The effects of the molecular weight of polystyrene (PS) component on the phase separation of PS/poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS/P4VP) blend films on homogeneous alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and heterogeneous SAM/Au substrates have been investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). For the PS (22.4k)/P4VP (60k) system, owing to the molecular weight of PS component is relatively small, the well-aligned PS and P4VP stripes with good thermal stability are directed by the patterned SAM/Au surfaces. With the increase of the molecular weight of PS component (for the PS (582k)/P4VP (60k) system), the diffusion of P4VP is hindered by the high viscosity of PS during the fast spin-coating process. The phase separation behavior of PS/P4VP on the SAM/Au patterned substrates is similar to that on the homoueneous SAM and cannot be easily directed by the patterned SAM surfaces even though the characteristic length of the lateral domain morphology is commensurate with the stripe width.

With the aid of thermodynamics of Gibbs, the expression of the spinodal was derived for the polydisperse polymer-solvent system in the framework of Sanchez-Lacombe Lattice Fluid Theory (SLLFT). For convenience, we considered that a model polydisperse polymer contains three sub-components. According to our calculation, the spinodal depends on both weight-average ((M) over bar (w)) and number-average ((M) over bar (n)) molecular weights of the polydisperse polymer, but the z-average molecular weight ((M) over bar (z)) dependence on the spinodal is invisible. The dependence of free volume on composition, temperature, molecular weight, and its distribution results in the effect of (M) over bar (n) on the spinodal. Moreover, it has been found that the effect of changing (M) over bar (w) on the spinodal is much bigger than that of changing (M) over bar (n) and the extrema of the spinodal increases with the rise of the weight-average molecular weight of the polymer in the solutions with upper critical solution temperature (UCST). However, the effect of polydispersity on the spinodal can be neglected for the polymer with a considerably high weight-average molecular weight. A more simple expression of the spinodal for the polydisperse polymer solution in the framework of SLLFT was also derived under the assumption of upsilon(*)=upsilon(1)(*)=upsilon(2)(*) and (1/r(1)(0))-(1/r(2i)(0))-->(1/r(1)(0)).

The purity and molecular weight of calmodulin have been determined by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, and the results have been discussed. The experimental results demonstrate that this method is high sensitive and rapid as compared with other traditional methods.

This work presents the structure and impact properties of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) blended with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (PES-C/UHMWPE) at different compositions. The addition of UHMWPE can considerably improve the Charpy and Izod impact strength of the blends. The fracture surface is examined to demonstrate the toughening mechanics related to the modified PES-C resin. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The glass transition temperature (T(g)) of cyclic polystyrene was measured by differential scanning calorimetry. There was a marked difference in the glass transition behaviour between cyclic and linear polystyrene. In the low molecular weight region (M(n) < 5 x 10(3)), the T(g) of the cyclic polystyrene increased with decreasing M(n), contrary to that of linear polystyrene. With M(n) higher than 5 x 10(3), the T(g) of cyclic polystyrene increased with increasing M(n). The T(g) of cyclic and linear polystyrene approached the same constant value when the M(n) was high enough (M(n) > 10(5)). Combining the results of specific volume, it is believed that the variation of T(g) with molecular weight does not depend only on free volume effects but that configurational entropy is also an important factor.

Polysaccharides extracted from Ulva pertusa Kjellm ( Chlorophyta) are a group of sulfated heteropolysaccharides, the ulvans. In this study, different molecular weight ulvans were prepared by H2O2 degradation and their antioxidant activities investigated including superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, reducing power and metal chelating ability. The molecular weights of natural and degraded ulvans were 151.7, 64.5, 58.0, and 28.2 kDa, respectively, as determined by high performance gel permeation chromatography. Among the four samples, U-3 ( the lowest molecular weight sample) showed significant inhibitory effects on superoxide and hydroxyl radicals with IC50 values of 22.1 mu g mL(-1) and 2.8 mg mL(-1); its reducing power and metal chelating ability were also the strongest among the four samples. All the other samples also demonstrated strong activity against superoxide radicals. The results indicated that molecular weight had a significant effect on the antioxidant activity of ulvan with low molecular weight ulvan having stronger antioxidant activity.
An improved method for the extraction of low molecular weight organic acids in variable charge soils

