Carbon isotopes of individual lipids in typical organisms from the Nansha sea area were measured by the GC-IRMS analytical technique. delta(13)C values of saturated fatty acids in different organisms examined are from -25.6parts per thousand to -29.7parts per thousand with the average values ranging from -26.4parts per thousand to -28.2parts per thousand and the variance range of 11.8parts per thousand, between different organisms is also observed. Unsaturated fatty acids have heavy carbon isotopic compositions and the mean differences of 2.9%.9-6.8parts per thousand compared to the same carbon number saturated fatty acids. delta(13)C values of n-alkanes range from -27.5%o to -29.7parts per thousand and their mean values, ranging from -28.6parts per thousand, to -28.9parts per thousand, are very close in different organisms. The mean difference in delta(13)C between the saturated fatty acids and n-alkanes is only 1.5parts per thousand, indicating that they have similar biosynthetic pathways. The carbon isotopic variations between the different carbon-number lipids are mostly within +/-2.0parts per thousand, reflecting that they experienced a biosynthetic process of the carbon chain elongation. At the same time, the carbon isotopic genetic relationships between the biological and sedimentary lipids are established by comparative studies of carbon isotopic compositions of individual lipids in organisms and sediments from the Nansha sea area, which provides scientific basis for carbon isotopic applied research of individual lipids.

In this paper, we viewed the diel vertical migration (DVM) of copepod in the context of the animal's immediate behaviors of everyday concerns and constructed an instantaneous behavioral criterion effective for DVM and non-DVM behaviors. This criterion employed the function of 'venturous revenue' (VR), which is the product of the food intake and probability of the survival, to evaluate the gains and losses of the behaviors that the copepod could trade-off. The optimal behaviors are to find the optimal habitats to maximize VR. Two types of VRs are formulated and tested by the theoretical analysis and simulations. The sensed VR, monitoring the real-time changes of trade-offs and thereby determining the optimum habitat, is validated to be the effective objective function for the optimization of the behavior; whereas, the realized VR, quantifying the actual profit obtained by an optimal copepod in the sensed-VR-determined habitat, defines the life history of a specific age cohort. The achievement of a robust copepod overwintering stock through integrating the dynamics of the constituent age cohorts subjected to the instantaneous behavioral criterion for DVM clearly exemplified a possible way bridging the immediate pursuit of an individual and the end success of the population. Auroral electrojet index (AE) are usually used to quantitatively describe the activity of the geomagnetic field in the polar region. AE is a means to identify the level of a substorm as well. The auroral electrojet indices (AU, AL, and AE) have served well for more than four decades as measures of magnetospheric substorm activity. However, as substorm studies have progressed considerably during the past several years, the accuracy of the present electrojet indices have become an important issue. Thus it is fortunate for us to reexamine and evaluate the accuracy of the present electrojet indices and improve them if necessary. For a better use of the present indices and for future improvement we examine the limitations of the auroral electrojet indices as an accurate quantitative measure of the auroral electrojets and magnetospheric substorms. Some of the limitations arise from the data availability and also from the present simplified scheme in deriving them, but some of them originate in the definition themselves. In the present paper, we analyze the characteristics of aurora, ionospheric current system and the AE index. It is noted that for the pseudo-breakup events the variations of AE ( > 500 nT) clearly show the sudden increase and slow decrease phases. However, aurora does not expand to poleward or equatorward, and the ionospheric currents presents the features of the magnetic convection. We mainly focus on investigating what time the AE could be used to identify the subtorm.
