The influence of lanthanum ions on the polymorphic phase of egg phosphatidylethanolamine and dielaidoylphosphatidylethanolamine (PE and DEPE) has been investigated by means of P-31-nuclear magnetic resonance (P-31-NMR) and high sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. P-31-NMR experiments show that lanthanum ions promote the formation of the hexagonal II phase at temperatures lower than those of the pure egg PE, DSC results also show that lanthanum ions induce the formation of hexagonal II phase in DEPE liposomes even al very low ion concentration, The effect of lanthanum ions on the polymorphism of PE liposomes is much greater than that of calcium.

Ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP) was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by means of a radical-initiated melt grafting reaction. FTIR and ESCA were used to characterize the formation of EP-g-GMA copolymers. The content of GMA in EP-g-GMA was determined by using hydrochloric acid/xylene titration. Effects of concentrations of GMA and dicumyl peroxide on grafting rate were studied. It was found that contact angles of the water on surfaces of EP-g-GMA samples increased with increasing content of GMA in EP-g-GMA. The influence of the content of GMA on the crystallization structure of EP-g-GMA was investigated by DSC and WAXD. Compared with the plain EP, the crystallization temperature of propylene blocks of EP-g-GMA increased over 10 K, and the melting temperature and crystallinity decreased somewhat. Functionalization of EP led to the change of the crystal form of propylene blocks from the mixed form of alpha and beta into the alpha form. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible LLDPE/PS blends has been studied by means of C-13 CP-MAS NMR and DSC techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/PS blends, and the compatibilizing effect of LLDPE-g-PS on LLDPE/PS blends depends on the PS grafting yield and molecular structure of the compatibilizers and also on the composition of the blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and PS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the noncrystalline region of the LLDPE and PS domain, respectively. Meanwhile, LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, resulting in an obvious change in the crystallization behavior of LLDPE. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Poly(aryl ether ketone ketone)s (PEKK) was a high-performance engineering plastics, By means of Wide Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) methods, PEKK samples crystallized in solvent induction, from glass state and from melting state were studied, Crystal forms I and II for PEKK were found, The formation of crystal form II was dependent on thermal history and solvent induction, and this form II had melting point 10 degrees C or so lower than that of form I crystallized from glass state, All PEKK samples had low melting peaks which were relevant to the polarization of PEKK molecular chain, while they had nothing to do with thermal history, The heat of fusion for PEKK low melting peaks accounted for, percentage of 2 to 10 or so of the whole heat of fusion, And PEKK has its equilibrium melting point of 409 degrees C.

A series of poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing meta-phenyl links are synthesized, DSC and wide-angle X-ray scattering, etc, are used to study the general properties of the polymers, With the increasing of meta linkage monomer percentage, the melting temperature decreases sharply at first, then rises steadily, the glass transition point. keeps a stable value, and crystallin;ty and crystallizing rate are reduced, A part of amorphous film of the polymer is annealed at different temperatures, DSC scan shows that besides T-m, a new melting peak (T-m') at low temperature appears, And with heat treating temperature rising, T-m' shifts to high temperature, and T-m keeps a stable value.

A series of copoly(ester imide)s is synthesized by thermal polycondensation of N,N'-hexane-1,6-diylbis(trimellitimide), p-hydroxybenzoic acid and diphenols with different structures. Their thermotropic liquid crystal properties are studied by DSC measurements and polarizing microscopy. II is found that the steric effect of nonlinear bisphenol modifiers is the most important factor in controlling the liquid crystallinity of the resulting copoly(ester imide)s.

The melting behavior of semicrystalline poly(ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). When PEEKK is annealed from the amorphous state, it usually shows two melting peaks. The upper melting peaks arise first, and the lower melting peaks are developed later. The upper melting peaks shown in the DSC thermogram are the combination (addition) of three parts: initial crystal formed before scanning; reorganization; and melting-recrystallization of lower melting peaks in the DSC scanning period. In the study of isothermal crystallization kinetics, the Avrami equation was used to analyze the primary process of the isothermal crystallization; the Avrami constant, n, is about 2 for PEEKK from the melt and 1.5 for PEEKK from the glass state. According to the Lauritzen-Hoffman equation, the kinetic parameter of PEEKK from the melt is 851.5 K; the crystallization kinetic parameter of PEEKK is higher than that of PEEK, and suggests the crystallizability of PEEKK is less than that of PEEK. The study of crystallization on PEEKK under nonisothermal conditions is also reported for cooling rates from 2.5 degrees C/min to 40 degrees C/min, and the nonisothermal condition was studied by Mandelkern analysis. The results show the nonisothermal crystallization is different from the isothermal crystallization. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

