The thermal properties of ethylene-propylene copolymer grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (EP-g-GMA) were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared to the plain ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP), peak values of melting temperature (T-m) of the propylene sequences in the grafted EP changed a little, crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 8-12 degrees C, and melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) increased about 4-6 J/g. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of grafted and ungrafted samples was carried out by DSC. Within the scope of the researched crystallization temperature, the Avrami exponent (n) of ungrafted sample is 1.6-1.8, and those of grafted samples are all above 2. The crystallization rates of propylene sequence in EP-g-GMA were faster than that in the plain EP and increased with increasing of grafted monomer content. It might be attributed to the results of rapid nucleation rate. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The crystallization and melting behaviours of a multiblock copolymer comprising poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether sulfone) (PES) blocks whose number average molecular weights <((M)over bar (n)'s)> were 10 000 and 2900, respectively, were studied. The effect of thermal history on crystallization was investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurement. A differential scanning calorimeter was used to detect the thermal transitions and to monitor the energy evolved during the isothermal crystallization process from the melt. The results suggest that the crystallization of the copolymer becomes more difficult as compared with that of pure PEEK. The equilibrium melting point of the copolymer was found to be 357 degrees C, about 30 degrees C lower than that of pure PEEK. During the isothermal crystallization, relative crystallinity increased with crystallization time, following an Avrami equation with exponent n approximate to 2. The fold surface free energy for the copolymer crystallized from the melt was calculated to be 73 erg cm(-2), about 24 erg cm(-2) higher than that of pure PEEK. A new class of liquid crystalline poly(ester-imide)s was synthesized by melt polycondensation. The basic physical properties of the resulting polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (t.g.a.), and rheological and mechanical testing. All of these poly(ester-imide)s were amorphous, as reflected by the results obtained from the WAXD and d.s.c. studies. Characterization and comparison of these poly(ester-imide)s with the corresponding polyesters suggested that the introduction of imide groups into the polyester chain is favourable for the formation of liquid crystalline phases. These results, together with the rheological studies, suggested that there existed a form of strong inter- or intramolecular electron donor-acceptor interaction which played a significant role in the liquid crystalline properties of the poly(ester-imide)s. The polymer products thus obtained exhibited good mechanical properties, with flexural strengths and moduli as high as 174 MPa and 6.9 GPa, respectively. The morphology of the fracture surfaces of extruded rod samples showed a sheet-like structure which consisted of ribbons and fibres oriented along the flow direction. The glass transition temperatures and thermal stabilities of the polymers were improved by the incorporation of imide groups. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP) was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by means of a radical-initiated melt grafting reaction. FTIR and ESCA were used to characterize the formation of EP-g-GMA copolymers. The content of GMA in EP-g-GMA was determined by using hydrochloric acid/xylene titration. Effects of concentrations of GMA and dicumyl peroxide on grafting rate were studied. It was found that contact angles of the water on surfaces of EP-g-GMA samples increased with increasing content of GMA in EP-g-GMA. The influence of the content of GMA on the crystallization structure of EP-g-GMA was investigated by DSC and WAXD. Compared with the plain EP, the crystallization temperature of propylene blocks of EP-g-GMA increased over 10 K, and the melting temperature and crystallinity decreased somewhat. Functionalization of EP led to the change of the crystal form of propylene blocks from the mixed form of alpha and beta into the alpha form. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The microphase separation, glass transition and crystallization of two series of tetrahydrofuran-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers (PTHF-b-PMMA), one with a given PTHF block of M(n) = 5100 and the other with a given PTHF block of (M) over bar(n) = 7000, were studied in this present work. In the case of solution-cast materials, the microphase separation of the copolymer takes place first, with crystallization then gradually starting in the formed PTHF microphase. The T-g of the PMMA microphase shows a strong dependence on the molecular weight of the PMMA block, while the T-g of the PTHF microphase shows a strong dependence on the copolymer composition. The non-isothermal crystallization temperature (T-c) of the diblock copolymer decreases rapidly and continuously with the increase in the amorphous PMMA weight fraction; the lowest T-c of the copolymer is ca. 35 K lower than the T-c of the PTHF homopolymer. There also exists a T-c dependence on the molecular weight of the PTHF block. In addition, when the major component of the copolymer is PMMA, a strong dependence of the crystallizability of the copolymer on the molecular weight of the PTHF block is observed; the higher the molecular weight, then the stronger its crystallizability. The melting temperature of the block copolymer is dependent on the copolymer composition and the molecular weight of its crystallizable block. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Upper and lower critical solution temperature (UCST and LCST) behaviours have been examined for solution of PHB/PBHE blends in chloroform and chlorobenzene. Polymer-Solvent systems prepared with various solvents and concentrations were found to possess UCST and LCST characteristics. PHB/PBHE solution in chloroform displayed greater miscibility temperature region than that of the blend in chlorobenzene, but the relative tendency of both UCST and LCST were similar.

