Nb2O5 sculptured thin. films deposited by electron beam evaporation with glancing angle deposition were prepared. Nb2O5 sculptured thin. films with tilted columns are optical anisotropy. XRD, SEM, UV-vis-NIR spectra are employed to characterize the microstructure and optical properties. The maximum of birefringence (Delta n) is up to 0.045 at alpha = 70 degrees with packing density of 0.487. With increasing the deposition angle, refractive index and packing density of Nb2O5 STF are decreasing. The relationship among deposition parameter, microstructure and optical properties was investigated in detail. (C) 2008 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The well known 'crystal seed' theory is first applied in this work to prepare TiO2 film: a high refractive index rutile TiO2 film is grown by electron beam evaporation on the rutile seed formed by 1100 degrees C annealing. The average n is larger than 2.4, by far the highest in all the authors' TiO2 films. The films are characterised by optical properties, microstructure and surface morphologies. It is found that the refractive index shows positive relation with the crystal structure, grain size, and packing density and roughness of the film. The film has lower density of granularity and nodule defects on the surface than those of the film deposited by magnetron sputtering. The result shows attractive application in complex filter and laser coatings.

Mode characteristics for equilateral triangles, squares, and hexagonal resonators with a center hole are numerically simulated by the finite-different time domain (FDTD) technique. The center hole does not break the symmetry behavior of the original resonators and can result in modification of the mode field patterns and mode Q factors. In an equilateral triangle resonator the center hole can suppress the symmetry state of degenerate states with the merit of single mode operation. In a square resonator, the Q factor can be enhanced for some modes with a suitable size of the hole. For a hexagonal resonator with a side length of 1 mu m and a refractive index of 3.2, the mode Q factors first gradually decrease with the increase of the hole diameter for modes at a wavelength of about 1500 nm, then the modes transform to that of a microdisk with a jump of the mode wavelength as the hole diameter approaches 0.7 mu m. Finally, the mode Q factors greatly enhance as the hole diameter reaches about 1 mu m. The results indicate that the center hole can greatly modify mode characteristics, especially that of the mode Q factor. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

The influence of imperfect boundaries on the mode quality factor is investigated for equilateral-triangle-resonator (ETR) semiconductor microlasers by the finite difference time domain technique and the Pade approximation with Baker's algorithm. For 2-D ETR with a refractive index of 3.2 and side length of 5 mum, the confined modes can still have a quality factor of about 1000 as small triangles with side length of 1 mum are cut from the vertices of the ETR. For a deformed 5 mum ETR with round vertices and curve sides, the simulated mode quality factors are comparable to the measured results.

By vertical sedimentation and oblique titration, silica microspheres were grown in different shapes of concave microzones that were etched on a (100) p-silicon substrate. Through scanning electron microscope observation and optical reflective spectra measurement, sedimentation of microspheres in those microzones was compared. An index was introduced to judge the efficiency of sedimentation. The comparison demonstrates that regular hexagons and triangles facilitate the growth of photonic crystals the most. By vertical sedimentation, silica micro-spheres were grown in different shapes of concave micro-zones which were etched on a (100) p-silicon substrate. The following were found: this method can effectively raise the quality of films by avoiding cracks; the geometry of the micro-zones affects the sediment of the film; regular hexagons and triangles best facilitate the growth of photonic crystals. This method is practical for its ability to fabricate self-assembly photonic crystals in previously designed small areas.

Using Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Y alloys as raw materials and nitrogen as gas reactants, AIN powders and composite AIN powders by in-situ synthesis method were prepared. AIN lumps prepared by the nitriding of Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Y alloys have porous microstructure, which is favorable for pulverization. They have high purity, containing 1.23 % (mass fraction) oxygen impurity, and consisted of AIN single phase . The average particle size of AIN powders is 6.78 mum. Composite AlN powders consist of AlN phases and rare, earth oxide Y2O3 phase. The distribution of particle size of AIN powders shows two peaks. In view, of packing factor, AIN powders with such size distribution can easily be sintered to high density.