On the basis of DSC measurements, the Delta H-f(0) values of the fusion heat for PEEKK-PEBEKK copolymers with various biphenyl contents were obtained by using thermodynamics statistical theory proposed by Flory and graphical method of the specific volume-fusion heat. The results reveal that Delta H-f(0) values determined by these two methods for PEEKK-PEBEKK copolymers with various biphenyl content are nearly the same, and that Delta H-f(0) values are closely dependent on biphenyl content. Delta H-f(0) value is minimum at n(B)=0.35.

Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide) (PSAm)-titanium complexes (PSAm . Ti) were prepared and characterized. It is found that the coordination number of acrylamide (Am) to Ti in the complexes is strongly dependent on Am content in PSAm, but not on [Am]/[Ti] ratio in the feed. The infrared and x-ray photoelectron spectra suggest that the polymer-supported complexes possess the structure [GRAPHICS] The catalytic behavior of the complexes in styrene polymerization is described. The catalytic activity is markedly affected by [Al]/[Ti] ratio in the complexes. C-13 NMR, IR, and DSC data indicate that the polystyrene obtained with PSAm . Ti/MAO (MAO = methylaluminoxane) is highly syndiotactic. Use of Et(3)Al and i-Bu(3)Al in place of MAO gives atactic polystyrene. The activities of the various aluminum compounds used as the cocatalysts decrease in the order: MAO > Et(3)Al > i-Bu(3)Al. The polymer-supported complexes show relatively high activity even after the complexes had been exposed to air for 19 h or higher polymerization temperature. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The morphology of a novel poly(aryl ether ketone) [PEDEKmK] was investigated via polarizing optical microscopy (POM), TEM, DSC, SAXS and electron diffraction (ED). A distinct change in lamellar thickness, orientation, and spherulitic morphology was observed due to crystal melting and recrystallization. However, the crystal packing mode is found to be identical before and after the recrystallization process.

The effect of a fine powder of Y2O3, Nd2O3, and Ho2O3 on the crystal structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was studied with WAXD and DSC techniques. The results showed that the addition of the three rare earth oxides (REOs) can increase the crystallite size of the alpha-form crystal and the degree of crystallinity of iPP at an annealing temperature of 120 degrees C and that both Y2O3 and Nd2O3 are the beta-nucleator of iPP. REOs enhance the overall growth rate of the spherulites of iPP. All the iPP samples filled with REOs which were crystallized isothermally at 132 degrees C from the melt exhibited their melting peaks of the beta-form on the DSC heating traces, indicating that the REOs are the nucleating agents for both the alpha- and beta-forms of iPP under isothermal conditions. Melt mixing of nylon 8 with neodymium oxide particles was carried out with a single-screw extruder. The crystal behaviors of plain nylon 6 and the neodymium oxide filled nylon 6 mixture were studied by means of isothermal crystallization kinetic analysis. Isothermal crystallization thermograms obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were analyzed based on the Avrami equation. The neodymium oxide particles acted as a nucleating agent in the mixture. The overall rate of di-isothermal crystallization of the neodymium oxide filled nylon 6 mixture is higher than that of plain nylon 6. The mechanism and modes of plain nylon 6 were the same as those of neodymium oxide filled PA6 mixture.

Irradiated polyamide-1010 (PA1010) and PA1010 containing 0.5% (wt) heterogeneous nuclei were studied by ESR, WAXD, DSC and the determination of gel fractions. The fold surface of the lamellae plays an important role in the effects of radiation on crystalline PA1010. The results show that the direct radiation effects on both samples vary, while after being heated to 220 degrees C, the final radiation effects are identical, regardless of the difference in the amount of the fold surface of the lamellae. The post-radiation effects result predominantly from the fold surface.