Phase behavior of blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) with four styrene-butadienestyrene (SBS) triblock copolymers, being of various molecular weights, architecture, and compositions, was investigated by small-angle light scattering. Small-angle X-ray scattering investigation was accomplished for one blend. Low critical solution temperature (LCST) and a unique phase behavior, resembling upper critical solution temperature (UCST), were observed. It was found that the architecture of the copolymer greatly influenced the phase behavior of the blends. Random phase approximation theory was used to calculate the spinodal phase transition curves of the ABA/C and BAB/C systems; LCST and resembling UCST phase behavior were observed as the parameters of the system changed. Qualitatively, the experimental and the theoretical results are consistent with each other. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Block copolymers of poly(ethersulphone) (PES) oligomers with liquid crystalline polyester units were synthesized by the reaction of dihydroxy-terminated poly(ether sulphone) oligomers (number-average molecular weights: 704, 1,158 and 2570) and terephthaloyl bis(4-oxybenzoyl chloride), and their properties were investigated. The results indicated that the copolymer with PES segments of molecular weight of 704 possessed birefringent features when annealed at 360 degrees C, while the copolymer with PES segments of molecular weight of 2,570 became isotropic. Also, the block copolymers had a better chemical resistance and high-temperature stability than PES.

Miscibility in blends of three styrene-butadiene-styrene and one styrene-isoprene-styrene triblock copolymers containing 28%, 30%, 48%, and 14% by weight of polystyrene, respectively, with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found from the optical clarity and the glass transition temperature behavior that the blends show miscibility for each kind of triblock copolymers below a certain concentration of PVME. The concentration range to show miscibility becomes wider as the polystyrene content and molecular weight of PS segment in the triblock copolymers increase. From the FTIR results, the relative peak intensity of the 1100 cm-1 region due to COCH3 band of PVME and peak position of 698 cm-1 region due to phenyl ring are sensitive to the miscibility of SBS(SIS)/PVME blends. The results show that the miscibility in SBS(SIS)/PVME blends is greatly affected by the composition of the copolymers and the polystyrene content in the triblock copolymers. Molecular weights of polystyrene segments have also affected the miscibility of the blends. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The aim of this work is to describe the most recent achievements in the field of the physical chemistry of mixing. The systems studied have been classified according to the amount of thermic effect due to the blending and its interpretation. When polystyrene (PS) and poly(alpha-methylstyrene) (P alpha MS) are blended, the interaction is weak and Delta(mix)H is close to zero. The presence of polar atoms and/or groups increases the stability of the blend and, therefore, Delta(mix)H becomes more negative. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(vinylacetate) (PVAc), when mixed to form binary systems, show large differences from their properties when pure. If hydrogen bonding takes place, the interactions are readily detected and a large effect is calorimetrically determined. Cellulose diacetate (CDA) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) have been studied as an example of a strongly interacting system.

The excimer fluorescence of a triblock copolymer, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) containing 48 wt% polystyrene was used to investigate its miscibility with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME). The excimer-to-monomer emission intensity ratio I(M)/I(E) can be used as a sensitive probe to determine the miscibility level in SBS/PVME blends: I(M)/I(E) is a function of PVME concentration, and reaches a maximum when the blend contains 60% PVME. The cloud point curve determined by light scattering shows a pseudo upper critical solution temperature diagram, which can be attributed to the effect of PB segments in SBS. The thermally induced phase separation of SBS/PVME blends can be observed by measuring I(M)/I(E), and the phase dissolution process was followed by measuring I(M)/I(E) at different times.

In order to study the oriented (epitaxial) crystallization of thermoplastic polymers on oriented polymer substrates, generally the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used. With this instrument, the crystallized material can easily be resolved and orientation relationships can be monitored by electron diffraction. Disadvantages are the time consuming sample preparations and difficulties in the in-situ observations of the crystallization events, because of the radiation sensitivity of the polymer crystals. It is demonstrated that these disadvantages of the TEM can be eleminated by the use of different methods of light optical contrasts under specific preparation conditions of the samples and that the optical microscopy being a supplementary method to the TEM for investigations of epitaxial crystallization.
