The aim of this work is to identify if there is sex specificity on C-12(6+) ion-induced oxidative damage in mouse lung at different time points. Kun-Ming mice were divided into two groups, each composed of six males and six females: control group and irradiation group with a single acute dose of 4 Gy. Animals were sacrificed at 2, 4 and 12 h respectively, there lungs were removed immediately, and the oxidative stress-related biomarkers were measured by Diagnostic Reagent Kits. The results showed that the relative activities of superoxide dismutase (4 h), catalase (2 h) and Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase (12 h) have significant changes (P < 0.05) between male groups and female groups, suggesting that the lungs of male mice are more sensitive to counteracting the oxidative challenge. Moreover, higher levels of malondiadehyde and lower contents of glutathione were also found in males, indicating that oxidative stress induced by C-12(6+) ion is pronounced in the lungs of males. We thought that these sex-responded differences may be attributed to the influence of sex hormones.

The transient state (as the defined point where no enantioseparation is obtained in a dual chiral selector system) of chiral recognition of aminoglutethimide in a binary mixture of neutral cyclodextrins (CDs) was studied by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The following three dual selector systems were used: alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(di-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (DM-beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(tri-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (TM-beta-CD). The S-(-) enantiomer of the analyte was more strongly retained in the presence of either alpha-CD or TM-beta-CD at pH 2.5, 100 mM phosphate buffer, while the R-(+) enantiomer was more strongly retained in the presence of either P-CD or DM-P-CD. In the more simple case, the elution order is invariably kept if the enantiomers have the same elution order in either one of the two hosts of the binary mixture. In contrast, the elution order may be switched by varying the concentration ratio of two hosts that produce opposite elution order for this particular analyte. In such a dual selector system, the enantioselectivity will disappear at the transient state at a certain ratio of host,:host, Moreover, the migration times of the two enantiomers with host, alone (diluted in buffer) is approximately equal to the migration times at the corresponding concentration of host, alone (diluted in buffer), where the ratio of concentrations of host,:host, is the same as in the binary mixture at the transient state. As found by nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, the analyte is forming a 1:1 complex with either one of the CDs applied. From this finding, a theoretical model based on the mobility difference of the two enantiomers was derived that was used to simulate the transient state. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. An improved free energy approach Lattice Boltzmann model(LBM) is proposed by introducing a forcing term instead of the pressure tensor. This model can reach the proper thermodynamic equilibrium after enough simulation time. On the basis of this model, the phase separation in binary polymer mixtures is studied by applying a Flory-Huggins-type free energy. The numerical results show good agreement with the analytic coexistence curve. This model can also be used to study the coarsening of microdomains in binary polymer mixtures at the early and intermediate stages.

We have studied the self-assembly of the ABA triblock copolymer (P4VP-b-PS-b-P4VP) in dilute solution by using binary block-selective solvents, that is, water and methanol. The triblock copolymer was first dissolved in dioxane to form a homogeneous solution. Subsequently, a given volume of selective solvent was added slowly to the solution to induce self-assembly of the copolymer. It was found that the copolymer (P4VP(43)-b-PS366-b-P4VP(43)) tended to form spherical aggregate or bilayer structure when we used methanol or water as the single selective solvent, respectively.

We employed a binary spacer of orderly conjugated 3,4-ethyldioxythiophene and thienothiophene to construct a wide-spectral response organic chromophore for dye-sensitized solar cells, exhibiting a high power conversion efficiency of 9.8% measured under irradiation of 100 mW cm(-2) air mass 1.5 global (AM1.5G) sunlight and an excellent stability.

A series of binary SB blend samples with various overall volume fraction of PS (Phi(PS)) and different discrete distribution of the block length (denoted as d(PS) or d(PB)) were prepared by mixing various asymmetric poly(styrene)-block-poly(butadiene) (SB) block copolymers with a symmetric SB block copolymer. The influences of the external solvent field, composition, and the block length distribution on the morphologies of the blends in the thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The experimental results revealed that after solvent annealing, the interface of the blend thin films depended mainly on the cooperative effects of the annealing solvent and the inherently interfacial curvature of the blends. Upon exposure to the saturated vapor of cyclohexane, which has preferential affinity for the PB block, a "threshold" of Phi(PS) (approximate 0.635-0.707) was found. Below such threshold, the influence of the annealing solvent played an important role on the interfacial curvature of the blend thin film.

A series of reactor blends of linear and branched polyethylenes have been prepared, in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane, using a combination of 2,6-bis[1(2,6-dimethyphenylimino) pyridyl]-cobalt(II) dichloride (1), known as an active catalyst for producing linear polyethylene, and [1,4-bis(2,6-diidopropylphenyl)] acenaphthene diimine nickel(II) dibromide (2), which is active for the production of branched polyethylene. The polymerizations were performed at various levels of catalyst feed ratio at 10 bar. The linear correlation between catalyst activity and concentration of catalyst 2 suggested that the catalysts performed independently from each other. The weight-average molecular weights ((M) over bar (w)), crystalline structures, and phase structures of the blends were investigated, using a combination of gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and small angle X-ray scattering techniques. It was found that the polymerization activities and MWs and crystallization rate of the polymers took decreasing tendency with the increase of the catalyst 2 ratios, while melting temperatures (T-m), crystalline temperatures (T,), and crystalline degrees took decreasing tendency. Long period was distinctly influenced by the amorphous component concentration.

Binary symmetric diblock copolymer blends, that is, low-molecular-weight poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) and high-molecular-weight poly(styrene-block-methacrylate) (PS-b-PMA), self-assemble on silicon substrates to form structures with highly ordered nanoholes in thin films. As a result of the chemically similar structure of the PMA and the PMMA block, the PMMA chain penetrates through the large PMA block that absorbs preferentially on the polar silicon substrate. This results in the formation of nanoholes in the PS continuous matrix.

An experimentally simple and inexpensive catalyst system based on hexabutylguanidinium/ZnBr, has been developed for the coupling of carbon dioxide and epoxides to form cyclic carbonates with significant catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions without using additional organic solvents (e.g. the turnover frequencies (TOF, h(-1)) values as high as 6.6 x 10(3) h(-1) for styrene oxide and 1.01 x 10(4) h(-1) for epichlorohydrin). This catalyst system also offers the advantages of recyclability and reusability. Therefore, it is a very effective, environmentally benign, and simple catalytic process. The special steric and electrophilic characteristics of hexabutylguanidinium bromide ionic liquid result in the prominent performance of this novel catalyst system.
