KCrF3 has been systematically investigated by using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital method within the generalized gradient approximation and the local spin density approximation plus the on-site Coulomb repulsion approach. The total energies for ferromagnetic and three different antiferromagnetic configurations are calculated in the high-temperature tetragonal and low-temperature monoclinic phases, respectively.

The electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties of CaCu3V4O12 are investigated by use of the density functional theory method. The calculated results indicate that CaCu3V4O12 is a half-metallic and ferrimagnetic compound. The magnetic coupling for Cu-V is antiferromagnetic, while those for Cu-Cu and V-V are ferromagnetic. The obtained elastic constants suggest that the compound is mechanically stable. The calculated oxidation states and density of states reveal the existence of a mixed valence for Cu and V. This supports the experimental observation of the mixed valence in Ca2+Cu2+Cu2+(V25+V24+)O-12.

The electronic and magnetic properties of tetragonal double perovskite Sr2NiOsO6 were studied by use of the density functional theory and including the spin-orbit coupling. Compensated half-metal is found if the spin-orbit coupling is not considered. Spin-orbit coupling induces orbital moments on both Ni and Os, making Sr2NiOsO6 a near compensated half-metal. Ferromagnetic phase is slightly favored over antiferromagnetic phase (by 4 meV). The small energy difference also suggests that both phases are competitive for the ground state. At ferromagnetic phase, the calculated net magnetic moment is 3.53 mu(B), in good agreement with experimental value of 3.44 mu(B). At antiferromagnetic phase, the net magnetic moment is 0.69 mu(B), in which the contribution from the net spin moment is 0.09 mu(B).

CaCu3Fe2Sb2O12 is mechanically stable, thermodynamically stable at pressures above 18 GPa. Both GGA and GGA + U methods predict that it is a ferrimagnetic semiconductor with Fe3+ in high spin state (S = 5/2). The coupling of Fe-Cu is antiferromagnetic, while that of Cu-Cu is ferromagnetic. The calculated total spin moment is 6.17 mu(B).

Reactions of Ln(III) acetate (Ln = Pr and Nd) and a polydentate Schiff-base in a mixture of methanol and acetonitrile resulted in the unprecedented assembly of novel Ln(10) aggregates containing two Ln(5) pentagons templated by mu(5)-CO32-, introduced via spontaneous fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Magnetic analysis using an expression including the ligand field effects and molecular field approximation indicates weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal ions. This synthetic approach may represent a promising new route toward the design of new lanthanide clusters and novel multifunctional materials.

Based on density functional theory, we systematically studied the electronic and magnetic properties of the real experimental structural phase BiCrO3 with the space group C2/c. It is found that the ground state is a moderately correlated Mott-Hubbard insulator with G-type antiferromagnetic structure, which is in agreement with the experimental observations. The magnetism can be qualitatively understood in terms of the superexchange mechanism via Cr1(t(2g))-O 2p-Cr-2(t(2g)). Moreover, the total energies calculated for various magnetic orderings lead to an estimate of the magnetic interaction constants.

The electronic and magnetic properties of CaCu3Cr4O12 and CaCu3Cr2Sb2O12 are investigated by the use of the full-potential linearized augumented plane wave (FPLAPW) method. The calculated results indicate that CaCu3- Cr4O12 is a ferrimagnetic and half-metallic compound, in good agreement with previous theoretical studies. CaCu3- Cr2Sb2O12 is a ferrimagnetic semiconductor with a small gap of 0.136 eV. In both compounds, because Cr4+ 3d (d(2)) and Cr3+ 3d (d(3)) orbitals are less than half filled, the coupling between Cr-Cu is antiferromagnetic, whereas that between Cu-Cu and Cr-Cr is ferromagnetic. The total net spin moment is 5.0 and 3.0 mu(B) for CaCu3Cr4O12 and CaCu3Cr2Sb2O12, respectively. In CaCu3Cr4O12, the 3d electrons of Cr4+ are delocalized, which strengthens the Cr-Cr ferromagnetic coupling. For CaCu3Cr2Sb2O12, the doping of nonmagnetic ion Sb5+ reduces the Cr-Cr ferromagnetic coupling, and the half-filled Cr3+ t(2g) (t(2g)(3)) makes the chromium 3d electrons localized. In addition, the ordering arrangement of the octahedral chromium and antimony ions also prevents the delocalization of electrons. Hence, CaCu3Cr2Sb2O12 shows insulating behavior, in agreement with the experimental observation.

