Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) containing 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl units in the main chain were prepared by polycondensation reactions of newly synthesized dianhydride, 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxylzenzamido)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride[(S)-BN-DADA and (+/-)-BNDADA], with diamines, The properties of the resulted PAIs were fully characterized by a combination of investigations on inherent viscosity, thermal properties(DSC and TGA), specific rotation, CD and UV-Vis absorbance. These PAIs showed good solubilities, thermal properties and optical stabilities. Interesting UV-Vis absorption behavior of films casted from these PAIs was observed and analyzed.

Novel poly(amide imide)s (PAI) containing alkyl-substituted cyclohexylidene moieties were synthesized by conventional polycondensation of trimellitic anhydride chloride with novel aromatic diamines followed by chemical imidization using acetic anhydride and pyridine. The inherent viscosities of the resulting PAIs are relatively high and range from 71 to 112 mt g(-1). The prepared PAIs show excellent thermal stability and good solubility. The glass transition temperatures (T-g) measured by DSC are observed in the range of 312-342 degrees C. Furthermore, all the polymers are readily soluble in less hygroscopic organic solvents like cyclohexanone, gamma-butyrolactone as well as aprotic polar solvents.

Isothermal crystallization and melting behavior of nylon 66 and its blends with poly(ether imide) (PEI) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Crystallization kinetics such as overall rate constant Z and index n were calculated according to Avrami approach. Crystallization in the blend was retarded with respect to that of pure nylon 66 by incorporation of PEI with high glass transition temperature (T-g). The lowest growth rate of the spherulites was observed in the blends containing 10 and 15 wt% fraction of PEI. A transition temperature where positively birefringent spherulites disappear and negative birefringent spherulites develop was measured by thermal analysis. The transition temperature increased with content of PEI in the blends. A suitable range of isothermally crystallization temperatures, 238.5-246 degrees C, is suggested For determining the equilibrium melting points by means of Hoffman-Weeks approach.

Para-para linked aromatic poly(amic ester) precursors of rodlike polyimide (PI) BPDA-PDA and polyetherimide (PEI) HQDPA-ODA were synthesized. The para-para linked poly(amic ester)s were employed in this work to obtain, in theory, full-imidized polyimides. The two precursors were mixed by dissolving them in N, N'-dimethyl acetamide and subsequently coagulating in methanol. After thermal imidization, the miscibility behaviour of the resulting composites has been studied by means of dynamic mechanical analysis (d.m.a.) and differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.). The composites show a single glass transition temperature (T-g) at both d.m.a. and d.s.c. in which the T-g increases with increasing PI content. These Tg values are reproducible in repeated heating cycles, suggesting the true miscibility of the blends. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The polycrystalline powder of para- and meta-dimethyl ester of pyromellitic acid (PMDE) have been prepared by fractional crystallization, and their crystal structures have been determined by Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD). Both p-PMDE and m-PMDE was found to be orthorhombic crystal system, and their unit cell parameters a = 0.840 nm, b = 0.707 nm, c = 1.136 nm and a = 1.032 nm; b = 0.835 nm, c = 0.714 nm, respectively. Space group all belongs to P-mmm. p-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.388 g . cm(-3), while m-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.522 g . cm(-3). Indices of crystal diffraction peaks are also detailed in the present work. The difference in crystal structures between p-PMDE and m-PMDE has thus been used to explain the curing behavior of isomerically pyromellitic dianhydride-based poly(amic ester)s.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of poly(amic methyl ester)s from five aromatic dianhydrides and a diamine, 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA), are described. These poly(amic ester)s are obtained by the low-temperature polycondensation from dianhydrides derived diester-diacyl chlorides and ODA in DMAc solution with the inherent viscosities in the 0.5-0.9 dL/g range. These precursors are readily soluble in aprotic solvents. A detailed thermal study of the imidization process is presented, based on dynamic and isothermal TGA measurements, FTIR spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The morphology and dynamic mechanical properties of blends of poly(ether imide) (PEI) and nylon 66 over the full composition range have been investigated. Torque changes during mixing were also measured. Lower torque values than those calculated by the log-additivity rule were obtained, resulting from the slip at the interface due to low interaction between the components. The particle size of the dispersed phase and morphology of the blends were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The composition of each phase was calculated. The blends of PEI and nylon 66 showed phase-separated structures with small spherical domains of 0.3 similar to 0.7 mu m. The glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) of the blends were shifted inward, compared with those of the homopolymers, which implied that the blends were partially miscible over a range of compositions. T-g1, corresponding to PEI-rich phase, was less affected by composition than T-g2, corresponding to nylon 66-rich phase. This indicated that the fraction of PEI mixed into nylon 66-rich phase increased with decreasing PEI content and that nylon 66 was rarely mixed into the PEI-rich phase. The effect of composition on the secondary relaxations was examined. Both T-beta, corresponding to the motion of amide groups in nylon 66, and T-gamma, corresponding to that of ether groups in PEI, were shifted to higher temperature, probably because of the formation of intermolecular interactions between the components.

Influence of ester group size in polymethacrylates (PMAs) , including PMMA, PEMA and PBMA, on beta phase crystallization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) in highly oriented films of PVF2/PMAs=80/20 blends has been investigated by FTIR and TEM. The melt-drawn films of pure PVF2 consist of highly oriented lamellae, in which the alpha phase is predominant. Adding a given amount of PMAs (20 wt%) into PVF2 results in formation of fibrillar crystals and increase of relative amount of the beta phase. The influence extent is in order of PMMA > PEMA > PBMA, regarding the ester group size in the PMAs.

Blends of poly(ether sulphone) (PES) with a poly(ether imide) (PEI) in various proportions were prepared by the coprecipitation method. Mechanical properties and morphology of the blends were studied using tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The tensile moduli exhibit positive deviations from simple additivity. Marked positive deviations were also observed for ultimate strength. These results suggest that the PEI/PES blends are mechanically compatible. SEM study revealed that the blends are not homogeneous and the polymers are immiscible on the segmental level. However, the dispersions of the blends are rather fine. The interfaces between the two phases are excellently bonded; PEI and PES appear to interact well.

Blends of phenolphthalein poly(ether ether ketone) (PEK-C) with a poly(ether imide) (PEI) in various proportions were prepared by the coprecipitation method. Mechanical properties and morphology of the blends were studied using tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the tensile moduli exhibit positive deviations from simple additivity. Marked positive deviations were also observed for ultimate strength. These results suggest that the PEI/PEK-C blends are mechanically compatible. SEM study shows no evidence of phase separation, supporting the idea that the blends are compatible.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine (N2H4) on a glassy carbon electrode (GC) modified by monolayer and polymer films of cobalt protoporphyrin dimethyl ester (CoPP) has been studied. Both the monolayer and polymer films of CoPP are very active to the anodic oxidation of N2H4. The activity of CoPP for the anodic oxidation of N2H4 is dependent on the pH of the solution, and the thickness of polymerized CoPP film. The oxidation kinetics were examined by methods of cyclic voltammetry, rotating disc electrodes and steady-state polarization measurement.
