout and erased in this parallel system. The storage density currently reaches 3 x 10(7) bit/cm(2). The recorded information on the film can be kept for years in darkness at room temperature.

Synthesis and application on parallel image storage of bisfurylfulgide

A bisfurylfulgide, E, E-3,4-bis[1-(2,5-dimethyl-3-furyl)ethylidene]-3,4-dihydrofuran-2,5-dione, is synthesized by Stobbe condensation reaction. The molecular structure of target compound is confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography analysis. It shows that the distances between two possible reaction sites of molecule are 0.3394 and 0.3406 nm respectively, which is favorable to photocyclization. The photochromic properties of this compound in different solvents are investigated, and the result shows that the compound exhibits excellent photochromic behavior. The primary result of applied research on parallel image storage is also presented.

A High Speed, 12-Channel Parallel, Monolithic Integrated CMOS OEIC Receiver

The design and fabrication of a high speed, 12-channel monolithic integrated CMOS optoelectronic integrated circuit(OEIC) receiver are reported.Each channel of the receiver consists of a photodetector,a transimpedance amplifier,and a post-amplifier.The double photodiode structure speeds up the receiver but hinders responsivity.The adoption of active inductors in the TIA circuit extends the-3dB bandwidth to a higher level.The receiver has been realized in a CSMC 0.6μm standard CMOS process.The measured results show that a single channel of the receiver is able to work at bit rates of 0.8～1.4Gb/s. Altogether, the 12-channel OEIC receiver chip can be operated at 15Gb/s.

Block and parallel modelling of broad domain nonlinear continuous mapping based on NN

The necessity of the use of the block and parallel modeling of the nonlinear continuous mappings with NN is firstly expounded quantitatively. Then, a practical approach for the block and parallel modeling of the nonlinear continuous mappings with NN is proposed. Finally, an example indicating that the method raised in this paper can be realized by suitable existed software is given. The results of the experiment of the model discussed on the 3-D Mexican straw hat indicate that the block and parallel modeling based on NN is more precise and faster in computation than the direct ones and it is obviously a concrete example and the development of the large-scale general model established by Tu Xuyan.

High Speed VCSEL-Based Parallel Optical Transmission Modules

Design and fabrication of a parallel optical transmitter are reported. The optimized 12 channel parallel optical transmitter,with each channel＇s data rate up to 3Gbit/s,is designed, assembled, and measured. A top-emitting 850nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser（VCSEL） array is adopted as the light source,and the VCSEL chip is directly wire bonded to a 12 channel driver IC. The outputs of the VCSEL array are directly butt coupled into a 12 channel fiber array. Small form factor pluggable （SFP） packaging technology is used in the module to support hot pluggable in application. The performance results of the module are demonstrated. At an operating current of 8mA, an eye diagram at 3Gbit/s is achieved with an optical output of more than 1mW.

Parallel Fully-Implicit Computation of Magnetohydrodynamics Acceleration Experiments

A three-dimensional MHD solver is described in the paper. The solver simulates reacting flows with nonequilibrium between translational-rotational, vibrational and electron translational modes. The conservation equations are discretized with implicit time marching and the second-order modified Steger-Warming scheme, and the resulted linear system is solved iteratively with Newton-Krylov-Schwarz method that is implemented by PETS,: package. The results of convergence tests arc plotted, which show good scalability and convergence around twice faster when compared with the DPLR method. Then five test runs are conducted simulating the experiments done at the NASA Ames MHD channel, and the calculated pressures, temperatures, electrical conductivity, back EMF, load factors and flow accelerations are shown to agree with the experimental data. Our computation shows that the electrical conductivity distribution is not uniform in the powered section of the MHD channel, and that it is important to include Joule heating in order to calculate the correct conductivity and the MHD acceleration.

Parallel synthesis and herbicidal activity of pyrethroid library

A pyridine-containing pyrethroid library of 255 compounds was conveniently constructed using parallel synthesis. The library was screened by high through-put screening (HTs), and further study was focused on the compounds with initial bioactivities. The results suggest that some compounds could be potential herbicides.