Due to specific adsorption to variable charge soils, low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) have not been sufficiently extracted, even if common extractants, such as water and 0.1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH), were employed. In this work, the method for extracting LMWOAs in soils with 0.1 M NaOH was improved for variable charge soils; e.g. 1.0 M potassium fluoride (KF) with pH 4.0 was applied as an extractant jointed with 0.1 M NaOH based on its stronger ability to change the electrochemical properties of variable charge soils by specific adsorption. With the proposed method, the recoveries of oxalic, tartaric, malic, citric and fumaric acids were increased from 83 4, 93 1, 22 2, 63 +/- 5 and 84 +/- 3% to 98 +/- 2, 100 +/- 2, 85 +/- 2, 90 +/- 2 and 89 +/- 2%, respectively, compared with NaOH alone. Simultaneously, the LMWOAs in Agri-Udic Ferrosol with field moisture were measured with a satisfactory result.

RP-HPLC analysis for low molecular weight organic acids in soil solution has been optimized. An Atlantis (TM) C-18 column was used for the analyses. An optimal determination for eleven organic acids in soil solution was found at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 220 nm detection wavelength, with a mobile phase of 10 mM KH2PO4 -CH3OH (955, pH 2.7), a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min and 10 mu L sample size. The detection limits ranged 3.2-619 ng/mL, the coefficients of variation ranged 1.3-4.6%, and the recoveries ranged 95.6-106.3% for soil solution with standard addition on the optimal conditions proposed.

Total and subcellular hepatic Zn, Cu, Se, Mn, V, Hg, Cd, and Ag were determined in a mother-fetus pair of Dall's porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli). Except for higher fetal Cu concentration, all maternal elements were higher. Elements existed mostly in the cytosol of both animals except in the case of maternal Ag in the microsome and fetal Cu and Ag in the nuclei and mitochondria. In the maternal cytosol, Zn, Mn, Hg, and Ag were present in the high-molecular-weight substances (HMW); Se and V were present in the low-molecular-weight substances (LMW); Cu and Cd were mostly sequestered by metallothionein (MT). In the fetal cytosol, Zn, Se, Mn, Hg, Cd, and Ag were present in the HMW and V in the LMW, while Cu and Ag were mostly associated with MT. MT isoforms were characterized using the HPLC/ICP-MS. Two and four obvious peaks appeared in the maternal and fetal MT fractions, respectively. The highest elemental ion intensities were at a retention time of 7.8 min for the mother, and for the fetus the peak elemental ion intensities occurred at a retention time of 4.3 min, suggesting that different MT isoforms may be involved in elemental accumulation in maternal and fetal hepatocytosols. Molecular weight dependence of phase separation behavior of the Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)/Poly(ethylene oxide-block-dimethylsiloxane) (P(EO-b-DMS)) blends was investigated by both experimental and theoretical methods. The cloud point curves of PEO/P(EO-b-DMS) blends were obtained by turbidity method. Based on Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory (SLLFT), the adjustable parameter, epsilon*(12)/k (quantifying the interaction energy between different components), was evaluated by fitting the experimental data in phase diagrams. To calculate the spinodals, binodals, and the volume changes of mixing for these blends, three modified combining rules of the scaling parameters for the block copolymer were introduced.

Well-defined polyacrylonitrile with a higher number-average molecular weight (R.) up to 200,000 and a lower polydispersity index (PDI, 1.7-2.0) was firstly obtained via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process. This was achieved by selecting a stable, easy way to prepare disulfide compound intermediates including bis(thiobenzoyl) disulfide (BTBDS) and bis(thiophenylacetoyl) disulfide (BTPADS) to react with azobis(isobutyronitrile) to directly synthesize RAFT agents in situ.
