ECL of several amines containing different numbers of hydroxyl and amino groups was investigated. N-butyldiethanolamine is found to be more effective than 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol at gold and platinum electrodes, and is the most effective coreactant reported until now. Surprisingly, ECL intensities of monoamines, such as 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol and N-butyldiethanolamine, are much stronger than that of diamines including N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-(2-hydroxypropyl)ethlenediamine. The striking contrast between ECL signals of the investigated monoamines and diamines may result from more significant side reactions of diamines, such as the intramolecular side reactions between oxidative amine cation radicals and reductive amine free radicals.

Bisphenol monomer 4-carboxylphenyl hydroquinone (4C-PH) containing carboxyl groups was synthesized by diazotization reaction of p-aminobenzoic acid and 1,4-benzoquinone and subsequent reductive reaction. Copolymerization of bisphenol A, 4C-PH, sodium 5,5'-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzene-sulfonate) and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone at various molar ratios through aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction resulted in a new sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) containing pendant carboxyl groups (C-SPEEK). The structures of the monomer 4C-PH and copolymers were confirmed by FT-IR and H-1 NMR. Flexible and transparent membranes with sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups as the proton conducting sites were prepared. The dependence of ion-exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability on the degree of sulfonation has been studied.

The reaction mechanism of Pd(O)-catalyzed allene bis-selenation reactions is investigated by using density functional methods. The overall reaction mechanism has been examined. It is found that with the bulkier PMe3 ligand, the rate-determining step is the reductive elimination process, while allene insertion and reductive elimination processes are competitive for the rate-determining step with the PH3 ligand, indicating the importance of the ligand effect. For both cis and trans palladium complexes, allene insertion into the Pd-Se bond of the trans palladium complex using the internal carbon atom attached to the selenyl group is prefer-red among the four pathways of allene insertion processes. The formation of sigma-allyl and pi-allyl palladium complexes is favored over that of the sigma-vinyl palladium species. By using methylallene, the regioselectivity of monosubstituted allene insertion into the Pd-Se bond is analyzed.

A green synthetic strategy to prepare monodisperse Pt nanoparticles was reported. Aminodextran acted as the reductive and protective agents, and Pt nanoparticles were characterized by UV/vis spectroscopy (UV-vis), Pt nanoparticles were conveniently obtained at one step. transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). By changing the initial molar ratio of arninodextran to platinum precursor, Pt nanoparticles with different size were obtained. Amino groups of aminodextran could absorb on Pt nanoparticles surfaces and serve as a very good stabilizer. However, dextran without amino groups could not effectively stabilize Pt nanoparticles and aggregation of Pt nanoparticles were obtained. Catalytic activity of these Pt nanoparticles for the electron-transfer reaction between hexacyanoferrate (III) ions and thiosulfate ions was also studied, and they showed good catalytic efficiency.

Well-dispersed palladium nanoparticles in mesoporous SBA- 15 SiO2 were prepared in a facile one-step approach during sol-gel route under reductive atmosphere. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that as-synthesized nanocomposites basically remain ordered two-dimensional hexagonal mesostructure while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study exhibits a well dispersion of palladium nanoparticles within the mesoporous SBA-15 channels. The size of Pd nanoparticles is approximately in the range of 5-10nm. However, the resulting nanocomposites exhibit a highly catalytic activity and reused ability at least after five recycles without ligand in air for both the Suzuki and Heck coupling reactions.

A general procedure to determine the absolute configuration of cyclic secondary amines with Mosher's NMR method is demonstrated, with assignment of absolute configuration of isoanabasine as an example. Each Mosher amide can adopt two stable conformations (named rotamers) caused by hindered rotation around amide C-N bond. Via a three-step structural analysis of four rotamers, the absolute configuration of (-)-isoanabasine is deduced to be (R) on the basis of Newman projections, which makes it easy to understand and clarify the application of Mosher's method to cyclic secondary amines. Furthermore, it was observed that there was an unexpected ratio of rotamers of Mosher amide derived from (R)-isoanabasine and (R)-Mosher acid. This phenomenon implied that it is necessary to distinguish the predominant rotamer from the minor one prior to determining the absolute configuration while using this technique.

