A white electroluminescent single polymer system with both high electroluminescence efficiency and excellent color rendering index (CRI) value is developed by covalently attaching blue, green, and red dopant units as individual light-emitting species to the side chain of polyfluorene as individual polymer host. A luminous efficiency of 8.6 cd A(-1), CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.36) and CRI value of 88 was demonstrated with their single-layer devices.

New single-polymer electroluminescent systems containing two individual emission species - polyfluorenes as a blue host and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole derivative units as an orange dopant on the main chain - have been designed and synthesized. The resulting single polymers are found to have highly efficient white electroluminescence with simultaneous blue(lambda(max) = 421 nm/445 nm) and orange emission (lambda(max) = 564 nm)from the corresponding emitting species. The influence of the photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies of both the blue and orange species on the electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies of white polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) based on the single-polymer systems has been investigated. The introduction of the highly efficient 4,7-bis(4-(N-phenyl-N-(4-methylphenyl)amino)phenyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole unit to the main chain of polyfluorene provides significant improvement in EL efficiency. For a single-layer device fabricated in air (indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonic acid/polymer/Ca/Al), pure-white electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.35,0.32), maximum brightness of 12 300 cd m(-2), luminance efficiency of 7.30 cd A(-1), and power efficiency of 3.34 lm W-1 can be obtained.

The dopant/host concept, which is an efficient approach to enhance the electroluminescence (EL) efficiency and stability for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) devices, has been applied to design efficient and stable blue light-emitting polymers. By covalently attaching 0.2 mol % highly fluorescent 4-dimethylamino-1,8-naphthalimide (DMAN) unit (photoluminescence quantum efficiency: Phi(PL)=0.84) to the pendant chain of polyfluorene, an efficient and colorfast blue light-emitting polymer with a dopant/host system and a molecular dispersion feature was developed. The single-layer device (indium tin oxide/PEDOT/polymer/Ca/Al) exhibited the maximum luminance efficiency of 6.85 cd/A and maximum power efficiency of 5.38 lm/W with the CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.19). Moreover, no undesired long-wavelength green emission was observed in the EL spectra when the device was thermal annealed in air at 180 degrees C for 1 h before cathode deposition. These significant improvements in both efficiency and color stability are due to the charge trapping and energy transfer from polyfluorene host to highly fluorescent DMAN dopant in the molecular level.

The dopant/host methodology, which enables efficient tuning of emission color and enhancement of the electroluminescence (EL) efficiency of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on small molecules, is applied to the design and synthesis of highly efficient green light emitting polymers. Highly efficient green light emitting polymers were obtained by covalently attaching just 0.3-1.0 mol% of a green dopant, 4-(N,N-diphenyl) amino-1,8-naphthaliniide (DPAN), to the pendant chain of polyfluorene (the host). The polymers emit green light and exhibit a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of Lip to 0.96 in solid films, which is attributed to the energy transfer from the polyfluorene host to the DPAN dopant unit. Single layer devices (device configuration: ITO/PEDOT/Polymer/Ca/Al) of the polymers exhibit a turn on voltage of 4.8 V, luminance efficiency of 7.43 cd A(-1), power efficiency of 2.96 lm W-1 and CIE coordinates at (0.26, 0.58). The good device performance can be attributed to the energy transfer and charge trapping from the polyfluorene host to the DPAN dopant unit as well as the molecular dispersion of the dopant in the host.

In this work, a novel substitutional solid solution (W0.8Al0.2)C was synthesized by mechanically activated high-temperature reaction. X-ray diffraction was used for phase identification during the whole reaction process. Environment scanning electronic microscopy-field emission gun and energy dispersive x-ray were used to investigate the microstructure and the quantitative material composition of the specimen. (W(0.8)A(10.2))C was found to crystallize in the WC-type, and the cell parameters were a = 2.907(1) angstrom and c = 2.837(1) angstrom. The hardness of (W0.8Al0.2)C was tested to be 19.3 +/- 1 GPa, and the density was 13.19 +/- 0.05 g cm(-3).

The first mononuclear tungsten-citrato complex, (NH4)(3)[Li(H2O)(3)WO3(C6H4O7)] (1) has been prepared by the reaction of ammonium tetrathio tungstate and lithium citrate in CH3OH - H2O solution at pH 8.2. There are two crystallographically independent anions in the asymmetric crystallographic unit. The crystal structure of the title compound (triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 6.901(1), b = 15.136(3), c = 16.107(3) Angstrom, alpha = 75.85(3), beta = 89.89(3), gamma = 89.97(3), V = 1631.4(6) Angstrom (3), R = 0.068, R-w = 0.1674 for 3878 reflections with I > 2 sigma (1)), reveals that in the compound a tungsten atom is coordinated to a fully deprotonated citrate as a tridentate ligand and three terminal oxygen atoms to form a distorted coordination octahedron.

