The localized shear deformation in the 2024 and 2124 Al matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles was investigated with a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) at a strain rate of about 2.0x10(3) s(-1). The results showed that the occurrence of localized shear deformation is sensitive to the size of SiC particles. It was found that the critical strain, at which the shear localization occurs, strongly depends on the size and volume fraction of SiC particles. The smaller the particle size, the lower the critical strain required for the shear localization. TEM examinations revealed that Al/SiCp interfaces are the main sources of dislocations. The dislocation density near the interface was found to be high and it decreases with the distance from the particles. The Al matrix in shear bands was highly deformed and severely elongated at low angle boundaries. The Al/SiCp interfaces, particularly the sharp corners of SiC particles, provide the sites for microcrack initiation. Eventual fracture is caused by the growth and coalescence of microcracks along the shear bands. It is proposed that the distortion free equiaxed grains with low dislocation density observed in the center of shear band result from recrystallization during dynamic deformation.

The dependence of microstructure and thermal stability on Fe content of bulk Nd60Al10Ni10Cu20-xFex (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 20) metallic glasses is investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron micrograph (HRTEM). All samples exhibit typical amorphous feature under the detect limit of XRD, however, HRTEM results show that the microstructure of Nd60Al10Ni10Cu20-xFex alloys changes from a homogeneous amorphous phase to a composite structure consisting of clusters dispersed in amorphous matrix by increasing Fe content. Dynamic mechanical properties of these alloys with controllable microstructure are studied, expressed via storage modulus, the loss modulus and the mechanical damping. The results reveal that the storage modulus of the alloy without Fe added shows a distinct decrease due to the main a relaxation. This decrease weakens and begins at a higher temperature with increasing Fe content. The mechanism of the effect of Fe addition on the microstructure and thermal stability in this system is discussed in terms of thermodynamics viewpoints. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The singular nature of the dynamic stress fields around an interface crack located between two dissimilar isotropic linearly viscoelastic bodies is studied. A harmonic load is imposed on the surfaces of the interface crack. The dynamic stress fields around the crack are obtained by solving a set of simultaneous singular integral equations in terms of the normal and tangent crack dislocation densities. The singularity of the dynamic stress fields near the crack tips is embodied in the fundamental solutions of the singular integral equations. The investigation of the fundamental solutions indicates that the singularity and oscillation indices of the stress fields are both dependent upon the material constants and the frequency of the harmonic load. This observation is different from the well-known -1/2 oscillating singularity for elastic bi-materials. The explanation for the differences between viscoelastic and elastic bi-materials can be given by the additional viscosity mismatch in the case of viscoelastic bi-materials. As an example, the standard linear solid model of a viscoelastic material is used. The effects of the frequency and the material constants (short-term modulus, long-term modulus and relaxation time) on the singularity and the oscillation indices are studied numerically.

Centrifugal experiments were carried out to investigate the responses of suction bucket foundations under horizontal and vertical dynamic loading. It is shown that when the loading amplitude is over a critical value, the sand at the upper part around the bucket is softened or even liquefied. The excess pore pressure decreases from the upper part to the lower part of the sand layer in the vertical direction and decreases radially from the bucket's side wall in the horizontal direction. Large settlements of the bucket and the sand layer around the bucket are induced by dynamic loading. The dynamic responses of the bucket with smaller height (the same diameter) are heavier.

In virtue of reference Cartesian coordinates, geometrical relations of spatial curved structure are presented in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. Dynamic equations for helical girder are derived by Hamilton principle. These equations indicate that four generalized displacements are coupled with each other. When spatial structure degenerates into planar curvilinear structure, two generalized displacements in two perpendicular planes are coupled with each other. Dynamic equations for arbitrary curvilinear structure may be obtained by the method used in this paper.

A dynamic coupling model is developed for a hybrid atomistic-continuum computation in micro- and nano-fluidics. In the hybrid atomistic-continuum computation, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is utilized in one region where the continuum assumption breaks down and the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are used in another region where the continuum assumption holds. In the overlapping part of these two regions, a constrained particle dynamics is needed to couple the MD simulation and the NS equations. The currently existing coupling models for the constrained particle dynamics have a coupling parameter, which has to be empirically determined. In the present work, a novel dynamic coupling model is introduced where the coupling parameter can be calculated as the computation progresses rather than inputing a priori. The dynamic coupling model is based on the momentum constraint and exhibits a correct relaxation rate. The results from the hybrid simulation on the Couette flow and the Stokes flow are in good agreement with the data from the full MD simulation and the solutions of the NS equations, respectively. Based on the dynamic governing equation of propagating buckle on a beam on a nonlinear elastic foundation, this paper deals with an important problem of buckle arrest by combining the FEM with a time integration technique. A new conclusion completely different from that by the quasi-static analysis about the buckle arrestor design is drawn. This shows that the inertia of the beam cannot be ignored in the analysis under consideration, especially when the buckle propagation is suddenly stopped by the arrestors.