Surface replacement reaction of thiol-derivatized, single-stranded oligonucleotide (HS-ssDNA) by mercaptohexanol (MCH) is investigated in order to reduce surface density of the HS-ssDNA adsorbed to Au(111) surface. Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) are employed to assess the composition and state of these mixed monolayers. It is found that each CV of mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) only shows a single reductive desorption peak, which suggests that the resulted, mixed SAMs do not form discernable phase-separated domains. The peak potential gradually shifts to negative direction and the peak area increases step by step over the whole replacement process. By analyzing these peak areas, it is concluded that two MCH molecules will replace one HS-ssDNA molecule and relative coverage can also be estimated as a function of exposing time. The possible mechanism of the replacement reaction is also proposed. The DNA surface density exponentially reduces with the exposing time increasing, in other words, the replacement reaction is very fast in the first several hours and then gradually slows down. Moreover, the morphological change in the process is also followed by STM.

A method was developed for the determination of micro mercury in the soil, plants and the traditional Chinese medicine using flow injection quartz tube-atomic absorption spectrometry. The effect of the factors such as acidity,. the carrier solution, the flow rate of reductive solution and argon gas, etc. on the determination was studied. When vanadic oxide, nitric acid and sulfuric acid were used to decompose the sample reliable result could be obtained. The characteristic mass of the method is 59 pg, the detection limit is 0.028 mug/L, RSD is < 3.9% and the recovery is in the range of 94% &SIM; 102%.

Reactions of Rh and Ir hydrido complexes. [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(solv)(EtOH)]ClO4 (solv = Me2CO, 1a; EtOH, 1b) and [Ir(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(Me2CO)(2)]BF4 (2), with various N,N'-donor bridging ligands, such as pyrazine (pyz), 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (tmdp) and di(4-pyridyl) disulfide (dpds), in some solvents were examined, and their reaction products were characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis. IR, H-1 NMR and UV-vis spectra. Rh hydrido complexes, la or 1b, formed a dinuclear Rh complex, [Rh-2(PPh3)(2) {(eta(6)-C6H5PPh2}(2)] (ClO4)(2).6CH(2)Cl(2) (3.6CH(2)Cl(2)), in dichloromethane with a reductive elimination of hydrogen. The reactions of 1a or 1b with the pyz ligand in dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran gave triangular Rh-3 complexes, [Rh-3(PPh3)(6)(pyz)(3)](ClO4)(3).CH2Cl2 (5.CH2Cl2) and [Rh-3(PPh3)(6)(pyz)(3)](ClO4)(3).EtOH (5.EtOH), respectively, in contrast to the formation of a dinuclear Rh hydrido complex, [Rh-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(Me2CO)(2)(pyz)](ClO4)(2).EtOH A-EtOH). in acetone. The reactions of la or 1b with the tmdp ligand in dichloromethane and 3-methyl-2-butanone also afforded dinuclear Rh complexes, [Rh-2(PPh3)(4)(tmdp)(2)](ClO4)(2) (6) and [Rh-2(PPh3)(4)(tmdp)(2)](ClO4)(2).4MeCOCHMe(2) (6.4MeCOCHMe(2)), respectively. On the other hand, Ir hydrido complex 2 reacted with pyz and dpds ligands in dichloromethane to afford dinuclear Ir complexes, [Ir-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(Me2CO)(2)(pyz)]- (BF4)(2).3CH(2)Cl(2) (7.3CH(2)Cl(2)) and [Ir-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(dpds)(2)](BF4)(2).3CH(2)Cl(2).H2O (8.3CH(2)Cl(2).H2O), respectively, without any reductive elimination of hydrogen. Based on structural studies in solution and in the solid state. it was demonstrated that various Rh and Ir complexes were selectively produced depending on the choice of solvents and N,N'-donor bridging ligands.

