In order to explore new highly organic electroluminescent materials, six symmetrical aromatic oxide-oxadiazoles containing pyridine ring 4a similar to 4f were synthesized through cyclization of substituted benzoic acid (2) with 2,6-dihydrazide pyridine (3) by "one-pot" method in POCl3. Their structures were confirmed by MS, IR, H-1 NMR techniques and elemental analysis. The fluorescence spectra of the target compounds showed that the A,m ranged from 347 to 507 nm, and the maximum A,m were close to 384 nm, which showed that these compounds have good fluorescence with strong fluorescence intensity. When the 5-Br group was introduced into the aromatic ring (4e and 4f), the fluorescent emission wavelength took place Einstein shift, and the fluorescent intensity decreased a little. Using quinine bisulphate as a reference, the fluorescence quantum yields were all tested, and the introduction of 5-Br group had no visible effect on fluorescence quantum yield.

The ring-banded spherulites in liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) (LC-PAEK) and poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) blends with a higher content (>50%) of LC-PAEK are investigated by polarizing light microscopy (PLM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The results indicate that the light core and rings of the ring-banded spherulites under PLM are mainly composed of an LC-PAEK phase, while the dark rings consist of coexisting phases of PEEK and a small amount of LC-PAEK. The formation of the ring-banded spherulites is attributable to structural discontinuity caused by a rhythmic radial growth.

Competition dialysis was used to study the interactions of 13 substituted aromatic diamidine compounds with 13 nucleic acid structures and sequences. The results show a striking selectivity of these compounds for the triplex structure poly dA:(poly dT)(2), a novel aspect of their interaction with nucleic acids not previously described. The triplex selectivity of selected compounds was confirmed by thermal denaturation studies. Triplex selectivity was found to be modulated by the location of amidine substiuents on the core phenyl-furan-phenyl ring scaffold. Molecular models were constructed to rationalize the triplex selectivity of DB359, the most selective compound in the series. Its triplex selectivity was found to arise from optimal ring stacking on base triplets, along with proper positioning of its amidine substituents to occupy the minor and the major-minor grooves of the triplex. New insights into the molecular recognition of nucleic acid structures emerged from these studies, adding to the list of available design principles for selectively targeting DNA and RNA.

A new kind of aromatic diaminospirodilactone, i.e. 6,6'-diamino-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide, was synthesized through multistep reactions from p-nitrotoulene and paraformaldehyde, It was: found that dinitrospirolactone could be synthesized directly in the acid system through oxidation reaction with a high yield, The increase of solvent polarity leads to an increase of reduction yield of dinitrolactone. The resulting intermediates 6, 6'-dihydroxylamino-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide and 6-amino-6'-hydroxylanimo-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide were steady aromatic hydroxylamine. The structures of 6, 6'-diamino-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide and its intermediates were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, MS, IR and elemental analyses.

Water insoluble poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) was micronized into narrowly distributed stable nanoparticles. The biodegradation of such PCL nanoparticles in the presence of the enzyme, Lipase PS, was monitored by using laser light scattering because the scattering intensity is directly related to the particle concentration. The PCL and enzyme concentration dependence of the biodegradation rate supports a heterogeneous catalytic kinetics in which we have introduced an additional equilibrium between the inactive and active enzyme/substrate complexes. The initial rate equation derived on the basis of this mechanism was used to successfully explain the influence of surfactant, pH and temperature on the enzymatic biodegradation. Our results confirmed that both the adsorption and the enzymatic catalysis were important for the biodegradation of the PCL nanoparticles. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

4-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride, prepared from 4-chlorophthalic anhydride, was reacted with trimellitic anhydride monoacid chloride or arylene diacid chloride to give aromatic ester-containing dianhydrides (EDAs). These dianhydrides were characterized by element analysis, melt point, FTIR and H-1-NMR. A series of aromatic poly (amic ester acid)s was synthesized by polycondensation of these EDAs and various diamines in polar organic solvent. The inherent viscosity of poly (amic ester acid)s ranged from 0.55 to 0.89 dL/g, indicating the intermediate to higher molecular weight. Polyesterimides having glass transition temperatures between 184-219degreesC were produced by thermal imidization of corresponding poly (amic ester acid)s. These polymers were fairly resistant to organic solvent, but some of them were soluble in phenol solvents. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed that these polyesterimides were stable up to 400degreesC, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 432-483degreesC in air atmosphers and 451-490degreesC in nitrogen.

