Tetralin hydrogenation (HYD) and thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) were studied for the supported MoS2 and WS2 sulfides, either non-promoted or promoted with Co and Ni. The supports used were ZrO2, alumina-stabilized TiO2 and pure alumina. Preparation of catalysts included presulfidation of non-promoted system with subsequent addition of promoter and resulfidation. It has been found that the nature of promoter plays determining role for the catalytic performance. The most active in both HYD and HDS reactions are Ni-promoted Mo and W catalysts, supported on ZrO2. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The mono- and bimetallic catalytic polymeric hollow-fiber reactors were established with catalytic polymeric cellulose acetate (CA) hollow fibers prepared by supporting the polymer-anchored mono- or bimetallic catalyst in/on the inner wall of the hollow fibers. The selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene to cyclopentene was efficiently carried out in the above catalytic polymeric hollow-fiber reactors, especially in the NaBH4 reduced bimetallic PVP-Pd-0.5Co/CA hollow-fiber reactor under mild conditions of 40 degrees C and 0.1 MPa. It was found that there was a remarkable synergic effect of palladium and cobalt reduced by NaBH4 in the bimetallic PVP-Pd-0.5Co/CA hollow-fiber reactor, which results in a 97.5% conversion of cyclopentadiene and a 98.4% selectivity for cyclopentene. Nanoporous VSB-5 nickel phosphate molecular sieves with relatively well controllable sizes and morphology of microspheres assembled from nanorods were synthesized at 140 degrees C over a short time in the presence of hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) by a facile hydrothermal method. The pH value, reaction time, and ratio of HMT to NaHPO2-H2O crucially influence the morphology and quality of the final products.

Three-dimensional (3D) macroporous Pt (MPPt) with highly open porous walls has been successfully synthesized using the hydrogen bubble dynamic template synthesis and galvanic replacement reaction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical methods were adopted to characterize their structures and properties.

This report describes the preparation of Pt-nanoparticle-coated gold-nanoporous film (PGNF) on a gold substrate via a simple "green" approach. The gold electrode that has been anodized under a high potential of 5 V is reduced by freshly prepared ascorbic acid (AA) solution to obtain gold nanoporous film electrode. Then the Pt nanoparticle is grown on the electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV).

Palladium nanoparticle-loaded carbon nanofibers (Pd/CNFs) were synthesized by the combination of electrospinning and thermal treatment processes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that spherical Pd nanoparticles (NPs) are well-dispersed on the surfaces of CNFs or embedded in CNFs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates that cubic phase of Pd was formed during the reduction and carbonization processes, and the presence of Pd NPs promoted the graphitization of CNFs. This nanocomposite material exhibited high electric conductivity and accelerated the electron transfer, as verified by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV).

A fullerene/ionic-liquid composite was explored. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) study showed that in the composite, C-60 mainly exists as nano-clusters, Raman spectrum proved that the composite formed only by physical Mix of C-60 and 1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIPF6), the combination did not change the chemical naturation of C-60. The electrochemical properties of the composite modified electrode, including the electrode reaction control function and the interfacial potential effect were studied.

Hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes (citral, 3-methyl-2-butenal, cinnamaldehyde) has been studied with tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) ruthenium dihydride (H2Ru(TPP)(4)) catalyst in a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/ compressed carbon dioxide biphasic system. The hydrogenation reaction was slow under PEG/ H-2 biphasic conditions at H-2 4 MPa in the absence of CO2. When the reaction mixture was pressurized by a non-reactant of CO2, however, the reaction was significantly accelerated.

The potential of CO2-expanded liquid media for chemical reactions has been examined in this work, using cyclohexane as a solvent and Pd/C as a heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation of styrene, citral, and nitrobenzene with H-2. The rate of hydrogenation reactions is increased, and the product selectivity is altered in the CO2-expanded cyclohexane phase. In the hydrogenation of citral, the selectivity to citronellal decreases with CO2 pressure, which changes from similar to 80% in the neat cyclohexane to similar to 65% at 16 MPa.

Hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB) to o-chloroaniline (o-CAN) with Pd/C has been investigated in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) at 308 K. The influences of several parameters such as CO2, H-2 pressures, Fd metal particle size and reaction time have been discussed. CO2 pressure presented markedly effects on the reaction rate and product selectivity under the reaction conditions used, the selectivity to o-CAN at CO2 pressure from 8 to 13 MPa (supercritical region) was larger than that at CO2 pressure below 6 MPa (subcritical region).

A catalyst of Rh nanoparticles supported on a carbon nanofiber, 5 wt.% Rh/CNF, with an average size of 2-3 nm has been prepared by a method of incipient wetness impregnation. The catalyst presented a high activity in the ring hydrogenation of phenol in a medium of supercritical CO2 (scCO(2)) at a low temperature of 323 K. The presence of compressed CO2 retards hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol under the reaction conditions used, and this is beneficial for the formation of cyclohexanone, increasing the selectivity to cyclohexanone.

The selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) was investigated using rice husk-based porous carbon (RHCs) supported platinum catalysts in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2). The effects of surface chemistry treatment of the support and the reaction phase behavior have been examined. The Pt/H-RHCs (HNO3-pretreated) was more active for CAL hydrogenation compared with Pt/NH3 - RHCs (NH3 center dot H2O-pretreated). The Pt/RHCs catalyst exhibited a higher selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) compared with commercial catalyst of Pt/C, which is relative to the micro - mesoporosity structure of the RHCs.

A hybrid material based on Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was fabricated with the assistance of PEI and formic acid. The cationic polyelectrolyte PEI not only favored the homogenous dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in water, but also provided sites for the adsorption of anionic ions PtCl42- on the MWNTs' sidewalls. Deposition of Pt NPs on the MWNTs' sidewalls was realized by in situ chemical reduction of anionic ions PtCl42- with formic acid. The hybrid material was characterized with TEM, XRD and XPS. Its excellent electrocatalytic activity towards both oxygen reduction in acid media and dopamine redox was also discussed.