Ion - molecule reactions of disubstituted benzene with ion system of acetone and deuterium - labelled acetone under chemical ionization conditions were examined and the fragmentation reactions of the adduct ions formed by the ion - molecule reactions were studied using collision - induced dissociation (CID) technique. It was found that the electron - releasing groups favored the adduct reactions, whereas the electron - withdrawing groups did not. The position and properties of substituted groups affected the relative abundance of the adduct ions. The fragmentation reaction of the adduct ion formed by ortho - phenylenediamine with acetyl ion was similar to the reductive alkylation reaction of amine in condensed phase.

The ion-molecule reactions of disubstituted benzenes under chemical ionization conditions with acetyl chloride as reagent gas were examined, and the fragmentation reactions of the adduct ions (mostly proton and acetyl ion adducts) were studied by collision-induced dissociation. Electron-releasing substituents favored the adduct reactions, and electron-withdrawing groups did not. The position and properties of substituting groups had an effect on the relative abundances of the adduct ions. Several examples of the ortho effect were observed. The fragmentation reaction of the adduct ions formed by ortho-benzenediamine with the acetyl ion was similar to the reductive alkylation reaction of amines in the condensed phase. All structural geometries of intermediates, transition states and product are, optimized at HF/ LANL2DZ level under the effective core potential approximation. The potential energy profile for some elementary reactions of hydroformylation catalyzed by Co-2(CO)(6)(PH3)(2), consisting of carbonyl insertion, H-2 oxidative addition and aldehyde reductive elimination, are calculated, The transition states are further confirmed by having one and only one imaginary vibrational frequency, The activation energies of carbonyl insertion, H-2 oxidative addition and aldehyde reductive elimination are 54, 02, 134, 02 and 43. 44 kJ/mol, respectively.

A method for the specific determination of cobalt based on reversed-phase liquid chromatography with amperometric detection via on-column complex formation has been developed. A water-soluble chelating agent, 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid (PAN-6S), is added to the mobile phase and aqueous cobalt solutions are injected directly into the column to form in situ the cobalt-PAN-6S chelate, which is then separated from other metal PAN-6S chelates and subjected to reductive amperometric detection at a moderate potential of -0.3 V. Because the procedure eliminates the interference of oxygen and depresses the electrochemical reduction of the mobile phase-containing ligand PAN-6S, by virtue of the quasi:reversible electrode process of the cobalt-PAN-6S complex, a low detection limit of 0.06 ng can be readily obtained. Interference effects were examined for sixteen common metal species, and at a 5- to 8000-fold excess by mass no obvious interference was observed. The feasibility of the method as an approach to the specific analysis of cobalt in a hair sample has been demonstrated.

The electrochemical behavior of myoglobin at a Brilliant Cresyl Blue (BCB) modified platinum gauze electrode and spiral pt wire in the BCB solution in optically transparent thin layer cell base been investigated by using cyclic potential-absorbance method and double potential step chronoabsorptometry. Samples of two cores, Cores M5-5 and M7-4 in the Bohai Sea were analyzed in isotopes, grain size, heavy minerals, chemical compositions, and 14 C dating to reconstruct the sedimentation during the Holocene. Abrupt change in carbon and oxygen stable isotopes was recognized at Core M5-5 at about 6400 a BP, which was likely due to the intrusion of the Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) extension into the Bohai Sea. At Core M7-4, sediments between 5900 and 6600 a BP (150-260 cm depth) became coarse-grained, containing rich garnet, high manganese content, and nil autogenic pyrite, indicating a very dynamic sedimentary event during which the ambience was transformed from reductive to oxidative, and sedimentation boosted. Meanwhile, the YSWC had invaded into the Bohai Sea indicated by rich planktonic foraminifera in this event. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