In order to understand the relationship between phospholipid molecular structures and their olfactory responses to odorants, we designed and synthesized four phosphatidylcholine analogues with different long hydrocarbon (CH) chains and selected three natural phospholipids with different head-groups. By using interdigital electrodes (IEs) as olfactory sensors (OSs), we measured the responses of the Ifs coated with these seven different lipid membranes to four alcohol vapors in a gas flow system. The Ifs voltage changes were recorded and the voltage-relative saturate vapor pressure (V-P/P degrees) curves were also plotted. It was found that with a methyl (-CH3) placed at the C-8 position in the 18-carbon chain, the olfactory responses could be improved about ten times and with conjugated double bonds (C=C) in the long chains, the sensitivity could be increased by 3 similar to 4 orders of magnitude. As to head-groups, choline is preferred over ethanolamine and serine in phospholipid structures in terms of high olfactory sensitivity: These results are expected to be useful in further designing and manufacturing lipid-mimicking OSs. To avoid the limitation of the widely used prediction methods of soil organic carbon partition coefficients (K-OC) from hydrophobic parameters, e.g., the n-octanol/water partition coefficients (K-OW) and the reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) retention factors, the soil column liquid chromatographic (SCLC) method was developed for K-OC prediction. The real soils were used as the packing materials of RP-HPLC columns, and the correlations between the retention factors of organic compounds on soil columns (k(soil)) and K-OC measured by batch equilibrium method were studied. Good correlations were achieved between k(soil) and K-OC for three types of soils with different properties. All the square of the correlation coefficients (R-2) of the linear regression between log k(soi) and log K-OC were higher than 0.89 with standard deviations of less than 0.21. In addition, the prediction of K-OC from K-OW and the RP-HPLC retention factors on cyanopropyl (CN) stationary phase (k(CN)) was comparatively evaluated for the three types of soils. The results show that the prediction of K-OC from k(CN) and K-OW is only applicable to some specific types of soils. The results obtained in the present study proved that the SCLC method is appropriate for the K-OC prediction for different types of soils, however the applicability of using hydrophobic parameters to predict K-OC largely depends on the properties of soil concerned. This review article summarizes the variety of polar stationary phases that have been employed for capillary electrochromatographic separations. Compared with reversed-phase stationary phases, the polar alternatives provide a completely different retention selectivity towards polar and charged analytes. Different types of polar stationary phases are reviewed, including the possible retention mechanisms. Electrochromato-graphic separations of polar solutes, peptides, and basic pharmaceuticals on polar stationary phases are presented.

The dynamic flow profiles and column efficiencies in conically shaped semi-preparative liquid chromatographic columns (inlet ID larger than outlet ID) with two different conical angles (7degrees and 15degrees) were studied. The dynamic flow profiles were studied by an on-column visualization method. Conical columns were compared with cylindrical column of the same length and internal volume. The results showed that the flow profile of a sample band in the conical column of 7degrees (50 mm x 17 mm --> 11 mm ID) was parabolic in shape. The sample band migrated slower in the wall region than in the central region, as in the cylindrical column (50 mm x 14 mm ID). However, the sample band in the conical column of 15degrees (50 mm x 20 mm --> 7 mm ID) migrated slower in the central region than in the wall region, resulting in a reverse parabolic flow profile, in contrast to that in cylindrical column. This indicated that a flat flow profile might be realized in a conical column with a conical angle between 7degrees and 15degrees. The conical column of 15degrees had the highest column efficiency among the three columns under the same conditions. Compared with the cylindrical column packed with identical packing material, the conical column of 15degrees had 22%-45% higher column efficiency and 11%-27% higher peak height.

The unique properties of capillary electrochromatography such as high performance, high selectivity, minimum consumption of both reagents and samples, and good compatibility with mass spectrometry make this technique an attractive one for the analysis of biomolecules including peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleosides and nucleoticles. Irreversible adsorption between the biomolecules and the charged packing surface leads to a lack of reproducibility and serious peak tailing, so various approaches have been taken to overcome this and to improve the technique for future challenges.

Affinity capillary electrochromatography (CEC) with zonal elution method was used to probe the competitive interactions of enantiomers with protein. In this approach, a known concentration of a competing agent is continuously applied to a CEC column with bovine serum albumin (BSA) physically adsorbed on SAX packing while injections of a small amount of analyte are made. The binding sites of solutes on the BSA molecule were determined by the changes in the retention factors of the solutes resulted from the addition of competitive agent. By using D- or L-tryptophan as competitive agents and D-, L-tryptophan and benzoin enantiomers as injected analytes showed that BSA molecule has a primary site to strongly bind L-tryptophan, but D-tryptophan dose not bind at this site; D- and L-tryptophan share a weak binding site on the BSA molecule. Benzoin enantiomers do not share any binding sites with either D- or L-tryptophan. Non-chiral compounds of trichloroacetic acid and n-hexanoic acid were applied as the competitive agents to study the binding of warfarin enantiomers to BSA, it was observed that trichloroacetic acid and n-hexanoic acid had a same binding site for warfarin enantiomers binding to BSA molecule. A simple preparation process of alkylamide phase for reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC) is described. The process includes aminopropyltrimethoxysilane firstly reacted with octanoyl chloride, then the intermediate was coupled onto porous silica. The resultant bonded silica has a reproducible ligand surface concentration and homogenous bonded ligand distribution on the porous silica. Characterization of prepared packing was carried out with elemental analysis, solid-state C-13 NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). Chromatographic evaluations were carried out by using a mixture of organic compounds including acidic, basic and neutral analytes under methanol/water as binary mobile phase. The results showed that the stationary phase have excellent chromatographic properties and can be efficiently used for the separation of basic compounds.