Half-sandwich nitrosyl complexes Cp*M(NO)I-2 (M = Mo, or W) react with dithiocarbamates (NaS2CNMe2 and NaS2CNEt2) in THF to form of complexes: Cp*Mo(NO)I (S2CNMe2) (1), Cp*Mo(NO)I(S2CNEt2) (2), Cp*W(NO)I(S2CNMe2) (3) and Cp*W(NO)I(S2CNEt2) (4) in high yields. Treatments of Cp*M(NO)I-2 (M = Mo, W) or [CpMo(NO)I-2](2) with phosphinodithioate (NaS2PMe2) and phosphorodithioate [(NH4)S2P(OMe)(2)] result in complexes: Cp*Mo(NO)I(S2PMe2) (5a), CpMo(NO)I (S2PMe2) (5b), Cp*Mo(NO)(S2PMe2)(2) (6a), CpMo (NO) (S2PMe2)(2) (6b) and Cp*Mo(NO)I[S2P(OMe)(2)] (7), Cp*W(NO)I(S2PMe2) (8), Cp*W(NO) I[S2P(OMe)](2) (9). Treatment of (5a) and (5b) with an excess of NaS2PMe2 gives (6a) and (6b). The complexes have been characterized by their elemental analyses, i.r., H-1, C-13-n.m.r. and by EI-MS spectrometry.

The crystal structure of H3PMo6W6O40 3C2H6O was determined by X-ray crystallography and refined to R = 0.0698 based on 2279 observed reflections to give unit cell parameters a = 16.48(2)Angstrom, c = 25.205(5)Angstrom , gamma = 120 degrees, hexagonal, space group R (3) over bar. The organic solvent molecules were characterized also by IR, H NMR spectra. Weak interaction existed between the organic solvent and the heteropoly acid in the secondary structure. The novel compound showed different behaviours in solubility, oxidizability and photosensitivity in comparison with classical dodeca heteropolyacid of molybdenum and tungsten. A new method for electrochemically in situ conductivity measurements based on a reusable glassy carbon disc carbon fibre array double electrode is described. Using this technique and cyclic voltammetry, we have investigated the effects of the doping anion and solvent on the electrochemical properties of polypyrrole film. The electroactivity and potential dependent conductivity of polypyrrole film are strongly affected by solvent and the doping anion's solubility in the solvent, and also by the history of electrochemical treatments in different electrolyte solutions. It is very interesting that NO3-doped polypyrrole can completely keep its conducting state (doped state) at a reasonably negative potential (eg -0.8 V vs. sce) in acetonitrile solutions.

The variation of surface compositions on amorphous Ni80.4W1.5P18.1 alloy by O-2 oxidation and H-2 reduction treatments have been studied by XPS, UPS and ISS. It shows that addition of tungsten in the amorphous Ni-P alloy leads to dramatic changes of the relating component distributions in the surface layers before and after these treatments. Oxidation of a Ni80.4W1.5P18.1 amorphous alloy in 1 bar of oxygen at 513 K caused a significant segregation of nickel in different oxide states at the surface. The subsequent reduction of the oxidized surface with I bar hydrogen at 553 K resulted in only a small portion of Ni and P being reduced into elemental states, while most of them was found to combine to form a kind of nickel phosphate compound. On the other hand, under the same conditions, the oxidation and reduction of a Ni80P20 alloy gave rise to metallic Ni and elemental P as the predominate species on the alloy surface. The addition of W in the amorphous alloy might act as nuclei for a favorable formation of the phosphate structure which was proposed to be an active species for hydrogen-relating catalytic reactions. Michael addition of substituted pyrazoles 2 to 1-alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes (CO)(5)M=C(OEt)(CdropCPh) (1) (a, M = Cr and b M = W) afforded (pyrazolyl)alkenyl Fischer carbene complexes (CO)(5)M=C(OEt)(CH=C(R(1)R(2)R(3)pz)Ph) (R(1)R(2)R(3)pz = pyrazolyl) 3 (M = Cr) and 4 (M = W), respectively, with an exclusive (E)-configuration in mild to excellent yields. The reaction of la and 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (2b) was monitored to demonstrate the formation and decomposition of complex 3b by H-1 NMR measurements in CDCl3 at 23degreesC. Complexes 3 and 4 were characterized with H-1, C-13{H-1} NMR, IR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. When the substituted pyrazoles were 3-methylpyrazole (2a) and 3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazole (2d), molecular structures of the corresponding (pyrazolyl)alkenyl Fischer carbene complexes 3a and 4d were characterized by X-ray crystallographic study.
