The electronic structures in the hierarchical self-assembly of GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum dots are investigated theoretically in the framework of effective-mass envelope function theory. The electron and hole energy levels and optical transition energies are calculated. In our calculation, the effect of finite offset, valence-band mixing, the effects due to the different effective masses of electrons and holes in different regions, and the real quantum dot structures are all taken into account. The results show that (1) electronic energy levels decrease monotonically, and the energy difference between the energy levels increases as the GaAs quantum dot (QD) height increases; (2) strong state mixing is found between the different energy levels as the GaAs QD width changes; (3) the hole energy levels decrease more quickly than those of the electrons as the GaAs QD size increases; (4) in excited states, the hole energy levels are closer to each other than the electron ones; (5) the first heavy- and light-hole transition energies are very close. Our theoretical results agree well with the available experimental data. Our calculated results are useful for the application of the hierarchical self-assembly of GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum dots to photoelectric devices.

A direct ion beam deposition system designed for heteroepitaxy at a low substrate temperature and for the growth of metastable compounds has been constructed and tested. The system consists of two mass-resolved low-energy ion beams which merge at the target with an incident energy range 50-25 000 eV. Each ion beam uses a Freeman ion source for ion production and a magnetic sector for mass filtering. While a magnetic quadrupole lens is used in one beam for ion optics, an electrostatic quadrupole lens focuses the other beam. Both focusing approaches provide a current density more than 100-mu-A/cm2, although the magnetic quadrupole gives a better performance for ion energies below 200 eV. The typical current of each beam reaches more than 0.3 mA at 100 eV, with a ribbon beam of about 0.3-0.5 x 2 cm2. The target is housed in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber with a base pressure of 1 x 10(-7) Pa and a typical pressure of 5 x 10(-6) Pa when a noncondensable beam like argon is brought into the chamber. During deposition, the target can be heated to 800-degrees-C and scanned mechanically with an electronic scanning control unit. The dual beam system has been used to grow GaN using a Ga+ and a N+ beam, and to study the oxygen and hydrogen ion beam bombardment effects during carbon ion beam deposition. The results showed that the simultaneous arrival of two beams at the target is particularly useful in compound formation and in elucidation of growth mechanisms.

After the excavation of Jinping underground cavern, a strong expansion appears along the unloading direction of the rock mass, mainly in the type of tensile rupture, accompanied by shear destruction, unloading resulted in significant deterioration of mechanical properties of rock. Based on the in-site investigation of rock mass structure, via analyzing the acoustic testing data, we identify the unloading range of the side walls and the division of rock types, and carry out with the solution of rock mechanical parameters about different unloading zone, providing geological foundation for the supporting design of the following design of the side walls, at the same time, providing reference for the selection of mechanical parameters of other underground excavation engineering with similar geological conditions.

In the concept of dinuclear system, the quasifission rate from Kramers formula has been incorporated in the master equation in order to study the competition between fusion and qusifission. Mass yields of quasifission products of the three reactions Ca-48 + Pu-244, Ca-48 + U-238 and Fe-58 + Th-232 have been calculated, and the experimental data are reproduced very well, which is a critical test for the existing fusion model. Also we have shown the time evolution of the mass distributions of quasifission products, which provides valuable information of the process of competition between fusion and quasifission.

The multi-photon dissociative photoionization dynamics of CF3I has been studied with femtosecond two-color pump-probe time-of-flight mass spectra at a pump pulse of 265 nm and a probe pulse of 398 nn. This enables the A band and 5ppi(3)7ssigma((2)Pi(1/2)) Rydberg state to be accessed with the pump beam. The observed fast and slow decay components of CF3+ and I+ reflect the fast repulsive A band and some higher lying ion-pair states may be responsible for the decay of the 5ppi(3)7ssigma((2)Pi(1/2)) Rydberg state. The results provide information on the different multi-photon pathways producing these ions and the de-excitation mechanism of the 5ppi(3)7ssigma((2)Pi(1/2)) Rydberg state. Monodispersed polyaniline oligomers was studied by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), It is found that MALDI-TOF-MS is not only a direct, accurate and rapid tool for the analysis of monodispersed polyaniline oligomers, but also a useful technique for the design of synthetic route.

Single-colour and two-colour multiphoton resonant ionization spectra of uranium atom were studied extensively with a Nd: YAG laser-pumped dye laser atomic beam apparatus time-of-flight mass spectrometer in our laboratory. The energy locations of high-lying odd-parity levels in the region 33 003-34 264 cm(-1),mearured by a two-colour three-step ionization technique, were reported here. The angular momentum quantum number J was uniquely assigned for these levels by using angular momentum selection rules.

Combination of affinity extraction procedures with mass spectrometric analyses is termed affinity-directed mass spectrometry, a technique that has gained broad interest in immunology and is extended here with several improvements from methods used in previous studies. A monoclonal antibody was immobilized on a nitrocellulose (NC) membrane, allowing the corresponding antigen to be selectively captured from a complex solution for analysis by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS). This method was also used to rapidly determine the approximate binding region responsible for the antibody/antigen interaction. The tryptic fragments of antigen protein in buffer were applied to the antibody immobilized on NC film and allowed to interact. The NC film was then washed to remove salts and other unbound components, and subjected to analysis by MALDI-TOFMS. Using interferon-alpha (2a) and anti-interferon-alpha (2a) monoclonal antibody IgG as a model system, we successfully extracted the antigen protein and determined the approximate binding region for the antigen/antibody interaction (i.e., the tryptic fragment responsible). It is reported that two kinds of specific mass spectrometric fragmentations are generated from dissociations of the intermediates of both the ion-neutral complex and the proton-bound complex. Collision-induced dissociation, isotopic labelling, and semi-empirical AM1 calculations were used to investigate the formation mechanism of the ion of m/z 139 from ionized tetrahydroimidazole-substituted methylene beta-diketones and the unimolecular fragmentations pathway of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol upon electron impact.

In the present paper a study of C-19-diterpene type of aconitum alkaloids, extracted from aconite roots in Aconitum carmichaeli Debx has been made using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of Eight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS), The results demonstrated that the aconitum alkaloids from aconite roots can be determined simultaneously by this method, which was found to be superior to other analytical methods with regard to speed and sensitivity. Fourteen known aconitum alkaloids, including aconitines, benzoylaconitines and lipoaconitines, were assigned in the methanol extract and three compounds not reported before have been targeted separation. The evaluation of the efficiency of different extractions has been studied. These results suggested that the differences of the polarity and basicity of aconitine, and benzoylaconitines and lipoaconitines result from the C-8 constituent groups that are easily lost under MALDI, (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
