Rare-earth and lead ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Pb2+) doped Ca2Y8 (SiO4)(6)O-2 and Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2 thin films have been dip- coated on silicon and quartz glass substrates through the sol- gel route. X- Ray diffraction (XRD), TG- DTA, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), FT- IR and luminescence excitation and emission spectra as well as luminescence decays were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD reveal that these films remain amorphous below 700 degreesC, begin to crystallize at 800 degreesC and crystallize completely around 1000 degreesC with an oxyapatite structure. The grain structure of the film can be seen clearly from SEM and AFM micrographs, where particles with various shapes and average size of 250 nm can be resolved. Eu3+ and Tb3+ show their characteristic red (D-5(0)-F-7(2)) and green (D-5(4) - F-7(5)) emission in the films with a quenching concentration of 10 and 6 mol% (of Y3+), respectively. The lifetime and emission intensity of Eu3+ increase with the temperature treatment from 700 to 1100 degreesC, while those of Tb3+ show a maximum at 800 degreesC. Energy transfer phenomena have been observed by activating the oxyapatite film host- lattice Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2 with Tb3+ (Dy3+). In addition, Pb2+ can sensitize the Gd3+ sublattice in Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2.

Microporous silica gel has been prepared by the sol-gel method utilizing the hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The gel has been doped with the luminescent ternary europium complex Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen: where HTTA=1-(2-thenoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoracetone and phen=1,10-phenanthroline. By contrast to the weak f-f electron absorption bands of Eu3+, the complex organic ligand exhibits intense near ultraviolet absorption. Energy transfer from the ligand to Eu3+ enables the production of efficient, sharp visible luminescence from this material. Utilizing the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, the inorganic/polymer hybrid material containing Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen has also been obtained. SEM micrographs show uniformly dispersed particles in the nanometre range. The characteristic luminescence spectral features of europium ions are present in the emission spectra of the hybrid material doped with Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen.

The europium complex, Eu(TTA)(3)phen (TTA = thenoyltrifluoroacetone, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was successfully doped into organically modified silicate (ormosil) matrix-SiO2/(VTMOS+PMMA) (VTMOS = vinyltrimethoxysilane, PMMA = polymethylmethacrylate) via sol-gel process, and the luminescence properties of the resultant ormosil composite phosphors [ormosil: Eu(TTA)(3)phen were investigated compared with those of the pure Eu(TTA)(3)phen complex powder. The ormosil composite materials incorporated with Eu(TTA)(3)phen show the characteristic red emission of Eu3+ ion. The Eu3+ possesses fewer emission lines and longer lifetime in the hybrid phosphor than in the pure Eu(TTA)(3)phen complex. This has been explained from the viewpoint of the surrounding environment where the Eu3+ ion lies. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Rare earth complex Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 was introduced into a SiO2-PEG-400 hybrid material by a sol-ger method. The result indicated that Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) could associate with Eu3+ and change the surroundings of Eu3+ in the hybrid material, greatly improving the decay time. Transparent SiO2-PEG400 hybrid doped with a very small amount of Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 has better mechanical properties and can retain excellent luminescence properties of the rare earth complex. The nature of the emission centers and the valence change of Eu2+ in KCaF3:Eu2+ depends strongly on preparation conditions. Experimental results show that there are two different d-->f emission bands, located at 425 and 510 nm, respectively. Their origin, relationship, and the effect of doping concentration on them are discussed. A Eu2+-Eu3+ valence change process is proposed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The efficient synthesis of 5-(5-bromovaleramido)-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-(6-bromohexanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline, and 5-(11-bromoundecanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline are described, which reacted with cis-Ru(bpy)(2)Cl-2. 2H(2)O and sodium hexafluorophosphate to form Ru(bpy)(2)[phen-NHCO(CH2)(n)Br](PF6)(2) (n = 4, 5 or 10; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The intricate H-1 NMR spectra at low field of these complexes were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY technique. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study electrochemical behaviours of these complexes, and their luminescent properties were investigated with fluorescent spectra.

The variations of emission intensities of SrB4O7:Eu2+ and Sr2B5O9Cl:Eu2+ prepared in different atmospheres are discussed in view of the structure of host compounds. A model of substitution defects is proposed to explain the abnormal reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres of N-2, air and O-2. Experiment results show that SrB4O7:Eu2+ phosphor sample prepared in N-2 atmosphere has an emission intensity of 94% as high as that of the sample prepared in H-2 gas. This implies that the reduction of Eu2+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres could be potentially used in preparing phosphors, such as SrB4O7:Eu2+. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. The infrared spectra of BaLnB(9)O(16):Re, along with the VUV excitation spectra, have been measured. The spectra were tentatively interpreted in terms of the data on absorptions of the borate groups and band structure. It was observed that there are absorption due to BO3 and BO4 groups, indicating that there are BO3 and BO4 groups in BaLnB(9)O(16). It is found that absorption of the borate groups is located in the range from 120 to 170 mn. This result reveals that there is an energy transfer from host to the rare earth ions. It also observed that the energy of charge transfer band, the host absorption, the total crystal field splitting of d-levels of Tb3+ increase with the decrease in the Ln(3+) radius. Hybrid materials incorporating Eu-(TTA)(3). 2H(2)O (7hereafter designated as Eu-TTA, with TTA: thenoyltrifluoroacetone) in unmodified or modified MCM-41 by 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) were prepared by impregnation method. The obtained materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and luminescence spectra. All the hybrid samples exhibited the characteristic emission bands of EU3+ under UV light excitation at room temperature, and the excitation spectra showed significant blue-shifts compared to the pure rare-earth complex. Although the red emission intensity in the modified hybrid was almost the half of the red emission intensity in the pure Eu-TTA complex at room temperature, the hybrid showed a much higher thermal stability due to the shielding character of the MCM-41 host.

Binary and ternary europium complexes with dibenzplymethane (DBM) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) were synthesized and doped into a sol-gel luminescence thin film and polyvinylbutyral (PVB) film. The luminescent spectra and lifetime of the films were measured. The final results showed that Eu(III) characteristic emission bands were observed in the spectra of all the doped films. Longer lifetimes and a higher photo-stability were observed in SiO2:Eu(III) complex luminescent thin films than in PVB:Eu(III) complex films that contained a corresponding amount of pure complexes. Heat-stability tests showed that SiO2:Eu(III) complex thin films still showed certain fluorescence after heat-treatment at a temperature of 130 degreesC, while little fluorescence could be observed in PVB:Eu(III) complex films under a UV lamp. Two kinds of luminescent centers an observed in BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ phosphor. Influence of flux on luminescence of Eu2+ in the phosphor is discussed in detail. There exists Eu2+ (F-) center (a luminescent center with 277 nm excitation band and 386 nm emission band) due to the substitution of F- ions for O2- ions, Effective energy transfer from Eu2+ (F-) to Eu2+ (O2-) (a luminescent center with 334 nm excitation band and 450 nm emission band) is observed. The quenching concentration of Eu2+ in BaMgAl10O17 is raised by 0.20 mole per mole host due to forming of new luminescent center Eu2+ (F-). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Binary complexes of europium and terbium with N-propyl-4-carboxyphthalimide (NP) were prepared and characterized. The luminescence behaviors of the lanthanide complexes as well as their doped silica-based composites were investigated by fluorescence spectra. The results indicated that the lanthanide complexes showed fewer emission lines and slightly lower intensities in silica matrix than that of corresponding pure complexes. The lifetimes of the lanthanide complexes became longer when they were incorporated in silica matrix. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
