Three novel series of monomers, namely n-1-bromo-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenyloxy]-alkanes (Bn, n = 3, 6, 10), n-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo) phenyloxy]alkyloxy-4-methoxybenzene (Cn, n = 3, 6, 10) and n-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenyloxyl]alkyloxy-[4-methoxy-2,5-bis-(chloromethyl)] benzene (Dn, n = 3, 6, 10) were synthesized and characterized with FTIR, H-1 NMR, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. Their thermal behaviour was studied by different scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. The results show that B3, B6 and C6 exhibit monotropic nematic liquid crystalline behaviour.

A chromic molybdenum phosphate, (NH3CH2CH2NH3)(2).(NH3CH2CH2NH2)(3).[NaCr2Mo12O30(PO4)(HPO4)(3)]. 6H(2)O, involving molybdenum present in V oxidation, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and IR spectrum. Deep brown-red crystals are formed in the triclinic system, space group P (1) over bar, a = 12.067(2), b = 14.677(3), c = 21.290(2) Angstrom, alpha = 80.940(10)degrees, beta = 82.960(10)degrees, gamma = 76.61(2)degrees. The structure of the title compound may be considered to be two [Mo6O15(HPO4)(H2PO4)(3)](5-) units bonded to a chromic atom, although several P-O groups are not protonated on account of coordination with a Na+ cation. The one-dimensional tunnels were formed in the solid of the title compound. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Electrochemical polymerized polyaniline(PAn) film electrode was used to investigate the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the electrochemical redox reaction of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT), PAn film electrode was electrochemically treated or immersed in DMcT solution before it was scanned in 1.0 mol/L HCl electrolyte. The cyclic voltammograms of PAn film electrode in 1.0 mol/L HCl solution changed with the above treatment, implying the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the redox reaction of DMcT, The formation of electron-donor-acceptor adducts through the interaction between thiol or disulfide groups of DMcT and amine or imine groups of PAn during the treatment was probably the reason of the catalysis, The electrochemical properties of the adduct were different from those of PAn and DMcT, The adduct possessed a higher electrochemical activity and a better electrochemical reversibility than DMcT or PAn used alone.

Reaction of thiamine or thiamine monophosphate (TMP) with K2Pt(NO2)(4) afforded a metal complex, Pt(thiamine)(NO2)(3) (1), and two salt-type compounds, (H-thiamine)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (2) and (TMP)(2)[Pt(NO2)(4)]. 2H(2)O (3), which were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In 1, the square-planar Pt2+ ion is coordinated to the pyrimidine N(1'), a usual metal-binding site, and three NO2- groups. The thiamine molecule exists as a monovalent cation in 1 and a divalent cation in 2 while the TMP molecule is a monovalent cation in 3. In each compound, thiamine or TMP adopts the usual F conformation and forms two types of host-guest-like interactions with anions, which are of the bridging forms, C(2)-H . . . anion . . . pyrimidine-ring and N(4'1)-H(...)anion(...)thiazolium-ring. In 3, there is an additional anion-bridging interaction between the pyrimidine and thiazolium rings of TMP, being of the form C(6')-H . . . anion . . . thiazolium-ring. The salts 2 and 3 show similar hydrogen-bonded cyclic dimers of thiamine or TMP between which the anions are held. Results are compared with those of the other thiamine-platinum complexes. An organic-inorganic hybrid solid, (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Dark green crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pna21, a = 24.164(5), b = 18.281(4), c = 11.877(2) Angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V= 5247(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 4, lambda (MoK alpha) = 0.71073 Angstrom (R(F) = 0.0331 for 5353 reflections). Data were collected on a Siemens P4 four-circle diffractometer at 293 K in the range 1.69 degrees < theta < 25.04 degrees using the omega -scan technique. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by full-matrix least squares on F-2 using SHELXL-93. The structure of this compound consists of discrete (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26 clusters, constructed from beta -octamolybdate subunits ((Mo8O26)(4-)) covalently bonded to two (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2+) coordination complexes via bridging oxo groups that connect two adjacent molybdenum sites. Novel water insoluble sodium sulfonate-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone)s containing cyclohexylidene in the main chain with degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized from nucleophilic polycondensation of 5, 5'-carbonylbis (2-fluorobenzenesulfonate), 4, 4'-difluorobenzophenone and 4, 4'-cyclohexylidenebisphenol. The polymers showed excellent thermal stability and good water resistance as well. The DSC diagrams and WAXD patterns indicated an amorphous morphological structure of these polymers. A comprison of some properties between these copolymers and polymers derived from bisphenol A was given.

In this paper, we studied the reactions of both potassium ferricyanide and hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride at a 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in different pH solutions. The surface of the modified electrode has carboxyl groups, the dissociation of which are strongly dependent upon the solution pH values. The rate constant kb of the oxidation of ferrocyanide on the modified electrode can be obtained by fitting the experimental tip current-distance (I-T-d) curves with the theoretical values. The surface pK(a) of the 4-ABA modified GCE was estimated from the plot of standard rate constant k(o) versus the solution pH and is equal to 3.2, which is in good agreement with the reported result. The SECM approach curves for Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) both on the bare and the modified electrodes show similar diffusion control processes. These results can be explained by the electrostatic interactions between the modified electrode surface and the model compounds with different charges. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BN. Sodium sulfonate-functionalized polyether ether ketone)s derived from Bisphenol A with a degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic polycondensation of various amounts of 5,5-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1), 4,4'-diflurobenzophenone (2) and Bisphenol A (2). Copolymers showed excellent thermal stability and good mechanical properties. The selectivity of water vapor over nitrogen of membranes prepared from copolymers 3a and 3h was determined to be 3.43 x 10(6) and 1.05 x 10(7), respectively.

Crosslinkable side-chain liquid crystalline polyesters PCn from N-[n-(4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy)alkyl]diethanolamine (Cn, n = 3, 5, 6, 10) as mesogenic monomers and maleic anhydride were synthesized and characterized. The thermal properties of PCn's were studied by means of DSC, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and the results showed that all the polymers studied exhibit enantiotropic liquid crystallinity. In the molar mass independent region, the relatively high content of cis -CH=CH- groups in the polymer backbone of PC3 causes an increase of the melting temperature (T-m) and a decrease of T-g and isotropisation temperature (T-i). The crosslinking of PCn in the radical polymerization with styrene was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The absorption band at 1300 cm(-1) attributed to the in-plane C-H-bending vibration of trans -CH=CH- in the polymer backbone disappeared after crosslinking, indicating that the trans -CH=CH- functions are consumed in the crosslinking polymerization of styrene.

Some novel macrocyclic (arylene ether sulfone) containing cardo groups and (arylene ether ketone sulfone) oligomers have been synthesized in high yields by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 4,4'-difluorophenylsulfone with bisphenols in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate under a pseudo-high-dilution condition. Detailed structural characterization of these oligomers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (f.a.b.-m.s.), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (n.m.r.) and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis confirms their cyclic nature, and the composition of the oligomeric mixtures is provided by g.p.c. analysis. Ring polymerization of cyclic oligomers 3a to a high molecular weight polymer with M-w of 59.1 k was achieved by heating at 290 degrees C for 40 min in the presence of a nucleophilic initiator.