2,2,'3,3' -Biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2,'3,3'-BPDA) was prepared by a coupling reaction of dimethyl 3-iodophthalate. The X-ray single-crystal structure determination showed that this dianhydride had a bent and noncopolanar structure, presenting a striking contrast to its isomer, 3,3,'4,4'-BPDA. This dianhydride was reacted with aromatic diamines in a polar aprotic solvent such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) to form polyamic acid intermediates, which imidized chemically to polyimides with inherent viscosities of 0.34-0.55 dL/g, depending on the diamine used. The polyimides from 2,2,'3,3'-BPDA exhibited a good solubility and were dissolved in polar aprotic solvents and polychlorocarbons. These polyimides have high glass transition temperatures above 283 degrees C. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that these polyimides were fairly stable up to 500 degrees C, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 534-583 degrees C in nitrogen atmosphere and 537-561 degrees C in air atmosphere. All polyimides were amorphous according to X-ray determination. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Synthesis of aromatic polyimides in DMAc containing large amount of water and the properties thereof
Resumo:
A series of polyamic acids were prepared in N,N-dimethylactamide (DMAc) containing large amount of water, some of which contain the amount of water up to 25%. Their inherent viscosities decreased with the increase of water in DMAc, depending on the electronic properties of dianhydride and reaction condition. The molecular weights and mechanical properties of the polyimides thermally imidized from the polyamic acids were almost independent on the water content in solvent. The decomposition-resynthesis of polyamic acids during the curing was also investigated.