First-principles calculations using the augmented plane wave plus local orbital method, as implemented in the WIEN2K code, have been used to investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the layered perovskite Cs2AgF4. Our calculations indicate that an orthorhombic ground state for Cs2AgF4 is energetically favored over tetragonal. We also find that Cs2AgF4 should be a strong two-dimensional ferromagnet, with very weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the layers, in agreement with the experiment. More importantly, an antiferrodistortive ordering of z(2)-x(2) and z(2)-y(2) orbitals is inferred from the density of states and from a spin density isosurface analysis.

The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Sn1-xFexO2 nanograins synthesized by simple hydrothermal method using SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O and FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O as raw materials are studied. No secondary phase was found in the XRD spectrum. The linear change of lattice volume for different Fe content strongly supports that the Fe3+ substitutes Sn4+ in SnO2 lattice. A Raman and IR spectra study indicated that the Fe incorporates into the SnO2 lattice. Both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic signals are detected in the Mossbauer spectra. The Sn1-xFexO2 (x <= 0.10) samples show room-temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) and the saturation magnetization increased with increasing Fe percent. Fe ions present three kinds of magnetic behaviors including paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and antiferromagnetic in the samples observed by investigation of the M-H and M-T curves. The weak RTFM was due to only a fraction of Fe ions contributing to magnetic-order coupling mediated by oxygen vacancy.

A new polyoxometalate [Co(phen)(3)](2)[HPMo4V Mo-4(VI) V-6(IV) M2O44]center dot 4H(2)O (M = 0.78Mo(V)+ 0.22V(IV)) 1 was hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectrum, ESR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound is in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 12.0953(7) angstrom, b = 14.0182(6) angstrom, c = 14.6468(7) angstrom, V=2402.55(18) angstrom(3), alpha = 105.134(2), beta = 91.841(3), gamma = 91.401(2), Z = 1, and R-1 (wR(2)) = 0.0617 (0.1701). The compound was prepared from tetra-capped pseudo-Kepin with phosphorus-centered polyoxoanions [PMo8V6M2O44](5-) , [Co(phen)(3)](2+) cations and linked through hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interaction into three-dimensional supramolecular framework. Astudy of the magnetic properties of 1 demonstrates that it exhibits antiferromagnetic coupling interactions.

Conducting polyamline with electrical conductivity of 2.34 x 10(-1) S cm(-1) was obtained using ferrocenesulfonic acid as dopant. After the ferrocenesulfonic acid was oxidized with FeCl3, though the electrical conductivity of the doped polyaniline decreased by 1-2 orders of magnitude, the magnetic susceptibility (chi) increased with the increase of the oxidation degree of ferrocenesulfonic acid. EPR spectra showed not only a signal with a g value of around 2, but also a so-called half-field signal with a g value of about 4 even at room temperature. Coexistence of ferromagnetic intrachain interactions and antiferromagnetic interchain interactions in the materials has been suggested.

The influence of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle on the magnetic and electronic properties of YBaMn2O5 was studied by density functional theory, which was implemented in the CASTEP code. In practical calculation, both G- and A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) orderings were considered. The calculated results indicated that G-type is more stable than A-type, in agreement with both experiment and previous theoretical study. It is also interesting to note that a transition from G-type to A-type at an Mn-O-Mn angle of ca. 170 degrees was found upon increasing Mn-O-Mn angle. Therefore, the calculation suggested that what is essential to stabilize the G-type AFM state is the reduction of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle. For both magnetic orderings, the compound changes from semiconductor to metal with the increase of Mn-O-Mn angle.

The electrical, magnetic and transport properties of Zn doped polycrystalline samples of Sr2Fe1-xZnxMoO6 ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.15 and 0.25) with the double perovskite structure have been investigated. The subtle replacement of Fe3+ ions by Zn2+ ions facilitates the formation of a more ordered structure, while further substitution leads to disordered structure because of the presence of a striped phase. Analysis of the x-ray powder diffraction patterns based on Rietveld analysis indicates that the replacement of Fe3+ by Zn2+ ions favours the formation of Mo6+ ions. The spin-glass behaviour can be explained on the basis of the competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange and the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction. The low-field magnetoresistance was moderately enhanced at x = 0.05, and its origin was found to be the competition between the decrease of the concentration of the itinerant electrons and the weaker antiferromagnetic superexchange in the antiphase boundaries. An almost linear negative magnetoresistance in moderate field has been observed for x = 0.25. A possible double-exchange mechanism is proposed for elucidating the observations; it also suggests a coexistence of (Fe3+, Mo5+) and (Zn2+, Mo6+) valence pairs.