Based on the principle given in nonlinear diffusion-reaction dynamics, a new dynamic model for dislocation patterning is proposed by introducing a relaxation time to the relation between dislocation density and dislocation flux. The so-called chemical potential like quantities, which appear in the model can be derived from variation principle for free energy functional of dislocated media, where the free energy density function is expressed in terms of not only the dislocation density itself but also their spatial gradients. The Linear stability analysis on the governing equations of a simple dislocation density shows that there exists an intrinsic wave number leading to bifurcation of space structure of dislocation density. At the same time, the numerical results also demonstrate the coexistence and transition between different dislocation patterns.

The generalized Shmuely Difference Algorithm (GSDA) is presented here to analyze the dynamic fracture performance of orthogonal-anisotropic composite materials, such as glass fibre reinforced phenolplast. The difference recurrence Formulae and boundary condition difference extrapolation formulae are derived and programmed. The dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIF) of the isotropic and anisotropic centrally cracked plates are computed respectively using GSDA and compared with that published previously. GSDA is proved effective and reliable. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

In this paper, by use of the boundary integral equation method and the techniques of Green basic solution and singularity analysis, the dynamic problem of antiplane is investigated. The problem is reduced to solving a Cauchy singular integral equation in Laplace transform space. This equation is strictly proved to be equivalent to the dual integral equations obtained by Sih [Mechanics of Fracture, Vol. 4. Noordhoff, Leyden (1977)]. On this basis, the dynamic influence between two parallel cracks is also investigated. By use of the high precision numerical method for the singular integral equation and Laplace numerical inversion, the dynamic stress intensity factors of several typical problems are calculated in this paper. The related numerical results are compared to be consistent with those of Sih. It shows that the method of this paper is successful and can be used to solve more complicated problems. In this paper, a dynamic damage model in ductile solids under the application of a dynamic mean tensile stress is developed. The proposed model considers void nucleation and growth as parts of the damage process under intense dynamic loading (strain rates epsilon greater than or equal to 10(3) s(-1)). The evolution equation of the ductile void has the closed form, in which work-hardening behavior, rate-dependent contribution and inertial effects are taken into account. Meanwhile, a plate impact test is performed for simulating the dynamic fracture process in LY12 aluminum alloy. The damage model is incorporated in a hydrodynamic computer code, to simulate the first few stress reverberations in the target as it spalls and postimpact porosity in the specimen. Fair agreement between computed and experimental results is obtained. Numerical analysis shows that the influence of inertial resistance on the initial void growth in the case of high loading rate can not be neglected. It is also indicated that the dynamic growth of voids is highly sensitive to the strain rates.
Influence of inertial and thermal effects on the dynamic growth of voids in porous ductile materials
Resumo:
The influence of inertial, thermal and rate - sensitive effects on the void growth at high strain rate in a thermal - viscoplastic solid is investigated by means of a theoretical model presented in the present paper. Numerical analysis of the model suggests that inertial, thermal and rate - sensitive effects are three major factors which greatly influence the behavior of void growth in the high strain rate case. Comparison of the mathematical model proposed in the present work and Johnson's model shows that if the temperature - dependence is considered, material viscosity eta can take the experimentally measured values.

In this paper, a mathematical model of dynamic fracture in porous ductile materials under intense dynamic general loading is developed. The mathematical model includes the influence of inertial effects and material rate sensitivity, as well as the contribution of surface energy of a void and material work-hardening. In addition, the condition of the void compaction is considered as well. The threshold stresses for the void growth and compaction are obtained. A simple criterion for ductile fracture which is associated with material distention and plastic deformation is adopted. As an application of the theoretical model, the processes of two-dimensional spallation in LY12 aluminum alloy are successfully simulated by means of two-dimensional finite-difference Lagrangian code.