A successful micronization of water-insoluble poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) into narrowly distributed nanoparticles stable in water has not only enabled us to study the enzymatic biodegradation of PCL in water at 25 degrees C by a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS), but also to shorten the biodegradation time by a factor of more than 10(3) compared with using a thin PCL film, i.e. a 1 week conventional experiment becomes a 4 min one. The time-average scattering intensity decreased linearly. It was interesting to find that the decrease of the scattering intensity was not accompanied by a decrease of the average size of the PCL nanoparticles, indicating that the enzyme, Lipase Pseudomonas (PS), ''eats'' the PCL nanoparticles one-by-one, so that the biodegradation rate is determined mainly by the: enzyme concentration. Moreover, we found that using anionic sodium lauryl sulphate instead of cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactant in the micronization can prevent the biodegradation, suggesting that the biodegradation involves two essential steps: the adsorption of slightly negatively charged Lipase PS onto the PCL nanoparticles and the interaction between Lipase PS and PCL. The surface of aromatic polyamide reverse osmosis composite membrane was modified by oxygen and argon plasma. The water permeability of oxygen-plasma-modified membrane increases, and the chlorine resistance of argon-plasma-modified membrane increases. The spectra of the attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the contact angle of the water were analyzed to explain the improvement of the two performances of the composite membrane. The carboxyl groups were introduced when modified by oxygen plasma, and cross-linking occurred when modified by argon plasma. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Several isomeric aromatic diester-diacids may appear as a result of the opening selectivity of anhydride groups towards the alcohol. H-1 n.m.r. was thus used to characterize the isomeric structure and to quantify the isomer composition. It was found that the isomer ratios quantitatively correlate with electron affinity of bridged dianhydrides and is independent of the alcohol structure used. Furthermore, the H-1 n.m.r chemical shift of bridged diester-diacids was found to be a very sensitive probe of chemical nature of bridged groups and can be used as indices of the opening selectivity. The gas transport properties of a series polyetherimides, which were prepared from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) with 1,3-phenylenediamine or 3,5-diaminobenzic acid (DBA) or its esters are reported. The effects of carboxylic group (-COOH) and carboxylic ether groups (-COOR), at five positions of 1,3-phenylenediamine moiety, on H-2, CO2, O-2, and N-2 permeability, diffusivity, and solubility of the polyetherimides were investigated. The gas permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients of the polyetherimides containing COOR are bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA, but the ideal separation factors and ideal diffusivity selectivity factors are much smaller than that of HQDPA-PDA because COOR decreases chain segmental packing efficiency and increases chain segmental mobility. The permeability coefficients of HQDPA-DBA to H-2, CO2, and O-2 are bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA; the ideal separation factors for gas pairs H-2/N-2, CO2/N-2, and O-2/N-2 are also much bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA. Both the diffusion coefficients of CO2 and O-2 and the ideal diffusivity selectivity factors for CO2/N-2 and O-2/N-2 are bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA because COOH decreases both chain segmental packing efficiency and chain segmental mobility. The copolyimides, which were prepared from 3,5-diaminobenzic acid and 3,5-diaminobenzic esters, have both high permeability and high permselectivity. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A new class of liquid crystalline poly(ester-imide)s was synthesized by melt polycondensation. The basic physical properties of the resulting polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (t.g.a.), and rheological and mechanical testing. All of these poly(ester-imide)s were amorphous, as reflected by the results obtained from the WAXD and d.s.c. studies. Characterization and comparison of these poly(ester-imide)s with the corresponding polyesters suggested that the introduction of imide groups into the polyester chain is favourable for the formation of liquid crystalline phases. These results, together with the rheological studies, suggested that there existed a form of strong inter- or intramolecular electron donor-acceptor interaction which played a significant role in the liquid crystalline properties of the poly(ester-imide)s. The polymer products thus obtained exhibited good mechanical properties, with flexural strengths and moduli as high as 174 MPa and 6.9 GPa, respectively. The morphology of the fracture surfaces of extruded rod samples showed a sheet-like structure which consisted of ribbons and fibres oriented along the flow direction. The glass transition temperatures and thermal stabilities of the polymers were improved by the incorporation of imide groups. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The effects of chlorine on three kinds of aromatic polyamides: those not containing a substituent, those containing substituents, and those containing heterocyclic aromatic rings, were studied. The correlations between the chemical structures of polyamides and the reactivity to hypochlorous acid were examined by IR and C-13 solid-state NMR spectra before and after chlorination. It was found that the chlorination of polyamides depends not only on their chemical structures but also on chlorination conditions such as pH value and reaction time. Their response to chlorination corresponds to four types: ring-chlorination, no reaction, N-chlorination, and chain cleavage. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Permeability coefficients of H-2, O-2, and N2 were measured under 10 atm at the temperature from ambient temperature up to 150 degrees C in a series of structurally different aromatic homo- and copolyimides, which were prepared from 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) or 4,4'-methylene dianiline (MDA) with various aromatic dianhydrides. The study shows that the molecular structure of the polyimides strongly influences gas permeability and permselectivity. As a result, the permeability coefficients of the polyimide membranes for each gas vary by over two orders of magnitude. In general, among the polyimide membranes studied, the increase in permeability of polymers is accompanied by the decrease in permselectivity, and the MDA-based polyimide membranes have higher permeability than ODA-based ones. Among the polyimides prepared from bridged dianhydrides, the permeability coefficients to H-2, O-2, and N-2 are progressively increased in the order BPDA < BTDA < ODPA similar to TDPA < DSDA ( SiDA < 6FDA, while H-2/N-2 and O-2/N-2 permselectivity coefficients are progressively decreased in the same order. The copolyimide membranes, which were prepared from 3,3',4,4' biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)dimethylsilane dianhydride (SiDA), and ODA, have favorable gas separation properties and are useful for H-2/N-2 separation applications.
