The triggering of wave-breaking in a three-dimensional laser plasma wake (bubble) is investigated. The Coulomb potential from a nanowire is used to disturb the wake field to initialize the wave-breaking. The electron acceleration becomes more stable and the laser power needed for self-trapping is lowered. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations were performed. Electrons with a charge of about 100 pC can be accelerated stably to energy about 170 MeV with a laser energy of 460 mJ. The first step towards tailoring the electron beam properties such as the energy, energy spread, and charge is discussed. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

A set of recursive formulas for diffractive optical plates design is described. The pure-phase plates simulated by this method homogeneously concentrate more than 96% of the incident laser energy in the desired focal-plane region. The intensity focal-plane profile fits a lath-order super-Gaussian function and has a nearly perfect flat top. Its fit to the required profile measured in the mean square error is 3.576 x 10(-3).

A new formulation derived from thermal characters of inclusions and host films for estimating laser induced damage threshold has been deduced. This formulation is applicable for dielectric films when they are irradiated by laser beam with pulse width longer than tens picoseconds. This formulation can interpret the relationship between pulse-width and damage threshold energy density of laser pulse obtained experimentally. Using this formulation, we can analyze which kind of inclusion is the most harmful inclusion. Combining it with fractal distribution of inclusions, we have obtained an equation which describes relationship between number density of inclusions and damage probability. Using this equation, according to damage probability and corresponding laser energy density, we can evaluate the number density and distribution in size dimension of the most harmful inclusions. A photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS) would work in a nonlinear mode under high biased electrical field. The experimental results of nonlinear critical state have shown that both the biased voltage and the laser energy may have working thresholds to turn on the nonlinear modes. The relation between the biased voltage (aid the laser energy is inverse ratio, i.e., higher biased field need lower laser energy for nonlinear mode, and vise versa. At the nonlinear critical point, the output of PCSS is unstable, as both the linear and nonlinear pulse may occur. As the laser energy and biased field increase, the PCSS would work in the nonlinear mode steadily. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low-energy laser-heating techniques are widely used in engineering applications such as, thinfilm deposition, surface treatment, metal forming and micro-structural pattern formation. In this paper, under the conditions of ignoring the thermo-mechanical coupling, a numerical simulation on the spatialand temporal temperature distribution in a sheet metal produced by the laser beam scanning in virtue of thefinite element method is presented. Both the three-dimensional transient temperature field and thetemperature evolution as a function of heat penetrating depth in the metal sheet are calculated. Thetemperature dependence of material properties was taken into account. It was shown that, after taking thetemperature dependence of the material absorbance effect into consideration, the temperature change ratealong the scanning direction and the temperature maximum were both increased.

Using time-of-flight spectrometry, the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with argon clusters has been studied by measuring the energy and yield of emitted ions. With two different supersonic nozzles, the dependence of average ion energy (E) over bar on cluster size (n) over bar in a large range of (n) over bar approximate to 3 x 10(3) similar to 3 x 10(6) has been measured. The experimental results indicate that when the cluster size (n) over bar <= 3 x 10(5), the average ion energy (E) over bar proportional to (n) over bar (0.5), Coulomb explosion is the dominant expansion mechanism. Beyond this size, the average ion energy gets saturated gradually, the clusters exhibit a mixed Coulomb-hydrodynamic expansion behavior. We also find that with the increasing gas backing pressure, there is a maximum ion yield, the ion yield decreases as the gas backing pressure is further increased.

High-energy ion emission from intense-ultrashort (30fs) laser-pulse- cooled deuterium-cluster (80K) interaction is measured. The deuterium ions have an average energy 20keV, which greatly exceeds Zweiback's expectation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 (2000) 2634]. These fast deuterium ions can be used to drive fusion and have a broad prospect.

Far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob is of great significance to wireless laser communication. In this letter, we propose two schemes to obtain far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob. One scheme is based on the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Using SA algorithm, we design the phase profile of the diffractive phase element (DPE). Using the designed DPE, far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob is achieved. The other scheme is based on YG algorithm. By means of YG algorithm, we appropriately designed the DPE in the emitting plane. Using the DPE, far-field spot compression without energy loss in main lob is obtained. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
